The best photo course ever!.......2007-10-01
It is funny world. It is world where clueless morons who should demonstrate reverence and compassion to great master who teach them great art can "critique" his work and his approach. Even more funny they do it with a stance, they judge the /excellence/ of John Hedgecoe's photography and even do not understand how preposterous and ridiculous they are. You should simply learn from the book. Take page after page and work it trough. This book is a gift by unbelievably knowledgeable and gifted artist who inspired generations of great photographers. When was a kid I was taught to avoid broad statements especially about subjects that I have very sketchy understanding.
This book is a real TRAESURE for anyone who is open minded and photographically, artistically gifted. This book provides that level of information that only super duper expensive full blown course can provide. It teaches effective approach to composition, to elements of frame design, to mood creation, to developing of artistic vision. It offers to you a chance for a couple of $ step into world of really BIG photography. It is probably the best book that will teach you to fill in a frame. The photos presented are wonderfully illustrative for every subject they are bound to. This is not a book for quick scrolling on a toilet sitting. It is a book for careful contemplation and observation, for analysis. It brings to your attention subjects of many levels most of which are not that obvious for a novice photographer. This book teaches the relationship between elements of composition to exposure and to light.
I do photography for 32 years and John Hedgecoe's books are most competent and most thoughtful photography guides one can find. As a great work this book is still relevant at digital age: when everybody speaks about megapixels and few about composition and design. In short, this book is an indicator: if you can't swallow it you always will be one of these who open first two pages of another book for beginners, close them and felt him/herself attached to great art. This book requires work, required completing of projects, examining and analyzing the results. It is book for a future PHOTOGRAPHER, looking for beauty, inspired and vigorous.
Was required for my photography class.......2007-01-19
Currently taking a Intro to Photography class and my instructor insisted that we get this book. Though it is a bit old 1998, and does not refer to digital cameras a great read. To make up for no digital reference we are also reading a book by Scott Kelby, the Digital photographer. Buy the book used, I spent $3.10 and it looks as good as new.
It's a nice book, but..........2006-02-28
I bought this book because it is used in a photography class I'm going to take. First the good things: a hard cover book, full color print, nice thick paper, a pleasing format and good pictures. What else to expect from a book about photography?
First of all, most of the pictures are good, but not /excellent/, and quite frankly, that's what I would expect.
Second of all, it contains a lot of pictures, neatly organized by theme or concept. But it doesn't judge any of the pictures. Granted, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it would be nice if the author said "the reason picture x isn't working as well as picture y is abc". Now, the style is more like "different angles will give different result for pictures. This picture was taken from the front. This picture was taken from the side".
It's not a bad book, and you can learn a lot from studying the pictures and discussing them (I guess that's why the photography class uses it), but it doesn't give 'recipes' on how to be a better photographer, and why to take pictures 'x' and not 'y'. The book is marvelous if you're not looking for those recipes.
But with a title 'introductionary course' is do expect them.
Recommended.......2005-11-30
Although I've never taken high school or college photography, I've been very interested in the heart. I bought this book to learn the "tricks of the trade" & additional information on lighting, angles, composition, balance, etc. The book stepped up & served me well. I've even managed to win photography awards since purchasing this book!
Not for pure beginner, but quite useful for more experienced.......2003-12-06
The title of this book may be misleading, and some people who is totally new to photography bought this book and don't find it very helpful. This is why it gets such low rating. But if you have basic understanding of exposure and composition, you will appreciate this book. It has a quite extensive list of possible subjects and topics of photography, and shows how to approach each of them with brief text introduction and several sample pictures. For example, when it explains how to take sports photos, it shows how to composite, what shutter speed to use, and what is the best time to press the shutter. It is not a step-by-step guide for beginners, but can be very valuable guidance for people with some experience and want to widen their photographic coverage.
Book Description
At the Academy Awards, the answer to who wore what matters just as much as who won what. Focusing on the actresses nominated for Oscars and a few seminal presenters, Made for Each Other traces the fashion trends of the widely watched Oscar ceremony. From the splendor of Vivien Leigh to the spare war-era chic of Ingrid Bergman, from the arresting glamor of Marlene Dietrich to Barbra Streisand’s daring sequined Arnold Scaasi pantsuit, Bronwyn Cosgrave delivers a revealing account of the entertainers who have helped shape the look of the Academy Awards and the international couturiers and behind-the-scenes fashion players on whom they’ve relied. Delving deep into the partnerships that have defined Oscar fashion—Claudette Colbert and Travis Banton; Grace Kelly and Edith Head; Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy; Elizabeth Taylor and Helen Rose; Liza Minelli and Halston; Cher and Bob Mackie; Jodie Foster and Georgio Armani; Nicole Kidman and John Galliano; Hilary Swank and Randolph Duke—Cosgrave demonstrates that from the beginning fashion was as integral to Oscar night as the films it celebrated. In a package befitting the glamorous subject, Made for Each Other includes previously unseen sketches of Oscar dresses by legendary couturiers, rare vintage photographs, and fashion illustrations of key dresses created especially for this book. For fashionistas and film buffs alike, Made for Each Other is a must have for anyone interested in this perfect pairing.

A fascinating account of Oscars fashion.......2007-03-20
I bought this book assuming it was sort of a glossy, coffee table photography book. Imagine my surprise when it came and I realized there was more text than photos! This turned out to be a good thing, though, as the book is a fascinating, almost scholarly anthropological account of Academy Awards fashion. You'll find yourself being amazed at not only the hoops the designers jump through to please the actresses, but at the level of minutae and detail that goes into designing (and then sewing) a dress that will be viewed by literally billions of people. There are hair-raising stories of dresses gone wrong, a good, long look at the vintage gowns some actresses have chosen to wear, and a lot of information on the actual construction of these unique gowns. It's well worth it for the Oscars aficionado.
AND THE NOMINEES ARE..............2007-03-15
Since its inception in 1929 the hyped and hallowed Oscar ceremony has been as much about fashions as it has been about films. Who is wearing what and by whom as she promenades down the red carpet? Wonder just how many of us would rather look at the dresses than the presentations. One who definitely has her eye on the gowns is Bronwyn Cosgrave.
A former editor for British Vogue Cosgrove covered the Academy Awards for the BBC and authored Costume and Fashion: A Complete History. She now offers another complete history, this time of the garb chosen by both presenters and nominees for Hollywood's biggest night.
We learn that the first actress Academy Award winner was Janet Gaynor who "Waltzed wide-eyed in her dress that stopped short on her knee." Undoubtedly a far cry from the sparkling provocative number designed by Bob Mackie for Cher. Mackie, sometimes called "the sultan of sequins" or the "rajah of rhinestones" was a bit concerned about the outre appearance that Cher had requested, even to asking "Don't you think this is kind of upstaging the person you are giving the award to?" As the world now knows, she was determined to "let them see that everything still looks good."
Obviously, looking good is what it's all about. Marlene Dietrich caused quite a furor in 1951 when she strolled on stage in a Christian Dior creation that looked "Airbrushed on."
The ceremony is also about payoff - in 2003 Nicole Kidman struck a deal with Chanel for seven million. Her contractual obligations included the wearing of gowns by Chanel's chief designer Karl Lagerfeld to gala events, such as the Oscars.
Richly illustrated, gossipy and unputdownable "Made For Each Other" gives us an insiders ear and eye to haute Hollywood. The 3-star rating is due to the lack of proper editing.

Poorly written and edited........2007-03-02
This book is very weak; it is poorly written and badly (if at all) copy edited.
I would not recommend this for anyone who is used to reading well written, grammatically
clean, well researched work. It is an infuriating and exhausting read because of
all the typos and all the sentences that just do not make any sense.
It makes me wonder about the quality of the research and anecdotal comments.
It is shocking that it was published and internationally distributed.
A good read but full of typos.......2007-02-28
I agree with a previous review that this book would have benefited from a thorough editing. Michael Kors for Celine designed Rene Russo's costumes in The Thomas Crowne Affair, not Randolph Duke. Gwyneth Paltrow won in 1999, not 1991. Hogs and Heifers, where Julia Roberts danced on the bar and left her bra nailed to the ceiling is in the Meatpacking District, not Tribeca. Nothing too serious, but irritating nonetheless. There are some great stories told here and the later part of the book that deals with the jockeying for position of designers to dress particular actresses is fascinating. But where are some of the more famous Oscar flops and hits? Kim Bassinger's self-designed dress. Demi Moore's hot pants? Halley Berry's Reem Acra? Kate Winset's huge necklace after Titanic? Uma's milkmaid dress? Another 30 pages would have been appreciated!
Made For Everyone.......2007-02-25
Wow! This book is such a great a read! Did you know that Miuccia Prada did not design Una Thurman's Prada Oscar dress? That Bette Davies picked up her Best Actress Oscar in an old film costume? That Louise Rainer wore her nightgown to the ceremony? The revelations just keep on coming. Bronwyn Cosgrave's masterpiece charts the secret history of all the major Oscar dresses we all love and remember. This book really has to become the difinative volume on the subject. It's fantastically gossipy and wondefully informative, a real joy to read. I could not put it down!
The pictures and illustrations are stunning. Cosgrave has tracked down many never before published sketches froma range of designers from Dior to Dolce & Gabbana. This really is made for anyone who loves both film and fashion!

100 Birds and How They Got Their Names
ASIN: 0195089022 |
Book Description
A gracefully written treatment of the mutualistic relationship between pine trees and jays, this book covers a wide range of regions, focusing on the Rocky Mountains and the American Southwest, but also ranging from the Alps to Finland, and from Siberia to China. The book treats one of the more satisfying stories of syumbiosis and nautural history from perspectives of evolution, ecology, and animal behavior.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful book but with physical problems.......2005-07-28
I have no problem with the review presented by "A Reader" but the paperback version of the book presents some physical problems. First, the illustrations are not in color and would, in fact, be considered poorly done if they were printed on newsprint. This detracts significantly from the pleasure of reading the book. Secondly, a number of pages display small areas of missing ink. The resulting dropped characters are quite annoying. There apparently is a cloth edition (at least the ISBN is shown) and that may be the source of the previous review.
A well researched and elegantly presented nature study........1998-08-07
Ronald Lanner is a professor of Forest Resources at Utah State University. He became fascinated with the ecology of the whitebark pine, the only member of the "stone pine" family in North America, commonly found in high elevations. Its wide distribution, and that of the other stone pines was puzzling, because they tended to have large pinecones that did not open by themselves, and their seeds were large and wingless, and could not be distributed by the wind. Clearly some other agent was responsible for the way these trees would appear in fire ravaged areas, and at very high elevations. But what?
Lanner concludes that Clark's Nutcracker, and related birds around the world, were and still are the instruments of these trees distribution throughout the northern hemisphere, and that this might well be a case of co-evolution; two entirely different species (in this case of two entirely different kingdoms of life), adapting to fill each others needs, to the ben! efit of both.
This is a short and well argued analysis of this relationship, clearly and entertainingly written. Lanner draws not just on his own work, but on the studies of many other scientists and field researchers, and it is one of the hallmarks of his book that he describes their research in some detail, giving you a feel for how science works, with seemingly unconnected studies of plants and wildlife around the world being put together in an increasingly coherent answer to Lanner's original question. It is impeccably scientific, but not dry in the least.
Lanner concludes, as almost any student of nature has to do in this era, with a warning that this beautiful relationship between birds and trees is endangered from several quarters, most notably a virulent man-introduced fungus that is devastating the whitebark pine, and thus also endangering the future of the creatures that depend on it.
The book has color photographs and is elegantly illustrated. As is the cas! e with any really well done book of this kind, you feel as ! if you have learned about a lot more than just the specific topic at hand. The book is really about interdependence--how different life forms, over time, create a network of relationships, so that removing any piece of the puzzle disrupts the whole. It's one thing to hear this line endlessly parroted in the media; it's another thing to have the intricacy and beauty of such an ecosystem laid out before you.
My only quibble is the title--I like it, but as a birder, would have preferred "The Nutcracker Suite." Oh well. (g)

This book is for people who were made for each other. And though there aren't too many artists in the world you can trust to translate that peas-in-a-pod kind of phenomenon into words and pictures, you can trust William Steig, cartoonist for The New Yorker since 1930 and illustrator of the Caldecott Medal-winning Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. "I love the hay you walk on," begins this smallish, square book, with a simple, scribbly illustration of a fancy milkmaid walking by an admiring rake-wielding farmer. The next page confesses, "You make this blossom blush," as a gentleman caller offers a bloom to his beloved.
You're the cat's meow.
In spite of everything, I love you.
It's bound to work out.
We're always in step.
If this sounds like a selection of mushy greeting cards bound in one volume, well, in a sense it is. But the wise and clownish Steig could never, and would never, create something so ordinary. Steig couples statements such as "Our love is eternal" with his unconventional drawings--in this case, a depiction of a strolling, formally dressed, huge-nosed, double-chinned pair who are somehow quaint and dignified in their eternal love and frumpiness. His comical, compassionate illustrations of regular folks add infinite nuance to the simple pronouncements of love. "The road is often bumpy" and "Till death do us part" conclude this endearing, quirky book that would make the perfect gift for the one who is made for you. Kids old enough to know love will understand this book, but Made for Each Other is meant for the young at heart more than the young. --Karin Snelson
Book Description
How many ways can you say "I love you" to the one who's made for you?
I love the hay you walk on.
You make this blossom blush.
We dance to the same music.
You keep me on my toes.

Wonderful statement about the truth of love.......2005-04-10
Once again, William Steig has broken out his stereotypical role as a children's writer. In this book, Stein professes not only the beauty of romantic love, but he also eloquently presents love as it is - a complicated mixture of pleasure and pain. Steig shows us all in this book, written for an adult audience, that true love endures all.
Made for Each Other.......2002-09-11
This may be a good 'let's make-up' gift for a spouse or even a quirky valentine. I did find that the line, "We remain true to our vows", with the illustration of a couple sitting on a bench with an obvious rift between them, was contrary to what I would want to give, although with the right sense of humor this book may be hysterical. I also thought that the contradiction of "Our love is eternal" followed by "Till death do us part" unappealing. I don't consider this a children's book at all, despite it being from children's author William Steig.
Great gift idea!.......2002-03-07
While searching for a small Valentine's gift for my girlfriend I came across this book. The title, Made for Each Other, summed up my feelings in four simple words but the pictures and the short phrases througout the book really express the true meaning of love. Love can be hazy, shiny and even imperfect. This book captures the many aspects of love in a quirky, off-beat way that might not be endearing to some but to others it explains our heart.
The gift must have helped because she is now my fiance'!!
A Wonderful Book About True Love!.......2001-08-19
I gave this book to my husband for an anniversary present. The text is sweet and simple. It is everything I wanted to say to my dear husband. Much better than a Hallmark card. The illustrations in the fabulous style of William Steig are comical. To top it all, Mr. Steig dedicated the book to his wife Jeanne, (of course).
Made for each other.......2001-03-13
The title is deceptive. It is not romantic at all. The sketches are ugly and the lines are not sweet or loving. Example: "I would kill for you". I returned it. I had purchased it to give to my husband. I would never consider it a loving gift!!

A GREAT BOOK.......2002-12-14
THIS IS TRULY A GREAT READ! I LOVED THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN GAVIN AND SUMMER. IT WAS REAL AND NOT A BUNCH OF UNREALISTIC DIALOG. THEY DIDN'T GET ALONG WHEN THEY FIRST MET BUT THEIR JOURNEY TO EACH OTHER WAS FILLED WITH FUNNY SITUATIONS AND SUMMER'S CHARACTER HAS SPUNK, SHE IS A REAL SISTAH! I LIKE THE FACT THAT GAVIN DID NOT BACK DOWN FROM HER BUT GAVE AS GOOD AS HE GOT. I HAVE SINCE READ THE OTHER TWO SEQUELS TO THIS BOOK AND ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT I HOPE SHE CONTINUES THEIR STORY AS WELL AS NICHOLAS, HE WAS HILARIOUS. GO OUT AND BUY THIS BOOK!
SIMPLY STUNNING.......2002-06-26
I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK! YOU GO THROUGH SO MANY DIFFERENT EMOTIONS....I LOVED THE PART WHEN SUMMER WENT TO DINNER WITH GAVIN AND SLAPPED STUNNED THE MESS OUT OF HIM....NICKY WAS A NUT AND I REALLY ENJOYED HIS CHARACTER. I ALSO LOVED........IF I KEEP ON TYPING I WOULD TELL YOU ABOUT THE ENTIRE BOOK. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I READ THIS BOOK OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. WHENEVER I NEED TO LAUGH I ALWAYS GO BACK AND READ THE DINNER SCENE WITH SUMMER AND GAVIN. I AM GOING TO READ SWEET TEMPTATION NEXT.
Queen Niqui!!!![....].......2002-06-22
This book was incredible!!! It was funny, touching, romantic, sexy..... Niqui I am a fan till the end! This book had all the ingredients of what a romance novel should be. I felt like I was one of the characters. I recommend this book to every woman who loves romance! It is honestly one of the best books I've ever read!!!![....]
Made For Each Other.......2001-06-10
This was a great romance novel, and my first time reading any of Ms. Stanhopes's books. The story was funny as well as steaming with the romance and passion of Summer and Garrett. These two were definitely made for each other. Both were selfish, stubborn, and did not believe that they could ever fall in love...until they met each other. I plan to read the sequel to this story and cannot wait to read the novel about Nicholas. A great read!
GREAT BOOK, AND THE STORY CONTINUES.......2001-03-20
MADE FOR EACH OTHER is an excellent novel. I read it in 3 hours flat. I just could not put it down!!! THE STORY CONTINUES in a book called: WEDDING BELLS, and I emailed the author and found out that the 3rd book in the series, THE BOOK ABOUT NICHOLAS, comes out this September 2001, and will be called, SWEET TEMPTATION!!!
I HIGHLY recommend this series of books! GREAT READING!
