Book Description
For sixty years the best food writers have been sending dispatches from Paris to Gourmet. At once unique and universal, these essays by Joseph Wechsberg, Naomi Barry, and Diane Johnson, among others, present tantalizing glimpses of culinary life in the world capital of love and food.
From unforgettable vignettes of resourceful chefs feeding hungry Parisians after World War II to the birth and rise of nouvelle cuisine–it’s all here: the old-time bourgeois dinners, the tastemakers, the hero-chefs, and, of course, Paris in all its charm, arrogance, and splendid refinement.

Reading and Remembering Why I'm an Armchair Traveler.......2005-08-21
What a great opportunity to learn more about the Paris I love, and French food which I do not prepare at home. I wait for my trips. I am not intimidated with the snooty waiters, as I did my "homework." I'm prepared to ask questions about loaves and wine and anything else. The set-up of the chapters was easy reading, too. I trusted the writers. I discovered more secrets in Paris via their investigations and risky ventures. I didn't have to suffer the frustrations of getting lost on the metro nor the pains of tusseling with those Parisian cabbies. I especially enjoyed the trips to the new and modern Paris as described by Paul Goldberger. Do you want to loaf with a loaf, drink a bottle away from the bottlenecks? Read this book. Also, I will read other books in the Modern Library Food series based on my enjoyment of Ruth Reichl choices.

An essential history of the May 1968 upheaval in France-and how it changed the world. Prelude to Revolution is the indispensable study of May 1968. Generations have looked to this book for inspiration. Singer, who died in 2000, was widely considered the most adept interpreter of European politics for American audiences. He shows here how change happens-and why it is needed

I am not sure I believe it.......2004-12-27
If I was judging this book only on the merits of the literary quality than it would be unfair to give it anything other than 5 stars. Though this book is one hell of an eye-witness to the waves of student revolts and strikes in Paris and all throughout France in 1968, Singer's thesis does not ring true to me.
According to Singer, when the France's industry ground to a halt as workers when into the streets in 1968, there was a chance for a workers revolution that would have made the October Revolution irrelevant for revolutionaries as a model of how to come to power. This was the General Strike that both Rosa Luxemburg, Leon Trotsky, and the wobblies thought would lead to the death knell of capitalism, and the beginning of a truly brave new world for all workers involved. The workers of one nation were united and smashing their chains outside the gates of the factories.
Reading Singer's description of how the extremely Stalinist Parti Communist Francais turned what could have been a renegotiation of workers place in French society into a fight solely over higher wages and slightly better conditions is enough to make any socialist or labor activist tear his or her hair out. As Singer describes the post strike wave flag waving hyper-patriotism of PCF frustration turns into out and out fury. The Communists are worse than fools--by completely betraying their founding principles they proved themselves to be cowards in the face of their own constituency.
Though I agree with Singer that the PCF as an organization acted with ridiculous short-sightedness during the strikes, it is difficult to swallow that a workers' revolution was just barely averted because of the Communists negotiating a deals which essentially bought off or bewildered the workers in the streets. There is precious little evidence that Singer produces to substantiate his claim that revolution had occurred. Singer is not able to show why exactly the workers were in the streets, and he seems a little to quick to attribute the creation of some workers councils to being the beginnings of (counter) government institutions. If this had been the case, even the Communists would have been smart enough to see it.
This is a major fault with the book, but it is still a fine read and one of the best eye witness accounts of a revolt that I have ever come across. The drama, the wackiness, and all the hope of a huge number of men in women in motion is absolutely breath taking and well worth the irritation of not seeing a thesis proved that I desperately would like to be true.
This is still very much worth the time to read though.

Book Description
Historical events are never identical, but the study of them does provide a context within which to formulate meaningful questions to order and guide decision making. And that is the purpose of our Military History Series -- not to provide blueprints for future action, but, rather, historical benchmarks to assist in forming creative responses to the ever-changing global challenges to US interests and security. An especially informative historical period took place during the last days of the US military withdrawal from Vietnam. On 23 January 1973, the President announced to the Nation that the United States and North Vietnam had reached agreement in Paris on "ending the war and restoring peace" in Vietnam. The accord provided for a Four-Party Joint Military Commission, composed of military representatives from North Vietnam, South Vietnam, the Viet Cong, and the United States, to implement certain provisions of the accord. This National Defense University military history records the experiences of the US soldiers on the US Delegation during the 60-day life of the Commission. The author, Lieutenant Colonel Walter S. Dillard, USA, was the official historian of the US Delegation and is thus uniquely qualified to write of the events marking the last days of our military presence in Vietnam. The author's analyses of these events should be instructive for those who would better understand the enigmas of US relations with the developing world; for our military who would better understand the functions of and constraints on such delegations; and for students of statecraft who would better understand the interplay between treaty-making and desired outcomes. John S. Pustay Lieutenant General, United States Army President, National Defense University

Customer Reviews:
Unexpected, and Highly Enjoyable for All Fans of Fantasy Art.......2007-08-07
I've always been impressed with the high quality of the artwork in my D&D books - especially with the new generation of artists, like Wayne Reynolds and Todd Lockwood. The Art of Dragon Magazine holds to that standard.
A nice retrospective of 30 years of Dragon magazine cover and interior art, The Art of Dragon Magazine includes work from Larry Elmore, Clyde Caldwell, Brom, and many others, chronicling not only how D&D fantasy artwork has ebbed and flowed over the years, but how tastes and interpretations of classic characters have changed. Also, this book is chock-full of art. Neatly separated into broad categories (such as "magic" and "dragons") you'll find artistic interpretations of daring rogues, fiendish liches, gruff dwarves, and many other characters and settings that will fire your imagination. All of the art is well reproduced and clear - not blurry, and the book is put together well.
There are only two items that I feel keep this book from getting a five-star rating: first, it is too brief; while there is a large selection of art, one can't help but feel there are more gems out there (I hope a second collection is in the works!). Second, some of my favorite artists (most notably Todd Lockwood) are not as well-represented as I might have liked. Overall, however, fans of D&D, as well as fantasy art enthusiasts in general (including those who enjoy the annual Spectrum collections) will be pleased to add this to their libraries.
Good, but could be better........2007-05-06
While many of the picures within are visually stunning, I felt they left out some of the best artwork in favor of some rather crude ones. All in all I'd say I liked about 30% of the artwork in the book, and I wish the other 70% could have been exchanged for better works I've seen in past issues of Dragon. Maybe there will be a volume 2.
Dragon Magazine.......2007-03-12
I bought this as a gift and my wife was very pleased. She was a avid reader of Dragon magazine and loved the art!
Book Description
He's been one of the fantasy art masters for over 20 years, creating brilliant visions of mystic wonder. Clyde Caldwell breathes life into all his creations, from the sword-wielding warrior to the fearsome winged dragon he's trying to kill. What Clyde is best known and loved for however, is his women! Sultry and powerful, supple yet steely, these are fearsome females who are as alluring as they are awesome! Here's a stunning collection of Caldwell's works, spanning an entire career. A full color gallery, The Art of Clyde Caldwell does an excellent job showing off this artist's finest images
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2006-07-03
Since the 1980s, Clyde Caldwell's artwork has been used for books, games and so on. His artwork, dealing with everything from horror, fantasy and sci-fi, is one of the best. The focus seems to be on sexy, lovely ladies and it's even better when you realize he uses real models! A must for any library about art books or fantasy books.
THE PREMIERE FANTASY ARTIST!.......2005-10-27
To fans of fantasy role-playing games and fantasy novels, Clyde Caldwell isn't just an artist, he is THE artist! For nearly 30 year's Caldwell's art has been featuring on gaming products, book covers, calendars and more. Caldwell has been the premiere artist for years for TSR/Wizards of the Coast's line of Dungeons & Dragons products. His work has been featured on countless book covers for publishers such as Avon, Baen, Ace, and Zebra and he's provided covers for publications such as Heavy Metal, Dragon, Dungeon, and Epic Illustrated. When it comes to pure fantasy art, it just doesn't get any better than Clyde Caldwell.
SQP presents this over-sized book with 128 pages of Caldwell's outstanding fantasy paintings from over the past 25 years, all in full color and printed on heavy stock, suitable for fans and collectors alike. Long-time gaming fans or fantasy fiction fans will recognize many of the pieces in this collection from some of their favorite books and modules over the years. A comprehensive index in the back lists the title of each painting and the medium in which he worked to complete each piece.
While not necessarily known for his nudes, the book provides several examples done in Acrylic wash from the Savage Hearts portfolio, also for SQP. Pages 20 & 21 feature one of my all-time favorite Caldwell paintings, the darkly gothic castle of Ravenloft with the vampire Count Strahd standing in full regalia on a balcony looking out over his lands. A thoroughly dynamic painting!
"From the Shadows" features a pair of dungeon adventurers fighting off a trio of spectral skeletons. This painting was from a Ravenloft module. Pages 72 & 73 feature two more paintings of the sinister Count Strahd, as they perfectly capture that mist-shrouded, gothic look of old Universal Horror films.
The Caldwell woman always evokes a sense of power and this is demonstrated beautifully in the painting called "Leopard and the Serpent" showing a warrior maiden posing proudly wearing a leopard headdress. Then there is "Amara Wintersword" sitting entrenched in a malignant looking old tree, dressed in red cloak and scantily placed chain mail. "Midnight Snack" and "To Pick a Rose You Ask Your Hands to Bleed" are two wonderful paintings of female vampires, decidedly different in their eras, but both equally foreboding. The latter piece coming from the Vampire: The Masquerade Player's Handbook for White Wolf.
Another of my favorite paintings is "Fiddler Fair" as a female bard plays her fiddle while the grim reaper hovers behind her. This was from a cover to a Mercedes Lackey book for Baen. "Forbidden Embrace" is also a great piece. A raven haired enchantress embraces a foul, tentacled creature that looks like it just walked out of a Lovecraft story. This was from a cover to Inquest Gamer magazine.
I say "favorites" in only the loosest sense of the word as it's literally impossible to pick a favorite from Caldwell's distinguished body of work. He truly is the gold standard when if comes to fantasy artists.

Book Description
Admiring a Caldwell painting is like peering through a portal to an alternate dimension; you can actually see the fantastic come to life in vivid detail. His creatures glisten in otherworldly sunlight, savagely ferocious and fully realized in every way. As for Caldwell's women - they exude both an exotic beauty and an inner authority that sets them apart from the average bimbo warriors of lesser artists. His visions are at once unique and familiar, as if the incredible were an every day occurrence, and Clyde just happen to be there to capture it on canvas. Volume Two also contains a magnificent full color section which showcases Caldwell's unparalleled paintings.
