In addition, this volume will include the compilation of Riblet, a back up story initially released in five parts through the BONE series. Customer Reviews:
Silly and fun.......2007-10-02
I've loved all the Bone stuff I've read so far, and this volume makes a great digression from the main storyline. It's extremely humorous, and very creative. Bone fans ought to read it, and those new to Smith's work might enjoy it as well.
A good tall-tale.......2007-08-17
I read "Stupid Stupid Rat-Tails" before I read the original "Bone" series (I randomly grabbed it off the public library book shelf and hadn't really heard of Bone yet) - so maybe this makes me a little less harsh in my review of the book. I think SSRT is a nice, quick, tall-tale of a story with a fun adventure, and humerous characters and dialogue. It wasn't meant to be an epic like the main series "Bone", just a quick romp to fill us in on a bit of history of the rat creatures.
Being that it is a prequel-esque story, no previous knowlege of the Bone series is required. And long-time Bone fans should be aware that when you boil it down this book has very little connection to the larger "Bone" story other than Big Bone Johnson and the rat creatures themselves; I don't think it was meant to be any kind of lead-in to the Bone series.
Anyway, good rainy-day read when you need a chuckle or two. :D
Partially Disappointed.......2007-02-19
I wish you could rate each story rather than the book as a whole. That said, the first story that Jeff Smith illustrated was excellent. It was witty, had roots with the main bone comic books, and very enjoyable. However, the second story was horrid. I have never read a comic that was so god awful! I honestly felt like my IQ had dropped about 10 points just by reading the dang thing.
I would NOT recommend buying this book because of the second story. It pains me to say that too, because the first story is really good, but not good enough to fork out 15 bucks for a few pages.
Anything Bone is worthy, but Bone is worthier........2005-11-16
Jeff Smith, Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails (Cartoon Books, 2000)
Yes, folks, it's Bone: The Prequel! Here we have the story of Big Johnson Bone, explorer by trade and founder of Boneville, and (obliquely) how he came to do so. This, as to be expected if you've read the Bone saga (and if you haven't, what on Earth are you waiting for?), involves a lot of cute baby animals, a dragon or two, and a large, incredibly stupid army of rat creatures. It's chock full of the same kind of stuff that makes Bone such a treasure.
Also added, for your reading enjoyment, is a Riblet comic. Set in the same world as the Bone stories (i.e., a world inhabited by stupid, stupid rat creatures), the Riblet stories are concerned with, no surprise here, Riblet, a baby boar. In this tale, Riblet has been kidnapped by a couple of rat creatures with a taste for pork, and must escape. Which is somewhat difficult, if you're not actually smart enough to realize you've been kidnapped.
Everything that comes out of Cartoon Books is worth reading. You want it all. I'd suggest starting with some of the earlier Bone stories before this, but you will eventually get around to it. Trust me. ****
This Book for Fans' Eyes Only.......2005-10-11
This volume will serve better as a treat for fans than as an entry-level series for those unfamiliar with Bone.
Two stories are contained in this one volume. The first features an adventure of "Big" Johnson Bone, founder of Boneville and ancestor of the three Bones from the original series. Jeff Smith's artwork is up to its usual beautiful standards and Tom Sniegoski's writing gives Smith plenty of opportunity to exhibit his predilection for adorable baby animals and hare-brained adventure. The story is a self-conscious "tall tale" depicting Big Johnson as a self-aggrandizing pioneer with a tendency to get in and out of dire situations. The story is nothing new and lacks the depth (and length) of the original Bone, but that is to be expected. No one can write rat creature dialogue quite like Smith, but the rats are still humorous. Less funny and even annoying is the uptight talking monkey, Mr. Pip, who serves little purpose to the storyline and never quite lives up to his intended role of comic sidekick.
The other story, "Riblet," features the writing of Sniegoski and the art of Stan Sakai. Related to Bone by the presence of talking animals and stupid rat creatures, the story follows the rats' unfortunate run-in with a sadistic baby boar. The antics that ensue are reminiscent of Woody Woodpecker cartoons and, like Woody, may annoy readers who find inflicting injury on others less than funny.
Bone fans hungry for more will likely enjoy Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails, but the neophyte may walk away underwhelmed and not overly interested in pursuing Bone further.
Book Description
Carried in 700 papers worldwide, including the Washington Post, the New York Daily News, the Miami Herald, and the Tokyo Times, Close to Home has devout fans that range from elementary students to octogenarians. As one fan put it, "I feel like you have been looking in my window and are drawing my life!" Though by no means a Peeping Tom, John McPherson does have the unique skill of being able to take those idiosyncrasies of daily life that drive us all nuts and infuse them with razor-sharp wit. With an award-winning line of greeting cards, a top-selling block calendar, and a line of clothing, Close to Home continues to gain momentum among readers.
In this latest collection John features angry letters from readers, cartoons that were killed by the editor, a glimpse inside his creative process, and never-before-seen photos of his erasers, quill pens, and his lucky drawing slippers. Who could resist it?
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Laughs!.......2006-11-12
I really enjoy John McPherson's humor! He has a great talent for turning common, everyday events and topics into hilarious comedies! I started reading his early comics that were published in Campus Life magazine and have been an avid reader ever since.
Awesome.......2006-02-23
If you are a Close to Home fan you can not go wrong with this book. I LOVED the mamogram one!

Chewing Gum in Church: A "Yikes!" Collection (Yikes)
ASIN: 1560974311 |
Book Description
"Charming from start to finish... Weissman indirectly captures childhood better than most literal representations do." - The Onion
Steven Weissman won the Harvey Award for "Best New Talent" in 1998, and Fantagraphics Books is proud to present his second graphic novel, Don't Call Me Stupid.
Weissman writes and draws hilariously charming stories revolving around a gang of precocious children (the "Tykes") with supernatural features. In this collection of short stories, all of the Tykes take a turn in the spotlight, including Li'l Bloody (a vampire toddler), the Pullapart Boy, X-Ray Spence, and the Li'l Tin Stars.
Also included are the title story, "A Hayride with Dracula," "Jameswatch," "Back in the Day" (featuring the origin of Pullapart's undead puppy, Elzie Crisler), and more. Each story is printed in a two-color format.
Customer Reviews:
Yikes! These Tykes are Fantastic!.......2002-05-30
Take "Our Gang" and add Universal Studios' cast of famous monsters including Frankenstein and Dracula, then add the love and skill of the cartoonist genius Steven Weissman, and you have "Don't Call Me Stupid" -- Buy this book and find out why his contemporaries are calling him one of the Best!
Applie Pie and Sour Cabbage.......2002-04-09
You got Lil Bloody (who is sort of a Hispanic Eddie Munster). You got Pullapart Boy (it don't take a genius - you touch him, he falls apart). You got Dead Boy (he has crosses where his eyes are cos they've been - you know? - sown up). Later you've got X-Ray Spence (he can see THROUGH stuff) and Medusa Girl (who has a kinda crush on X-Ray Spence because he doesn't get turned to stone by her, he can - you know - see RIGHT INSIDE HER). They fight, they spook people, they walk about and get bored. It's childhood but - (seriously) not. (It's The Crazy Gang soundtracked by Sparklehorse.)
The art is sort of scratchy (it looks like it's been screen printed from scratched and scored linoleum), full of hard lines and mono washes, but it suits the scratchy and uncomfortable nature of what you see - Chubby bullies the kids, Lil Bloody takes bites out of people, Pullapart Boy - well, he gets pulled apart. (As, from time to time, do the stories themselves - Weissman does not always get it just right or just so - sometimes you lose interest, a little, or flick ahead to see how long a particular story lasts.)
It's gruesome and creepy and about as wholesome as apple pie stuffed with sour cabbage, but if you like Edward Gorey you'll get a kick out of this.

Lame.......2006-10-13
I bought this because it was on sale. Today is 10-13-06, so i have been through most of it. I have had 2 laughs and about 4 chuckles from the 280 or so days I have been reading it. This calendar is very dull and boring.

Book Description
Back for a second year with all new entries, this calendar will continue to amaze readers with its intelligence on stupidity. A hilarious collection of the incredibly stupid things people do and say - even the really smart people - the Duh! 2004 Calendar entertains readers bypointing out some of the many people out there who are more stupid than they are. Anyone would feel smart next to the guy who died from snake bites after he and his friend played catch (with rattlesnakes); or next to the crook who stole a car, found a camera inside, used it to take pictures of himself, then left the camera in the car (his next photo was a police mug shot); and especially next to the guy from Sunderland, England, who glued his nostrils shut after confusing a bottle of glue with nasal spray. Readers get a double benefit with this calendar: a smart laugh every day and a boost in self-esteem.
Customer Reviews:
A few gems surrounded by Duh!.......2004-11-06
I was given this calendar for Christmas last year and it seemed very promising - it's exactly the sort of thing I go for. There are some entertaining entries, but I think the author ran out of good material.
The entries consist of stupid things people have done or said, as well as famous quotes about human stupidity, and the author's own thoughts on human stupidity. Most of the first three are ok, producing some real gems occasionally, but the author's own thoughts on stupidity are simply awful - they lack cleverness, insight, and sometimes even sense.
The calendar is a great concept, but I can't recommend it. The really entertaining bits are balanced by the painful bits, and the rest is just filler.
Cute calendar, good gift.......2003-12-27
I purchased this calendar for my husband as a Christmas gift. I started the tradition of putting a page-a-day calendar in his stocking every year, and up until this year, it was always "The Far Side". This year, as I was looking through the Amazon listings for "The Far Side", I stumbled upon "Duh!" and checked it out. It seemed funny enough that I thought it would make a nice change from the usual.
As it turned out, this calendar was pretty funny. Some of the anecdotes are a little goofy, but most of them (I peeked ahead!) are good for a nice chuckle, especially if you just can't believe some of the stuff people do!
If you enjoy a laugh (and maybe even if you want to feel less bad about your own life seeming like a never-ending sitcom), you'd enjoy this calendar. The only downfall is that I couldn't read just one, so I've already gone through most of the year. They're funny stories to share with friends or magnet to the fridge, too.
