excellent.......2000-06-21
Will Parfitt has written an excellent book on Qabalah, concentrating on the practical implacations of the system, providing psychological, mystical and magical techniques.
An excellent introduction to modern qabalah.......2000-06-07
This is a book I frequently reccomend to people asking me about Qabalah, it is well written, consise and perhaps unique in it's way of helping the reader to understand the tree of life on more levels than just the intelectual. The exercizes offered in the book are great, and will likely give even the most seasoned qabalist a new understanding of the Sephiroth. PArfitt also includes excellent information on how the qabalah fits in with mysticism, magick and especially psychology. If you want to use the tree of life as a tool for spiritual and psychological development, this is perhaps the best book since Regardie's "Middle pillar"

Book Description
Brazil intended the Transamazon Highway to be a paved road to riches, but as recently as 1989 the 1,000-kilometer trip from Belém to Altamira required "three days, six buses, three boats, and a ten-hour hitch with a truck driver named Eduardo" to travel. This lively, readable study explores why colonization of the Amazon fell short of the planners' vision. Delving into issues of land distribution, soil ecology, and the colonists' adaptation to local ecosystems, Douglas Stewart uncovers the forces that drive deforestation. Recounting fascinating stories of the colonists he met, Stewart also describes how small farmers have banded together during the past decade to overcome the challenges of the frontier. Their collective action, he asserts, if backed by government policy, could lead to progressive land redistribution and wiser use. This broad-ranging look at why deforestation has occurred in the Amazon, what its consequences are, and what can be done to halt and remedy the process should be read by everyone concerned with preserving the Latin American environment.

Did you know that toucans have blue feet, that manatees have whiskered noses, or that some iguanas are called "Jesus Christ lizards" because they move so quickly that they seem to run across water? This book will help you explore Guatemala, "the land of many trees," one of the most ecologically diverse countries in the world. In a week's time, you can climb (one of 33!) volcanoes above the clouds or commune with howler monkeys in a cloud forest, bask on black-sand beaches or explore a limestone wonder. Guatemala's natural wonders are found among the surreal magic of the ruins of the ancient Maya and the current-day cities and villages of their ancestors. Thoughtfully presented with a useful chapter on conservation and responsible tourism, this is a guide packed with practical advice.

Excellent!.......2000-01-28
(From Planeta.com Journal) - Reading Richard Mahler is like opening a letter from a well-traveled friend. This is the second edition of a regional classic. Its coverage of environmental issues and travel options is first-rate. This is a must read for any eco traveler.
Completed Updated In 1999.......1999-06-07
As the author of this book, I am predictably biased in its favor. However, I feel it's important to say that I spent several months in late 1998 and early 1999 poring over every word, photo, and map to make sure that it was correct, helpful, and informative. Readers will find everything from restaurant and hotel reviews to reports on Spanish schools, craft markets, and Maya ruins. I find Guatemala a fascinating and rewarding country to visit and it remains one of the world's greatest travel bargains. However, since the Peace Accords were signed in 1996 and the guerrilla war ended, more and more people are discovering this place. Therefore, prices will only go up. I'm convinced that there is no better time to see the unspoiled treasures of Guatemala than right now, before the crowds descend. My specialties are the contemporary and ancient cultures of the Maya as well as the national parks of the country. In the latest edition of my book, I've gone to great lengths to include every possible useful tidbit of information on these subjects, from the best place to explore the rainforest to the best way to tour Tikal. As always, I am eager to receive reports from readers, who supply me with some of the best insider information available. Enjoy!
The one book to take to Guatemala.......1999-01-29
This book is based on an earlier book by Mr. Mahler, which I used frequently during my 1994-97 posting to Guatemala. I had several guide books, but found that Mr. Mahler's was the one I turned to most frequently. I eventually got to many of the places mentioned in his book, and found that the information he had provided was accurate and useful. I spoke with Mr. Mahler just before leaving Guatemala, and am delighted that he included some of my suggestions in this book, including Los Viejitos Restaurant in Nebaj (look for the green door)--the owner told me she used to cook for Nancy Sinatra!
If you love adventure, this is your book!.......1998-06-21
The investigation of Richard Mahler in Guatemala is above excellent, and I really love all the details of adventure in it. I recommend this book to every tourist and local people, is amazing all the beauty that we have down here. Is very complete, including hotels, restaurants, what to see, what to do in each part of the country. A list of volcanoes, rivers, caves and recommendations of fishing, cycling, kayaking, etc etc. with a list of tourist operators on each issue. Great book!
Product Description
Designed for travelers interested in an off-the-beaten-path trip, have limited time to plan and travel and don't want an organized tour, this Artful Nomad travelers' guidebook pops a jalapeno in the present-day notions of travel guidebook writing. Nomad author Steve Stratman narrates a 9-day route between Caye Caulker and San Ignacio Belize; Flores, Guatemala; and the ancient Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala. He provides a day-to-day schedule with travel connections, activity and outfitter information, hotel and restaurant recommendations. He provides cultural insights and generally spouts a small, witty fountain of peculiar facts and travel-wizened observations. The artfully designed book complements his narrative with vivid photos, illustrations and city and country maps, and website links as well as a having a user-friendly layout to help you navigate the countryside on your own.

"Sign me up".......2007-05-03
I have been a bit hesitant to travel to Central America, though I would like to do so. With this book I feel confident that my travel will be fun and full of adventure but the headaches of planning are taken care of. I am not looking for an ordinary "group tour" type of vacation and I am excited to try travel according to The Artful Nomad! In addition to the practical info, Steve Stratman's humor, storytelling and graphics are a real bonus over other travel books.

Necessity if you want to trek, volcano-climb, raft.......2004-02-28
My friend and I traveled with the Lonely Planet Guatemala book (published Jan. 2004) and with this book. They complemented each other very well. Lonely Planet has terrific practical info (bus schedules, etc.) but little info on how to climb volcanoes, go trekking, rafting, horseback riding, etc. Adventure Guide to Guatemala had what we wanted: volcano/trekking-off-the-beaten-path info. Our travel style is extremely independent (we wanted to ascend volcanoes without a guide) but the book is very appropriate as well for people who prefer to work through formal ecotour companies or guides, or people who can afford nicer ecolodges and bed-and-breakfasts. They are all listed in this book. There is extensive information on how to explore the Mayan archaeological sites.

Great even for a Guatemalan Expat!.......2000-10-13
Although I have not lived continuously in Guate since '87, I travel back home once a year so for the holiday season (my parents still live back there). You would think that I know all the ins and out of my country, but things keep changing...even some of my old pals and relatives can't keep up. In addition, I now have the monumental task of showing off my country to my American husband. I found this guide to be extremely comprehensive, well structured, well informed, up to date and beautifully presented. There are a lot of guides that don't do justice on the beauty and spectacular color of Guatemala and this one pulls it off! A must for any future or armchair traveller to Guatemala...el pais de la eterna primavera.

Excellent, Helpful Guide.......2007-03-05
Once again, the Lonely Planet has outdone itself with its guidebook, Guatemala. Even Guatemalans recognized the book and held it in high regard. My traveling companion and I started calling it, La Biblia--the Bible--by the second day of travel. It was, however, a 2004 edition. I traveled in February 2007. Some things were out of date or not mentioned. Nonetheless, as someone who mainly hit the tourist spots of Antigua and Pana, I felt very well satisfied with the advice and guidance in the book.
Great buy!.......2007-02-26
If you're heading to Guatemala, this book has tons of useful information. The maps could be better, but overall this book was with me where ever I went.
useful, but disappointing.......2006-02-05
on every backpacking trip, a lonely planet was always one of the must-haves because they are always so on it when it comes to accuracy and reliability. well, i was disappointed by this guatemala edition. the author raved about the country: antigua, tikal, the people...so i had all these warm fuzzy expectations. that was mistake number one.
antigua was described as this beautiful "magical" colonial city. i spent over two weeks there to study spanish and magical wasnt at all what i experienced. nice, yes, but not MAGICAL. ever been to oaxaca, mexico? now, thats lively and magical. antigua shuts down pretty early, so if youre looking for food say at 10pm or later, youre out of luck. if you like bars (i dont), well, then your IN luck. the buildings in antigua were colorful and you can find old landmarks all around, but again, it did not have that "magical" atmosphere like the author described. im not alone on this.
tikal was not a must-see. at least not if youve already seen all the ancient sites in southern mexico. i was not impressed, but the author of the lonely planet (and apparently by some travelers) raved about how amazing it was. maybe the view from one of the temples was breathtaking, and oh yes, the howling monkeys can give you a startle if you didnt know they were just monkeys, but other than that, i was not impressed.
and as for the people, i didnt find them to be all that warm and friendly. they know youre a tourist, and they treat you like one. i stayed with a family for two weeks and still didnt experience that sincerety and warmth. i surmised somehow, that the toursim altered that experience of genuine friendliness. i found that especially true in antigua. the locals really take advantage of the tourist. theyre like robots repeating the same whiny phrase, "que compran?" when you walk by. sometimes, they dont even look at you when they say it.
i guess the author was enamoured with guatemala (he has been many times)...but i didnt find his bias to the country to be all that accurate. its the first time that ive been disappointed by the info in a lonely planet, after having used at least six or seven of them for my other travels.
buy this one for its maps and how-to-get-around and logistics like that. just watch out for the biased reviews of places. judge for yourself and ask other travelers.
This book is spot on........2006-01-22
I traveled to Guatemala for two weeks in the summer of 2005 and used Lonely Planet the entire time. It was my first trip there, so I needed and wanted extensive detail and maps, which this book provided. I found it to be right on about everything from restaurants and hotels to ATM locations. I appreciated the small bits of cultural and historical information as well. The transportation sections were the most helpful. On several occasions I had people ask to borrow my LP to look up bus connections. Overall, I thought it was excellent and recommend it highly to anyone traveling to Guatemala.
Very helpful guide to travel to Guatemala........2004-01-21
Lonely planet is very popular in this country. You'll see a lot of travelers with a copy of the book. The maps are very acurate and you'll find good recomendations. What's great about this country is that people are friendly, so you only need the basics and the book has them.

Guatemala Map (Travel Reference Map)
ASIN: 1569751943 |
Book Description
Just when you think globalization has conquered all, Hidden Guatemala reveals a land where highland villagers carry on traditions dating back to the ancient Mayan empire, and where lofty volcanoes, verdant valleys, vast rainforests, and ancient archaeological sites have stood untouched for centuries. Author Richard Harris shares know-how earned the hard way in journeys by pickup truck, motorcycle, riverboat, "pig 'n' chickens" bus, and on horseback to the most remote corners of the country. He explains the best way to see famous Mayan sites like Copan and Tikal, then lays out the specific steps needed to find Piedras Negras and Altar de los Sacrificios, which are reachable only by river. Blending colorful descriptions, contagious optimism, and blunt honesty, Harris explains how to overcome limited services while maximizing the pleasures of exploring this exotic locale.
