"Good farmers are artists. They paint the landscape with squash, corn, celery, beans, and a cornucopia of other fruits and vegetables. Their tools are the rake, the hoe, the pitchfork, the shovel, and the shears. Like all artists, they seek to balance technique with heart and harmony." Maryjo Koch celebrates the beauty of the natural world, mixing plenty of charm and wit into the scientific formula. For instance, did you know that the dandelion is named for its jagged leaves, which resemble a lion's teeth?
Though most adults will already know the "body plan" of a flower, the information is presented in such an appealing fashion as to bring out the eager student in all of us. Each page takes a unique approach to its subject matter and shows off Koch's wide variety of illustrative styles--straight naturalist paintings alongside cherubs sleeping in a lily pond. "Barking up the right tree" is Koch's way of imparting a tidbit about the importance of a tree's bark and how not to damage a tree by toying with this outer layer. Venture through eccentric English gardens, Japanese gardens, formal French gardens, topiary, and the fine art garden. As Claude Monet said, "More than anything I must have flowers, always, always."

gorgeous!.......2004-06-22
An absolutely gorgeous book-I cannot imagine why it has gone out of print! It is a great resource for artists and needlecrafters, as well as full of interesting information.
Aa captivating Science book.......2000-05-28
As a homeschooling mom I am always on the look-out for captivating books. This book is hand printed and ilustrated extensively in Maryjo's delicate watercolors. A "living book" that will enhance your scientific look at seeds, flowers, leaves, trees, and fruit. Her informative articles merge with her botanical illustrations like a Naturalists nature notebook. Perfect compliment to Handbook of Nature Study, by Anna Comstock and Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady, by Edith Holden. Beneficial to all ages.
Book Description
Heirloom seeds are more than the promise of next summer's crookneck squash or jewel-colored zinnias. They're living antiques handed down from one generation to the next, a rich inheritance of flavor and beauty from long ago and, often, far away. They are sometimes better adapted to pests and harsh conditions than many modern varieties and often simply smell or taste better. Gardening with Heirloom Seeds serves as a resource for gardeners, cooks, and plant lovers of all levels of expertise who want to know more about finding, sharing, and propagating the seeds of heirloom flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
In these beautifully illustrated pages, Lynn Coulter describes fifty old-fashioned species that have their roots in the past, from the Frenchman's Darling, a flowering herb whose seeds were pocketed by Napoleon Bonaparte when he invaded Egypt in 1798, to Snow White beets, an old Dutch favorite that will not stain the cook's fingers red. Most of the plants included here will grow all across the United States; a few are best suited for warmer climates.
The text is sprinkled with practical advice from heirloom gardeners and lists sources for finding the seeds of many old varieties. Because it also provides room for notes, Gardening with Heirloom Seeds can be used year after year and can become an heirloom in its own right--a personal journal to pass along to the next generation of gardeners.

Must have book for gardeners.......2006-08-28
This is a book that should be in everyone's collection. Not only does it tell you what you need to know about heirloom seeds it has some of the most beautiful and real pictures of flowers, fruits and vegetables. The section on where to find seeds is most helpful.
A must have for every home gardener........2006-07-31
Vintage, antique, old-timey. Use your own choice of words to apply to collecting venerable items. Antique automobiles, vintage clothing, and heirloom seeds. All have their unique charm and attraction to certain aficionados.
Numerous authoritative books have been written about antique automobiles and vintage clothing to informally educate the reader in those subjects. Now, I'm pleased to see a book written that performs the same function for home gardeners.
My wife and I prize our ginger, brought from Hawaii in 1960 by her mother. Each fall its incredibly aromatic blooms transform our front entrance into a perfumery envied and enjoyed by all. While the ginger is a bulb rather than a seed, it is heirloom and extremely valuable to us.
Through the years, my wife and I have often stopped at old homesteads and gotten cuttings and seeds from their generous owners. These people, proud of their plants, many times have regaled us with the history of their unique plants.
Even so, I never really thought of documenting the history behind many of these rare finds that I wanted for their color, overall structure, or scent. Indeed, I had never considered many aspects of heirloom seeds, per se, until I read this wonderfully researched and informative book. I am very grateful that Lynn Coulter has taken the time and made the effort to document this information.
Most people today are familiar with Angel Trumpet (moonflower) vine, a night bloomer that is unique in its own right. But we have moonflower shrubs that came many years ago from an old homestead in Stamps, Arkansas. Their history can be traced back generations. It is the importance of these types of seeds that makes Gardening With Heirloom Seeds such a valuable, informative, and interesting book to read.
Knowing the history and availability of heirloom seeds will once again send me to my planning template as I search for just the right location to put `one more gem'. I strongly urge anyone interested in bringing a touch of the past to their modern gardens to get a copy of this book for their use and reference. It is one volume every serious gardener should have.
An heirloom in itself.......2006-07-16
A must for anyone who cherishes the beauty and bounty of a garden. This book is well-written, meticulously researched, and beautifully photographed. The information and wisdom it provides on flower and vegetable varieties handed down through the generations are well worth any gardener's attention.

computer crafting.......2007-08-29
Great images suitable for scrap booking, decoupage, and printing on fabric for insertion into quilts or to embellish clothing.
Good Visual Resource.......2007-02-21
In the tradition of other Dover publications, this book provides artists, designers and craftspeople with high-quality images for use in a multitude of applications. The seed packet images in this book are by and large excellent examples of the popular lithograph illustrations of the time. The layout of the book itself is nothing spectacular and there is no accompanying text, but it's just the vehicle for the images, so none of the bells and whistles are missed. In my opinion, the CD-ROM is the real gem here - it contains all the images from the books in 300 dpi TIFF and JPEG formats and is invaluable for those who want to manipulate the images via graphics programs such as Photoshop. It certainly saves a lot of time that you would otherwise spend scanning the printed images onto the computer.
Overall, this book is a solid addition to any visual resource library.

Not a great investment.......2007-09-14
Book does not have a lot of solid information a gardener can use. Lots of beautiful photos but not enough tips to succeed on creating a garden from seed.
Gardening From Seed The Keys to Success With Flowers and Veg.......2001-08-01
Not too bad. Good for beginner as a general overview but not enough information I was expecting to find.
Martha Knows How to Garden!.......2001-07-11
Gardening from Seed is a very indispensible book about gardening . It covers all aspects of gardening, from flowers to vegetables. I love this book !!!!!
From Seed to Sow, but What Next?.......2000-04-09
The latest installment of the Martha Stewart book collection is, of course, filled with extravagant, glossy pictures, tips from insiders, and suggested retailers from whom to buy certain products which, presumably, Martha uses herself. However, this tiny book leaves something to be desired. First, several terms are introduced in the meat of the book that are never defined in the glossary or elsewhere (e.g. "deadheading"). Second, the instructions stop at the outdoor-planting phase, thus failing to inform readers on how best to prune plants and how to harvest seeds directly from plants for future use. Third, there are a number of typographical errors not usually associated with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. While the plant index toward the back of the guide is useful, as is the section on tips for eradicating garden pests, your best bet is to purchase a more thorough (and, yes, more expensive) book from Burpee or Better Homes and Gardens if you want an in-depth and all-inclusive guide to the world of gardening from seed.
Just the ticket.......2000-03-25
I bought a house in February (my first) and was so excited to plant that I started seeds indoors ... then came: "What do I do now! " This book is helping me grow all kinds of vegetables and flowers indoors first, in anticipation of Spring, Summer, Fall .... thanks, Martha.

Customer Reviews:
Good for someone, not for me........2006-12-06
I purchased this with the hope that I would be able to use the pictures for discussion about apples with the preschoolers that I teach. The illustrations are wonderful but are truly geared toward an early elementary school level science curriculum. A better choice for my age level children was The Season's of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons in which a little boy interacts with a tree throughout the seasons of the year.
How do Apples Grow?.......2000-08-03
Betsy Maestro has done it again! Her book about how apples grow is both informative and fun to read. Students will be captivated by the story and the pictures. This book is a must have for all classrooms!

Dependable quality of narratives and pictures.......2005-10-14
National Geographic Traveler is the best series of its type, and the NGT Thailand book has the same standards of quality as all the others. It provides an excellent mix of written descriptions and beautiful pictures, both of which are helpful in determining whether to include places on your trip itinerary. The only flaw is that the hotel and meal section is not particularly useful.
Glossy and pretty but lacking in substance.......2004-10-28
This book seems to be mostly fluff and pictures. It's all in full color which makes it appealing to the eye, and the pictures and general information about various locations are interesting. However, it's almost useless in planning a trip.
All the hotels and restaurants are listed at the back of the book (separate from the other information about the cities, which in itself is annoying because you have to flip back and forth), and the selection they list seems completely random. For many cities no hotels or restaurants are listed.
National Geographic would do well to cut down on the pretty colors and pictures and expand the actual information provided in this book. As it is now, it is a waste of money. Buy the Lonely Planet guide if you want practical information that will actually help you to plan and enjoy a trip to Thailand.
What an absolute waste of money.......2002-09-08
Buy it for the pictures only. The organization and quality of information in this guidebook is terrible.
The worst travel book I've ever purchased.
A picture is worth 1000 words.......2001-06-03
The National Geographic Traveler travel guide for Thailand is a bit pricey for travel books of this type, but it is well worth the investment. Unlike most travel guides, this one is rich in beautiful photography. The book offers a wealth of information on the history and culture of the country, and it gives detailed information about each tourist site. The section covering hotel accomodations and restaurants is adequate, but there are other travel guides that do a better job in these departments. However, the great number and high quality of the photographs compensate for other shortcomings and tempt you to see it all for yourself.
