Book Description
The world's oceans are one of the last great largely unexplored places on earth. They teem with life some of it familiar and some of it strange to us and "Fish Face" takes us closer to the fish that live here. Showing full-page pictures of close up portraits of their faces, the book takes us from the beautiful to the ugly, from spiky to rotund. The huge variety of species is appealing and astounding. The book takes a look at the work of David Doubilet, widely acclaimed as the world's leading underwater photographer. He has photographed fish for over 25 years and "Fish Face" looks at the most colourful, fun and bizarre fish he has encountered. This book should appeal to anyone who has ever wondered about the variety of fish living in our oceans and to naturalists and photographers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Great pictures!.......2007-06-10
This book has wonderful pictures but I think it could have been presented in a better way. The pages are small so the pictures are too small in some cases. Some pictures you can't see well because they are spread over two facing pages & get lost in the center. But I love the expressions of many of the fish, you can almost sense their personality. And I love seeing the incredible variety of fish.
A great gift........2007-01-20
Lot's of interesting and colorful photos. I gave it to my sister, for christmas, and our whole family sat around looking at the fish for hours.
Not just a pretty face..........2007-01-13
Once again, David Doubilet shows his ingenious photography work. I really enjoyed Water Light Time, and Fish Face is proving to be a close second. Each image is carefully shot. It is wonderful to see close-up images of deep sea marine life and other creatures that one would not normally find on a casual snorkel excursion. There is a sense of humor to some of these photos, too, which makes looking at them even more entertaining. This is a perfect companion to Water Light Time!
best book ever, picture or otherwise.......2007-01-10
we bought this book first at the monterey aquarium and have recently purchased it on amazon again for our montessori library. parents and children alike love looking at the pictures and marvelling at the wonders of the coral seas and barrier reef. buy this book. it's great!
fish face.......2004-02-06
Doubilet has done it again. As a vintage underwater photographer of 50 years I have devoured all of his books, as an inspiration. Undoubtedly he is the best underwater photographer in the world today and his use of light and subject matter are masterly. Fish Face is an interesting and difficult theme handled with great aplomb.I recommend this work to photographers and all those interested in the sea.

Book Description
A passion for photography and photo-history drove Parisa Damandan to painstakingly seek and accumulate an impressive collection of portrait photographs from Isfahan, Iran. A native Isfahani herself, Damandan followed every lead and knocked on every door to find the pioneer studio photographers of the city. Covering the period of 1920-50, Portrait Photographs from Isfahan, co-published with the Prince Claud Fund Library, is a visual document of a nation in transition to modernity, a matter explored and expounded upon by the accompanying articles. The man off the street with a fashionable chapeau and a three-piece suit or with the traditional turban and cloak, posing with friends, wife or children; recently emancipated women standing unveiled and confident; and Polish war refugees passing through the city on their trip back home after having been driven out by the Nazis, all found their way to the studio and posed for the camera.

Award Winner for Book Design.......2001-10-03
This book has won a Southern Books Competition Award of Honorable Mention for Book Design from the Southeastern Library Association. This award is given in recognition of the book's aesthetic appeal and design and for fine craftsmanship in its printing and binding. Congratulations to photographer Philip Gould, author Jason Berry, designer Laura Roubique Gleason, printer Dai Nippon Printing, and the Louisiana State University Press.
An ace of a book.......2000-09-20
Phillip Gould has been an astute and quirky observer of Louisiana life for a couple of decades. Though a transplant he has established serious and widely respected local roots. He speaks Cajun/Creole French; he speaks to the heart. This finely honed selection of portaits echoes every strophe of Louisiana life. His visages map and mirror what Louisiana is and is about. They stand as a testament to a place and its cultures-- a singular place at that, fiercely individual cultures to boot; a world and its folkways that still tenaciously remain undiluted into the general American homogeneity. Gould's reportorial eye is keen and witty, his pictures are trenchant and lambent and are destined to imprint and remain.

Book Description
In the Face of History brings together 22 photographers whose work is rooted in a sense of time and place, and who collectively map out a century of European experience. Some are caught up in moments of epic conflict, while others reflect subtler currents of social change. Intensely personal chronicles of community, family and love sit alongside, and at times overlap with, documents of historical record. The images range from the trenches of the First World War to the Jewish ghetto of Lodz; from the Paris of Atget, Brassaï and Doisneau to the Berlin of Michael Schmidt and Wolfgang Tillmans; and from cities and suburbs to tiny villages. They document a vast range of experience, but all are distinguished by the photographers' compulsion to record the world as they find it, a world refracted through the prism of their own experience. Often uplifting, sometimes shocking, In the Face of History depicts a past that is fundamentally a part of our present, and in doing so provides a moving new take on what it means to be European.

Book Description
Isabelle Huppert stands out among actresses due to her audacious choices of roles, both for films as well as for the theater. Her intelligence and intuition are evident in the parts she plays. Her renown as an actress is not limited to the French cinema but embraces Europe and the rest of the world.
This most mysterious of actresses likes to be photographed but she is not an easy subject. She offers herself to the eye of the camera yet remains secretive, almost absent. The great photographers of our timeRichard Avedon, Edouard Boubat, Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliot Erwitt, Lartigues, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Sylvia Plachy, Marc Riboud, and Scavullotook up the challenge. Huppert's energy and strength are often shrouded behind a kind of melancholy, and these photographers have captured beautifully that contradictory quality. Not only a collection of gorgeous images, this haunting book also unveils the bond between the public image and the secret soul of this unique woman.
Customer Reviews:
...and God created Isabelle Huppert.......2006-07-02
What can one say about the fabulous Isabelle Huppert. Probably the greatest actress in the last 30 years. No other actress seems to capture the roughness, the coldness, the reality of everyday life quite like Mrs. Huppert.
This book shows and portays in pictures the true Isabelle Huppert. Each picture is perfectly shot and shows true emotion and captures her presence that has stolen millions of fans all over the Globe. Beautifully put together collection of rare and unseen photos, this book is a steal for movie and photo lovers.
I've been a big fan since the early 80's and her performances keep getting better and better. French filmakers always consider her "The Movie". Even though some movies she starred in were not great productions, her acting alone is worth it.
Here are a few of her movies that must be seen:
Gabrielle (2005)-Very intense dialog driven
Soeurs fâchées, Les (2004)-A cold city person with humor
Vie promise, La (2002)-A lost soul
8 femmes (2002)-She steals the show even with such a cast
Pianiste, La (2001)-A must see, Only Huppert fits this role
Merci pour le chocolat (2000)-Ah! That great Hot Chocolate!
École de la chair, L' (1998)-Ah! The famous affairs and one night stand... or more!
Palmes de M. Schutz, Les (1997)-Inspiration and devotion
Cérémonie, La (1995)-Cold, Revengeful and plain Maniac
Séparation, La (1994)-You feel sorry for Daniel Auteuil (Another amazing actor)
Madame Bovary (1991)-The role that made her an International star
Une affaire de femmes (1988)-Guts and Courage
Cactus (1986)-Unsentimental but Magical
Coup de foudre (1983)-Pain, Anger and violent jealousy
Coup de torchon (1981)-Innocense and Free Spirited
Heaven's Gate (1980)-Her introduction to the US market
Loulou (1980)-Not a great film but Huppert and Depardieu steal the screen
Dentellière, La (1977)-This performance made her a major star in Europe
Valseuses, Les (1974)-Another "Let Loose" performance
Hope this helps out all of you that has never seen or heard of Isabelle Huppert. Once you've seen a few of these films, you won't stop until you've seem them all.
From a huge Isabelle Huppert fan...

American Diner Then and Now
ASIN: 1568985053 |
Book Description
The blue plate special, meatloaf, a cheeseburger deluxe, a milkshake in a frosty mixing canister, a hot cup of joe—all served by a friendly face in a well-lighted aluminum tube. Such are the special joys of the American diner. And it was just these pleasures that photographer Stephan Schacher set out to document when he left New York on a journey through North America that would test both his stomach and his resolve. Schacher’s mission: to feed his hunger only at diners, and to photograph both his meal and his server every time. The result is a unique and deeply human story—quirky and nostalgic and generous—of one man's quest to discover North America's diner culture and his own place in it.
Traveling from a Jersey diner to the Canadian Rockies to a shoreside clambake shack on the Pacific Ocean, Schacher's culinary adventure is documented here with a wealth of visual materials. The author's arresting photographs of succulent steaks and greasy fries, of smiling waitresses in uniforms or jeans, and brightly colored plastic dishes and table mats are supplemented by maps showing the photographer's route across the continent.

Red Sonja: She-Devil With a Sword Vol. 1

Book Description
Wrongfully deprived of her throne, Ghita enlists an army of lizardman warriors.
Customer Reviews:
Uninhibited sword and sandal.......2006-10-22
Frank Thorne was among the early artists on Marvel's "Red Sonja" back in the late 1970s, but apparently found the mainstream comic publishers too constraining. In particular, he found the dress codes too constraining for his mighty heroines, who tended to bust out of their costumes with great frequency and zeal. Ghita is among Thorne's early-80s efforts in adding bawdy fun to the serious world of swords and sorcery. This book is all B&W, but that shouldn't interfere with anyone's fun.
Thorne starts with a few well-worn staples of the genre: a protagonist with lowly beginnings, a companion mage, and a fawning sidekick for comic relief. In Ghita's case, that includes an unspecified past in bordellos, a satyric sorceror skilled only in making your gold disappear and your drink vanish, and a crouched semihuman with a crocodilian perma-grin. There's plenty of swashbuckling adventure, evil wizardry, and eldritch forces from beyond the grave. This certainly isn't for the kiddies, though. Ghita is ravished at various times by at least four different species. That doesn't put her off from frequent, friendly frolics, however, and she makes friends easily.
Some people put comics away when they grew up - well, that's their choice. Others of us kept enjoying them, and are very happy that they've grown up with us. Although first appeared over 25 years ago she's still as fresh as ever. And, as an extra bonus, this collection includes a few Ghita sketches, a brief biographical note tracing Thorne's bawdy heroines, and a few photos of the model after whom Ghita was drawn. All in all, an enjoyable package.

A quite uncommon swords and sorcery creation........2005-09-25
Ghita of Alizarr is a funny, merry and good-humoured swords and sorcery comic strip by Frank Thorne, the talented artist who drew the first episodes of Red Sonja. Frank Thorne loved drawing Red Sonja but Roy Thomas, the comics editor, didn't share Thorne's vision of the character, so Thorne quit Sonja and created his own swordswoman : Ghita .To some, Ghita was only a shameless version of Red Sonja, but Thorne's creation is much more than that. Ghita is a harlot, a king's favourite, possessed by a warrior's spirit against which she occasionnally struggles. But she is above all a character with a strong personality, fighting to live her own way. Her two fellows - Thenef, a fake wizard, and Dahib, the dung-carrier - are also credible and endearing characters. These three uncommon individuals, both ambitious and hedonist, fight their way through highly rhythmical adventures swarming with goblins, unicorns, zombies, winged women, magicians...
Ghita of Alizarr is not a consensual comic strip, but the work of an author who took advantage of creative freedom to give shapes to his personal dreams. Ghita is a festive, boisterous and joyously erotic comic strip which is not like any other comics I've read. The beautiful lines of Frank Thorne's drawing show evidence of the artist's delight in creating his heroic fantasy world, and everything in Ghita is drawn with the same care.
One word about the publisher who got the good idea to put (for the first time) all of Ghita's stories into one book, which is beautifully printed. You will also find some extra art work by Frank Thorne. All this makes this comic book far worth its price.

Swords, Sorcery, & SEX!.......2001-10-17
In the late 70's, in an attempt to compete with HEAVY METAL magazine, Warren Publishing put out "1984", a B&W anthology that took the company's usual mix of sci-fi, horror, fantasy & mystery to a new level by adding S E X. LOTS of it. So much, in fact, that the magazine quickly spiraled downward into a morass of the worst trash imaginable, with terrible writing and even worse artwork. Yet amidst this, one bright light shone-- a blonde warrior woman with a taste for blood as powerful as her appetite for sex-- GHITA OF ALIZARR, the wondrous creation of Frank Thorne.
Frank, a longtime commercial artist and sometime comic-book illustrator, had taken Marvel's RED SONJA to unprecedented heights of popularity-- until he left the series abruptly, in mid-story. The character has NEVER been handled as well since. Free of the restrictions of the Comics Code, Thorne created his own world from scratch and populated it with a mix of wizards, warriors, non-human creatures and supernatural monsters, and turned loose on the public an EPIC storyline about a quest to retake a city overrun by evil conquerors that reads like somebody should adapt it into a feature-film!
The episodic format of 1984 (later 1994), I feel, did not do justice to the storyline. Reading it all together so many layers of character and intrigue are evident that I never picked up on before. Ghita is neither heartless slut or murderous savage, but a warm-hearted woman of merely loose morals who spends the story battling as much for control of her soul (possessed by the spirit of a dead warrior-king) as she does slaying the infidels. Along the way, she's accompanied by her steady friend Thenef (who poses as a mage) and Dahib (a half-troll who worships her as a goddess).
THE COMPLETE GHITA collects every episode to date-- both stories (the 2nd reprinted for the 1st time!) and a short story from Eros' THE EROTIC WORLDS OF FRANK THORNE. It's a THICK book-- and one any fan of SONJA or XENA should have! During its initial run, GHITA was often the ONLY feature worth reading in 1984/1994. Now one can enjoy it to the fullest, without all the DRECK getting in the way!
Red Sonja with out the sex problems.......2001-04-30
Frank Thorne is probably best know for this work on Red Sonja for Marvel.
Ghita draws heavilly on that experience (or perhaps vice versa) with a lot in common with the chainmail bikini clad Sonja.
The big differences come in 2 areas 1 the level of gore this is far more visceral and bloody than the Red Sonja books the other is of course the sex Red Sonja had this no sex until beaten in battle clause Ghita shares no such qualms.
Franks sex scenes are quite time by the standards of the eros line which may be a good thing he also seems to marry the needs of the plot to the sex quite well so while it comes off as titilating rather than erotic it's still worth a look
