      Book Description

Communities of microscopic plant life, or phytoplankton, dominate the Earth’s aquatic ecosystems. This important new book by Colin Reynolds covers the adaptations, physiology and population dynamics of phytoplankton communities in lakes and rivers and oceans. It provides basic information on composition, morphology and physiology of the main phyletic groups represented in marine and freshwater systems and in addition reviews recent advances in community ecology, developing an appreciation of assembly processes, co-existence and competition, disturbance and diversity. Although focussed on one group of organisms, the book develops many concepts relevant to ecology in the broadest sense, and as such will appeal to graduate students and researchers in ecology, limnology and oceanography.

          Book Description

Blooms of toxic or harmful microalgae, commonly called "red tides", represent a significant and expanding threat to human health and fisheries resources throughout the world. The impacts of these "harmful algal blooms" range from illness and death of human consumers of shellfish or fish that have accumulated algal toxins to ecosystem alteration and mortalities of marine mammals and other animals.
Presented here is a state-of-the art review of all major topics relating to the ecology and physiology of harmful algal bloom species. The autecology of all major groups is covered in detail, and the ecophysiological processes and mechanisms that regulate their growth, bloom development, and toxin production are addressed as well.

            Book Description

A teaspoon of sea water can hold a soupy serving of a million phytoplankton! These tiny floating plants come in thousands of amazing variations. Invisible to the naked eye, phytoplankton are the source of our atmosphere, our climate, our ocean food chain, much of our oil supply, and more. Theyre also food for zooplankton, tiny animals that often look like weird life forms from outer space.

In this volume (another volume: Sea Soup: Zooplankton will be available in Fall 2000), Mary Cerullos text answers intriguing questions about these tiny drifters that have shaped our world, while Bill Curtsingers extraordinary photomicroscopy serves up tantalizing images of this sea soup. Many of the photos for this book were taken at Maines Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Science and the Darling Marine Center, using an Axiophot 2 research microscope donated by Carl Zeiss, Inc.

            Book Description

The interesting and fun activities in this teachers guide meet the challenge of relating tiny, microscopic organisms to the lives of children. Discover and explore answers to some strange questions. What is the recipe for Sea Soup? Are those tiny critters plants or animals, or maybe something else? Why do they look more like creatures from outer space than the organisms we know on land? What do giant clams, corals, whales, penguins, and humans have in common? How does the Sea Soup grow? What if it stops growing?

The inquiry-based activities range from designing and making a phytoplankter and collecting phytoplankton to designing an experiment for exploring what factors influence the growth of phytoplankton. The emphasis is on science, but where appropriate math, geography, language arts, and art are included. Each unit includes background information, objectives, a statement of how it addresses the National Science Education Standards, materials, procedures, references, and suggested websites. This book is the accompanying teacher's guide to two volumes: Sea Soup: Phytoplankton and Sea Soup: Zooplankton

5 out of 5 stars Top notch guide to marine plankton and invertebrate larvae.......2000-09-19

This book, following on the heels of DeBoyd Smith's 1st edition, presents a good selection of line drawings and information about the diversity of more common marine plankton and invertebrate larvae. While no guide to this group of organisms can really hope to be exhaustive in its coverage, this book presents a good overview of the kinds of organisms that are floating around out there.

This book is a great primer to the group. It is not, however, all that useful in doing taxonomic work, but it is a great tool for use in supporting laboratory work involving general identification of plankton. In order to do more specific taxonomic work, however, one needs access to more comprehensive taxonomic keys from the professional literature.

Still, this book would be a great addition to the library of any serious student of invertebrate zoology, marine biology, or oceanography.

                Book Description

Several cyanobacterial species can produce powerful toxins that provide a serious threat for water quality, other aquatic organisms, and human health. These harmful cyanobacteria are especially prominent in freshwater ecosystems, and are a major concern for water managers.

From a scientific perspective, there are many recent advances in this research area:
                - Owing to the scientific revolution in genomics, new molecular techniques have been developed that enable the detection of toxic cyanobacteria at a very early stage.
                - New laboratory culture techniques have enabled eco-physiological studies of toxin production at a detailed scale that was beyond reach until recently.
                - Remote sensing of freshwater cyanobacteria is a rapidly expanding field, owing to the increased spectral resolution of airborne data.
                - New computational techniques have led to advanced models on the population dynamics of cyanobacteria.

From a management perspective, recognition of the toxins produced by harmful cyanobacteria has recently led to new environmental policies with respect to toxic cyanobacteria in many western countries.

The purpose of this work is to provide an up-to-date overview of the advances in our knowledge of harmful cyanobacteria. The work is directed towards graduate students and scientists in aquatic microbiology, aquatic ecology, environmental toxicology, and water management, and academic professionals in water management and environmental policy.

"This is an outstanding volume that should be a 'must-see' reference for all scientists and environmental professionals who are interested in cyanobacterial ecology and water quality management." Val H. Smith, University of Kansas, USA

                  Book Description

This book deals with the lifestyles of phytoplankton, the microscopic plant life living in the open waters of lakes, ponds and rivers and makes frequent references to the phytoplankton of the sea. It reviews adaptations required of organisms to live their lives independently of solid surfaces and the different ways that these have been achieved. Chapters dealing with particular topics are arranged in approximately the order in which they become a problem to the organism: How can it stay up in the water? Can it gain sufficient light and nutrients? How fast can it grow under different conditions? And what are the results of sinking out, feeding by animals, attacks by parasitic fungi and bacteria? The final chapter assembles this information to show ways in which plankton changes with season and through much longer periods of time, contrasting the behaviours in different types of lakes. This book is important for two reasons: it is the first major book on the subject for some years and projects many recent research findings; and the approach departs from previous volumes in concentrating on needs and adaptive responses to them.

We used this guide to plan our 3 week trip to Australia because we were so impressed with the South America edition which we had used previously. It was very helpful and accurate regarding various costs. It even gives planning tips depending on how much time you have. It is definitely a good alternative to the Lonely Planet which I sometimes find the info to be outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to New Zealand.......2005-07-23

I was not familiar with this British travelguide series until I used this edition for my recent trip to New Zealand. The book is very easy to use, with pleasing layouts, and up-to-date and reliable restaurant recommendations of sites to see, hotels, restaurants, etc. The writer really showed his familiarity with NZ, and the writing was crisp and energetic. I had researched several guides to NZ (Fodors, Frommers, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide) before I left and found this one to be the best. I also looked into the Footprints guide to Australia and found it to be equally first-rate. I will definitely consider a Footprints guide again the next time I travel.
