Highpoint Adventures.......2007-05-25
This book and the references it makes, particularly to websites, will give you accurate and fun information about getting to the highest point in each of the fifty states. There is useful general information about hking, and each of fifty descriptions is excellent. If you buy the book and join the club, you will have something to do on vacations for years to come.
A guide to my favorite hobby.......2006-12-22
Highpointing is a great way to see all 50 states and get a little exercise (or a LOT of exercise in some cases), and this book is the perfect guide. I have climbed 22 Highpoints and own 4 Highpointing books. I would definitely consider this my favorite of the 4. I would still recommend owning more than one Highpointing book, but like I said, this is definitely my favorite. This one also seems to be the quickest revised and the best kept up to date. Though I suppose you can always get updates on highpointing very easily off of www.highpointers.org.
A Great Gift.......2006-08-20
This is the second copy I have purchased as a gift. Also I have one that was a gift to me. The book is outstanding for the hiker/traveler. My copy is dog-eared from all the attention it gets. It is well organized and accurate in its descriptions and directions.
Highpointing: Adventure and Great Family Fun.......2005-01-25
After thru-hiking the AT, my wife decided she wanted to go to the highest point in at least the continimerous 48 states (plus Hawaii as a reward). I bought a membership to the Highpointers Club and a copy of this book. We've used it to summit 13 states so far including easy drive-ups like Florida and Arkansas as well as challenges like Colorado (second highest point in the lower-48) and New Mexico.
While the book isn't a detailed hiking guide, it does contain information that is absolutely necessary to reach certain highpoints, especially those on private property. Additionally, the book contains a list of local highlights and interesting sites to see.
P.S. Our favorite highpoint, so far, is Kansas' Mount Sunflower!
This one has it all.......2004-09-04
Excellent guidebook. Provides everything you need in a few concise pages for each "mountain": Location, directions, summary statistics and comparisons, maps, alternate routes, nearby attractions, and human interest. The hiking distance and vertical elevation charts for each route are instantly helpful. The absence of errors is truly amazing for a book category that is continuously travel directions, distances, and routing. This book is so reliable that I have occasionally gone into the backcountry without procuring the mandatory real map. I own many dozens of mountain guidebooks--this may be the best for quick lookup of needed information! It is even a very convenient page size for fitting into a day pack. The authors have made these journeys a much simpler task compared to the days of the Frank Ashley book.

This book has taken me places..... literally........2006-12-09
I've climbed 22 highpoints and had this book with me every step of the way. The information provided is invaluable, though I would agree that the maps aren't the best. I love this book , but I must say I have recently purchased "Highpoint Adventures : The Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints", and find myself using that book more often for my recent Highpointing endeavors. I would not want to go on any highpointing adventure without both of the actually. I own 4 Highpointing books and find useful information in all of them. If you want to seriously take up Highpointing, I recommend owning at least two Highpointing books since they all have excellent information and some are better written for certain highpoints than others are. Especially since most Highpoints are quite a ways off the beaten trail (so to speak). If I had to pick just two, it would be defintely "Highpoint Adventures : The Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints" by Diane and Charlie Winger, and either this one ("Highpoints Of The United States" by Don Holmes)or "Fifty State Summits" by Paul Zumwalt. I personally own all three. For you thrifty people out there, I noticed you can by this one and "Highpoint Adventures : The Complete Guide to the 50 State Highpoints" by Diane and Charlie Winger together at a discounted price right here on Amazon.
other reviewer is an idiot.......2004-08-27
i havent seen the book, im just saying that, as anybody looking at a highpoint book should know, borah peak is in idaho, and that montanas highpoint is granite peak, and denali is definitly the most diffucult considering it can take a month and your elevation gain can reach 20000 feet.
AVERAGE REFERENCE.......2000-09-25
I don't know why Don Holmes did so well in trail descriptions and then installed such poorly illustrated maps. Many look hand-drawn. He has cleverly added though interesting info including special conditions, historical and natural history notes to each area. I give this book a "c".
Excellent guide to the highest points of the fifty states.......2000-07-11
Don Holmes has provided us with an excellent guide to the highest points in each of the fifty states. He gives route directions, trail descriptions, alternate routes, and a set of references for each state.
Some of the references are to web sites. For instance, there are two good web sites devoted to the highpoints: highpointers.org, and americasroof.com (neither uses the www prefix). Holmes' book can be used to even greater advantage when combined with the information available on the web. I am happy to report that the people who control the access to Jerimoth Hill in Rhode Island (the Wide-place-in-the-road State) have been convinced by the Highpointers Club to put up their shotguns on four days of the year to allow access to the highpoint. I suppose that we should be grateful - grateful that so many of the natural landmarks in the United States are held open for the public by government ownership.
The book's subject has presented me with some unanswered questions. Why do many states celebrate their highpoints with monuments while some others ignore them? It cannot be a regional issue. Pennsylvania has surrounded theirs with a park while nearby Maryland leaves it to a small but dedicated group of individuals from West Virginia to mark a trail and maintain the highpoint.
Why are so many of the highpoints near the boundaries of their states? I suppose that in the midwest where the land is flat and the slope is uphill toward the continental divide, the highpoints can be expected to cluster on the western edges of their states. However, many of the eastern points lie on state boundaries. Perhaps the mountain ridges helped to define those boundaries.
Finally, what attracts people to highpoints? Why is the summit of Mt. Elbert so crowded while nearby Mt. Massive is relatively ignored. I did find local residents on Mt. Katahdin and also Wheeler Peak who make annual trips to the summit of their highest peak. Certainly, the pursuit of highpoints does provide an excuse for traveling to new places. I would never have gone to Kenton if it were not for Black Mesa. It was worth the trip. I suppose that you cannot visit all fifty of the highpoints without also visiting all fifty states.
Excellent guide to the state highpoints.......2000-06-15
I started finding my way to state highpoints before I knew of this book. Many of the trailheads for hiking to state summits are in obscure locations. Even those with drive-up routes can be difficult to find. This book is an excellent guide. However, approaches do change from time to time. There are now two web sites that provide updated information. Get the book, but also consult the web before you go.
What is the most difficult state highpoint to reach? Is it Alaska's Mt. McKinley/Denali at 20.320 ft or Colorado's Mt. Elbert at 14,433 ft? Perhaps Montana's remote Borah Peak? No, it is Rhode Island's Jeremoth Hill, 812 ft. While the governments and people of most states have marked their highpoints in some special way, Rhode Islanders have taken great pains to keep visitors out. The highpoint is surrounded by privately owned property decorated with No Trespassing - No Visitors signs. You would think that a state that is little more than a wide place in the road would do more to be friendly to tourists. Contrast this with Kansas where the private owners of Mt. Sunflower have built an outdoor sculpture garden and picnic area for their highpoint.
Book Description
This guidebook, packed with pictures and maps, will lead you on a quest. Be the first (besides the author) to bag the highest point of each county of New York Statethere are 62 to be conquered. Some are barely molehills that can be driven by; others are significant mountain peaks that require an all-day climb. All promise the exhilaration of new discoveries. Can you name the highest point of the county where you live? Chances are good that you'll be wrong. As Gary Fallesen researched the summits he repeatedly came across experts who steered him wrong. Local belief often differs from factual reality. In this book you'll learn not only where the real Peak Experiences are, but how to get there. Fallesen delved into the history of each high point as well. With his guidance you'll meet the people populating the high points today and at the peaks in history.
Customer Reviews:
Great read about hiking those "boutique" peaks........2001-06-05
This is a great collection of hikes and stories that prove once again that 4000 footers are not the only adventures waiting to be had. New Yorkers are so fortunate to have so many wild and unspoiled places to get away from it all. If you like hiking for the sake of hiking (or even if your "counting" peaks) this is a fun book. Meeting people along the trail is always adventurous and filled with suprises. Those shared experiences are an essential part of these stories. It makes me want to grease up my boots, grab Gary's book, and get out there.
Top notch guide to New York peaks!.......2000-10-25
This is an excellent guide to hiking the highest peaks in the 62 counties of New York State. The author Gary Fallesen started his quest thinking it would take a few months. As he searched for the highest natural peaks county by county he discovered that in many cases the information was not known! He ended up spending hours interviewing, and researching to determine the highest peak often getting mixed information. The result of his work is "Peak Experiences". Time may show that Fallesen missed a higher peak but in the meantime "Peak Experiences" offers an extraordinary body of work to make the trip more pleasurable! The book includes many tips for the traveler. It covers each summit with interesting personal antecdotes of the people Fallesen met and/or the authors thoughts. This folksy sharing makes the journey real and Fallesen's book much more than the typical tour guide! But Fallesen includes the nitty gritty too. In Peak Experiences you will find detailed maps including the best approach to the peak, season recommendations, visitor accomodations, gear guide, trip planning, the view and even a sweat index of the effort entailed! The author also includes a checklist to note your personal high point accomplishment and a place at the end of each section to make notes. The book is nicely sized to tuck in a backpack for constant referral. A must have for hiking New York summits!
A terrific guide enhanced with a wealth of pictures & maps........2000-09-07
Peak Experiences is a traveler friendly county-by-county guidebook specifically designed for anyone wanting to hike the highest summits in the state of New York. Enhanced with a wealth of pictures, maps, and regional information, author Gary Fallesen's comprehensive text touches on approaches, trail markings, the expected views, the origins of peak names, visitor accommodations, nearby activities, and sources of essential trip planning information. If you are bound for a hike in the New York high country, begin with a copy of Gary Fallesen's Peak Experiences!

A classic.......2002-07-12
Yes, it's a bit outdated -- but this is THE classic book on Highpointing. Paul Zumwalt used his skills as a surveyor for USGS to find many of the more obscure state highpoints, and writes in a warm and enjoyable manner about his trips with his wife, Lila.
Paul just turned 90, and still attends Highpointers conventions and climbs to the highpoints.
So, buy this book to enjoy some history. If you want the most recent information, Highpoint Adventures by the Wingers seems to be the most up to date. Start a library of highpointing books!
GOOD OVERVIEW ONLY.......1999-07-13
I RECENTLY BOUGHT THIS BOOK IN MY QUEST TO CLIMB ALL 50 STATES HIGHEST PEAKS. ALTHOUGH IT HAS A LIST AND SUMMARY OF ALL THE PEAKS, SOME OF THE INFORMATION IS INCOMPLETE AND/OR OLD. THIS IS PRIMARILY TRUE OF THE ROADS AND ROUTES LEADING UP TO THE CLIMB ITSELF. I HAVE CLIMBED SEVERAL OF THE PEAKS IN THE BOOK AND FOUND THE INFORMATION HELPFUL BUT BY NO MEANS COMPLETE. THE PRIMARY REASONS ARE THAT THE AUTHOR USES OLD ROUTE INFORMATION AND HAS NOT BEEN ON THE PEAKS HIMSELF IN SOME CASES FOR OVER 10 YEARS. THIS BOOK IS A GOOD PLACE TO START YOUR QUEST, BUT YOU MAY WANT TO GET MORE UP TO DATE INFORMATION BEFORE SETTING OUT ON YOUR TREK. (THIS REFERS TO THE 1998 EDITION 4-B)

Great book - but get the newer edition.......2002-08-04
This is a terrific guidebook, but you're missing out on a LOT of updates and additional information by buying this "pocket" edition (the 1st edition published in 1999) instead of the 2nd edition published in 2002. The new version has about twice as many photos, updated maps where things have changed, updates and additional contact information (phone numbers, websites), elevation profile maps, and profiles of people who were some of the "founders" of the hobby of Highpointing (Jack Longacre and Paul Zumwalt).
So do another search for "Highpoint Adventures" and look for the newer version. Or get both (the little one for your backpack and the new one for enjoying a good read & planning your trip).
The Pocket Bible of Highpointing.......2002-07-30
My wife Chrissy gave me this book as a gift. Since I received it, I am rarely without it. The directions, descriptions, and information provided with regard to the highpoints are excellent. This is my bible to highpointing. The book fits perfectly inside my back pack, and I cannot imagine highpointing without it. My only suggestion for improvement would be the addition of exact latitude/longitude coordinates for each high point.
The highpoint guidebook you should choose.......2002-07-27
This handy dandy pocket highpoint book is the best I've seen. I have several highpoint guide books and this is the most accurate. I have climbed 46 highpoints and I am in the process of climbing them again with my family...27 so far. I am using Winger's book on my second climbs. There were times that I noticed I went the wrong way on the first climb, however were very clear with Winger's book. I noticed the directions to the trailheads were very accurate and easy to follow. My kids enjoy reading the little green book...even my 5 year old. There is also so much extra, good to know, information in this book.
It is by far the best guide book for the 50 highpoints that is out there. I highly recommend it...you won't regret it.
A must-have for the library of all serious highpointers !!.......2000-07-09
I have the Holmes and Zumwalt highpoint guides, and while both are invaluable in their own way (Zumwalt - the topo maps; Holmes - the history and local lore), the Wingers have come up with a guidebook that is small enough to take along on hikes, can fit in the glovebox, has all the latest info on routes etc., and is quaint, with things to do and see while in the area.
3 cheers to Charlie & Diane!
Book Description
A Roadfood™ Cookbook
For five years in a row, The Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia, 40 minutes east of Atlanta, has been voted best small town restaurant in the South by the readers of Southern Living magazine. Billie and Louis Van Dyke say that no one is allowed to leave hungry, and certainly no one should after feasting on a variety of Southern salads, meats, vegetables, breads and desserts and, of course, sweet tea, the "Champagne of the South," and lemonade. Housed in a gloriously restored southern mansion, The Blue Willow Inn is home to Southern hospitality and charm at its best.
The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook offers delicious Southern recipes, vintage pictures from the early days of Social Circle, and fascinating anecdotes about the restaurant. It's a book that's wonderful for reading or for cooking.
The greatest restaurants in America are its wonderful independent regional restaurants. And there are no greater experts on America's regional restaurants than Michael and Jane Stern. "Coast to coast," said the New York Times, "they know where to find the freshest lobster rolls, the fluffiest pancakes, the crispiest catfish." Rutledge Hill Press is launching a new series of Roadfood™ Cookbooks, each with recipes, pictures, and the history of one of America's greatest regional restaurants.
Customer Reviews:
First impression of Southern Cooking.......2007-10-01
An old roommate of mine was born in the South and she used this cookbook a lot. She made fried okra, black eyed peas and I thought both items were very successful and tasted yummy. This book was my first impression of Southern Cooking, so therefore I don't know how it compares with other southern cooking. It is all I believed it would be: lots of meat, lots of fat and lots of mayonnaise. Though I think I will avoid most of the mayo salads, I will be attempting to make some of the more traditional southern recipes at some point.
For those of us who have never tasted authentic southern food before, I think this book does a good job of presenting the basics. The other comments that this book has many "recipes every Southerner should know" makes me believe that it is a fantastic book for those of us who have no idea of what that includes.
This book is definately not for the fat concious chef and it doesn't adapt well to "low-fat" substitutions.
Great recipes for "old favorites".......2007-05-31
This is the best cookbook. My mother does not have recipes written down for potato salad or meatloaf, etc. She just adds a little of this and that. Well I needed a cookbook for these favorite southern dishes. It has become the most used cookbook in my kitchen. I love it!
A review from a True Southerner.......2006-12-20
I just received this book and am giving it to my mother-in-law as a Christmas present. After flipping through it, and reading quite a few excerpts out loud to my husband, I just wanted to give my impression of the recipes.
I was quite impressed with the 'true southern flavor' of this book. Having been raised in eastern NC, I have been eating "Southern Cuisine" all my life, and am quite frankly fed up with all the "southern" cookbooks that I see on the shelves. They all seem to put weird ingredients in the dishes just to make them photograph better, or to appeal to the mass markets. This cookbook tells it like it is -- no low-fat, vegetarian dishes. All the veggies have fat-back in them, and most have butter and cheese added. Most of the congealed salads have graced my family's table over the years.
For the reviewers that have critized this as a full-fat, Cheese-Whiz, Cream of XXX soup, cookbook -- I say yes, you are correct. But these recipes are time-tested, good, basic recipes to feed your family on.
If you are looking for good authentic Southern recipes for your table, this is a great place to start. The recipes are simple, but not boring, and the instructions are very clear.
As a side note, the stories are a great read too!
Back in grandma's kitchen.......2006-11-14
I grew up less than an hour from Social Circle. All of these recipes took me back home, back to my grandma's kitchen. I have tried several of the recipes and they tasted just like my grandma's. The history and stories included in the book made you feel like you were there. I will definitely visit The Blue Willow Inn the next time I am back in Georgia.
Too Yummy to pass up!!.......2006-01-09
My mom gave me this book for Christmas. I have tried numerous recipes. We have loved them all! I cooked for numerous family and friends during the holidays. They all raved and wanted the recipes. Some of them are so simple and they surprise you how incredibly good they are. It doesnt have to be hard.
