Fantastic.......2007-01-06
I gulped when I first saw the price of this book, but I took the plunge and I am delighted to have it. While Sharon Miller gives you some written instructions for shawls, she gives you many options so you can design and make your own shawl. I have been knitting for over 60 years and feel confident of my abilities, but Sharon is teaching me some new skills and I love it. I recommend this book heartily.
A must-have for lace knitters.......2006-08-12
Directed to somewhat experienced knitters, this book is a jewel. All the main patterns in Shetland lace are covered, providing detailed instructions and CHARTS! The various techniques are explained with clear pictures, and there are very useful tips scattered around the book. Not many patterns for complete projects, but the goal is to teach the readers to make their own.
Fantastic!.......2006-06-03
If you want to knit Shetland Lace and like to design your own patterns, buy this expensive book and forgo the others. This book is the bible of Shetland lace knitting. Finally, a good explanation and comparison between "knitted lace" and "lace knitting". This book is so good, I sometimes peruse it while eating breakfast.

Some good information, but not a book for everyone.......2007-07-17
The books is very detailed and has a lot of information. I was a little disappointed with it though, as it seems to be geared more towards breeders and people who show their dog.
Now one may argue that the average pet owner does not need THAT much information.. but I would beg to differ. Some parts of the book relating to ownership could have been bigger, while other parts of the book are unnecessary to the average pet owner.
For me, there was far too much information about the breed's standards.. and then the information about mating and whelping... All totally unecessary to me. I could have used more information about training, what to expect as the dog grows, and dog/people socialization techniques. Now, there is *some* information on these areas, but you could probably write entire books on these topics alone; this book could have used more material on these topics.
Still, it is not a bad book by any means. I give it 3 stars as a pet owner, and probably 5 stars if you are a breeder or are into competitive dog shows. I'll average that out to 4 stars overall.
Sheltie Talk.......2003-08-19
This is an EXCELLENT book for the new sheltie owner. Very in depth information, and very easy to read. Contains info for everything from bringing the new puppy home, to basics in obedience and agility training. Only reason she didn't get five ***** stars, is because she got a bit "windy" with long explanations, and it is so easy to read, they aren't necessary. You must have this book!:)
The best there is!.......2002-07-26
"Sheltie Talk" is the best Sheltie book out there, in spite of it's age (1985). I keep hearing rumors that there will be an updated edition, but I haven't seen it yet. I keep hoping.
This book has more information than most people will ever need about the breed, and it's very accessible even to the novice owner. Give this one 'paws up'!
THE only book you will ever need!.......2002-05-26
It is the Sheltie "bible" for all breeders. I recommend it to all puppy buyers. It is not only for breeders and exhibitors of Shelties but for the companion dog owner as well. I know people with other breeds that just LOVE this book and have it as well!
Definately a FIVE star rating!!
If you don't find it in here you don't need to know it.......2001-05-13
This book tells you absolutely everything you need to know about raising, breeding, training,showing... just plain owning a Shetland Sheepdog (sheltie). It has photos, instructions, and diagrams to cover everything. If you can afford only one book get Sheltie Talk. I can't say enough good things about it. 5 stars are not enough.

Train your Shetland Sheepdog.......2006-03-10
I was disappointed in this book. It was a "read between the lines" kind of book. Was not helpful in training my dog at all.
If Sheltie is the Breed for you--this is your book!.......2002-04-30
Agree with with other reviewer that this is a great resource for sheltie owners, or propsective owners. She's correct in providing the background to why Shelties aren't the breed for everyone, as they demand attention.
She provides needed tips on how to keep the Shelties in your life happy and you in turn happy with them! They do need to work and she provides training tips on doing just that.
Info is provided on selection, stages of development, early puppy training, basic obedience, formal training, problem prevention and solutions, and advanced sports and activities.
We have our two Shelties through obedience and now into agility and can vouch how much fun this breed truly is. This book will aid your enjoyment of this intelligent and loyal breed.
Great Book.......2002-03-18
This book had great information about the Sheltie. I felt it was quite helpful to me. It also had great pictures!!
If you have a sheltie, get this book........2001-08-03
This is quite easily the most useful sheltie book that I own. Most books about shelties are slim volumes that talk about grooming, the breed history, and a little about temperment. This book dives right in to telling you how to housebreak your sheltie, how to train them to sit, heel, come and stay, and more. It covers a little about competing with shelties in obedience, agility, and herding, and has tons of wonderful pictures. It's full of great, practical, advice. If you're a new dog owner, you should really pick up this book and read it.

Book Description
This pony knows quite a few tricks!
A new petting zoo has opened in River Heights. Nancy, George, and Bess can't wait to check it out -- the zoo has the cutest shetland pony named Buttons. And it looks like the Clue Crew won't have to wait very long to get a glimpse of Buttons -- he keeps escaping from his pen and showing up all over town! He's getting pretty famous for eating the flowers in everyone's front lawns. As much as Nancy secretly wishes Buttons would turn up on her lawn, she knows it's important to make sure he stays put. The only trouble is, no one knows how he's getting out. Sounds like it's time for the Clue Crew to saddle up and settle this pony problem!
Book Description
Small yet adaptable and durable, the Shetland Sheepdog embodies the characteristics of the rugged Scottish mountain country from where it originated. Originally developed to work the herds of the Shetland Islands, and commonly known as the "Sheltie," this highly skilled sheep-herder has won admirers for his working ability and stamina, while his friendly disposition and compact size have made him a favorite of pet dog owners around the world. This book provides the much-needed factual information about the Shetland Sheepdog and its ancestry, character and standard, as well as the proper selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and behavior of the breed. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup's arrival, housebreaking and preventing puppy problems.
In addition to an extremely authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Shetland Sheepdog from puppyhood to the senior years.

A great book for new sheltie owners........2004-08-28
After losing our beloved dog TJ after 16 years of great companionship, I was looking for a good book to get back into the swing of owning a puppy. This book is very good at covering all the basics of dog ownership and also touches on the advanced aspects of ownership. All the info. is up to date ( unlike the Sheltie "bible" Sheltie Talk...which hasnt been updated since the mid '80's.). Very nicely illustrated with drawings and color photos..with a nice back section to put in important info about your sheltie and a nice baby photo!
Customer Reviews:
Great book, an enormous sheltie family tree........2000-08-19
I found a copy of this book at a pet store for 2.50!!!! It is worth much more than that however. Being a Breeder and fancier this book offers a wealth of information, especially on kennels and lines. I was delighted that the book featured many of the best dogs in the lines I am working with. As another reviewer put it, we should look to this book to see what shelties looked like when they were bred the to the standard, how they should look, unlike the current trends in sheltie today, that I feel are poor. If someone wanted to see some excellent example of the breed, I would tell them to look at his book, rather than go to a dog show. This book shows the great kennels and the great dogs, and is a necessity for any serious fancier. However, I do not recommend it for the casual pet owner, or anyone who is simply not intrested in lines or champions and simply wants a basic guide to learn how to properly care for their sheltie, and what to expect. For this person, I recommend "Shetland sheepdog: A Guide to a Happy, Healthy pet" by cathy merrithew. It is much more appropriate for a pet owner, yet still contains enough info on sheltie history to to be boring or too basic. The book of the shetland sheepdog is a valuable reference to any fanciers bookshelf. I refer to mine often. If you are serious about the sheltie, go buy a copy!
Wealth of Information for breeders: Learn your roots.......1998-08-03
This book is an excellent resource for those who want to seriously develop a bloodline and are ready for the work required to research. With a wealth of pedigrees and pictures you should be able to find quality individuals behind your Sheltie. If you are new to the breed the pictures should give you an overall view so you can determine what type (and line) fit your expectations. Older pictures (less 'perfected' than modern photo work) honestly show where we came from. A worthwhile purchase for serious breeders or lovers of the breed.
I lvoed looking at the sheltie before they were "improved.".......1997-06-09
I intend on buying this book sometime soon, when I can afford it. There are many pictures of
my shelties line and I enjoy looking at them, over
and over. Looking at the "old timers" I see what
I love in the sheltie and will continue to look for,
although modern breeders have altered their look drastically their has to be some that are true
to the great champions. Maybe, the breeders of
today should look to the past for the shelties future
Lots of pictures, but not worth the money........1996-01-23
This is a large book, with many, many pictures of shelties,
quite a few of them in color. However, there is not much else
of practical use to the casual Sheltie owner.
