5 out of 5 stars RI Master Gardener Advanced Education.......2007-10-17

As the RI Master Gardener Advanced Education Coordinator, I have used this book for two years in workshops delivered to our membership. The "Locator Key" and identification system is easy to use (easier than using the weed identification systems) and the drawings and descriptions are clear. Would recommend to anyone interested in identifying wildflowers or "weeds."

5 out of 5 stars Best Wildflower Guide I Know.......2007-08-14

Because the keys are based on number of petals, this is the easiest identification guide I have. I take it into the field along with the Peterson's guide, which has better illustrations, and cross-check my flowers.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2007-06-11

In the past, I found field guides to wildflowers very frustrating. I have both A Field Guide to Wildflowers : Northeastern and North-Central North America (Peterson Field Guides)and a Golden Wildflower guide. Because the aforementioned are organized by color first, one has to painstakingly search though all of the illustrations until a probable match is found. This is time consuming, and for me, very difficult, leading to many misidentifications.

Newcomb's Wildflower guide takes a different approach. Created for the non botanist, it begins with flower shape, then leaf location, then leaf shape, until you have a 3 digit numeric key. Next by looking under this key for more detail, you are directed to the right page(s). For me this is wonderful, it takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you find the correct illustration and description quickly without having to page though a multitude of pink or blue or white, etc. flowers.

Admittedly, this system is not for everyone. Many people may like starting with color, but for me this guide is truly useful in the field.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide for beginners and advanced.......2007-05-23

Overall a great book if you are interested in wildflower identification. I wish there were more pictures. Once you learn the coding, it is easy to narrow what you are looking for. I tried identifying a a flower that I already new by using the coding and was able to go directly to it. Using it to identify others you don't know takes a little practice, but it cuts your search time way down.

5 out of 5 stars A Staple for Every Fan of Plants.......2007-03-08

This book is the first to go into a field bag when headed outside. It is an invaluable resource. A great deal of drawings (mostly B/W) that aid in the identification of Northeastern wildflowers. Note: requires a moderate amount of practice and/or knowledge of plants and flowers to be truly effective.

    Book Description

"Combines all the best features of an easy-to-use field guide with the most recent information available on the taxonomy, distribution, and conservation of wild orchids. The regional nature of this guide assures that the flowering dates and habitats listed are accurate for the Northeast, providing the reader with maximum assistance to find and enjoy orchids in the wild."--William Kent Chapman, author, Orchids of the Northeast: A Field Guide

"The author has created a guide that will expand the world of orchids to the hobbyist, student, naturalist, and researcher alike."--John Carmody, VMD, outdoor activity guide and orchid hobbyist

In a complete revision and expansion of his previous work on the subject, Paul Martin Brown incorporates 10 years of additional research and fieldwork in this expanded guide to the wild orchids in the entire Northeast. Now including all of Pennsylvania and New Jersey (a state never before covered in its entirety), the guide spans the region from the southern Pennsylvania border to the northern tip of Maine, and includes features on areas of special interest: the Northwoods (bog, fen, and boreal forest), the Connecticut River Valley, central New York State, metropolitan Boston, Cape Cod and eastern Long Island, the New Jersey pinelands and Cape May, and the Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Enhancing the text are 300+ photos illustrating the orchids and color forms and hybrids (several previously unpublished), 79 color distribution maps, along with regional orchid hunting maps, additional drawings, and original paintings by Stan Folsom. The guide covers 79 species and varieties, 88 forms, and 15 hybrids and provides full treatment of synonymy and species pairs. More experienced enthusiasts will appreciate this treatment of potentially confusing specimens and will find that the literature review provides a valuable resource to anyone interested in orchid taxonomy. The guide also provides quick access to locally useful information via state-by-state species checklists, species rarity and conservation information, regional flowering time charts, a hunting guide that divides the Northeast into regional habitats and hot spots, and a special tribute to the late Philip E. Keenan.

Combining the attractive and useful tools of a field guide with additional features for serious researchers, writers, and taxonomists, this is the ideal companion for casual hikers and dedicated orchid hunters alike--a handy, authoritative guide for the northeastern states.

    Book Description

Many of us have stopped to pick bunches of wildflowers or have admired them as they flourished in fields, hiking trails, and roads. Always appreciated but not always recognized, now these beauties can easily be identified with Wildflowers in the Field and Forest, the most inclusive field guide available to the wildflowers of the northeastern United States. Designed for easy use, the book features two-page spreads with descriptive text and range maps on one side facing pages of color photos on the other. The descriptions are concise, but thorough, and the range maps show both where the plant grows and what time of year it is likely to be in bloom. Plants are grouped by flower color, usually the feature first noticed by the observer. The species are subsequently grouped by petal arrangement, type of leaves, and number of flower parts as indicated in the "quick characters" box at the top of each page. There is also a simple key in the beginning of the book that allows one to quickly narrow the search to a few pages. In addition to the more common and conspicuous wildflowers, many of the lesser known, and often overlooked, species are also depicted. Full-color photos generally show the flowers of the plant, and while insets of leaves (and occasionally fruits) are often included to help in identification. A bar on each photo allows users to accurately judge the actual size of each flower. Both serious botanists and casual nature observers will welcome this beautifully illustrated and expertly detailed guide. BL The most comprehensive field guide for the northeastern United States, including New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with additional coverage of adjacent areas in eastern Canada BL Over 1,400 species are described; nearly all are illustrated by beautiful color photographs BL Photographs accurately depict the flowers; insets show details of leaves and other features BL Photos, descriptions, and maps on facing pages make the book simple to use BL Color-coded maps indicate both the range of the species and the time when it is in bloom

4 out of 5 stars One of the best........2007-03-31

A sturdy binding, somewhat water resistant pages along with excellent photographs (not line drawings), and descriptions of about 1450 native, and naturalized wildflowers of the region. What more could be asked of a field guide. An excellent resource.

    3 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures.......2006-08-25

The volume has nice pictures and is somewhat organized so that a beginner could use it to stimulate further interest in Botany and Wildflowers.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Photographed New Book.......2006-08-12

The first thing that strikes you about this book is the quality of the photographs of the plants. Instead of the line drawings so often used, here are beautifully printed full color pictures of the blooms of the flowers. Note: FLOWERS, this is not a random guide to plants, but to flowers.

Next comes the identification procedure that they have developed. Over a couple or three pages they provide a guide to identifying the plant. Here's an example:

    Flowers Yellow
    Leaves Opposite
    Leaves Simple
    Petals 4 - 6
    Pages 140 to 153.

The book covers the Northeastern United States from about Washington DC to Chicago, and up past Maine a little ways into Canada.

    Beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars The Amateur Botanist's Best Friend.......2006-08-02

This book has been a tremendous help in my efforts to identify the myriad wildflowers in our area. With only a couple of exceptions I have easily found a match for all my 'specimens'. I've learned the lesson that one needs a book that specializes in the area of search, NOT a general wildflower guide. The pictures are beautiful and the descriptions and seasonal maps also aid in the hunt.

        Product Description

Wildflowers are different from many wild things in that they don't scurry away never to be seen again, and they are not afraid when we approach them. Wildflowers are wonderful. They are colorful, they smell good, and they are everywhere. They are an integral part of our environment appearing almost as if by magic in our backyards, neighborhoods, local parks, woods, and fields. With a little effort, we can become acquainted with the wildflowers of our yards and neighborhoods, learn their names, and even a little more about them. You will find yourself looking forward to them each year and will discover that you learn something new each season. The purpose of this book is five-fold. First, it will help you learn to identify the most common wildflowers in any neighborhood, field, yard, or park. Second, you will learn about the basic anatomy of the plant and its flowers as an aid in the identification process. Third, you will come to appreciate the role of the wildflower in the world of nature. It is exciting to realize that the Goldfinch feeding on the thistledown of the Bull Thistle could mean the young are in a nest nearby, or that perhaps the Finch is taking the thistledown to build a nest. It is fascinating to know the Teasel head will soon be getting two rings of flowers as it continues blooming, and if it is to be used in a dried fall flower arrangement we need to bring gloves in order to handle it safely. The fourth purpose of this book is to encourage you to use these plants in your own backyards and gardens. Many of these plants can be successfully used to enhance the landscape design. Often this can be done as effortlessly as collecting seeds or digging a plant or two. However, care must be taken not to violate any laws or the integrity of another's property. Many wildflower gardeners are willing to share. Wildflower gardening is very popular and many gift catalogs exist as well as local garden shops that can take care of your needs. As this book cannot possibly cover all the wildflowers, the fifth purpose is to pique your curiosity and encourage you to learn more about other plants and wildflowers.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully organized and illustrated.......2002-06-08

This book is very intelligently organized. Ms. Levine chose to order the identification keys in a manner that would be most helpful, rather than strictly by botanical taxonomy. This makes sense given that the winter remains of plants do not track their taxonomy. The illustrations are also a joy just to look at.

This book is attractive and easy to use, but its astounding aspect is high technical quality of the text. The author clearly knows the plants of these great north country forests and meadows. While I could get lost in technical terms such as calyx lobes and corollas, its worth the trips to the glossary in back. At times, the "Habitat/Range" and "Comments" text reminds me of some of the great botanical works of a century ago. If you are looking for a general guide with the technical power to challenge and support field identifications, this book has no equal for these beautiful woods. If only for those flies and mosquitos of summer...

While snow was still on the ground, noted naturalist/photographer Hope Ryden set out to find and document the wide variety of wildflowers that bloom each season. In conversational essays accompanied by stunning full-color photographs, she introduces readers to more than thirty wildflowers found in backyards, vacant lots, and swamps across the country, from the common dandelion to the rare and delicate nodding ladies' tresses. She also tells the story behind the name of each flower and describes the relationship each has with its specific winged pollinator—bird or insect. Informative and beautiful to look at, Wildflowers Around the Year will inspire young readers to start their own search for these often hidden treasures. Bibliography.

I have lived in Paris for over two years, but this guide remains my favorite for restaurant ideas, bars, cafés, and days I just want to change my neighborhood. While prices are in francs, and some of the stuff about bar and club trends is a bit dated, it's still the best resource I've found besides word-of-mouth for how to see the City of Lights on a budget. The restaurant suggestions are especially well-chosen.
