Book Description
Roberto Clemente, Minnie Minoso, Orlando Cepeda, Miguel Tejada and Jose Santana. These men are the immortals, the pioneers, the famous, the soon-to-be famous and the forgotten ones. They know that home is everything-home is the barrio where they improvised baseball on unpaved streets and sandlots; home is home plate where the batter stands waiting for the next pitch, where runs are scored and games are won; and home is the magical ballparks of major league baseball where they dream to play. Villegas' wonderful full-color photographs, with Breton's companion bilingual text, reveal the essence of the Latino ballplayers' journey: the struggles, dis-appointments and the sometimes enormous successes. The book features the journey of Miguel Tejada, All-Star shortstop for the Oakland Athletics, from his barrio in the Dominican Republic through his 2002 breakout year. The photographs let us witness the barrios where the dreaming begins, the young dreamers who will never leave their home, the major league facilities where young players learn English and gringo baseball, the forgotten players playing semi-pro in the Bronx and keeping their dreams alive, Latinos struggling through the foreign world of the minor leagues, the major leaguers and the immortals.
Preface by Orlando "the Baby Bull" Cepeda from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Lifetime .297 batting average, 379 homeruns, MVP 1967 with the Cardinals, Hall of Fame 1999.
Jose Luis Villegas is a long-time sports photographer and contributor to Edward James Olmos' photo-anthology Americanos. With Marcos Breton, he received the Alicia Patterson Fellowship for their collaboration on Latino baseball, culminating with Away Games: The Life and Times of a Latin Ballplayer (Simon & Schuster, 1999). Breton collaborated with Chicago Cubs star Sammy Sosa on Sosa: An Autobiography (Warner Books, 2000). Breton also contributed to the Subway Series Reader (Simon & Schuster, 2000). Villegas and Breton live in Sacramento where they work for the Sacramento Bee.
Customer Reviews:
Best book I ever read!.......2007-05-04
This is the best book I ever read! Marcos Breton is an amazing writer and historian. Usually, all you ever hear about is Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, but now we get to hear about Roberto Clemente, Fernando Valenzuela, and Jorge Posada too! Viva Baseball! This book is a valuable addition to any library.
Enthusiastically recommended for the fans of Latino players.......2003-06-12
In Home Is Everything, Marcos Breton presents story vignettes of Latinos involved in American Baseball, told in both English and Spanish, and enhanced with full-color photographs by Jose Luis Villegas. Slices of daily life training and competing in this great sport, as well as the names and brief profiles of remarkable and dedicated people, comprise this celebration of baseball which is enthusiastically recommended for the fans of Latino players.
A piece of Art!.......2003-02-13
This book is very well photographed and written. The photos are stunning and colorful as well as informative and narrative. Not your stanard picture book, this is much better and will have a longer shelf life as the players are legendary. A must have book for the photographer, the sports fan and the Latino communities around America.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
A melancholic memoir of saying goodbye to the familiar Road trips, drunken concerts, and late-night make-out sessions all swirl together in this coming-of-age graphic novel by King Cat cartoonist John Porcellino. Tackling the pain and uncertainty of the pivotal summer before college, Porcellino's sad and beautiful story is drawn in his sincere, minimalist style. Deceptively and charmingly simple, Perfect Example is a collection of Porcellino's self-published King Cat comics, which have won over thousands of readers with their honesty, empathy, and sincerity.

emotionally potent.......2006-12-13
i am usually put off by matisse-like drawings in a comic format, but once you get past that, the story and characters draw you in. john p. was a very mature teenager, and i love the fluidity with which he explores his emotions. the graphic memoirs that i've been exposed are usually very boring: boy loses girl, walks around in a narcissistic slump for a couple of years while reminiscing about the lost girl, then meets some chick one night, has sex, is happy, end of story. john p., however, overcomes his own fears and faces reality. he shows how he changed his perspective when something that could be perceived as "negative" occurred, and you experience the breakthrough he had as you relive it through his memorable tale.

John Porcellino, Perfect Example (Highwater Books, 2000)
I'm going to open this with a comment that's going to strike a lot of people as odd: I'm getting kind of sick of the graphic-novel-as-memoir thing.
I don't expect people will find it odd that I am (I rather suspect a lot of people are), but that I use it to open this particular review, as Porcellino's book predates just about every graphic-novel-as-memoir I've reviewed in the past two years. I only stumbled across it in 2005 because (a) a much larger distro company picked it up, and (b) Porcellino has been getting a lot of press for his second book, Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man. When I saw the title on this one, I asked myself if it could possibly be related to the Husker Du song of the same name, and immediately placed it on hold. When I get it, I open it up, and there's a Bob Mould lyric staring me in the face. I was as close to genetically predisposed to liking this book as I could possibly be; Porcellino is roughly the same age as I am (a few months younger, if memory serves), and we grew up listening to the same music, suffering the same growing pains at the same time, all that sort of thing. I mean, in the world of memoirs, this is something I should really have identified with. And I rush to add that I don't blame John Porcellino for my not really connecting with it (nor my own upbringing).
Drawn and Quarterly picked this up and reprinted it in October of 2005-- well after many of the big names in graphic-novel-memoir had published (Satrapi, David B., Clowes, Pekar, Thompson, etc. were all quite well established) and right on the heels of the best of the bunch to be published to date (Charles Burns' superlative Black Hole). Instead of being in the vanguard of the movement, it feels as if Porcellino is a very small fish in a very big pond. It's not his fault. His drawings are almost shocking at first, given their (for lack of a better term) naivete, but once you get used to it, his characters (who often echo Charles Schulz, and if you're going to copy a master, you might as well copy the master) come off the page quite nicely; in fact, they have as much of an emotional resonance, at times, as those in any of the other, bigger-name memoirs. Where Porcellino stumbles is that he fails to sustain the emotional pitch; the showing is too often broken up by stretches of telling.
It's a good book, just not a great one. I'm still looking forward to Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man. ***
One of the best things around.......2001-07-02
John Porcellino's Perfect Example is exactly what comics need. It's got a sense of emotion and angst and beauty and fun that I frankly wish more people would aspire to instead of trying to be clever. Perfect Example isn't clever -- it's funny, it's genuine, it's beautiful, and it's moving. Check it out if you've ever been (1) sad and didn't know why (2) into skateboarding (3) on an impromptu a road trip (4) into Husker Du (5) a teenager.
Plus, I can't speak highly enough of Highwater Books' presentation of the material, originally printed in black and white in John P.'s excellent King-Cat Comics and Stories zine. It's gorgeously put-together with fine paper and multi-colored inks (as with Highwater's also excellent presentation of Brian Ralph's Cave-In). Highwater makes gorgeous books and this is certainly one of their best.
One of my favorite comics, I can't speak highly enough of it.
great, naive, zenlike coming-of-age book.......2000-10-18
If you've ever been an angst-ridden, depressed teenager with out-of-touch parents, this book will resonate with you. Even if you've only experienced tinges of these things, or had friends who did, Porcellino's book will say something special. It is charmingly illustrated, and nicely written. A well-crafted book. His King-Cat Comics and Stories are worth a look too, if you can find them. Listening to his old Denver band Felt Pilotes while reading this book provides the compleat Porcellino experience.

No Eraser Needed: Mistake Proofing Your Business.......2007-01-24
If you have had the good fortune to read Ron Buckley's "Winning In A Highly Competative Manufacturing Enviornment" you will remember that one of the cornerstones to winning is quality. And quality or more specifically, Mistake Proofing, is what Buckley and daughter Candace-Lynn decipher in "No Eraser Needed: Mistake Proofing Your Business".
As with "Winning" the Buckleys use their "real world" experiences along with practical problem solving tools and techniques such as Cause and Effect Diagram, FMEA, and Brainstorming with simple explanations that the reader can easily understand and begin using immediately.
When most people think of quality, Six Sigma almost immediately comes to mind. Far too many of todays "gurus" proclaim that the only way to solve your company's problems is to launch a daunting GE or Honeywell style Six Sigma program. The Buckleys sound wisdom shines through as they admonish their readers to "start with a Mistake Proofing program and when you collect from the payoff of your efforts here move on to Six Sigma, but don't think for a minute that you cannot compete without it."
Mistake Proofing is a series of tools and techniques designed to simplify business processes and the simplest way for your company to win with quality is to apply the lessons put forth in "No Eraser Needed: Mistake Proofing Your Business."
Make no mistake about it - this book is a winner!!!.......2007-01-03
Mr. Buckley states in his book "no work happens until the tool hits the material" so this is not going to be a book review in the traditional sense. This is going to be a report on results. My company relies heavily upon the automotive industry and that industry has not been flourishing for the last few quarters. By applying the techniques and concepts covered in this book and Mr. Buckley's previous book (Winning in a Highly Competitive Manufacturing Environment), I was able to generate savings equivalent to 1% of our top line sales without any workforce reductions.
I work for a privately held company so I can't be more specific, but, let me leave you with some advice - buy the books, read them and put the concepts into practice - you'll be glad you did.
Quick Read-Practical Ideas.......2006-12-22
"No Eraser Needed" is a simple but great guide for a mistake-proofing program. The Cross-functional, self-directed team concept is truly best process to maximize productivity in any business. The examples of mistake proofing is laid out very well, easy to understand and apply them.
An easy read filled with practical ideas.......2006-11-30
This book is filled with practical ideas to reduce unnecessary and costly mistakes. It provides a framework for approaching the elimination of mistakes. It's an easy read, and everyone can identify with the examples provided. Maybe most importantly, it focuses on engaging everyone in the enterprise in the hunt to root out mistakes, which builds teamwork and pride in the business.
Golden Opportuntiy for Any Business.......2006-11-30
"No Eraser Needed" is a fantastic guide for anyone wishing to establish or enhance a mistake-proofing program in any business. The book not only provides real world examples in both an industrial and office setting, but details type of person you should consider appointing to lead the program. Training guidelines are provided including an actual pitch that was used to train employees within a company. The book is also written in a style that allows the book to be distributed throughout any level of the organization and easily understood by all readers. I also agree with the authors' approach of training everyone, as the more minds in the business that think from a mistake-proofing perspective, the fewer the problems that will ever occur. The book also has a bonus section on cross-functional self-directed work teams, which, when applied properly (and these authors detail the proper approach) can help shift the culture of a business that has stifled the ideas and ownership needed from within the business to stay agile in today's ever-changing business world. I strongly recommend this book for anyone at any level in the organization that wishes to implement or accentuate a mistake-proofing program.
