        Book Description

Plant cell culture techniques are used increasingly in basic research for plant exploitation in industry, including for example, genetic engineering and micropropagation. The rapidly developing role of plant cell culture has necessitated this new edition of a widely acclaimed book. It covers a
wide range of methods central to the exploitation of plant cell cultures in fundamental and applied research. This thoroughly revised work retains the combination of giving and explaining the general principles involved with the concise description of specific protocols, with appeal to a broad
readership, that made the first edition so successful. Internationally recognized experts describe the techniques used for isolating and manipulating cell cultures, and the central importance in plant biotechnology. The book will be of major interest to researchers in plant sciences in general, and
specifically to botany, plant physiology, and biotechnology students.

          Book Description

These proceedings continue the series edited in the framework of the traditional triennial International Conference on Electrical Bio-Impedance (ICEBI), the most important platform for presenting recent scientific achievements in the area of electrical bio-impedance. The XIII ICEBI was held from Aug. 29th – Sept. 02nd 2007 at the Graz University of Technology in Graz, Austria. As already in previous years the 13th ICEBI was held together with the 8th Conference on Electrical Impedance Tomography, the annual meeting for biomedical impedance imaging. Consequently, the proceedings also contain many contributions from this very important and challenging branch of bioimpedance research.

When compared to previous ICEBIs we notice a slight reduction of publications dedicated to purely theoretical models of bioimpedance phenomena while there was a significant increase of presentations on non-contacting and multimodal imaging technologies, cellular applications and specific biomedical applications. Among the latter pulmonary monitoring, multi-segmental BIA and cellular applications should be especially mentioned as obviously being in the transition from basic research to clinical usefulness.

The growth of interest for bioimpedance research is also reflected by two additional facts, namely the foundation of the International Society for Electrical Bio-Impedance (ISEBI) at the preceding conference 2004 in Gdansk and the kind endorsement of the 13th ICEBI by the IFMBE and its offer to publish scientific papers in the series of IFMBE proceedings.

              Book Description

Applications of Plant Cell and Tissue Culture Chairman: Y. Yamada 1988 Interest in all aspects of plant cell and tissue culture is expanding rapidly as the technologies available improve and the commercial potential of these processes becomes apparent. This book covers basic plant physiology and cytology and extends to the practical exploitation of plants, both as crops per se and as sources of useful compounds produced as secondary metabolites. The reduction of plants to single cells or tissues that can be maintained in culture facilitates their manipulation by the techniques of molecular biology. Genes encoding desirable traits, for example herbicide or pathogan resistance or early flowering, can be introduced into domesticated crops by transformation of normal plant cells using a natural vector such as Agrobacterium, by the uptake of DNA into protoplasts using techniques developed for animal cells, or by direct injection of DNA into intact cells with cell walls. Application of these technologies to forest trees is especially important because the long lifespan of these species makes their improvement by conventional breeding programmes very slow. Problems of commercial exploitation considered include the storage of genetically engineered material until progeny evaluation has been completed, the stability of traits in culture, and the feasibility of adapting laboratory methods to large-scale production plants. There is also some discussion of the sociolegal aspects of genetic engineering of crop plants, and of the difficulties of marketing `natural' compounds produced by cells under artificial conditions. 2 out of 5 stars NOT SO IMPRESSED.......2003-05-22

My husband and I recently took a trip to Brussels, for the first time. We "thought" this book would be a great guide for us in a foreign country... but instead found ourselves getting lost. The map is huge, you'll need to find a coffee shop to actually sit and open the darn thing, and the sites aren't addressed clearly. A bit of advice, there are huge maps on the corners of most major streets that tell where you are and how to get to a site; use the undergrounds, much cheaper and easier to get around; and ask your hotel conceirge for directions, they know everything...oh, and make sure you brush up on your French, some village sandwich shops aren't as nice as your regular star bucks :)

                        4 out of 5 stars A Great Day Trip.......2001-05-08

I bought this guide for a day trip into Brussels, during a recent European vacation. I found the guide to be extremely helpful in planning my one day visit. It focuses on the "Top Sites" to be visited in each city, and has plenty of interesting historical information, as well as practical information on hours of operation, and local transport. The shopping recommendations offered by the guide are also excellent. The only disappointing item about this guide was the one map, which is on very thin paper, and which was quite unwieldy. A better choice would be smaller maps scattered throughout the book. While I recommend this book for a day trip, it would not be suitable for a longer stay. I look forward to using this guide again when I visit Bruges in the future.

This booklet is a concise summary of important places to visit. It is not intended as a detailed book, but rather as the actual information you'll be holding in your pocket while doing your sightseeing. For planning ahead in detail, I recommend go to the internet.

                        4 out of 5 stars 5-star map; 3-star book........1999-12-09

The map which comes with this book is nearly perfect - it has all the tram and bus lines except the ones changed since '98 (very little changes) and it is more accurate, more detailed, and includes more of the city than the maps available in the VVV (tourist information) in Amsterdam. I spent the summer in Amsterdam and this map was indispensable, especially since I was not living in the city center and my apartment was located off most maps.

The book, on the other hand, is great for listing ideas of things to see and do, but does not actually 'review' anything - the author basically seems to think _everything_ in Amsterdam is absolutely wonderful and worth seeing. This is a terrific attitude if you are there for a long time, but if you are planning a short visit, try to read one of the more critical books as well so you won't waste your time and miss the best things. Also, the book has not been updated recently, so several of the restaurants (vegetarian ones mostly) are no longer open (but, to be fair, I could not find _any_ guidebooks for Amsterdam in which all the vegetarian restaurants were still in business, including a pamphlet published only a few months before, since several had just gone under.)

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Map.......1998-10-01

The map is excellent, very detailed, down to every street. And it's easy to read. The guide is brief, but helpful. Gives most of the essential information, all the museums and major attractions. We decided to order a second copy, in case our party wants to split up!

4 out of 5 stars An excellent, pocket-size guide to a great city........1998-09-17

Citypack Venice contains almost all the information you will need to make the most of your stay in this beautiful city. Of course, the top 25 sights are spot-on, but we found the practical infomation sections almost as useful. The recommendations for restaurants were excellent, both in the budget and expensive range, and the fold-away map was invaluable. The only improvement we could suggest would be a map with some of the further away islands included. The author recommends these trips but doesn't include a map to show where you're going!

Overall, an excellent book and well worth buying.

I was disappointed with this guidebook- it was poorly laid out and skimmed over areas. Basic information and historical notes were okay. I mainly used the guidebook in Amsterdam, and found it too bulky and time-consuming to use efficiently. If you are going to Amsterdam, I would recommend Lonely Planet's Best of Amsterdam (see my other review). This guidebook was simply okay. While it was accurate, I would suggest looking for another book.

3 out of 5 stars Florence City Pack.......2000-06-13

The Florence City Pack did a great job of giving the top 25 sites to visit in Florence. The picutres were good as were the highlights of each cite. We also found the general city information to be helpful, for example, public restrooms and getting around.

Unfortunately, we found the hours of operation for each site were extremely unreliable, causing us to miss museums and try to build them into our schedule the next day. It seemed that this was the norm for most of the sites they listed. We ended up calling the places to get the visiting hours.

Overall, the book was helpful and easy to carry around because it fits into a pocket. The map was up to date and came in handy. I would reccommend the book as quick reference, but suggest getting a more comprehensive guide for detailed descriptions of the region and sites.
