3 out of 5 stars I can take it or leave it. .......2004-11-13

Well...it's okay but not worth the time I waited for it's release. The first time I heard about Vol. 3 was at the Flash Forward 2004 Conference in San Francisco. I really looked forward to Billy Bussey and Shane's Chapter's but when I read them they did not have the substance I thought it would pack. Shane gave a few nuggets as far as techniques but it was mostly philosophical garbage (as with many other contributors of the book) that could have been left for an autobiography rather than a book that is geared towards actually teaching the customer something. I would say get the book for some decent tidbits but you would probably get more out of the first volume.

2 out of 5 stars not what i thought it was.......2004-10-13

after reading these reviews, I was really excited for my New Maters of Flash vol3 to arrive. I really liked volume 1 when it came out years ago. But I ended up returning this book because I was disappointed. Most of the animation "tricks" here are about character animation - mostly how to use flash's drawing tools to make the characters look 3D, and how to use code to make them move. Being a motion graphics animator, the only things i found which were relevant to me (maybe 3 projects) were frankly somewhat boring and predictable.

If you're an intermediate/advanced flash animator/programmer looking for really clever motion graphics tricks, there may be only 1 or 2 projects of interest here to you.

If you are somewhat of a novice and want to make really cool characters and scenes in flash and become expert with the drawing tools for this type of usage, you will probably get something out of it.

5 out of 5 stars a revolutionary reference.......2004-09-24

If i wasn't better than that, I would keep this book a secret... But i know that the flash world evolves because of the beauty of sharing. I felt that this book was priceless. Each and every author is a living phenomenom. If you are not even interested in flash, this book is still worth your while. The people who wrote this book are truly inspiring and have wonderful insights and theories about design/art/interactiivity... For flash designers: this book is a must. This book describes tricks of the trade as well as must-know actions, animations, drawing techniques. The difference between this book and all the others is that this book is the real deal; meaning, that the world's leading designers are showing you their award winning web sites and take you step by step on how to create them. Not simplistic boxy case studies; but the actual stuff that amazes you when you explore flash kit's winners of the month.-------Priceless

5 out of 5 stars Amazing value, amazing book.......2004-08-20

Even if you never plan to use Flash this is an amazing resource to some really cool sites. The book is full of animations, and explanations of cutting edge Flash projects. Unlike most Friends of Ed, you get a CD with the book. The CD has a menu system to highlight each of the Authors in the book. You get bios, info, and direct links to great sites. If you are into Flash, there is lots of information and ideas to help your work be more creative. You will also see a variety of viewpoints on how to use Flash, and some very personal insights. There are four artists whose work alone would be worth the price of this book. Adam Philips provides a great chapter on lighting, and his website shows a real animation master at work. The Jared Tarbell chapter shows a design project from start to finish on pattern making. Anthony Eden's work is very inspirational, but Olga Bergner's chapter provides lots of information on good character design and again provides lots of details on how he makes Flash magic. These are my favorites, but I am sure you will find your own in this Book and CD. What really makes this book work, is each author has concentrated on the part of Flash they enjoy, and show how they have used Flash to further their own creativity.

Learning by doing is always good, especially if you have good role models to follow. As part of the publisher's "Showing It" series, this book brings together 19 of the most innovative designers who are working in motion graphics, and gives them lots of page room to talk about their work in general, their inspirations (movies, games, etc.), and how they created some of their best projects. Some of the best-known participating artists include Tomasz Jankowski of Mondo.com, Todd Purgason of Juxt Interactive, Eric Jordan of 2advanced.com, and Irene Chan of Eneri.net.

Following along is easy; large screen shots and step-by-step narratives guide readers through each process--often telling not just how to do a particular something, but also why. How you then apply these methods to your own work might not be spelled out, but by re-creating the projects you'll gain the confidence and experience that you need to push your skills to the next level.

Projects range from thevoid's fairly basic, tween-heavy ripple animation to an interactive menu that's driven by dynamic ActionScripting from James Paterson of presstube.com. Simple text effects are covered, too, along with an introduction to ActionScripts, 3-D animation using only Flash, ActionScripting and Swift 3D, deciding between bitmap and vector art, discussions of download time, integration of Photoshop and Director, and many other topics. All project files are included on the companion CD-ROM, along with some extras.

This is a great addition to the Flash library, but the book unfortunately gives off an overpowering ink smell. The layout of the chapters is sometimes confusing, too. Neither of these issues applies to the CD-ROM, however, which reproduces everything in the book in animated form. All you have to do is sit back and watch. And there are some great interview movies, through which you can get to know some of the personal motivations and philosophies of favorite Flash gurus. --Angelynn Grant

3 out of 5 stars Showcase, yes; Tutorial, No.......2004-02-03

This book presents some beautiful applications of the Flash product. However, you will not be able to duplicate their results based on the brief explanations of how they were accomplished, unless you are quite advanced yourself. More than half of the fla source files are not included on the CD-ROM, only the final swf product.

2 out of 5 stars Not the right book for anyone.......2002-04-14

This is not for the beginners, and as an advanced actionscripter myself, I gained nothing. Maybe the intermediate will learn a few things or two about duplicating movies and if-else statements, but not much more. You will know how to recreate some tired and highly copied visual effects though, something you could of grabbed from the many flash resources online, and for free. But of course, knowing and understanding is two very different things. Actionscripting is a powerful language; if you don't understand at the basic level what certain commands do, you are going to have to be happy grabbing other people's scripts and editing them to your liking, which won't take you far at all. Plus flash is a heck of a lot more than just eye candy. So the basic point is, don't think of this book as a tutorial.

4 out of 5 stars Well produced, slick for motivation and design ideas.......2002-04-10

No, this isn't a "how to use the flash app" book, there's plenty of good ones out there for that (I found the "Teach yourself flash 5 in 24 hours" remarkably better than I had expected for this).

The "new masters" book is an excellent full color wide page design concept book, to give intermediate/experienced users some new ideas and insights to build on.

In this it does an excellent job. It's one thing to go to a website (I like flashkit) and see the 'cool sites' examples, it's more useful to read this kind of book, which gives you the original designers insights, tutorials, and even a half dozen interview movies, along with source flas' for many of the projects.

So, it's more than worth the price of a PS2 game :) and I found it to be useful. I'm glad I didn't let the "but it doesnt explain how to code actionscript" neg reviews keep me from buying it.

I paid full price at a local bookstore, wish I had bought it here on amazon instead :o

Good book, worth getting for the intermediate+ level flash designer. Not for newbies. And, they tell you this.

4 out of 5 stars very good for designers.......2002-03-26

That's a very good book for designers. There are a lot of tricks, but you will not find subjects like take a first glance to flash 5 or things like that.

3 out of 5 stars They might, but you won't........2002-01-15

They could well be the masters but as far as you and me, we won't be from reading this book. To me, there is only about 30% of content really worth reading and learning. Everything else is just plain useless towards the above average designers. Beginners will find quite a few good, eye popping, "wow" sort instant effect. But with lack of a certain level of art direction in the book, you still can't design a good Flash, and I have seen the effect on some people's site already (like a poorly mixed Ministry of Sound CD). Joshua Davis is one talented Flash creator, but unfortunately he only contributed so little at the end of the book,... And the CD is just okay.

4 out of 5 stars very good for designers.......2002-03-26

this is not a actionscript book or a book that explains the features about the flash program. It's only a book that will give you an idea about how other designers (not masters that means a lot of years of experience) face their proyects and how they solve them. So it's very interesting if you want to know their process and some new tricks. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars This book rules!.......2002-03-16

This is the coolest book I have ever seen, unlike any other book out there. Includes tutorials, background information, and more. If you love Flash, this book must be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great samples and inspiration.......2001-12-23

Code samples and tutorials from different Flash artists, including individual influences and perspectives. Some of the artists are way out there. The code is consistently understandable if you really spend the time with the tutorials, and you have a basic ActionScript knowledge. This book is cool.

5 out of 5 stars The secret is in the code!.......2001-09-20

Plain and simple this book is about the code! Some of the authors have interesting perspectives (Brain Limond) but when it really comes down to it, who cares!

The real value of this book is knee deep in the minds of the people who wrote the actionscript for the tutorials.
Pick it apart, and get in to the head of each of these authors and there you will find the price of the book worth every penny you may have had to pinch to purchase this very expensive book.

The coding style that Erik Natzke talks about and demonstrates in this book is priceless.

So bottom line if your a actionscript junky and you got the IQ to dive into someone else's mind I just don't see how you could not love this book!

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for your collection.......2001-09-03

The tutorials worked through in this book are really up close and detailed, and absolutely nothing is skipped: each chapter begins with instructions on what size to create your canvas, and finishes by telling you to export your final .swf file. In between you have not only detailed descriptions, but also loads of screenshots, and every line of ActionScript code file typed out. The book also comes with an accompanying CD containing not just every .fla used in the book, but also video interviews with some of the designers, and if the static printed screenshots in the book aren't enough for you, then just sit back and watch the amazing animated walkthroughs on how to build your movie in the application itself. So if you don't feel like lugging the massive 500+ page book around with you when you go somewhere, just pop the CD into your pocket and you've got everything you need.

The book continues in the fine tradition of its predecessor, but now, in response to user demands apparently, there is a brand new element to be found at the end of each chapter: Headnotes. This is a small section in which we are told how to expand the example we have just worked through, or how we can alter it slightly to get a totally different result. So if for example, the tutorial walks you through an effect that makes use of the cursor's X position to control a horizontal slide of some sort, the headnotes might suggest making use of both the X AND Y properties of the cursor to create an object that seems to rotate in 3D. It's things like this that mean the book is not just a set of 15 set, un-changeable effects that you can't do much with, without looking like you're ripping off the creator, which some people may mistakenly believe when merely skimming through the book. The headnotes invite your mind to look at the examples not as one complete contained effect, but rather one end result that was achieved by using a whole range of possible techniques within Flash, and that it is these individual techniques that your mind should be looking to and combining when wanting to create any other effects of your own.

Although this book is aimed at people who are "at the summit" and is written by some of the leading Flash designers in the world, it is a book that absolutely every Flash user (and a whole bunch of non-Flash users) of every skill level will enjoy immensely. The whole book is written in easy-to-understand terms, without ever once being patronising. This is not only an excellent book on how to learn to work with a fairly advanced level of Flash, but it is also an excellent standalone design book.

Before Joe Linsner gave the world his Goddess of Rebirth, Dawn, there was Cry for Dawn - a black and white anthology featuring some of the darkest stories ever to see print in the medium of comics. This volume collects Linsner's finest work from that early '90s milestone - out of print for several years - exploring such contemporary nightmares as AIDS, unplanned parenthood, and corporate America.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-18

Previous reviewer Tim Janson said it best, Joseph Michael Linsner was ahead of his time. For proof of that, look no further than Angry Christ Comix. Collecting stories from Linsner's acclaimed Cry For Dawn, Angry Christ Comix compiles some of the most horriffic, darkly funny, and startlingly poignant horror tales you will ever find in comic book form. Particularly "Burns Brightest", in which a young man learns he has AIDS after a one night stand, and sets out for revenge by infecting as many women as possible. "Dropping Anchor" finds an unhappy rocker stradled with a wife and baby wishing for freedom, while the darkly humerous "Dead" focuses on a punked out vampire and his bloody insights. There's much more in this collection, including some single page chapters entitled "A Page With No Meaning", which are funny as well as surprisingly thought provoking. Linsner truly was a man ahead of his time, with his incredible and stark artwork combined with his blood curdling tales. All in all, if you have never read or even heard of any of Linsner's works, you have been missing out to say the least, and you owe it to yourself to pick this collection up.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE COMICS MASTERPIECE! .......2007-01-29

I still remember picking up Cry for Dawn #1. At the time I was working at a Detroit Area comic book shop, one of the largest in fact. The late 80's and early 90's were a horrible era for comic books. It was all about excess...If the Punisher or Batman was popular, hey...let's give them three or four of their own titles, and lets have them guest-star in just about every other book we put out! And while were at it, lets make this issue have five different colors, or make it with a hologram, or die-cut, or prismatic, or foil. Into this mundane comic book landscape walked, no slashed Joseph Michael Linsner and Cry for Dawn. This was as extreme as comics had ever been outside of the underground arena and I remember how we had to sell that book in our adult section along with vintage Playboy and Penthouse magazines.

Nearly twenty years later, Image has brought together those outstanding stories by Linsner in Angry Christ Comix. I think its' safe to say that the last 17 or 18 years have done nothing to dull the razor sharp edge of Linsner's work. These are a true testament to just how far ahead of his time that he was. The work is haunting, often sadistic, and always spectacular, from cover-to-cover.

The opening story, "Kingdom of the Blind" finds a down on his luck artist commissioned by a mysterious woman to tattoo strange symbols throughout belly & chest, returning every few weeks to have additional work added and paying the artist huge sums of money for his skills. The shock of what the symbols are for is no less disturbing today than it was when first published.

"Burns Brightest" could even be considered more controversial today. After Jules has a one night stand with a woman and contracts the HIV virus, he decides to take his revenge on the world by sleeping with as many woman as he can. A repugnant, yet powerful story.

Other stories include "Bring me a Dream", "The Realist", "Eleven or One", and many more. The subject matter is strictly for mature audiences due to nudity, language, and graphic violence. This work had to have many other artists jealous and if it didn't, it should have. Just 21 when Cry for Dawn #1 was released, Linsner already was displaying the story-telling ability of a season veteran. Angry Christ Comix is a book that any true comic lover should have in their collection.

            5 out of 5 stars CFD Reborn!.......2006-11-26

These stories keep seeing publication, this being, I'm not sure, maybe the third incarnation of the TPB that first collected the angry works of Joseph Michael Linsner. The stories contained in these pages are not really a best of, but more the ones he was most personally responsible for. Cry For Dawn, the comic series has seen a surge of interest it really didn't have in it's initial release. People, comic fans have slowly discovered the art of Joseph Michael Linsner over time and are now seeking his earlier work, which, to be honest was quite good, but nowhere near the polished images he puts out today.

Cry For Dawn was an anthology series that ran from 1989 to roughly 1993. The issues came out sporadically and featured the work of quite a few artists and writers like Kevin J. Taylor, Greg "Dark One" WIlliams, Ken Meyer, Jr and of course Mr. Linsner himself. Joseph Linsner and Joseph Monks, whom he had started Cry For Dawn with, had a parting of ways which brought an end to the series and started Joseph Linsner on his path to stardom. After leaving CFD Publications, the name which Monks retained the rights to, he took his "eye" logo and Dawn herself and he went on to do some self-publishing, creating Tears of Dawn, then getting together with Robb Horan at Sirius and putting together a band of artists that rivaled anything the big guys had, featuring Drew Hayes (Poison Elves), Kevin J. Taylor (Fang), Greg "Dark One" Williams (Animal Mystic) and Joseph Linsner (Dawn) as the Art Director. With Sirius he published Drama, which featured the first full story appearance of Dawn, who in this TPB and throughout the Cry For Dawn series served simply as a hostess, sort of like a way sexier Crypt Keeper.

I will admit that I own every version of this book, being a comic collector, I probably only needed one, but being a collector of Joseph Linsners artwork, well, I simply had to have them all.

For the sake of the stories, which will scare you although they are truly more like urban horror stories than true "horror" stories, their social and societal relevance will make you stop and think, you only need one, but get one, and if possible, pick up the now hard to find and sometimes pricey original Cry For Dawn series (9 issues), the stories are fantastic and the artwork is phenomenal. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Real nice for the horror/SF-fans.......2001-06-21

This is a book that collects the better stories of the immensly succesfull "Cry for Dawn" series by Joseph Michael Linsner, the serie that was the breakthrough for Linsner and the first Dawn-series. People who liked 'Dawn' must surely pick this up (also because the original issues are near impossible to find AND darn expensive if you do find them). I personally think it's not as good as the later six-part miniseries "Dawn" (later in TPB renamed as 'Lucifers halo') but that's not a negative point, it says more about the quality of the latter series. It's still very close though.

The stories within this trade aren't related to each other, there's no continuity. The only things they have in common is that the stories center around Dawn, the goddess of life and death. Tales with a lot of symbolism and surrealism in them. It's more a collection of loose stories which are especially suitable for the Fantasy/Horror lovers.

4 out of 5 stars The Compilation of the Cry for Dawn series.......2000-04-14

This is great for any intellectual out there, its a compilation of the Cry for Dawn comic book series, which was writen in the end of the 80's, all black and white work, except for the cover (which has Dawn the character herself, who latter on becames a heroine in some of his comic book series) its very melancholic, somewhat depressing, very dark, but that goes with his style which is very gothic indeed, if u like gothic, you'll adore this, intelectual and with some good art work, I found it to be a classic comic book compilation, represents a side of the eighties all too well, for those who experienced the darker side of it, and for those who havent, you'll grasp some of it with this book.
