An enlightening guide to a fantastic island.......2000-04-02
I want to suggest this book to everyone who is planning some "special" holiday. Coming originally from Sardinia and being in love with this wonderful island, I have always been disappointed by the poor information about it that was available abroad. Sardinia is generally left out by people planning a trip in Italy. And this is a real pity, since it has a lot to offer to every kind of travellers. This book gives a fairly complete overview of all the aspects that make Sardinia unique: the beutiful sea locations, from beaches with pink sand to enormous rocks abruptly surging from the water; the imposing prehistorical nuraghi whose origin and function are still mysterious; the wild nature of the Supramonte, in the center of the island, ideal for the trekkers; the special culture of Sardinian people, subject to many different influences along the centuries what made them very different from people living in continental Italy. And I can go on and on for hours. I strongly suggest: buy this book and go to Sardinia. You will not be disappointed!

Good-looking but hard to lug.......1997-05-19
Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. The Insight Venice guide is worth adding to your bookshelf, but its practical advice is getting a bit long in the tooth and its heft makes it less than ideal as a take-along guide. - Durant Imboden, Venice for Visitors, http://govenice.miningco.co

Book Description
Through innovative fieldwork and ethnographic writing, Hecht lays bare the received truths about the lives of Brazilian street children. This book changes the terms of the debate, asking not why there are so many homeless children in Brazil but why - given the oppressive alternative of home life in the shantytowns - there are in fact so few. Speaking in recorded sessions that participants called "radio workshops," street children asked one another questions that even the most experienced researchers would be unlikely to pose. At the center of this study are children who play, steal, sleep, dance, and die in the streets of a Brazilian city. But all around them figure activists, politicians, researchers, "home" children, and a global crisis of childhood.
Customer Reviews:
Few moral judgements.......2003-10-23
It was helpful to read a non-Christian study on street children. It was definitely more sociological and anthropological than most books I've read concerning children at risk, but I appreciated the objectivity. Hecht makes few moral judgments, but paints a picture of a daily reality for street children of northeast Brazil.
An Excellent, Intriguing Book.......2000-12-23
I bought this book to use for research for my term paper on Brazilian Street Children. Although I was already interested in this subject, I didn't really get into it until I started reading this book. It is very intriguing because it isn't just an outsider's point of view- Tobias Hecht includes numerous interviews with street children he knew well, and stories about the time he spent with these children getting to know them. He also looks at the issues concerning street children from many angles, not from a biased point-of-view, so as to make it more interesting. It's a fascinating topic and I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about this subject, even if it isn't for a term paper.
A harrowing look at street children in Brazil.......2000-07-08
It has been said that there are two Brazils--the"firstworld" modern archipelago where the rich lived behindwalled compounds, own several houses and apartments, and buy consumer items without regard for price. The rest of the country lives in the Third World--in poverty. Anthropologist Tobias Hecht applies careful, compassionate research and study to the urban dimension of lower class life. On par with Nancy Scheper-Hughes, the book brilliantly brings the tribulations and small triumphs of homeless children to life.

Book Description
Fighting in the Streets provides a comparative analysis of some of the most severe episodes of urban unrest that took place in twentieth-century America, including the 1919 Chicago Riot, the Detroit Riot of 1943, the Newark and Detroit Riots of 1967, the Miami Riot of 1980, and the 1992 Los Angeles Riot. Examining the patterns of death and destruction of property that occurred during these events, as well as historical evidence regarding struggles for housing, jobs, and political power among members of different racial/ethnic groups, this book makes the case for a general explanatory model of urban unrest as a product of rapid demographic change. Focusing at the neighborhood level, where demographic changes have their greatest impact, Fighting in the Streets posits that riot-related violence is most likely to take place in neighborhoods characterized by high levels of black/white segregation, poverty, unemployment, and rapid population turnover. Such a "profile" of the riot-prone neighborhood may enable policy makers to avert future violence through targeted economic and political intervention, building community institutions that integrate newcomers and natives. This book is particularly suited for classes in urban studies, race/ethnic relations, and collective behavior/social movements as well as public policy and planning.
Customer Reviews:
Incisive, fascinating.......2005-12-20
Prof Herman does a wonderful job tying the disparate threads of various ethnic riots. He does not pander or oversimplify. Highly recommended for students of the field.

Book Description
Many people in America think that gang violence is concentrated in the inner cities of New York, Los Many people in America think that gang violence is concentrated in the inner cities of New York, Los Angeles and other isolated metropolitan areas. They are mistaken, says Loren Christensen, a veteran Portland, Oregon, gang-enforcement officer. After completing Skinhead Street Gangs, Christensen went back to the streets to see what's happening with gangs, and what he found scared the hell out of him! He found that gangs are everywhere and are here to stay - in the big cities and small towns, in the suburbs and the rural areas, on both coasts and in the heartland. His research also showed that gangs are equal-opportunity destroyers. Their members - and victims - are white, black, Hispanic and Asian. His most disturbing discovery was that gangs are nastier than ever. Ten years ago gangbangers fought with fists, clubs and pistols. Now they have lots of incredible firepower, and they don't think twice about using it. Here, Christensen lets gang members, former gang members and street cops tell you in their own words how gangbangers think, why they are so violent, who they target and what (if anything) can be done to curb the growth of gangs in America.
Customer Reviews:
Chilling..........2007-06-14
Gangs are not only ubiquitous but growing, becoming more pervasive and deadlier despite society's best efforts to stamp them out. The author interviews current and former gang members, law enforcement officers, school officials, lawyers, social workers, and other experts to provide chilling insight into the minds of those who join street gangs. A quick and easy read, this provocative book provides terrific insight into gang culture and etiquette. Respect, reputation, and revenge are integral to gang life. For example, the "commandments of the 'hood" include: thou shalt handle thy business, get girls, get respect, get thy money on, carry a gat (gun), and be down for thy homeboy right or wrong, and thou shalt not snitch. This book is a fascinating and worthwhile read.

I did want to enjoy this book.......2006-05-20
...however, it actually made me quite pissed after the first two chapters.
I've always been interested in people that live very different lives than I do. The question I keep hunting for the answer to is WHY. Why have they become what they are, why are they thinking the way they do, why do they seem to have totally different values - in general, what makes them what they are? So, this book sounded like the right one for me.
Instead, it made me rather pissed. Mr. Christensen divides his book into chapters according to the racial background of different gangs. The first chapter is about gangs in general, about the basic forces behind a gangbanger's actions. The next two chapters are about black and Hispanic gangs. Now, what you get in the first three chapters is basically the SAME pieces of information repeated over and over again. You even get the very same testimonies by nameless bangers in the different subsections.
Since the author used to be a police officer himself and dealt with bangers, I did expect a lot more detailed, first person experiences - especially because most of the facts he collects about gangs in his book are only new to those that never tried to understand bangers' "deadly minds"... never even googled "street gangs". That is the reason I'm giving this book 3 stars after all - it could be a starting point for a newbie.
In the next two chapters he writes about white and Asian gangs, so at least there is some new information there compared to the continuous repetition in the first three chapters. However, it doesn't seem too professional at all for him to beging chapter four (about white gangs) with an intro STRICTLY about how to get his other book (which he "humbly believes is the most complete book on the subject"... eh) - he will even give you a complete URL.
There's a few photos scattered all over the book, but they don't do any good, since they are extremely blurry. There are ones that are supposed to show gang tattoos or hang signals and one can hardly make out the person's body at all.
If you make it to chapter six "Facts and Fiction about Youth Gangs", dividing chapters according to ethnicity will seem even more senseless than before. As a Fact Mr. Christensen states, "So-called black gangs are no longer all black, Hispanic gangs are more and more mixed with whites and blacks, and many Southeast Asian gangs are now a mix of Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong and even whites".
He hardly mentions female bangers and pretty much skips initiations, too.
So, this book is not going to give you some deep insight. However, if you're looking for some BASIC information on what gangs are about, you might enjoy it.
Chilling.......1999-11-17
This is the best and most complete book on street gangs I have read. Much of it is in the voices of gang members, police officers and others who work with gangbangers.
The book left me afraid and wondering if there is any hope for tha gang problem that has infected virtually every city in the country.
I highly recommend this book.

As sociologist Elijah Anderson shows in the detailed and devastating Code of the Street, the senseless crime in the inner city represents a complex, though ultimately self-defeating, set of social mores. These mores, called "codes," stress a hyperinflated sense of manhood through verbal boasts, drug selling, sexual prowess, and--ultimately--violence and death. "At the heart of the code is the issue of respect," Anderson writes, "loosely defined as being treated 'right' or being granted one's 'props' (or proper due) or the deference one deserves." Anderson reveals a world where unemployment is rampant, teenage pregnancy is common, and social and educational achievement is viewed as "acting white." Although Anderson states that racism is a major factor for this condition, he notes that this type of behavior is further exacerbated by modern economic and political forces, and that it has existed as far back as ancient Rome.
As an African American himself, Anderson moves through the middle- and lower-class Philadelphia neighborhoods with ease, interviewing a variety of subjects, all of whom deal daily with consequences of urban decay--from the high-achieving young woman who had to reject her poorer relatives to better herself, to the former delinquent who tries to go straight after returning from prison. For Anderson, these are the true heroes of Code of the Street: people who overcome the temptations of the streets to help create a better space for the next generation. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
Where the rule of law does not apply, survival depends on intimate knowledge of this powerful, inflexible etiquette that colors every human transaction. Inner-city black America often seems to be defined by random, senseless street violence. In fact, although violence is a salient feature of inner-city communities, its use is far from random; it is regulated through an informal but well-known code of the street. How you dress, how you talk, whether you make eye contact, your understanding of the pecking order-such crucial details can have life-or-death consequences, and young people are particularly at risk. As Elijah Anderson shows in this brilliant anatomy of the inner-city psyche, the code is a response to the lack of jobs that pay a living wage; to the stigma of race; to rampant drug use; to alienation and lack of hope. The police exercise no control here, and the individual's safety and sense of worth are defined by how much respect he can command in public; this deference is based on physical and psychological control and, always, on an implied threat of violence. The most powerful force counteracting the code and its reign of terror is the strong, loving, decent family, and we meet many heroic figures in the course of this narrative. Unfortunately, the culture of the street thrives and often defeats decency because it controls public spaces, so that individuals with higher, better aspirations are often entangled in the code and its self-destructive behaviors.
Customer Reviews:
An Interesting and Realistic Book.......2007-06-26
I'm not normally a fan of nonfiction but I really couldn't put this book down! Every section was authentic and interesting. It is another world.
Good stuff.......2007-03-29
I bought this book for an assignment and found that it was highly informative. I would suggest this book for anyone thinking about going into law enforcement or criminology.
A winner.......2006-11-05
Excellent book; I highly recommend. Extremely informative and insightful. A scholarly study written in plain language. It reveals the complexities of the subculture of street life and its terrorist rule in the neighborhoods it infiltrates. A must read for someone working in any aspect of criminal justice. - Corrections librarian.
A New Lens to See Through.......2006-11-01
I am so impressed with this book I can't believe it. Every page provided a new insight. As a white person I gained a whole new perspective on...well, everything, it seems like. Mr. Anderson does such a great job of giving an "inside look" into the inner city world, you really come away understanding a whole lot more.
I appreciated that Anderson laid the facts out without playing the blame game. His writing is objective but also compassionate; you can really see *individuals,* not just "black people." I closed the book thinking, "Well, I can't change everything, but with this knowledge I can sure make changes in myself, and at least that's a start." It takes a great book to provide that kind of power and inspiration. Just for that alone, I think every white person should read this book.
So, Bravo, Mr. Anderson! Please continue to write on the subject!
A very insightful book on inner city culture.......2006-08-25
This book is a study of inner city life in some of the really bad areas of Philadelphia. Its basic thesis is that the inner city culture is split between the majority who are decent and the large minority who are "street." He explains the origins and meaning of all of this very well.
Anderson is not the best writer in the world, and the book goes longer than it should. Bearing in mind that he is an academic, however, most of the book is pretty well written. The high points to me are his stories about individuals he studied. They really make the book come alive.
Anderson is a liberal, and that comes out now and again in his writing. I do not think that his ideology interferes much with his analysis and understanding, however. While the book has its liberal moments. it is basically a pretty solid book of analysis, written in an unusually personal and vivid way.

An average of six children per day were murdered in Colombia.......2002-07-14
Per capita killings of children in 1993 exceeded those in Brazil where the killing of black children in the streets captured world headlines. However, the killing, rape and torture of children in Colombia has never hit the global media radar screen until now. Robin Kirk painstakingly documents the abuse of children in Colombia. However, the most scandalous part of this book is that it clearly shows that a significant number of murders of children in Colombia is a direct responsibility of state forces. The Colombian government has dirty hands and has been unable to control the slaughterhouse mentality of criminal elements in the military and police. Although this book is nearly ten years old it is worth reading to see how only the rich and powerful have the exclusive use of justice in Colombia.

Book Description
What does it mean to be a child or an adolescent growing up on the streets or in a state institution? How do children define their everyday lives in the midst of global processes? This ethnographic study situates childhood and adolescence as social forms within the changing family and political structures of the complex urban world of Caracas, Venezuela.
The presence of youngsters on the streets of Caracas embodies social contradictions at the national level, and this book discusses how these contradictions are played out in an oil-producing nation afflicted with hyperinflation, generalized corruption, the deterioration of public services, increasing poverty, and violence. Vivid life stories told by street children themselves portray their relations with family and friends, as well as with people they encounter: police officers, journalists, social workers, and passersby at their local hangouts. The book also describes and analyzes the justice system and institutions for minors, illustrating the constant failures to respond to, contain, or lessen youth violence.
Many young people come from shantytowns to the streets of Caracas for a better life, and the author shows how they seek status and power through style, pursuing commodities of the global consumer market, from Nike shoes to cellular phones. Drawing on her ethnographic data and contemporary theories of power, control, and style, the author critiques the inequalities of the Venezuelan class structure and the oil boom’s failure to provide adequate social services for a great majority of the population.
