GOOD BUT INCOMPLETE COLLECTION.......2005-01-06

I've always loved reading comic strips around Christmastime since it is MY favorite time of the year. In fact, this is the only time of the year that I read some strips as long as they have a Christmas subject. This 160 page collection gathers many, but certainly not all of the Peanuts Christmas strips done by Schulz from the 50's through the 90's. You'll see the gang decorating, having fun, and going through the general stress of Christmas as themes of commercialism are explored as they were in the classic TV special.

Yes, I don't think there are any strips here that have NOT been re-printed in previous collections so if you are a real Peanuts "nut", chances are you've seen these before. But, they've never been presented in a Christmas themed collection before as far as I know so that makes it a nice book to own.

This is definitely not the Hallmark book ... This is a nice collection, but not a great collection. Many strips were dropped from the continuity. At least three strips were printed twice, indicating either the editor was asleep or there was no editor! We can only wait for a collection of full continuity strips, but, until then, this is still a worthwhile purchase for Peanuts fans young and old. If you already have the Hallmark collection, buy this also. If not, forget that edition.

Wonderful Strips, Poor Presentation.......2002-11-04

Any collection of Peanuts strips starts out with five stars, simply for the fact that it's Peanuts. I never fail to smile at Charlie Brown's loveable (and always thwarted) attempts to fit in, Linus's philosophising, and Snoopy's imaginary adventures. However, stars are subtracted for the poor editing of this collection, which seems to have been put together by someone who quickly scanned through every Peanuts strip, pulling out any one that contained the word "Christmas". I didn't so much mind the inclusion of non-holiday related strips, for example, Peppermint Patty handing in a book report in August that was due last Christmas, as I did the incompleteness of several story lines that happened to take place during the holidays. Once the Christmas references stopped, the storylines are cut off in this book, leaving several hanging threads, such as the strips about Snoopy dreading Poochie's visit. Additionally, at least two strips appear twice in this book, giving the impression that it was quickly slapped together to get it into stores in time for the holiday shopping season. What would Linus think?!?

My other gripe is with the packaging. These strips have all been published in other collections, so a real Peanuts enthusiast already has them on the bookshelf. Simply gathering all the Christmas strips together into a high priced hardcover volume doesn't add much to them. It would have been nice to have some commentary on the strips, or perhaps include some stills from "A Charlie Brown Christmas".

Nice story Book for Kids.......2006-08-09

This is written in prose form as opposed to Charles Schulz' comic strip style. Still, children will like it, especially if you read it to them. I read it to myself, and I liked it very much, and I'm no kid. This was purchased originally as a gift, but,instead, I think I'll gift myself with it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book on peanuts. Whenever I feel a bit fed up I just take out one of my peanut books and thats enough to put me back on track.

Just like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Valentine, this illustrated read-along seeks to re-create the popular Peanuts TV show of the same name. This edition also includes a four-song sampler CD from jazz-great Vince Guaraldi's brilliant soundtrack.

With illustrator Paige Braddock aping Charles Schulz's style, A Charlie Brown Christmas retells the Emmy Award-winning program blow-by-blow (with a few omissions), from the ice-skating opening scene to preparations for the school pageant to Charlie Brown's ill-fated Christmas tree rescue. Braddock almost perfectly mimics the show's cast and backdrops, but just as no one could be fooled by even expert impersonation of a loved one, Peanuts fans might find the niggling differences distracting (whether it's Schroeder's too-wavy hair or Pig Pen's just-too-small head).

A "novelization" like this probably can't ever hope to completely recapture the charm of the original, even if it had used Schulz's original art. Although the dialogue has been faithfully reproduced, much of the story's subtle appeal and cultural subtext gets lost in the book's simplified exposition--which is too bad, given that these are precisely the qualities which have made the show (and Schulz's timeless strip) so durable and well-loved in the first place. Charlie Brown is being a xmas grump. For some reason he doesn't get it, at this particular point in time. Luckily, the rest of the Peanuts gang have a bit more of a clue, and then there is the faithful dog Snoopy, to help pull him through the midsummer morass of melancholy he is meandering his mug through.

No Match for the Real Christmas Special.......2003-12-09

Pay attention to the reviews on this book - it is not the real thing and fails to capture the magic of the special you saw on TV as a kid. It does clearly state on the title page that this is adapted from the special. I failed to comprehend what that meant. It means the story is abrigded - incredibly abrigded. Unfortunately at the same time it is also wordy. Nothing along the lines of reading the Peanut comic strips. The drawings also look off. Again nothing like the comic strip. A true adaptation of this special would be appropriate for children and adults. This book may work for kids but if you plan to give it to an adult friend to capture the magic of Christmas(as was my intention) don't bother. Very disappointing.

Uh, it's okay?.......2003-01-09

I thought Mr. Schulz's lawyer said "no" to any depiction of his characters ever to be done by the other artists after his death? As a result, this is a rather pale copy of the original art style and thus it looks a bit weird. So I think I'll go tell the lawyer on Paige Braddock.

I don't know, the book is a bit too wordy to read to a class, but it gives me memories of a wonderful TV special. I like the book for that reason.

Good Grief!, It's Christmas Everyone........2001-12-20

This delightful book successfully adapts the wonderful, classic television special of A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS to the page. The book is filled with many pictures from the special and most of the televised story remains intact in written form (about the only thing missing is Snoopy winning the decoration competition). The words and text to "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing" are even printed on the inside back cover. Children of all ages love this book and it is sure to be a family holiday favorite to read every year.

Very cute Christmas story.......2005-12-28

The previous review must be for something else - Rerun doesn't throw his shoes in this story. Sounds like she's got it confused with a video. Just thought that needed clarification.

Anyway, in this episode, Rerun is introduced into the gang as Linus and Lucy's baby brother who desperately wants a dog for Christmas. However, his mother thinks that dogs are too much trouble and doesn't want one. Lucy says the same thing. So, Rerun goes over to Charlie Brown's house and asks if his dog could come out for basketball. Snoopy dashes out of the house, shoots a couple of baskets, passes it to Rerun then goes back in. When Rerun asks if he will come out to just play with cookies as a reward, Snoopy obliges and plays all day with him. Rerun has an idea when Snoopy gets a letter from his brother Spike - have Spike come to visit and be his dog. Spike comes and has a great time with Rerun, Linus and Lucy. Lucy acts as nurse when she decides that Spike is just too thin and needs to be fed milkshakes. Afterwards, they play all day and have a glorious time - Spike even brings a cactus with him as a reminder of his home. However, once again, Rerun's mother says that Spike cannot stay so off Spike goes to the desert to live once again. In order to take Rerun's mind off of the dog, Lucy has signed him up for a part in the Christmas play. He remembers his line, which talks about the real meaning of Christmas, and thus Rerun learns that it isn't about what you do or do not get for Christmas - it is about the birth of the Christ child. After that, Rerun realizes what the meaning of the season is and is quite happy.

This book has been a great hit in our house and is read nightly. I highly recommend this one!

WORST Peanuts ever! .......2005-04-02

The original Charles Schulz would roll over in his grave if he saw how they have butchered his beloved "Peanuts" gang. This was painful to watch and, more importantly, it teaches children bad lessons, i.e. when rerun throws his shoe at a dog and calls him a stupid dog, which he admits that he is "running out of shoes" (because he does this all the time), when they just leave Spike on the side of the road when they decide they don't want him anymore...there were so many more incidents like these and these are certainly not things we want to teach to children. The plot, or lack thereof, and poor dialogue is also confusing to children...and adults alike. Please spend your money elsewhere.

Cute Peanuts Holiday Story.......2004-10-13

Christmas is here, and Lucy and Linus's younger brother Rerun wants nothing more than a dog of his own for the holiday. One who will play with him, and keep him company when there's no one else around. Rerun knows that he can't have Snoopy. After all, Snoopy is Charlie Brown's dog. So he asks Snoopy's brother Spike to stay with him. Rerun is having a fantastic time with Spike, until his Mother, who thinks dogs are too dirty, tells Spike to go back home to the desert. Now Rerun just knows that his Christmas is over. After all, Christmas is boring if you don't get the present that you truly want.

Charles M. Schulz has done an amazing job with I WANT A DOG FOR CHRISTMAS, CHARLIE BROWN! for he has incorporated Rerun into the Peanuts gang, a character who has not been seen in past comic strips. The story is sweet, and teaches about the true meaning of Christmas, while the illustrations are wonderful, and show the Peanuts gang doing all kinds of fun things in celebration of Christmas. Overall this is a wonderful new holiday story to add to the Peanuts collection that will be loved by children, as well as their parents who will remember Charlie Brown from when they were children.

Pretty much the same as the special,(except for the Pawpet Show),
Charlie Brown waits for valentines with pie in the sky hopes. Snoopy makes a music box out of paper, while Sally makes a diamond and a club, and Charlie Brown watches his "something that is very nice" fall apart.
