Book Description
In Notes For Friends, world-renowned photographer Robert Adams explores the possibility of discovering beauty in the compromised landscape of the new American West. His photographs, rendering the landscape in rich black-and-white images, clearly demonstrate that beauty can be found, suggesting a new kind of exploration that could yield a transforming discovery--the basis for a love of home. Pictures in the book reacquaint us with places that we may have lost to habit or prejudice. Robert Adams encourages us to walk minor roads that at first appear inconsequential, but that in fact lead to wonder. Light rains its miracle on fields next to suburban developments, across the slopes of nameless foothills, and onto trees next to expressways.
For his work Adams was given fellowships by the Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations, and was awarded the Spectrum International Prize for Photography. Charles Hagen, writing in The New York Times, has observed that "Mr. Adams has over the last two decades helped transform landscape photography in the United States." He has made a name for himself photographing that which was being lost in the name of progress, and in Notes for Friends Robert Adams looks back at the landscape of his beloved Colorado and tries to find what is left to be gained.
Robert Adams is a native of Longmont, Colorado, and one of this country's premier photographers. He is the author of Architecture and Art in Early Hispanic Colorado (UPC), Listening to the River: Seasons in the American West, To Make It Home: Photographs of the American West, Denver: A Photographic Survey of the Metropolitan Area, White Churches of the Plains, and many others. He currently resides in Oregon.
Customer Reviews:
disappointed.......2003-10-07
Given the raving reviews I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book after waiting for it for over a month! It took me less than 5 minutes to leaf through it - what a disappointment. Expecting outstanding photographs, they are mediocre, bland, uninteresting subjects. What are the subjects? Hoping to find breakthroughs in lighting, subject treatment or composition, I wonder why certain areas are overexposed and bothersome to look at in the photographs. Nothing stands out as innovative. I'm amazed people praise him as being so much better than Ansel Adams. It is undeniable that Ansel Adams' work is more esthetic, dramatic, fascinating and of a quality far beyond this. I'm sending it back.
I love it but yes I'm biased.......2002-08-08
Just this day received my newest purchase, by Robert Adams, wonderful dreamy and poetic, yet gritty and real.
Someone paid me the best compliment ever recently when they compared my own art to Mr Adams'
This book will take a proud spot beside my bed for the next few weeks it will be a joy to fall asleep with it in my hands dreaming of the impending spring and summer light that is soon to reach us here in the southern hemisphere.
I must admit I was pleaently surprised to see that it was almost exclusively images, I was expecting another collection of essays similar to his recent book "Why People Photograph"
Crikey I'm not complaining
Adams vs Adams.......2002-07-06
I couldn't agree more with the previous review. If I see another (Ansel) Adams calendar on a wine-bar wall, I think I may just throw up. That stuff just feels like chocolate box kitsch to me now, whereas (Robert) Adams is at least trying to show us exactly what he actually sees, rather than a stage managed image of 'natural' perfection, and so to me at least, he feels more genuine and far less smug than his more famous namesake. But hey, I love this book, and this photgrapher, so I'm probably a tad biased.
Robert Adams' Landscape Photography.......2000-01-29
Robert Adams' latest book of landscape photographs - "Notes for Friends" - continues to challenge our views of what a landscape photograph can and should be. Beware though, not only are Robert Adams and Ansel Adams not related, neither are their photographs. I believe Robert Adams is responding to a reality that was only beginning to be recognized when Ansel Adams was producing his greatest works during the 30's and 40's. As a result, Robert Adams' pictures are not the glorious large format views of wilderness once synonomous with our concept of 'nature'.
Most of these pictures were taken at the boundry of commercial farmland and encroaching urban sprawl. If you think about it for a while, what else is there? Does it really make sense for any photographer to plant his tripod in the same spot as the previous dozen have done in order to photograph the same 0.1% of our land reasonably preserved as wilderness? Isn't the seemingly endless succession of photographs of pristine beaches, glowing aspens and towering clouds over unspoiled mountains a deception if not an outright lie? Does anyone in 21st century America still think this is 'nature'?
But, what if a perceptive photographer who truly cares about all this were to just go out a few miles from home and walk about with a 35mm camera any of us could afford to own? What if his goal were to find whatever beauty may still exist and, perhaps, some reason to be hopeful for the future? What would result? I believe the result would be photographs just like the ones Robert Adams has given us in "Notes for Friends". For those who can cope with what we have done to our natual heritage, it's a wonderful book of pictures. For others seeking refuge in the past, it will invariably disappoint.

Rabbit Ears Treasury of Fairy Tales.......2007-05-10
When our children were little, every Friday evening on NPR radio, Rabbit Ears would share these treasures. The stories are excellent with movie stars reading the story and famous musicians doing the music. It is exciting to have these now on cd's! I love the Talking Eggs!
Just what I was looking for.......2006-09-27
My 3.5 year old son is ready to give up nap, but I wasn't ready to give up my afternoon quiet time. This was the perfect solution. I put one of these CDs in and he lays down and listens. There is nice music throughout and the storytellers all have very pleasant voices. There are 2 CDs in this set, each with over an hour of storytelling. He likes them so much that he frequently gets up after the first CD is over and asks for the other one, so I get 2 hours of quiet and he gets the rest he still needs to get through his day. I will definitely be getting the other CDs in this series.

Book Description
he story of the little girl so named because of her tiny size is one of the most popular and enduring fairy tales of all time. Children can identify with the plucky heroine who uses cleverness instead of size and strength to make her own way in the wide, wide world. Lauren Mills's delicate watercolors create a miniature land where a walnut shell covered with violet petals serves as a bed, a leaf becomes a suitable umbrella, and field mice and birds are Thumbelina's unlikely companions. Enchanting details drawn from nature bring this imaginative story to life.

Book Description
It's not easy being small, but in Brad Sneed's lovely new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina, at least life is full of adventure. Soon after being born from a fiery red flower, Thumbelina is kidnapped from home and pursued by many suitors, including a horrible toad, a bumbling beetle, and a grumpy mole--until the plucky heroine finds a true love who fits her just right.
Sneed's rich, detailed watercolors are a true standout, illustrating the animals and natural world with remarkable realism and vibrancy. The story, lighthearted and lively, has a simple text that keeps the elegant flavor of the original tale, yet is perfect for a picture book audience.
Brad Sneed's fresh look at a well-loved fairy tale is simply sumptuous!
Customer Reviews:
Charming story, lovely images lend to happy toddler!.......2007-09-21
My daughter loves this story, and regularly clamors to hear it over and over again. The only downside (for me, not for her) is that it is "long" as far as stories go that you have to read over and over again. That said, it is a great book for 2 - 3 year olds who are beginning to exercise their imaginations. My daughter is constantly looking inside flowers to see if Thumbelina is there, and she loves talking about the toad and the beatles and the mole. Each little animal in "Thumbelina" comes with their own history and story, rich enough for a child to grasp onto and weave into their imagination and pretend play. Definitely a great 3 year old bday gift!
Great Illustrations that My daughter loves.......2006-01-23
My daughter (5 years) loves this book. We actually got it from the library and have been enjoying it for a month and are ready to renew it as she cannot part with it. She loves to hear the story read aloud to her, and the language is well chosen for an oft told tale; but she also delights in the illustrations and really sits and studies them in a way I've only see her do with a few books. The pictures seem to invite her to look longer and to linger, which gets her imagination working! Beautiful!

Book Description
Once upon a time there was a woman who was sad because she had no children. One day she planted a magic seed and from the seed grew a flower. Inside the flower was a tiny, exquisite girl no bigger than the woman's thumb. Her name was Thumbelina.
The two lived happily together until an ugly old toad snuck in and snatched Thumbelina away. So began Thumbelina's adventures in a world full of dangers for little people. Luckily, size isn't all that matters, and Thumbelina's kindness and courage bring her long-lasting happiness.
Customer Reviews:
A book about a small person doing extrodinary things........2001-12-16
Thumbelina is not normal girl she is about the size of your thumb, but don't let her height mistake you she can do alot of things other people can't do. Like she can fit into small spaces that you can't. So if you like books that are about people doing extremely different things that you don't think that can do then this is the book right for you to read. This book will amaze your eyes with the colorful pictures inside, and with the amazing things Thumbelina can do.
A Beautiful Little Tale.......2001-12-09
Hans Christian Andersen's story of Thumbeline is so endearing that it's no wonder that so many authors have written their own versions of it and so many illustrators have had a go at making tiny Thumbeline come to life. This version, translated by Anthea Bell and illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger is brimming with charm, rustic folk sensibilities, kindness and compassion spiked with just the right amount of perilous adventure to make it interesting, and a lovely magical feel. The story is well told in satisfyingly descriptive language. The illustrations are superb! Zwerger does a wonderful job with all of the animal characters that Thumbeline encounters and manages to infuse them with emotion and intelligence as well as country charm. Little red-haired Thumbeline is delicate and sweet in several lovely costumes with a peasant feel to them. You know the tale...a woman tells a witch that she wants a "tiny child" and the magic gives her exactly what she wishes for, a tiny child no bigger than her thumb. Thumbeline is born from the heart of a tulip. She's so beautiful and sweet that every small suitor in the neighborhood wants her hand in marriage, including a toad, a mole and a June beetle. They are not interested in the fact that she does not want to marry them! She gets help from other wee folk in the woodland community and makes a good friend when she saves the life of a swallow. The story ends happily for Thumbeline. It may be desirable to point out to your young ones that not every unattached female needs to find a husband, especially very young ones like Thumbeline, and that kidnapping and force are not true ways to get a girl to marry you! Children are smart enough to know that but it's still a good idea to talk over the odd concepts that a child may be thinking about after you read this story. I love this old-fashioned story and this re-telling adds beautifully to its charm and therefore justifies its conception.
A Little Gem.......2001-11-29
The familiar Hans Christian Andersen story of Thumbelina has received the royal treatment from Susan Jeffers. Her large, lovely pictures make this seem like you are stepping into the story for the first time. Thumbelina is so dainty and sweet that it's no wonder the toad wishes to marry her but poor Thumbelina has a harrowing time escaping from her warty suitor. Share a trumpet vine blossom with Thumbelina, a pair of hummingbirds and a fat bumble bee or take a ride with her on the back of a gallant swallow. This whole story is enchanting from start to finish and the pictures are a delight!
Superb illustrations radiate beauty and grace.......1999-04-24
Artist Arlene Graston has created for THUMBELINA breathtakingly beautiful illustrations full of gentle elegance and poignant sensitivity. The first illustration depicting the birth of Thumbelina within the petals of a flower, positively glows with radiance. Each succeeding painting makes the venerable fairy tale come alive with a new freshness and beauty. Graston's exquisite detail and gorgeous use of color, coupled with her magical vision, majestically complements the text. This book is a favorite of my youngest child. We have read and reread it many times, happily carried away by its charm and magic. I whole- heartedly recomend this lovely book for everyone, for your children and for the child within us all. I am grateful to Ms. Graston for creating a work which connects us with the healing and transporting joy of beauty.
One of the most beautiful children's books I've seen.......1997-12-20
I had to write this after reading the bizarre review from Kirkus that Amazon posted. I bought the book after it got a starred review in Publisher's Week and was absolutely bowled over. Arlene Graston paints with the kind of enchantment, mastery, and love as the great turn-of-the-century illustrators. Every parent should consider buying this book for their children to show them what beauty is all about.

Book Description
Join tiny Thumbelina on her magical journey from lost child to beloved bride in this glorious large-format picture book. Born in a flower, Thumbelina braves the enormous, dangerous world until, through her kindness and courage, she is delivered to a kingdom of people just her size. When Susan Jeffers's original version was first published in 1979, School Library Journal called it in a starred review "a remarkable, lovely version of one of the author's most beloved tales." New jacket art, recolored and newly rendered interior art, and gold foil borders all add to the value and elegance of this reissue.
