Water Gardens.......2007-07-26
A great reference for the home gardener. Very clear color pictures to
spark ideas for your water feature.
A definite 'Must Have' for beginning water gardeners.......2007-05-16
The cover pulled me in. I was in the process of designing that very same 'round' pool, in a similar patio.
But the interior of the book is what convinced me that the price was more than worth it.
The photo images are crisp and beautiful, the text easy to understand and the entire book is a grand encouragement to creativity.
This book is now one of the treasured volumes in my personl library.
Anna Marie Fritz, author and artist (and water gardener).

Water Garden Book.......2000-07-28
This is the best book I've seen for Water Garden plants. The detailed discription of the vast veriaty of plants is incredable. I would recommend this book to be the first and perhaps the only book you'll need for choosing your plants for your pond or water garden.
What every water gardener needs if they grow water plants!.......2000-03-21
This is a truly excellent book. For those of you who have already purchased water garden books, you know how frustrating it is when they don't give any detail about the plants they use, ("for a small container garden, use a dwarf water lily..."), but is that beautiful Panama Pacific water lily a dwarf, is it medium, or large? This book will give you those details. It tells you about the foibles of water plants, (did you know that some water lilies will melt in too much heat?) It includes basics on many different varieties of water plants, some basics of planting aquatic plants in the water garden and some very bare-bones on putting fish into a water garden, (but that's not what it is designed for). I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars, because they did not consistently include the common names in the index, even to reference back to the latin name. You can find water lily, which refers you to Nymphaea, but you can't find hair grass except under Eleocharis. If you are looking for a book that covers a wide variety of aquatic plants, I highly recommend this one.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Rock and Water Gardening.......2006-11-10
A bit too 'jokey' but covers just about everything.
Amazon.com
If you find aquatic plants fascinating but aren't sure where to start, let this thorough how-to manual be your guide. Brimming with practical insights and photographic inspirations, the Complete Guide to Water Gardening supplies step-by-step instructions for all types of water features, from full-blown oriental ponds to a simple container of bog plants. Possibilities are only as limited as your size and budget.
Proper planning is essential to good results, and this book takes it nice and slow. Explanations are straightforward and comprehensible for folks who have some previous home improvement experience, but for a first-ever project, this may be biting off a bit more than you can chew. Leveling, backfilling, laying concrete--these are a few of the details to prepare for in adding even a small pond to your garden. You'll see your efforts pay off quickly, though. Flourishing plants and a return of natural amphibians are a couple of rewards in sight.
Plant selection involves a good understanding of this developing ecosystem, and the sections concerning options and routine maintenance are specific in the requirements of your new garden. Close-up shots of healthy plants and systems, as well as diseases and pests, will provide an excellent education. If you're looking for a new adventure in gardening and don't mind getting your feet wet, this could provide just the experience you're looking for. --Jill Lightner

Good for info.......2004-12-04
This is a great little reference tool for building a pond. It does lack detail in construction or things like filtration and upkeep.
The outdoor plant and fish sections were informitive. It gives a lot more detail there but it's getting there certain chapters were a little vague. It's a good book for basic know-how and we be good to add to a group of books on the topic. However not stand alone one stop resource.
good, but not complete.......2004-08-11
This is a very good book on water gardening and does have some nice pictures. I must disagree with another reviewer; this is NOT the only book you'll ever need on the subject. It is very good and a valuable recourse, but has left me with many questions still unanswered.
OK for general info........2002-06-07
My husband and I found this book helpful as a general reference for building our pond. We were disappointed that there wasn't more detail in certain key areas. For example, when you look up pH in the index and turn to the selected page, they just show you a picture of a pH test kit. It would be nice to know why we need one!
The equipment section would have been enhanced with a greater variety of filtration/pump set-ups and the pros/cons of each configuration.
The section about plants is excellent; it is extensive, with detailed thumbnail descriptions, and helpfully separated into groups.
I would recommend this book, but not as a complete source of water garden info.
Got to buy this book.......2002-01-09
We have a giant hole in our backyard and it is a tribute to this excellent book. It describes the process of creating a water feature as well as or better than any other publication on the market. We will have a wildlife and bird resource thanks to the quality of this publication. My sincere thanks to the author/editor/writer.
THE Book on Water Garden Construction and Maintenance.......2000-04-19
If you want to build a pond/stream/waterfall, and you want the pleasure of doing it yourself, this is THE book to buy. There are several good ones available, and you should consider some of them to help yourself gain valuable knowledge about the subject.
However, of all the books in this field, this is the most comprehensive, best illistrated, and the most diverse guide of its kind.
The Hard cover edition (if available) will be a book you'll want to keep with your other favorites.

If you want a natural-looking pond or stream . . ........2002-07-13
Don't waste money on multiple lesser books. Buy this one! You won't regret it. Especially if you want a natural look, such as plants to the edge of the water or easing into the water. This is my key reference for constructing my water garden. Excellent construction techniques for natural edges - no necklace of rocks - and stream flow and finishing to mimic natural creeks and streams. Very inspirational photos of water features that will surprise you that they are man-made, and sized for average gardens as well as larger acreages. Line drawings detail construction techniques showing placement of liner, underlayment and structural (concrete) support for heavy rocks, etc. Several options shown for each. Written such that homeowner could do it themselves. Only caveat is that the designs are based in Britain and may (or may not) need adjustment for severe winter regions. Although primarily a construction guide, excellent photos of completed gardens provide inspiration for plantings. There is a brief review of major species adapted to this sort of garden. I am looking forward to the new edition, due out in Fall 2002, which promises inclusion of some U.S. information. Don't accept less. Raise your expectations of what your water feature can look like. Buy this book.

Great addition and amplification of ACW battlefield guides........2006-08-30
If you are familiar with either or both of the two editions of the excellent "Civil War Battlefield Guide", then you should add "The Official Virginia Civil War Guide" to your collection. This book has the advantage than in focusing on about 1/3rd as much of the war, it can do so in far greater depth.
Many small conflicts that don't receive more than a mention in the other guides are prominently and competently presented here. This makes the work a handy reference tool and an interesting read in its own right.
The layout is an improvement over the previously mentioned guides in several ways. Not only is there increased depth, but tactical maps are included for every event covered--rather than just the major ones. In addition, simple campaign maps are also included (something missing in many battle monographs even.) One weakness is that the tactical maps are not overlaid onto topographical maps, so in cases where the guides both have maps the general work is preferable in most instances.
The information on visitor centers, directions, and interesting background is very helpful as well. Also of note, the introduction states that all royalties from the book will go towards preservation efforts in Virginia.
One can only hope that similar works will be produced for other regions. This guide sets a fine standard for others to follow.
Much more than a travel guide.......2004-07-16
This is one of the most useful guides I've ever read. Virginia was host to nearly 1/3rd of all Civil War engagements, and this guide covers them all like a mini-history of the war. Unlike travel books that are organized geographically, this guide organizes them chronologically. Each campaign is prefaced by a detailed overview, followed by concise (from 1 to 4 pages, depending on the battle's importance) but engrossing descriptions of the individual engagements. These descriptions make this a great book to browse through when you're not in the car. Most sites' summaries touch on their condition--whether they're threatened by development (as too many are) and whether they're in private hands or protected by the park service.
But the maps are where this book really stands out. Each battle features a very clear map designating army positions and historical roads, as well as historical markers (the author also wrote the /A Guidebook to Virginia's Historical Markers/), parking, and visitors' centers. Best of all, though, many battles are illustrated with paintings or photographs of the sites, and the point-of-view of these pictures is marked on each map!
