Learning to Slow Down and Pay Attention: A Kid's Book About ADHD
ASIN: 096603662X |
Book Description
This is the first in a series of books for kids with ADHD, grades 2-4. Designed to boost your child's self-esteem and to help your child develop a love of reading.
Customer Reviews:
Not Only an Author.......2002-06-28
Mrs. Roberts is not only known as an author to me. My brother Josh and I both had her as our Kindergarten teacher! We've both read the books as they come out and love to read them remembering our times we had when we in her class room! This book truly brings out the kid in you!
That's Me All Right!.......2001-09-29
Even though I'm not a second grade girl, as I read this charming little book I found myself remembering my own childhood and saying, "That's me all right!" This book is a valuable resource for any parent with an ADHD child. In plain language, using an interesting story, Barabara Roberts portrays the dilemmas that haunt every child with attention deficit disorder. "But, Mom, let me tell you what really happened" is their theme song. This is a MUST have and MUST read for every parent of an ADHD child.
I would urge Ms. Roberts to consider a similar series with a male character.
Fun, affirming picture book for the active girl.......2001-05-28
Phoebe is an enthusiastic, creative girl. Because of her high activity level, she has has to struggle to pay attention in class, and has only one good friend. Girls with hyperactive AD/HD as well as other active kids may see something of themselves in Phoebe.
Phoebe's principal and her mother are sympathetic but also help Phoebe see that she has some responsibilities for her actions. In the end, Phoebe's energy and daring make her the class heroine. She takes quick action to rescue the class pet.
This book is uses superb, sensitive illustrations to follow the text. I especially liked how the pictures conveyed the strong bond of affection between Phoebe and her mother.
In the story, Phoebe is never formally identified as having AD/HD. I like having such a book because it can be used to explore behaviors without limiting ourselves to a specific diagnosis.

Wonderful book for novice gardeners.

WHAT FLOWER IS THAT?.......2002-06-16
THE CONTENTS OF THE BOOK IS GREAT. BUT IT WAS NOT THE BOOK I ORDERED. THIS BOOK I GOT FROM SUPERBSTUFF WAS DIRTY, SMELLY, AND HAD THE PAGES STUCK TOGETHER BY FOOD OR SOMETHING. THE FRONT AND BACK COVERS ARE DIRTY. IT MUST HAVE BEEN PACKED AWAY FOR MANY YEARS IN A DAMP AND DIRTY PLACE. I AM VERY UNHAPPY WITH IT AND I WILL BE SENDING IT BACK.
The book I grab first when trying to name a flower!.......1999-02-01
A large inventory of the flowers that you will see most often in the garden. The pictures are excellent for locating that particular flower when all you have to go on, is a flower you plucked by hand. (So often NO ONE knows the name.) That is when I reach for my very worn copy of Stirling MacOboy's, What Flower is That? I have over 40 flower search books, and still this book seems to be my favorite. It is easy to use and has Botanical names and pronunciation. All-in-all, a must have in the home library. Sorry to see it is no longer in print. Will make it a very valuable book.

Book Description
She was called "The Florence Nightingale of America." From the fighting at Gettysburg to the capture of Richmond, this young Quaker nurse worked tirelessly to relieve the suffering of soldiers. She was one of the great heroines of the Union. Cornelia Hancock served in field and evacuating hospitals, in a contraband camp, and (defying authority) on the battlefield. Her letters to family members are witty, unsentimental, and full of indignation about the neglect of wounded soldiers and black refugees. Hancock was fiercely devoted to the welfare of the privates who had "nothing before them but hard marching, poor fare, and terrible fighting." Originally published in 1937 as South after Gettysburg, Hancock's letters were edited by Henrietta Stratton Jaquette, the granddaughter of a cousin. This Bison Books edition is introduced by Jean V. Berlin, the editor of A Confederate Nurse: The Diary of Ada W. Bacot, 1860-1863.
Customer Reviews:
Okay. Longer edition is better........2001-06-13
I wish the press had released the other version of this book. The introduction isn't very helpful.
A very determined lady!.......2001-05-23
As an English civil war re-enactor, and a nurse by profession, Cornelia Hancock brings alive the horror, and difficulties faced by the wounded and the woman who choose to nurse them. The book is useful in its detail, and describes medical care at the battlefield, in hospitals, and the improvements made as the war developed. A book worth owning.

Customer Reviews:
A fascinating read, but a frustrating history.......2005-05-21
This is a good book for anyone interested in finding out more about some of the more interesting figures of Restoration-era England. Despite the fact that Norrington is prone to gush at times about the fascination and charm of letters that are, in some cases, little more than quickly dashed-off notes, as a body the collection is quite interesting.
Norrington's strength (and weakness) lies in her ability to string together the letters, filling in the context with incidents in the life of Charles II and his sister, Minette, the two main correspondents. Unfortunately, Norrington uses about a fifth of the footnotes I'd like to have seen. For every anecdote whose provenance she footnotes, there are four she doesn't. There is a bibliography, but some of the unfootnoted incidents are so so vaguely attributed in the text that I'd be hard-pressed to know where to begin searching them out in her sources. She includes no index, either, which is quite frustrating as well.
Still, it's a good read, and those interested in the Restoration would already be in Norrington's debt had she only assembled the letters and nothing more. The book is worth buying just on the strength of the letters, if you can find it for a reasonable price.
It should be emphasized that these letters are most interesting from a historical perspective, however, and not as masterpieces of the art of letter writing. For that, try Charles' and Minette's contemporary, Rochester, in Rochester's letters, edited by Jeremy Treglown.

Book Description
Until the middle-aged, unmarried Isabella Bird (1831-1904) left her native Scotland for an independent life of travel, she was debilitated by illness, suffering from "neuralgia, pain in my bones, pricking like pins and needles in my limbs, excruciating nervousness, exhaustion, inflamed eyes, sore throat, swelling of the glands behind each ear, stupidity." Bird was so weak that she required a steel support to hold her head up and spent most of her time confined to bed. Desperate to find a cure, her doctors finally packed her off to the Pacific and Switzerland. Once there, the forty-year-old invalid miraculously recovered, and became determined to seek any adventure that allowed her to see the singular beauty of nature.
In Hawaii, she was the first woman to climb the world's highest volcano; in Perak, she rode elephants through the jungles; in Colorado, she scaled 14,000 foot mountains, spent six months traveling mostly alone on horseback, and fell in love with a one-eyed desperado named Rocky Mountain Jim. But whenever she came home to Scotland, her symptoms returned, making another trip essential. Bird's remarkable journeys took her to the remotest parts of the world and brought her considerable fame. She became the first female Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, advised Prime Minister William Gladstone on the issue of Armenian Christians, and was presented to Queen Victoria in 1893. Her numerous travel writings, including 'The Hawaiian Archipelago,' 'A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains,' 'Unbeaten Tracks in Japan,' and 'The Golden Chersonese,' remain popular today.
In this fascinating collection of Bird's previously unpublished letters to her homebound younger sister Henrietta, one experiences her journeys firsthand and gains insight into the ambiguous private life of a woman who often invented her public face. Containing correspondence from her first two grand tours to Australia, Hawaii, and Colorado in 1872-1873, and to Japan, China, Malaya, and the Holy Land in 1878-1879, 'Letters to Henrietta' provides a fresh view of the legendary Victorian traveler.

A sorrowful triumph........2006-07-18
Anyone suffering from unrequited love will find comfort and encouragement through this reading. Had she not suffered heartbreak, thousands may have lost the benefit of her significant power to love.
This book is wonderful. Anyone even slightly romantic will l.......1997-10-29
The primary significance of this work and we are deeply in debtto the fine editing of Baila Shargel, is that it presents to thepublic for the first time, Henrietta Szold the great writer. We come back to a time when letters were still carefully crafted; we bask in the warmth and honesty of her prose. We are continually stunned by her brilliance and begin to mourn not her loss or Ginzberg's but ours. It is we the Jewish people who have lost a great writer to the service of others, to the drudgery of editing which is so often women's work. This work is bound to become a classic. It shows yet another side of this very heroic woman who serves as a model for us all. More available at JCN!! END
