5 out of 5 stars A true Horticulturists guide.......2000-02-08

This is a 5 volume masterpiece which is definitely the quintessential guide for the very keen gardener and the horticultural professional and would also be an extremely good companion for the student in this industry. W. J. Bean takes us through many genera from A to Z and also includes some principals in the very first volume. A real gem. The books are fairly pricey which is not surprising due to the immense amount of work which went in to producing all the volumes. A true classic.

          Book Description

Welcomed worldwide on its first publication, this practical and lively guide for the amateur genealogist has now been fully revised and updated. The new material includes a section on medieval genealogy which targets the increasing numbers of family historians who have reached back as far as the sixteenth century and wish to go further. Heraldry is introduced for the first time. There is detail on the location and genealogical content of military records and the records of Poor Law Unions and their workhouses. Details are also included of the latest changes to the location and cost of civil registration sources. A problem-solving manual rather than a simple how-to guide, The family tree detective explains what to do when the usual methods fail and provides invaluable assistance for those without access to London’s vast resources of genealogical information.

            Book Description

As our lives become more urbanized, many of us have lost the ability to name these beautiful flowers, whether in cities or countryside, in gardens or conservation areas. This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Anecdotes on historical background, medicinal or herbal uses, and common folklore breathe life into the text. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

                  Product Description

When seen silhouetted against a winter sky on a river bank, the black poplar easily earns a place among Britain’s largest, most charismatic trees. It is also one of the rarest, and its future is causing great concern amongst conservationists.

This is the first book to tell the story of the black poplar in Britain: its historic place in the landscape, its cultural role in poetry and folklore, its uses as timber and in medicine, and the reasons for its decline. Fiona Cooper explores how an understanding of the black poplar’s genetic make-up can help promote its conservation. She examines in particular the famous populations in the Vale of Aylesbury and in urban Manchester, the latter of which is under great threat.

                    Product Description

In the former cradle of the Mayan empire, Belize is one of the world's top ecotourism destinations. Topside, tropical rainforests are populated by exotic birds, monkeys and wild cats, while offshore lie the world's second-largest barrier reef and three of the Western Hemisphere's four coral atolls. Shallow reefs ring the more than 450 cayes and islets, while towering walls plunge into the sea. More than 400 fish species and a host of corals and invertebrates shelter in the warm Caribbean waters. This book explores 66 of the best dive sites off Belize, with full-color photos throughout.

                    3 out of 5 stars Misleading names.......2007-02-19

It is a good overview book, but when we got to Belize realized that a lot of the sites that are listed are not called by the same name at all - so hard to determine what sites we had really dived compared to the book. Also it covers a lot of area in Belize (if you are going to Ambergris Caye then maybe 1/2 or 2/3 of the book is useful).

2 out of 5 stars Not so informative..........2007-01-29

This is a fair book, but loads of sites are missing (from this edition at least) and much of the information I expected to find was not in it - particularly the prices and quality of the various diving shops. It is a mere overview of what you find under the sea, with little on how to actually get to that point.

3 out of 5 stars Better than nothing........2007-01-24

While I agree with the previous 2 reviewers. I did find the book helpful as a brief and very general overview of what was available and what there was to see in those dive areas. It put the areas in geographical perspective for me and was a nice addition to the dive briefing. After the dive, the fish ID part was a nice memory jogger for doing my logbook entries.

However, it does not help with planning a dive or a dive trip. You can get more info on that free from websites, magazines and dive tour specialists.

Overall better than nothing if you're into filling out your logbook.

                    1 out of 5 stars Pointless.......2003-04-03

This book has no discernible value to anyone planning a dive trip to Belize. First, it does not tell you which dive sites are good and which are worth skipping. This makes it difficult to plan your trip, assuming you have limited time and money to spend. The book does not even contain a list of top 5 or 10 recommended sites in the country.

Second, the book has no information on costs or other logistical aspects of a dive trip. For example, it mentions that Dangriga is the departure point for diving certain reefs, but doesn't tell you that there are no dive shops in Dangriga: to do any diving around there, you have to go thru an out-of-town resort, which is highly inconvenient.

Third, the capsule descriptions of 66 specific dive sites -- the heart of the book -- don't tell you anything meaningful and are irrelevant anyway because dive shops, not customers, choose which sites are visited. (Customers can choose which area they want to go to, but the dive shops select the specific sites within that area.)

Finally, although the book was updated in June 2002, it ignores the fact that in October 2001, Hurricane Iris devastated the sourthern diving hub of Placencia. The reefs in this area are heavily damaged and therefore not worth visiting. The failure to update the book to account for this major development can only be explained by bad faith on the part of Lonely Planet, which should be ashamed to have put such a lousy product on the market.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2003-01-05

This book is not worth buying. It provides very little information on specific dive sites. I did not use the book once to make a dive choice during two weeks in Southern Belize. A good dive book for Belize is really needed - it was difficult to locate good dive operators for some areas...but this book was of no value.

It does have some nice pictures and a very basic fish/coral guide in the back.

Diving and Snorkeling in Belize is for divers - as a pictured cookbook is for hungry people... A very good source for divers, novice through advanced. The Book starts by covering some basics for every tourist to Belize, then moves on to an overview of Belize as a scuba-diver's wonder-world. Following, all sites are described explicitly. The site descriptions include easy-to-follow rankings of expertise required and characteristics, as depth, currents, visibility, etc., and directions to unique attractions in each site. Throughout, beautiful pictures enhance this coverage. The book definitely played a part in the decision to visit Belize, and for divers - is a recommended addition to the Lonely Planet reference to this region.

The Aquaquest guides are the best-written dive guides I've seen, and the Belize guide by Ned Middleton is no exception. It's well written, well-organized, and beautifully illustrated with photographs. It also includes a chapter on places to stay and eat that I found to be more useful than some stand alone travel guides. Middleton clearly knows his dive sites, and his descriptions and recommendations proved to be reliable.

Both experienced divers and beginners will delight in this colorful guide to the underwater paradise of Honduras and Belize, one of the few books to offer in-depth coverage of this remarkable corner of the Caribbean Sea. With over 400 nautical miles of sea and 800 miles of coastline, the neighboring countries of Honduras and Belize are linked by the second largest coral reef in the world. The reef has reached an extraordinary level of development, and the thousands of cays supply divers with sensational encounters and lively sea floors. This guide, complete with practical information, spectacular images, and full color three-dimensional maps, supplies divers with all they need to make the most of their trip.

Whether a diver likes exploring sunken shipwrecks or colorful thick coral masses, swimming with dolphins or sharks, or admiring unusual fish and plants, this guidebook has tours for all tastes, and covers 32 of the most exciting dive sites. Easy-to-follow maps and descriptions of each site guide the diver in discovering its treasures, while information on what to see at certain times of the day or night helps with the overall planning of tours. Beautifully illustrated cognitive species cards of 106 fish and plants round out this thoroughly engaging guidebook.

This book had too little information about what I needed. I'm taking a trip to Roatan, Honduras this year and wanted to get some information to prepare me. There was only 9 pages about the place I was going to, so I returned it.

                        Book Description

Only Two Hours by plane from the United States. Belize is the perfect destination for travelers who want to interact with unbridled nature in the tropics. Here are vast tracts of rainforest and mangrove swamps, the greatest reef system in the Western Hemisphere, more than 170 low-lying islands (or cayes), dazzling white sand beaches, and the "Blue Hole"-made famous by Jacques Cousteau. Here, too, is a dazzling array of wildlife-tapirs, ocelots, jaguarundis, margays, monkeys, crocodiles, and manatees, as well as the only jaguar and howler monkey preserves in the world.

Belize has set aside nearly one-third of its land mass as nature reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries, and this comprehensive guidebook provides all the information travelers will need for enjoying its rich natural heritage as well as its many historical attractions. Features include:
-- A thorough guide to travel, lodging, and food: resorts, retreats, hotels, guest houses, campsites, restaurants, rental cars, and bus services
-- Comprehensive information on outdoor recreational opportunities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, birdwatching, sea kayaking, river rafting, horseback riding, camping, and hiking
-- Reviews of dive charter operators, boat and yacht charters, dozens of islands, and scores of underwater dive and snorkel sites
-- Descriptions of every readily accessible national park, with local site information, descriptions of flora and fauna, recreational opportunities, access, and accommodations
-- Historical background and directions for visiting every major Mayan site, including Tikal, nearby in Guatemala
-- Tips on language, visa requirements, currency, climate, health concerns, and much more

"A wonderful book ... packed with practical information for the scuba diver, adventurer, and nature lover."

                        4 out of 5 stars A Different Guide Book.......2001-06-24

This was a different kind of guide book in a good way. It gave a nice history of the area and gave information to not only the usual tourist places but "off the beaten track" activities that we actually did in Belize.....and had a great time. Would give this one to any friend going to the area.
