Book Description
You can count on horse-crazy kids to be doing something horse-related, thinking about something horse-related, or planning something horse-related 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That's why Cindy A. Littlefield created the Kids' Book of Horse Games & Puzzles. If kids are going to spend their time horsing around, they might as well jump-start their creativity and boost their problem-solving skills at the same time.
The book is divided into five sections: Word Play, Picture Puzzles, Drawing, Fun and Games, and Brain Teasers. (All the answers are included.)
Take the "Horse and Pony Stall of Fame" challenge by matching up famous equines with their human or television character companions. Snuffle through the "Hungry as a Horse" quiz and see if you can find the names of 14 things horses like to eat hidden in a block of letters. Then break out your best drawing pencils and learn how to draw a horse's portrait in six easy steps.
Fun, horsey cartoons and illustrations adorn every page. And scattered throughout the book are horse riddles, bits of horse trivia, and quotes about horses.
Here, at last, is the perfect book for kids who love puzzles almost as much as they love horses.

Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction to Horses!.......2007-07-26
This book is written to young girls, but I read it so I would know at least as much as my daughter does about horses. It's easy reading and a good reference to have, especially if you plan on owning a horse at any time.
Great book for beginners.......2007-02-16
This book has information on every aspect of owning a horse. It's a great book for kids as well as adults. I highly recommend this book for people that want to get into horse ownership.
Missing Details.......2006-02-21
I agree with the review from "From School Library Journal." I did think that this book had excellent pictures and a lot of good information but did not think that it was complete.
The worming section particulary bothered me as it showed a picture of the worm lifecycle and said to "talk to your veterinarian." Considering how much information there is about worming meds this should have been more detailed. I also would have liked the author to strongly stress that a horse buyer should have taken EXTENSIVE lessons before rushing out to buy a horse. A parent buying a horse for a child that doesn't know the basics of horse care and riding (from working with read horses - not ones in books) is a recipe for danger and possibly disaster.
On a tangent, fans of the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls will be entertained with some of the photos as they appear to have come out of Riata's own book.
People I'd recommend this book to: a fourth to sixth grade girl - I think that they'd love it as a first "serious" reference!
Wonderful!.......2005-10-15
Kids who are interested in horses really need a mentor who is experienced in all aspects of the care and handling of horses. And they could certainly use Horse Care for Kids by Cherry Hill, a horse trainer and breeder. In the past, Hill has been a judge and taught courses in horse management and training. She is also the author of 24 equestrian books.
Horse Care for Kids discusses, in a simple and straight-forward manner, all of the essentials of equine care. It is a thorough book, written in an engaging manner that will appeal to young people.
Hill encourages parents to become involved and as knowledgeable as their children in the care of their horses (and she gives sound reasoning). She discusses body language and behavior, what to look for in a good horse, safety, clothing, grooming and health. She also describes through her writing, drawings and pictures, the parts of a horse, gaits, confirmation, breeds, markings and coloring.
If your child is interested in horses, Hill's book is a great beginning. It's informative and easy to read and provides great information for the beginner. As a child horse owner, I would have been thrilled to own Horse Care for Kids.
Armchair Interviews says: Horse Care for Kids is a great gift for that new or beginning horse owner and rider. We highly recommend!
Great beginner horse book for kids .......2005-07-23
This book has wonderful illustrations depicting how to halter a horse, body language of a horse, horse colors, grooming a horse, and many more practical things to teach you to become a responsible and successful horse or pony owner. It is an easy- to-read book with 116 very informational pages. I highly recommend this book for any child interested in horses, especially one who is thinking about owning a horse.

Book Description
Long ago, a lone little burro roamed the high cliffs of the Grand Canyon and touched the hearts of all who knew him: a grizzled old miner, a big-game hunter, even President Teddy Roosevelt. Named Brighty by the prospector who befriended him, he remained a free spirit at heart. But when a ruthless claim-jumper murdered the prospector, loyal Brighty risked everything to bring the killer to justice.
Brighty's adventures have delighted generations of readers, and he has become the symbol of a joyous way of life. Some people say that you can even see his spirit roving the canyon on moonlit nights-forever wild, forever free.
Customer Reviews:
Brighty -- Still a great read!.......2007-08-09
At age 54 I decided to add this book to my classic children's collection. I was delighted to find when I read it again after 43 years, it still was a charming, fun book from beginning to end!
Brighty Review.......2007-01-06
I ordered this book for my wife as we had just returned from the Grand Canyon and she had expressed interest in Brighty...she even bought a small stuffed Brighty. Anyway, the format of the book is really cute as it reminded me of books I read in grammer school. As I understand, the story is based on some level of fact. I have seen references to Brighty in the Grand Canyon Association news and in the Death in Grand Canyon book. It is a fun read and provides a little history of the Grand Canyon. Anyone with an interest in animals, the outdoors or the Grand Canyou will enjoy this book.
Another memory........2006-11-03
Another great book for children. It has been around a long time and was a favorite of our children. I purchased it for our grandchildren.
enjoyed the book.......2006-06-18
I just discovered this delightful book. I find it ironic to read comments about burros being destructive......perhaps we humans ought to look in the mirror. We have been far more destructive to this national treasure than any burro.
His Free Spirit Haunts the Canyon.......2005-04-19
Set in the Grand Canyon during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency this charming tale introduces readers to an unlikely animal protagonist: a wild burro who lives alone, but has been partially tamed by kind men. Rescued first by the Old Timer, then from a cougar's wounds by the North Rim's resident lion-killer, Brighty experiences the gamut of human behavior toward animals and each other: from the absurd, the selfish, the ambitious, and even the criminal. As the only witness to the evil schemes of a thieving murderer, Brighty relies on his own natural instincts which warn him about vicious Jake Irons.
Ruthless Irons murders the kindly and trusting prospector in order to obtain his copper mine. The sheriff frets for several years that the heinous crime goes unsolved and that the murderer remains unpunished. But Uncle Jimmy Owens' moon-lily tea helps trick a confession from the cruel scoundrel-with Brighty as a non-verbal but wary witness. Even in his lonely pilgrimages down to Bright Angel Creek the burro has many adventures on his own; he even crosses the Colorado River twice on a bridge which he helped men construct. Will he one day prefer to live
with his own kind as king of the herd? Or Be satisfied to be honored and befriended by human beings? Teddy Roosevelt looms larger than life as his personality is interwoven with Marguerite Henry's fictitious characters. For it was this charismatic president who devoted his efforts to setting aside the wilds of the Grand Canyon in the form of a national park.
Readers rejoice at Brighty's free spirit, which is said to prance through the gorges and trails which he cut en route to his beloved North Rim. This gentle burro epitomizes the youth and vigor of the primeval canyon-showing how humans and animals should cooperate to preserve America's natural wilderness. Delightfully illustrated by Wesley Dennis, this book is for outdoors enthusiasts and animal lovers of all ages.

ok book.......2007-07-16
if your little one loves horses this is a cute book, all about jusdging from the way you look and not what you can do. good for the little ones.
Enchanting Story, Beautiful Illustrations.......2007-03-29
This book was a favorite of mine when I was growing up, and I am so happy to see it still in print! The story is lovely, and the illustrations are even better. Children, especially little girls who long to share their lives with a pony, will love this book. I've saved my copy for my own children to cherish as I did.
Gorgeous.......2007-01-17
This is a sweet story about a little pony that is ignored by people because he is not a beautiful horse. He feels very lonely and wishes that the children could ride him. Finally he is able to serve them and gains their trust. This simple story is accented by absolutely beautiful illustrations by Jan Brett. My four year old brother is sensitive to the quality and beauty of them. This is one of those classic children's books which is appealing to any age and will charm no matter how many times one reads it.
Wonderful Story and Illustrations!.......2006-11-04
I ordered this for my 5 yr. old daughter because we love Jan Brett books. We have a large library, but she repeatedly picks this story when asked to choose some for reading time. The illustrations are beautiful and there is a good lesson for children to learn.
Fitz and the Beautiful Horses.......2005-08-29
This is an older book by Jan Brett and so beautiful...she is a marvelous author/illustrator...I had to return one of these as it came with the front cover streaked in some sort of black stuff...

Simply A Great Book!!! - a review of "Little Black, A Pony".......2006-03-21
Just add me to the pack of people who loved this book as a child, and who are now reading it to their own children.
One of the things I want to add to the accolades is that this makes a good book for children to read. It is particularly satisfying because it has a good story -- something that is sometimes lacking in beginning readers.
As far as level I would say that it is at a first grade level which is to say that the print is still fairly large, but that there are more sentences per page than the very beginning readers are used to.
Big Red got back up on the
bank.
I tried and tried to get there too.
But I could not.
My feet were cold.
My hands were cold.
I was cold all over.
"Help! Help!" I called.
But Big red could not help me.
Five Stars. Classic story with wonderful artwork.
Children, Responsibility and Friendship.......2003-12-22
10 Star First Reader for children just learning the value of friendship and the feelings of others. Ideal for learning compassion, how deeply felt are hurt feelings, and how to fix them. Weighs the importance of ego vs humility, easily discernable and also appeals to a child's sense of ineptitude which arises naturally from his or her vulnerability as a child. Always a "first choice" if it hasn't been read in a while, and always a great pick for instilling confidence on difficult days, reminding both parents and adults that everyone is special, and that everyone has value, and can be productive and useful. A wonderful story of intimacy and rescue to which children instantly relate and appreciate, setting a foundation for lifelong compassion in the dignity of others, and respect for their emotions.
Lovely Memories.......2003-09-29
This book was one of my first reads in the elementary school library. Little Black, should be in everyone's library. Very good illustrations. Easily read to little children. One of my better memories of childhood books and now hard to find.
A Gem.......2003-09-24
I found this book while going through a collection of books that belonged to my Grandmother - a former elementary school teacher. I immediately showed it to my 3 year old son who LOVES horses. We read this book several times a week. It is hands down, his favorite. The book is written in such a way that it holds a child's attention endlessly. My son gets a wide array of expressions on his face as I read it to him and he looks at the neat pictures. It is too bad that this book is no longer in print. Books written like this nowadays are few and far between. A favorite, a classic, a keepsake!
Walter Farley the author of THE BLACK STALLION!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-08-02
I have this book called "Little Black, A Pony" & Walter Farley wrote this book & he is the author of a book called The Black Stallion series which was The Black Stallion & The Black Stallion Returns & others.
The illustrations in this book are illustrated by James Schucker & this is Beginner Books A division of Random House & the cover has a picture of a boy feeding Little Black an apple & the kid feeding Little Black has a red sweater & a white shirt on.
When the kid trys Big Red his friends stopped to look at him & he goes by Little Black but didn't look at him.
When he jumps Big Red, they go by Little Black & his head was down & he was very sad.
The part where his leg got stuck in the tree, the kid pulls his leg out.
When the kid rides Big Red on the ice, he goes to get Little Black who was running away & tried the ice but, the ice couldn't hold Big Red & Crack! Splash! down the kid went into the cold water. So then, the kid holds onto Little Black's tail & the ice held the two of them & Little Black saved him.
So one night all of his friend come to see Little Black.
They were all happy as him.
"Little Black," he says, "there is no horse like you. You are the best of all! And I will ride you only from now on."
This is a great book & I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was my favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The pictures reminded me of Baddeck & other places!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Book Description
"If you're on bareback you're with the horse... The feeling is youse are together, youse are clicking, you know what I mean, but if you're on a saddle youse are floating on a lump of leather you're not on a horse, but when you are on bareback it's a total feeling, you know. You are with the horse all the way and you feel every move that the horse is making going through that park. You might as well just sit on the ground and fucking run along the ground on you all fours on a saddle cos that's what it's like. When you are bareback you are bonding, you are with the horse, you're touching each other. I think that's the best but I couldn't even afford a saddle, I wouldn't even go there, put it that way, cos I couldn't afford a saddle, no way."--Natalie Smith
Over the past decade, an extraordinary horse culture has evolved in the housing estates that surround Dublin. Teenagers from the families of the poor and often unemployed have been keeping their ponies on patches of green in the city wastelands. Once a month a horse fair is held at the city center. Perry Ogden has made formal portraits of these kids and their ponies in an open studio. The results document an endangered tribe.
Renowned journalist, Fintan O'Toole, further introduces us to the lifestyles of these bands of kids on horseback, and traces their connection to Ireland's ethnic nomads, the Travellers.
