5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2002-12-27

This book is an excellent, easy to read and easy to carry resource for those interested in art, art history, and Chinese philosophy. It's particularly handy for anyone who wants to better understand Daoism, in general, and how it applies to Chinese painting, in particular.

4 out of 5 stars great pictures.......2001-02-04

This book has great pictures in it and if you ever need Chinese names look in this book! I do not paint but I write and I was writing a story set in China and I found many great names but as I was looking for names I was attracted to the pictures and started to look more at them than the names for my characters.

                  Book Description

Controversy swirled around the Black Panthers from the moment the revolutionary black nationalist Party was founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. Since that time, the group that J. Edgar Hoover called “the single greatest threat to the nation’s internal security” has been celebrated and denigrated, deified and vilified. Rarely, though, has it received the sort of nuanced analysis offered in this rich interdisciplinary collection. Historians, along with scholars in the fields of political science, English, sociology, and criminal justice, examine the Panthers and their present-day legacy with regard to revolutionary violence, radical ideology, urban politics, popular culture, and the media. The essays consider the Panthers as distinctly American revolutionaries, as the products of specific local conditions, and as parts of other movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

One contributor evaluates the legal basis of the Panthers’ revolutionary struggle, explaining how they utilized and critiqued the language of the Constitution. Others explore the roles of individuals, looking at a one-time Panther imprisoned for a murder he did not commit and an FBI agent who monitored the activities of the Panthers’ Oakland branch. Contributors assess the Panthers’ relations with Students for a Democratic Society, the Young Lords, the Brown Berets, and the Peace and Freedom Party. They discuss the Party’s use of revolutionary aesthetics, and they show how the Panthers manipulated and were manipulated by the media. Illuminating some of the complexities involved in placing the Panthers in historical context, this collection demonstrates that the scholarly search for the Black Panthers has only just begun.

                    Book Description

Peter G. Wallace interweaves the Reformation into the transformations of political institutions, socioeconomic structures, gender relations, and cultural values in early modern Europe. In approaching the European Reformation as a long-term process, Wallace argues that the classic sixteenth-century religious struggles with the resolutions proposed by reformers such as Luther, were not fully realized for most Christians until the early eighteenth century.

                      Book Description

This on-the-spot narrative of the February 1997 loss of three U.S. Coast Guardsmen from the Quillayute River Station during a maritime rescue is both a commemoration and a report of the failure of the Coast Guard's senior leadership to appreciate and support the work of enlisted men and women at often remote and dangerous small-boat stations.

The first in-depth look at a small-boat maritime rescue by the U.S. Coast Guard, this book is also the first to describe the role of those at small-boat rescue stations and of the policy setters at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C. Its author was in the right place at the right time on a night when everything went wrong. From the first alarm to the dramatic helicopter rescue of the crew of a foundering sailboat, from the onshore rescue of the sole survivor of the first dispatched Coast Guard crew to the tragic losses, this man-against-the-sea tale is told largely in the words of the participants and others who were with author Dennis Noble at the station near La Push, Washington, on the night the tragedy unfolded.

Noble also provides an analysis of the state of the Coast Guard, how its current problems have developed, and what effect they have on the service's operations. As the story unfolds, the views of senior enlisted personnel at the station paint a picture of an overworked small-boat rescue force and their feelings toward what they perceive as a distant, and in many cases unaware, officer corps. Noble contrasts these perspectives with those voiced by the investigating commissioned officers and higher-ups at Coast Guard headquarters.

Illustrated with 29 photos and maps, Noble's contribution to the annals of maritime history is a riveting account of extraordinary heroism in the face of regrettable human tragedy.

                          Book Description

Modern applications are both data and computationally intensive and require the storage and manipulation of voluminous traditional (alphanumeric) and nontraditional data sets (images, text, geometric objects, time-series). Examples of such emerging application domains are: Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Multimedia Information Systems, CAD/CAM, Time-Series Analysis, Medical Information Sstems, On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP), and Data Mining. These applications pose diverse requirements with respect to the information and the operations that need to be supported. From the database perspective, new techniques and tools therefore need to be developed towards increased processing efficiency.

This monograph explores the way spatial database management systems aim at supporting queries that involve the space characteristics of the underlying data, and discusses query processing techniques for nearest neighbor queries. It provides both basic concepts and state-of-the-art results in spatial databases and parallel processing research, and studies numerous applications of nearest neighbor queries.

Science and the Search for Meaning: Perspectives from International Scientists should find a home on the shelf of any college-level collection strong in both science and religion. It offers a technical gathering of papers on discussions between science and religion stemming from meetings of the minds in Europe, represents the first English translation of a recent French edition, and gathers articles by fifteen recognized leaders in the science-religion field - four Nobel Prize winners - to provide an excellent gathering of cross-cultural opinion.

                          Book Description

The World Wide Web is rapidly filling with more text than anyone could have imagined a short time ago. However, the task of determining which data is relevant has become appreciably harder. In this original new work Richard Belew brings a cognitive science perspective to the study of information as a computer science discipline. He introduces the idea of Finding Out About (FOA), the process of actively seeking out information relevant to a topic of interest. Belew describes all facets of FOA, ranging from creating a good characterization of what the user seeks to evaluating the successful performance of search engines. His volume clearly shows how to build many of the tools that are useful for searching collections of text and other media. While computer scientists make up the book's primary audience, Belew skillfully presents technical details in a manner that makes important themes accessible to readers more comfortable with words than equations. (A CD is included with the text.)

                          5 out of 5 stars A refreshing alternative perspective..........2003-11-10

I wonder if I was reading the same book as a couple of the reviewers!

IMHO there are (too) many books in this field that deal with how search engines work, but the more 'slippery' concepts associated with how people actually use them to find about information have received much less attention.

The book provides a very welcome cognitive science perspective on a discipline often dominated by those who seek overly simple mechanistic formulas and 'answers' to very tricky 'questions'.

1 out of 5 stars Did the author just discover word processing?.......2003-09-04

This book, aside from being horribly written, full of awful grammar and confused writing, everything being derivative, etc. (see the next review), suffers from over-stylization. The author seems to have just discovered the bold, italic and underline buttons of his word processor and does not hesitate to use them, along with quotation marks, all caps and margin notes, almost interchangeably. This makes the book very hard to read because your eyes are going from one... styled word or phrase to another.

Please, don't buy this book or use it for your course.

1 out of 5 stars Composition of blocks from works of other authors.......2003-02-22

Bunch of blocks and citations from other authors with absolutely no explanations. It doesnt look like author understands anything that he borrowed from others to compose this book or dare to give one calculation example or derive a formula. Horrible, horrible book for a novice.

5 out of 5 stars This is the search engine Bible........2001-04-04

Though I have not Taken Dr. Belew's class, I know he is a consumate professional in his field. His Ideas are new and revolutionary. There are a lot of concepts in the book that I am still trying to grasp, but Belew really does a good job of explaining new concepts in a comprehensive way. He is really an asset to the Computer Science community.

                            Book Description

The whole universe is organized on patterns that are set by the Lord of the Worlds. Nothing is chaotic or astray, even when they appear to be so. We perceive these patterns as mysterious when we do not understand them, but as soon as their reality is revealed, they become as easy and as definite as simple mathematics. The matter has to do with our perception. Before Newton, falling apples from trees, was a mysterious phenomenon that could not be explained, but would be easily referred to spirits and ghosts wars! When Newton discovered gravity and derived its governing laws, the mystery became as obvious as simple math. In social matters, the patterns are more complicated to experiment and to conclude. In spite of the good progress that we may claim, we are far beyond, and are still inexperienced beginners. Most, if not all, of what we unanimously agree upon today, was preached to our ancestors by a humanity leader who was tutored by a prophet or was himself a prophet. What we experiment ourselves are just confirmations to what was revealed and preached earlier. The Koran offers an easy but definite guide to social prosperity and happiness, and stands unchallenged and incomparable as the only intact Holy Book since the creation of Adam. It documents all social patterns that humanity would need for prosperous and happy life journey on earth and joyful eternal destination in the life after. These patterns stand perfect, either to be embraced or to be derived.
