Book Description
In a career that spanned nearly seven decades, Josef Sudek, one of the masters of twentieth-century photography, created his own solitary world of shadow and light, of theme and variation. Exquisitely reproduced in tritone, the more than one hundred images in this monograph convey the spirit of Prague as well as the spirit of Sudek.
The photographs are complemented with a text by Anna Farova, one of the foremost photography curators and writers in Eastern Europe and a longtime friend of Sudek's. She traces his life and work, beginning with the devastation of World War I, in which he lost an arm, through his development as a photographer and a central figure in Prague's artistic life. Sudek's passionate, impressionist images, as well as his penchant for exploration, earned him the affectionate title "Poet of Prague."
Customer Reviews:
The best photographer, hands down........2007-05-21
Josef Sudek was an amazing man, talent, and visionary. This monograph is one of very few that were widely distributed to help tell his story and share his hard-earned images. Imagine, Aperture, a magazine with only 2 issues per year, dedicated to the best of all things photographic, devoted an entire year of publication to Sudek. My favorite mental image of Sudek is of he himself finally shooting his muse, a church in Prague, his only arm franticly fanning up dust with a card as he rushed from this beam of light to another, so as to give the light volume in the image. You see, Sudek was a very patient master... until the image was ready to be taken. He might scout a location for years before shooting it, waiting for just the right time of year, just the right angle of light, and just the right atmospheric conditions around his subject. Then when the day came to shoot, he was a focused madman. In my eyes, Sudek IS photography, and this monograph is the most inexpensive, most thorough background of the man and his work. Although not the most thorough collection of his work, it is an excellent introduction that will leave you searching for more about him. Good luck, and enjoy!
Sudek at his best........2007-01-11
Sudek inspired the entire world of his countrymen and women, and now we can also join in the feast of his imagery. Astounding in breadth and scope, these poetic photographs reveal a time gone, yet eerily present. If you write and photograph as well, this book is pure inspiration. Dark, moody, yet uplifting. Speaks to the treasure of time as it is captured with quiet energy and subtle tone and value.
He lost one arm in World War I, but that did not stop him from using a camera to record the world he witnessed all the rest of his life. His images of Prague are arresting and pull you into the streets as he saw them. Very very good book; a treasure to own.
Book Description
Dubbed the "poet of Prague," Josef Sudek was one of the most important and celebrated of Czech photographers. Sudek produced his best work during his middle-aged years, having grown up and out of the rules of Modernism and into a style of his own. Whereas his photographs from the 1930s are mainly a reflection of the external world, by the 1940s he was returning to himself, finding his own unique creative path. It was during this period that he made his most famous photograph, a view of the world seen through his studio window, the window ledge doubling as a stage for still life objects--a setup which he repeated to great effect. Not even the pressures of WWII and the difficult postwar years, including the demands of socialist realism in the arts, interrupted the continuity of his oeuvre.

Great series.......2005-11-10
These are the first three of nine in the total series, all great reads and able to stand alone, definitely the best trilogy of the nine.
An outstanding series to challenge your mind!.......2005-05-10
I would first like to say that this review is not only for "Game, Set and Match", but also for the other two trilogies, "Hook, Line and Sinker", and "Faith, Hope and Charity". I believe that all nine works must be spoken of here, or the mood that the author creates will have been lost.
From the first sentence in "Berlin Match" to the last paragraph of "Charity", Len Deighton has created a masterpiece of intrigue, double-dealing and the cloak and dagger mentality that is peculiar to the British Secret Service. Looking at Bernard Samson and his family, friends, enemies and detractors has made for an extremely interesting read: I believe that I read all nine in about a month and a half.
In a style similar to John LeCarre, Deighton takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride that starts out with trepidation, builds to a almost certain climax, only to finish with an entirely different ending than anticipated. I disagreed with the author's statement that each novel can stand alone and be read in any sequence. I believe that each book laid a groundwork that the following novel picked up and developed further.
I highly recommend this nine volume series and would welcome Mr. Deighton to write a final Bernard Samson work. Enjoy, and good readuing!

Thinking of situations in an entirley different view........1997-05-07
The Mensa Genius Quiz book got us to wreck our minds with each riddle. The ones about liars and truthtellers town were even challenging when one had to explain the solution. My friends and I once spent hours because a friend of mine still couldn't figure out how the solution worked. It allowed you to think about the answers to riddles in an entirely different way looking at things all twisted, backwards, and upsidedown with no possibilities excluded

Carrie's lost her edge. She's tired of her life being only about tennis and missing out on parties, trips to the mall with her friends, and boys. More than anything, Carrie's really tired of the pressure from her parents to be the best, especially when she's not sure she still wants to play tennis.
During a tournament, Carrie makes a drastic decision and fakes a leg injury, withdrawing from competition. Her coach realizes Carrie's lie and pushes her student into a camp in Florida, away from her controlling parents. In a month, Carrie must decide if she wants to continue playing and how hard she's willing to work to achieve her dream.
GAME, SET, AND MATCH is just one of the sports books in Donna King's repertoire that prove she knows all about sports, pressure, and the desire to win. Her books fill a much-needed gap in sports fiction for girls.

While Godai searches for a way to propose to Kyoko, his rival Mitaka courts Kyoko ever more aggressively. But shy Asuna hasn't given up trying to win Mitaka for herself. Then Godai's old girlfriend shows up. For whom do the wedding bells toll?
Customer Reviews:
PROPOSALS.......2007-09-01
With only one volume to go, things are rapidly coming to a head. At least one of Godai's problems seems to be solved as Coach Mitaka debates proposing to Asuna under the assumption that he made her pregnant while in the midst of a drunken stupor. He also begins to realize that he might just care for her. But Godai still has problems of his own as his teaching exams are rapidly approaching and he's on the skids with Kyoko. She's angry at him for not exerting any self-discipline to get ahead in life. She's also mad because he always gets into compromising situations with women because of his wishy-washy nature. Because of this, Kozue comes around again after she gets proposed to by a guy she's been dating. She tells Godai she doesn't know what to answer because she wants to be with him! With all the mess going on at Maison Ikkoku, Godai decides to move out and live at the Bunny Club until his exams are over. Of course, all of the residents don't think he's going to be able to stay away, much less pass his tests! But if he doesn't pass, he won't be able to ask Kyoko to marry him.
Finally, after 13 volumes, we're coming to the end and getting to see how this love triangle works out. That's not to say Maison Ikkoku wasn't an enjoyable series. It's a classic. I'm just looking forward to seeing what happens in the last volume. There's a point in this volume where Godai says that if only him and Kyoko would just talk and listen to each other, they could have avoided a lot of misunderstandings and pain. Misunderstandings are what comedy is made of though, and a large part of our daily lives. While keeping the comedy level high throughout its run, Rumiko Takahashi has also put in a layer of complexity dealing with the striving to be accepted by the one you love and the acceptance that there isn't just one love in your life. You can begin again.
wow.......2002-03-16
The second last book in this outstanding series. Plot lines start coming to an end in this book. We finally get to see our hereo in a few kisses and embraces (ok the cover kind of gives it away). The end will simply have you begging for the next book.
Having read Ranma 1/2 and parts of Urusei Yatsura I was amazed by the maturity level of this series. The humour elements are certaintly their but it's raw human emotion that carries this series. At 14 volumes the plot is kept pretty tight (though i found the addition of the new tenant to Ikkoku extremely pointless) and doesn't have that drag on feeling like Ranma 1/2 does. Also the ending of this series will have more of an impact then the one Ranma 1/2 did.
Good lord.......2001-11-22
There is alot of stuff that happen sin this book. The main point being that Shun Mitaka is put out of the contention for Kyoko's affections. He does end up marrying Asuna, but the interesting part is how he ends up marrying Asuna. Also Kozue finally confronts Godai about the prospect of marriage because she has been proposed to by another man. Godai tries to tell herr that he is in love with someone else, but everything as usual ends up becoming a big misunderstanding. Kozue even kisses Godai, and of course Kyoko sees it, which fuels yet another jealous rage. Also Godai has to help out Akemi by paying the bill at a love hotel, but Kozue sees them coming out, and runs off and later tells Kyoko. Kyoko and Godai get in a huge fight in this book and it looks like everything could come to an end for their relationship. good stuff
At long last, but not least!.......2000-04-19
Godai gets slapped...Godai runs away...Godai tangles with another girl...nosy tenants hound Godai...Kyoko lands on top of a man...Kyoko runs away...Godai gets slapped again...nosy tenants hound Kyoko...Godai gets in trouble with another girl...nosy tenants hound Godai again...Kyoko VERY NEARLY gets slapped...Kyoko runs away again...blah, blah! With all that mean-spirited gremlin-like timing in Ms. Takahashi's romantic slapstick comedy, perhaps both Godai and Kyoko would be much better off if they just forgot about each other altogether.
But - in the very last book right before the grand finale yet to come up, we personally witness the true maturing of the young Godai from a drooling girl-crazy kid into a solemn-faced, long-suffering hero with tenderness for small children and a grim determination to succeed at everything, no matter what - to win the affections of the pretty young Kyoko. But - on the other hand, however, Kyoko herself, though a seemingly perfect, self-contained young woman on the outside, she actually turns out to be a spitting hellcat when it comes to sexual jealousy. All in all, it's a very engrossing trip that will surely hold you fast until the very conclusion of the whole series finally comes right off the press!
Eagerly awaiting the forthcoming conclusion.......2000-03-15
Maison Ikkoku has been an consistently charming and witty read, more so than the better-known "Ranma 1/2" series (which isn't bad, either!). "Game Set Match" shows about 3/4's of what we voyeurs into the lives of these bumbling Tokoyo-ites have been waiting for since probably the vicinity of Vol. 3.
Unfortunately (and on purpose), it's not the most important stuff that we're shown. We're given resolutions to the Mitaka and Kozue issues but left with an incredibly unfair cliff-hanger...what will happen to Kyoko and Yusaku? Of course, it had to be arranged thusly...but it still annoys the heck outta ya to be left dangling like that.
At the time of this writing, the final issue (in trade comic form) has been in stores for a few months now. I hope that before summer hits, we'll be given a chance to sit down with a loved one and finish out this incredibly engrossing series.
(One final question...will we *ever* know exactly what it is that Yotsuya does for a living?)

A Very Practical and Informative Book.......2006-08-31
This book provides more practical and applicable information than any other book that I have read on the subject.
Very practical book.......2004-08-17
I bought this book two years ago, and the lessons I learned from it have really stuck with me. These tactics have helped me tremendously in negotiations, from my travels in the developing world to my job in "Corporate America". What really made this book stand out for me is how focused it is on the practical. SOOO many books like this talk in the abstract, with a few examples, and leave it at that. I really like how the author spends much more time on practical examples and how to actually USE his tips than on "theory". Highly recommended
An excellent tool for work or home.......2001-07-17
I am a corporate labor relations manager for a Fortune 100 company. The practicle advice and reasoning in this book is very useful to me at the workplace and home. A definite thumbs up.
Kramer Does It Again!.......2001-07-08
This well-organized, unique and unusual approach to the presentation of negotiation theory has become one of my favorite desk reference tools. Kramer has succeeded in writing an excellent step-by-step "nuts and bolts" guide to negotiating and includes numerous "tips, tricks, and traps" that professional negotiators keep in their tool boxes. For those of us who are somewhat acquainted with the mechanics of negotiation, the detailed table of contents is a quick reference, an index-like guide, for locating specific information. Five stars!
