Book Description
The third edition of The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes covers the basic principles of prokaryotic physiology, biochemistry, and cell behavior. It presents microbial metabolism in the context of the chemical and physical problems that cells must solve in order to grow. Written in a clear, straightforward manner, the book provides a modern perspective on the diversity of microorganisms, and an updated account of the major aspects prokaryotes, such as cell structure, metabolism, developmental biology, environmental adaptation, biofilm formation, and cellular signaling pathways. It is organized according to topic rather than by organism, therefore helping students understand the general principles of physiology and metabolism. Each chapter ends with thought-provoking study questions, a summary, and an extensive list of references to outside research literature students may go to for more information and detailed explanations of material in the text. The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes, Third Edition, is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on microbial physiology of bacterial metabolism. It can be used in conjunction with a laboratory manual, Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory: A Quantitative Approach, by David White and George D. Hegeman. Features of the Third Edition BLIncludes New Material on: Cell Division, Cell-Cell Signaling, Cell Development, Biofilm Formation BLContains boxed asides that cite interesting historical information about important discoveries and notable people in the field from the 19th Century to the 1960s
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Microbiology Reference.......2007-03-23
This is an excellent resource for biochemical pathways, relationships, and diagrams of prokaryotic physiology. The written material is particularly lucid, which is greatly appreciated. While the diagrams are simple and in black-and-white print, their reduced complexity lends clarity to the concepts illustrated. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the microbial sciences at the upper-undergraduate level and beyond.
A difficult but useful book.......2005-08-01
Although it seems impossible to have just one text on the huge field of microbial physiology, this book makes a very valiant effort to be just that. The details are painstakingly researched, the text is concise and clear (no fluff anywhere!), and for such a small book, the author does a masterful job of presenting a huge amount of useful information.
Of course, every book has its downfalls, the main one of this book being its lack of helpful illustrations. Sometimes you just MUST HAVE some help visually to understand something (e.g. mixed acid fermentation, sporulation) and this book often didn't offer that. (Even if there WAS a figure, it was so hard to decipher that you'd be better off with nothing at all.) Also, some huge areas of microbial physiology were completely left out like bacterial stress response.
Overall, not the best but not the worst. It's certainly not a waste of money, but you might want to have some sort of companion book to supply your diagrams and illustrations.
Good information, poor illustrations.......1998-12-22
I used this text as a supplement for my microbial physiology class and found the explantions good, if not complete. The problem I had was that the graphic representations used to show varying processes were either very lacking, or completely absent. Most good science texts use detailed illustrations and colored ink. This text provides neither and would probably serve the more experienced bacterial physiologist as a good reference.

Book Description
This concise yet comprehensive text surveys the field of bacterial metabolism in terms useful to students and researchers. Emphasis is on those metabolic reactions occurring only in bacteria. Thus, the book describes in detail the energy metabolism of the various groups of bacteria. In addition it examines pathways used by bacteria for the degradation of organic compounds, the synthesis of cellular consituents, the regulation of bacterial metabolism and the fixation of molecular nitrogen. The general arrangement of the first edition has been retained. However, it has been thoroughly revised and updated in recognition of the rapid progress of research in this field. Readers will also appreciate the increased emphasis on membrane-associated processes. From the review of the second edition: "If there is a better textbook in its fields, I'm not aware of it, and I feel the book deserves a place on the shelf of any serious student of microbiology." -ASM News

If you like prokaryotes: go and get it!.......2000-07-27
The best microbiology book I've ever read (I haven't finished yet but it's still fun). I think it is the most up to date textbook in microbiology. It covers both biochemical and signal transduction pathways/networks in prokaryotes as well as principles in systematics and short introductions to medical microbiology and biotechnology. At the end of every chapter the various authors provide references to essential papers and reviews (instead to other books, like in Brocks Biology of Microorganisms) to start getting familiar with journals. The graphics are done with less colours but are very professional and as "easy" to understand as the topic they are representing (chemotaxis is not as easy as described in the stryer or brock). Maybe it's too much to read for undergraduates, but very useful for graduate students.

Book Description
The first edition of
The Prokaryotes, published in 1981, took a bold step to become the most comprehensive and authoritative encyclopedic handbook on prokaryotes. Another important step was taken with the second edition in 1992, when the chapters were organized on the basis of the molecular phylogeny as a rational, evolutionary basis for the taxonomy of the prokaryotes. By then, the two volumes of the first edition had expanded to four.
With the decision to publish the handbook electronically, the third edition was the boldest step of all. The advantages were obvious and persuasive: essentially unlimited space, no restrictions on the use of color, and the inclusion of film and animated illustrations. Nevertheless, the affection for a printed handbook was highly underestimated and during the first 5 years of the continuously evolving online version, a growing demand for a new print edition was voiced by the scientific and corporate community.
Thus, Springer is now publishing a third edition in printed form. In total, 7 volumes will make up this new fully revised and updated version. Compared to the second edition, this edition will contain 85% new contents, printed in color throughout. It will be ideally suited for research centers in academia and in the corporate world that need reliable and up-to-date information on the biology of the prokaryotic organisms.

The amazing world of bacteria.......2000-09-22
This is the best and most recent reference book for Microbiologists, bar none. It is packed with a wide range of information and general topics, as well as specific information for each classified bacterial genus.
I have used this as a reference book for my college and professional carer, and have never been disappointed. The information is arranged in an easily usable fashion and gives an exhaustive list of references after each section.
If you are in the fields of Microbiology or Molecular Biology, this book will be a valuable reference for your lab or business.

The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes
ASIN: 0195113136 |
Book Description
Microbial Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory illustrates the major features of growth and metabolism discussed in David White's The Physiology and Biochemistry of Prokaryotes (OUP, 1995). It serves as an ideal adjunct to this text and can also be used in conjunction with other books for the laboratory component of a microbial physiology course. All of the experiments described in this manual have been taught as part of a laboratory course for junior and senior biology and microbiology majors at Indiana University. In addition to reinforcing what students learn in lecture, the experiments guide students through a wide spectrum of analytical techniques including enzyme assays, macromolecular assays, column chromatography, gel electrophoresis, and gas chromatography. Along with enzyme assays and enzyme purification, students do experiments measuring oxygen uptake, chemotaxis, fermentation, and bacterial luminescence. The organisms studied include Escherichia, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Proteus, Rhodospirillum, Photobacterium, and Saccharomyces. The volume is enhanced by appendices which include sections on quantitative problems and their solutions, instructions on how to write a laboratory report, and independent projects that are extensions of the class experiments. The number of experiments exceeds the amount of material usually offered in one semester, giving instructors the option to choose those experiments that are most appropriate for their classes.

Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-04-16
This is a GREAT book, very complete and lucid as the sky. It is revised and expanded from the earlier "Growth of the bacterial cell," and retains something of an emphasis on growth economy.
I strongly suggest the book. I am not sure "Physiology [...]" includes 100% of the material from "Growth [...]," but I see no substantial reason not to study "Physiology [...]" only.
These authors, fine scientific writers, moreover are mostly (or all) editors of the massive king-of-the-hill reference "Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium: Cellular and Molecular Biology." So they know what the hell they are doing, in a big way. But these books are far shorter and more readable than the latter; you can read em while you eat lunch. However they are written at a high level and to an impressive completeness.
I prefer this title over the David White text, not that the White book is bad at all. Whether there are more up-to-date titles in the same niche, I don't know. I do rather doubt that they could be as good as this title, especially with respect to growth economy.
This is not a book on pathogenesis or stress responses, nor does it have much depth on ecology.
