Great for the novice.......2000-05-10
This is a great book for the novice botanist. As a person who just recently started trying to identify wildflowers in the Monterey area, I found this book a great guide. I already have a couple of other books, including the ones from the Audubon Society and from the California Native Plant Society, but this one is so simple and covers most of the flowers you commonly see. It's easy to flip through, the pictures are clear and in color, and it certainly doesn't overwhelm you with technical jargon. I was only sorry it doesn't include some of the smaller/tinier flowers I see around. Maybe in the next edition. A great gift!

Not as good as other lonely plaent books.......2007-09-30
This book is thin and not as well done as other lonely planet books. For a trip to Kaua'i, I'd recommend another publisher's travel book. I purchased this book along with "the blue book" on Kaua'i. I found the blue book to be much more comprehensive as well as more entertaining to read.
Excellent Kauai guide book.......2007-06-09
I'm just back from my first (and not my last) trip to Kauai. I bought 7 Kauai travel guide books to plan my trip (yes, I was overly excited). Of the 7, this and one other were head and shoulders above the rest. I strongly recommend it.
Almost completely useless.......2007-01-10
Please relate to my comments on the other guidebook about Queensland.
Kauai Guidebook was not as deceiving as that one, may be because being so thin, we didn't expect very much from it, and... come on!!! Hawaii anyway!!
We got an address for a place to stay, the rest was decided either thanks to comments from colleagues who had been there already, or from the REAL guidebook series for Hawaii, the blue series. A colleague loaned it to us. At the beginning, being so used to Lonely Planet we thought we will sticked with it. Truth is we, never used it there, only the blue book which offers detailed descriptions, interesting comments and very useful maps.
Book Description
The most popular of the Hawaiian islands for backpacking and hiking. Explore miles of seldom-trod trails through areas of magnificent natural beauty: immense waterfalls, untrammeled golden beaches, dense banks of ferns dotted with wild orchids, and more. Dayhikes and backpacks.

No longer useful.......2007-09-23
This book may once have been useful, but we found it outdated to the point of uselessness. Some of the trails described no longer meaningfully existed as such, and one was a dirt road with a heavy 4wd traffic. After having been mislead one too many times, we abandoned this book completely and relied only on the trail descriptions in The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed (Ultimate Kauai Guidebook). That said, we looked to this book only for hikes, not beach walks and the like. It may be that it is a very competent guide for strolls. This book doesn't describe that many more hikes than the Ultimate Guidebook does, but the way some trails are broken into several hikes makes it seem at first glance that it does.
Kaua'i Trails.......2007-08-24
This was one of two books we used while hiking Kauai. The description of floral and birds one might see on certain trails was extremely good. Since we are birders this was very beneficial. Excellent text and very detailed.
Excellent trail book.......2007-01-10
I can't imagine the trip we took without this guide. It took us along trails that were stunning and amazingly little traveled. I felt like we saw the REAL Kauai. Surely it wasn't the hotels at the shore. Our only complaint is that some of the trails narrowed without warning at high altitudes and in places that seemed less than safe - especially along the Napoli coast. But all in all it made our trip the excellent journey that it was.
Inspiring - use supplemental trail maps for footpaths.......2007-01-06
Just returned from 6 days on Kauai, where we enjoyed a number of the shorter hikes using the 2002 edition. The author's fondness for Kauai really comes through in each hike's description. The ratings of length, elevation gain, and particularly of what kind of footwear is needed for each hike were invaluable -- we didn't have hiking boots and focused on the "tennis shoe" options. As the author recommends, DO get supplemental trail maps even for what you might *anticipate* will be a straightforward short hike - we relied on Kauai Trails in attempting to find the Berry Flat & Discovery Center trails in Kokee Park since it looked so simple, and ended up spending a panicked hour on trails through thick growth of strawberry guava trees as the sun was setting because trail names/signs had changed. (If you do attempt Trip 40 or 41, check with the Kokee Museum for a map. Trips like 9- Kuilau Ridge on old roads are indeed straightforward and also rewarding.) Another possible frustration is with the driving directions, which don't use the ubiquitous mileage signs: On Kauai many spots of tourist/hiker interest are not clearly marked and with the one-lane roads you may not have an immediate opportunity to turn around to access the pull-over, so do read driving instructions carefully before you set out and pull over whenever you think you might have found the spot. As previously noted, instructions to refer to a previous hike listing can be frustrating and it would be helpful if the exact break point into Hike A and Hike B were marked in the text and on the maps. I was also concerned by the reference to picking up (a few) shells on Anini Beach given that if everyone took shells off beaches there would be none left for others to see or for mollusks' homes.
Very Helpful.......2006-11-11
11-06 Just returned from Kauai traveling with an impaired walker.
The book was fabulous for planning side trips. Level of difficulty,
distance and even type of shoe required are all here. Good maps & info.
I can't wait to return with a fellow hiker to take advantage of all the
great trips and tips in this book.

This One Goes In the Suitcase.......2004-05-13
There may be other travel books that offer glossier photos or more detailed restaurant reviews, but for historical perspective, interesting tidbits of information, and honest opinions it is hard to beat the Moon series of travel guides. The accommodations sections include many cottages and B&B's, which we prefer above hotels and condos. My Kauai book has gone on two trips with me; the last time it was the only one of five guidebooks to make it past the packing cut and into the suitcase.

Birds of Kauai.......2007-10-17
Didn't realize that the book was without color; I was disappointed. The best book for the purpose of identifying Hawaiian birds is Hawaiian Audubon Society's publication on the subject.
Birds of Kaua'i.......2007-08-24
Very informative, but color pictures would have made it better. It's difficult to match a black and white picture with a colorful bird.
Birds of Kaua'i.......2007-08-06
I assumed the pictures would be in color, my mistake. The black and white pictures of the birds are difficult to see (way too dark)to be able to identify them.
Interesting text, excellent photographs.......1999-07-11
Jim Denny's excellent photographs complement his excellent text. The book is neither a field guide (for that, use Douglas Pratt's Field Guide to the Birds of Hawai'i and the Tropical Pacific) nor is it a site guide (use Pratt or Sohren for that), but something else: an accurate and fascinating review of the birds of the island and how they fit into the marvelous land. Bits of interesting history are interwoven with the descriptions, and Denny's relation of the tragedy of the lost birds of Kaua'i can make you weep. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or will look for birds on this remarkable island. My one complaint is that the paintings Denny chose to illustrate those birds he could not photograph are not the most accurate depictions available, though they are of historical interest.
An absolute "must" for every bird lover!.......1999-06-30
This book is essential for anyone planning to visit this beautiful island, and if you have no plans to go there... look through this wonderful guide, and you may change your mind! The glossy pages are filled with photos of the most illusive and rare birds of Kaua'I. These colorful creatures are found nowhere else on earth. They are photographed in their native surroundings, which are as unique and bold as the birds themselves. Jim Denny did a wonderful job describing each species in detail. Wonderful photos, great reading! I highly recommend this book for lovers of birds, and lovers of beauty. Thumbs up!

A beauifully written and pictured account of Na Pali coast........1999-08-23
This rare find of a book is a must for anyone who wants to learn more about one of the most beautiful and least spoiled areas of Hawaii. The text is very informative and the pictures take you to very exotic and very hard to reach places.

Superb.......2001-08-11
Thus book was a labor of love. With years of experience as a lifeguard and surfer, John's curiousity went beyond. He studied oceanography, read all he could, and interviewed all those who knew anything about each beach. The result is the best source of information that will ever be available about Hawaiian beaches.
