    Book Description

This unique book presents an in-depth analysis of all the emerging ironmaking processes, supplementing the conventional blast furnace method. Various processes for producing solid and liquid iron are discussed, including important features such as process outline, techno-economics, and process fundamentals. The present global status of each process is examined, projections for the future are made, and processes are compared. Beyond the Blast Furnace is valuable reading for process developers, because it gives them a complete picture of various process options. Conventional iron- and steelmakers as well as researchers and practitioners working in the area of alternative processes of ironmaking will also benefit from this ready reference. The book is an ideal text for undergraduate and postgraduate students in metallurgy.

        Book Description

In order to reduce the cost of running blast furnaces (BFs), injected pulverized coal is used rather than coke to fire BFs. As a result of this, unburned fine materials are blown with the gas into the bosh and dead man areas with possible detrimental effects on gas flow and permeability of the coke column. The capacity of the furnace to consume these particles by solution loss is probably one of the limitations to coal injection. It is, therefore, important to understand the physicochemical and aerodynamic behaviour of fines including the change of in-furnace phenomena.

The Committee of Pulverized Coal Combustion and In-Furnace Reaction in BF was set up in 1993 as a cooperative research of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Iron and Steel Institute (ISIJ) to evaluate research initiative into this problem.

This book reports on the JSPS/ISIJ Committee's activities and describes the interpretation of findings drawn from combustion experiments and the results of live furnace applications, and furnace performance.

Blast Furnaces of Sparrows Point covers the history of what was once one of the largest steel plants in the world. From the building of a "company town" in the 1880's, to a plant with 25,000 employees that set world production records, much of what is described no longer exists. The author, who worked on the furnaces in the 1950's, describes the changes in technology in blast furnace practice and the economic forces that led to the downsizing of the plant and the demise of Bethlehem Steel Corp. The 128 page book is 8 x 10, and includes over 60 historical photographs, maps and drawings.

Although the focus of this book is on the evolution of blast furnace technology over a century, the author also portays the history of the company town built by Bethlehem Steel for the employees of the Sparrows Point plant. Book should be of partucular interest to current and past employees of the steel industry

          Book Description

This study covers the world outlook for blast furnace pig iron and pig iron with 6-percent or less silicon content made in steel mills excluding ferroalloys across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

I have never played a game like this. Not only do you solve crimes but you also get to fight with a sword and a gun, not to mention demons! You can capture demons to which after you can summon them into battle. You can also summon them to help you solve crimes effectively. I reccomend the stratagy guide because some parts I was stuck on for a bit, but also so you can get a heads up on extras and demons. Besides, what's a great game like Devil Summoner without a Stratagy Guide? They just go together.

4 out of 5 stars Not DoubleJumps best, but not bad either.......2006-10-13

This guide is probably the guide that most people will consider to be one of DoubleJumps worst. Not because it is bad, but because it is, well, different. We are all used to DoubleJump guides being small and crammed to the brink with detail. This one is distributed through Prima so it is a full sized guide and as far as the detail, there isn't nearly as much to include. Almost all other DoubleJump guides are for epic RPGs and Tactical RPGs, games where there is so much stats and details that they will be huge guides. Since Devil Summoner is an action RPG, there simply isn't nearly the same amount of things to include to create a huge guide. What this one does have though, is sufficient.

The guide goes through the basics and the overviews of characters, controls, etc. Pretty much the norm. Then it takes a page out of Nocturne's guide for anyone familiar with it. They show the area maps from each chapter in one section and then the actual walkthrough breakdown in the next one. While some people have issues with this, it can actually be quite nice for those of us who don't want to pass up any items, but also don't want to be lead by hand through the game either.

The walkthrough is pretty much the meat of the guide, nothing too amazing. There is a secrets section, but surprisingly, there really isn't much in the way of hidden things in the game. There are several subquests or side stories covered in the walkthrough, but the secrets section itself only contains three or four major things (some of which are only for second playthrough).

Luckily the wonderful job that DoubleJump has always done on bestiaries, demon fusion and item/magic tables hasn't changed at all. Everything is all laid out clearly and is easy to understand. For some people this may be the most used section, just to find out the enemies weaknesses.

Overall, the guide isn't anything special. For those of us used to DoubleJump's monster "bible" guides, this isn't it. There just simply isn't that much information to put into the guide in comparison to those of other games. What is in the guide though, is done very well and in a clear and concise fashion. It is a good guide, but definately not a necessity for the game.

The comfortable world of Martris Drayke, second son of King Bricen of Margolan, is shattered when his older half-brother, Jared, and Jared¿s dark mage, Foor Arontala, kill the king and seize the throne. Tris is the only surviving member of the royal family aside from Jared the traitor. Tris flees with three friends: Soterius, captain of the guard; Carroway, the court¿s master bard; and Harrtuck, a member of the royal guard. Tris harbors a deep secret. In a land where spirits walk openly and influence the affairs of the living, he suspects he may be the mage heir to the power of his grandmother, Bava K¿aa, once the greatest sorceress of her age. Such magic would make Tris a Summoner, the rarest of magic gifts, capable of arbitrating between the living and the dead.

2 out of 5 stars Minimal character development.......2007-10-01

There is a lack of polish, and definitely the run-on sentences and comma splices are distracting, but not necessarily the author's fault (no copy editor?).

The plot is formulaic, but interesting enough that it kept me reading until the end. It had the potential to be very good. However, I felt that it read a bit like a roleplaying game: Here is your mage, a prince on a quest. Here are your warriors, your rogue, your bard, your cleric.

When Kiara makes her first appearance, you get a nearly-MarySue description of her hair color, the length of the hair, the way her hair moves when released from its bonds, etc. Many of the characters were undeveloped, especially the villians. I did not feel I knew any more about the bad guys by the end of the book than at the beginning. Tris' companions were so secondary and shallow that at times I forgot their names and/or roles.

The vampire element was surprising. As in, it was a complete surprise how they popped up suddenly and unexpectedly.

The first half of the book does not seem so much Tris' adventure as it does completing quests for experience points in something like World of Warcraft. "Collect X amount of stones for a cairn and deliver a silver piece to the farm at the edge of town. Speak to the innkeeper for your reward!"

It struck me as being more on par with a very good fanfiction rather than a published novel. If there had been an already-established backstory, world, enemies, allies, and main characters, the minimalist descriptions and actions of the characters would have been acceptable. I felt the author could have fleshed it out into two or three more books.

5 out of 5 stars A tale of charisma and woe.......2007-08-07

The Summoner relates much that we have experienced elsewhere. The corruption of power, the bane of family, a hero who never wished to be a hero . . . such are the broad topics that span many novels, but they are also keys to the treasured chest of good fantasy which, when used appropriately, unlock a story that transcends mere pages and settles itself inside your mind. Such a tale is well deserved not just for its components and purpose, but also due to the author's determination for us, the awed audience, to understand that there is a power within each character. A grand tale cannot begin at the beginning, but rather it must relate of powerful heroes arrayed against mighty enemies. This the author does well, and leaves us not only with the foreknowledge of the story's general path but also with the yearning to be told such a wonderful story.

If Gail Martin can continue her story with such passion and persuasion, I may find myself putting her books beside the well-crafted stories by the likes of R.A. Salvatore and Elaine Cunningham.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-07-31

I thought the book was great! It was exactly what I expected and wanted out of a fantasy novel. It was a fast read and kept me hooked from the beginning. I can't wait for the second novel to be released!

                  5 out of 5 stars Truly magical.......2007-07-17

With a book cover this gorgeous, I had high expectations from the start. And I'm happy to say that I was more than impressed.

When Jared executes a coup to take his father's place as King of Margolan, younger brother Tris barely makes it out alive. With just a few of his trusted friends, Tris and his company flee to parts unknown. And Tris begins to realize he has an amazing gift: that he may be the predecessor to his grandmother, Bava Kaa. Making him an incredibly powerful mage and Summoner, able to speak to and hold power over the dead.

I loved this story from beginning to end. Packed with suspense, excitement, and wonder, The Summoner is a true epic fantasy. This first installment follows Tris' journey to find a way to overthrow Jared, while making new friends, learning more about his powers, and discovering his destiny.

Other reviewers tend to criticize for using elements from other novels, but as I've said before, this doesn't bother me. After all, "There's nothing new under the sun." Authors are going to be influenced by what they've read in the past. There's no getting around that. New authors should take good ideas and make them their own. And Gail Martin has done a wonderful job of taking well-known story elements and infusing them into a truly magical tale.

5 out of 5 stars Big Book, Fast Read, I can't Wait for the Next ONE!!!.......2007-06-12

I really enjoyed the book. I just can't wait for the next one. Adult without going over the top. I loved the twist at the end of this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Dark Fantasy & Romance .......2007-03-06

The Summoner turned out to be a delightful surprise for me. I was somewhat intrigued with the concept that Shadowclaw receives pleasure from pain and the cover art really made me buy this book. The tale revolves around a kidnapped woman who is seeking freedom by attempting to seduce Shadowclaw who is making sure she doesn't escape.

This is one of those stories where I actually liked the leading male Shadowclaw much more than the heroine, who was so naive about obvious situations. However, that didn't detract from the plot which is filled with lots of interesting twists and turns and surprising revelations about Shadowclaw. The only thing that would have made this book even better in my opinion was if I could have read some of the story from Shadowclaw's perspective as he had so many complex issues.

Overall, this was a very good read and the ending was perfect.

                  5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-03-01

I enjoyed this book. Interesting plot and the characters, elements of fantasy and magic and of course lots of sexy scenes. The only thing that bothered me is the name of the heroine. I know it's kind of petty but I just couldn't get passed it. We don't know exactly when this story takes place. Since there are lords, castles and warriors let's assume it is medieval times. So if there are characters named Shadowclaw and Darkraider then why oh WHY is there a woman with the last name of Delgado?? Other than that I thought it was a very good read.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the cover alone.......2006-10-01

4 1/2 for the actual story. Overall this book was really good, it had a storyline, a great hero, a heroine that was likeable if not a bit obtuse, and was not so filled with sex that it took away from the story. (Although there is enough in it)I do have a slight complaint that there were several editing mistakes but not enough to take away from the book. I enjpyed this story, loved the cover and plan to put it on my keeper shelf. I do hope N. Delonpre puts out more books for me to try.

...only because of the help from this guide. I got stuck on more that one level in this game, and the well written guide was the only thing that kept me moving forward. The author definitely played through the game and it results in a very good guide.

3 out of 5 stars the "pretty helpful " guide.......2003-04-24

Overall the summoner 2 strategy guide is not a bad guide, but doesnt cover everything. When I buy a stategy guide I want it to have everything not just most of it.In this book there are no strategies for fighting bosses, no strategies for certain areas, and I have found several errors (10+). But the quest guides are extremely helpful ( most of the time). It doesnt even tell you how to build up your characters either (which to me is the most important part of the game!!).

Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Summoner (ViZ, 2002)

Summoner, the sixth chapter of Yu Watase's manga epic Fushigi Yugi, is the first one in a while that's jumped up and demanded I read it in one sitting. This is good stuff, and it's finally shown the promise hinted at in the second volume.

Miaka, eternally hungry schoolgirl and priestess of Suzaku, has finally gathered the seven celestial warriors, so the summoning ceremony can begin-- as long as they can recover Tamahome, a celestial warrior placed under a spell by the Seiryu camp, who are opposed to the Suzaku camp (and just happen to be headed up by Yui, Miaka's former best friend). The dramatic tension in the storylines revolves around these two events.

Those who have followed the series up to this point, grab this one at your earliest convenience; it's the best of the lot so far. Those who gave up when the going got kind of rough in books three and four, persevere; there's a payoff, and it's worth it. *** ½

                    5 out of 5 stars Great volume.......2005-12-19

This is a wonderful volume of Fushigi Yuugi. Miaka and Tamahome are a wonderful couple with a great love story in every colume. This volume is great. Tamahome comes back and Miaka goes over to him. Miaka kisses Tamahome and tells him she still loves him, even though his personality may have been changed by the spell. Tamahome comes back and his true self returns. Miaka and Tamahome hug. Their embrace is so loving and romantic. Tamahome retreives the scroll and takes it back. Miaka and Tamahome make up under the moonlight. Tamahome apologizes and hugs Miaka. Tamahome promises to always be by her side. Miaka and Tamahome kiss. Their kiss at night is so romantic and drawn so well. Tamahome returns Miaka's ribbon before the ceremony to summon Suzaku. It's such a sweet scene and Miaka and Tamahome's romance is so wonderful in this volume.

I'm an avid anime fan, and I read manga, and I think Yu Watase has created the most beautiful, adventurous, romantic graphic novel's i have ever read in my life. I may be totally biased, but it's a fantastic and unique concept, which of course has been done before, but have the characters ever taken a life of their own like they have? Any reader can identify with at least one of the characters, they have so much life and truth, it's unbelievable. She makes you question your life, truth and values, and no one has really ever been able to do that to me. Yes, I am mildly obsessed, but I adore and love these graphic novels, and I recommend them to everyone!

                    3 out of 5 stars summoner guide.......2002-08-12

I bought this book as I was getting 'bogged down' with some of the side quests.
I found the Prima Guide helpful with these and it contains some useful information about weapons, armour, etc and has fairly useful maps.
Having said that, the text is not always clear and is at times downright difficult to read and the book itself is a little flimsy. I also feel that the publishers could have put a lot more detail in than they did.
All in all quite a useful book if you are stuck but certainly not the best of it's type and not the best value for money.

2 out of 5 stars A great guide if you want a second copy of the manual........2001-07-12

I was dissapointed in the guide in that it contained next to none of the secret things about the game. It contained no statistics on summoned creatures, spells, items (as far as amount of points healed, etc.), and many other things, all of which would have been most helpful. I must give credit in that the guide does tell you where to go, I'll give it that. But in order to fully experience the game, however, a far more in depth and detailed guide would be needed. All-in-all the guide leaves a lot to be desired. I think a great game like summoner should have a great guide to go with it.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth more than a couple bucks.......2001-04-02

I have to start by saying this is the second worst strategy guide I have ever seen (the FFIX book being the worst).

The character information is not quite complete, the tables (of weapons, armor, and such) are very unorganized, and if you followed the walkthrough word-for-word, you'd end up finding barely half the stuff in the game (if you even managed to complete it). Many of the arrows pointing to objects on a map are off by a significant margin and a good number of them point to objects that aren't in the area at all. And the book completely neglects many of the things you have to do to complete the quests. And before anyone says anything, yes, you can piece most of that together when cross-referencing the quest section and other parts of the book. But that's what a strategy guide is supposed to be for--if I wanted to piece it together I wouldn't have bothered with the book.

The bottom line is, the maps and what there is of the character information (what's there is actually quite good....but there should be more) are the only two reasons to get this book. So if you don't get a deal on it, and have to pay more than a couple bucks for it, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Get help for this PS2 release!!!.......2000-12-04

If you're one of the lucky people who managed to walk home with a Playstation 2, good for you. I think Summoner is one of the best RPG's so far for PS2, and the numerous mini-quests and countless items are what people will most likely need to refer to the guide book for. This book has a lot of combat strategies and there's no denying that Summoner's battle system is very deep, engrossing, and a little complicated at times. This guide doesn't spoil the plot at all, and all people can get a lot of help from the guide
