Book Description
This is the first solo photo book by Australian photographer Paul Freeman. 'Blue' magazine's favorite photographer for many years, Freeman is also known for authoring the best-selling biography of Ian Roberts ('Ian Roberts: Finding Out', Random House, Australia 1997)
'Bondi Classic' stands out in a publishing genre filled, of late, with thoughtless compilations. It's a sumptuous 240-page hardbound, with beautiful production values and design, and exquisite photography. It's the first in a self-published series of 'coffee table' collectibles by Freeman's.
A tribute to the Australian hero, Bondi Classic responds to a strong international demand for a book of Freeman's art nude portraiture. With remarkable talent Freeman gives us a sensual yet respectful look at a vast and varied array of Aussie men, including some of Australia's top actors, models, sports stars and Olympians. (Captured champion iron men, Princess Diana's personal trainer, mister Australia body building champions, actors from international theatre and film, television soap heart-throbs, top pro footballers, Olympic boxers, divers and wrestlers, and an Australian Man Of The Year!)
Using classic and European religious art references, often within an ancient and moody Sydney coastal environment, Bondi Classic takes us on an epic of unabashed male physicality. Maintaining a reverential distance from his subjects, Freeman's story revels in the paradoxes of masculinity. His subjects are strong yet sensual, courageous while provocative, violent and divinely innocent.
Director of the internationally- acclaimed Sydney Festival, Brett Sheehy, gave the book a rave review when he launched it in Sydney in February 2004. Sheehy referred to Freeman as a new Bruce Weber, as well as Australia's own Renaissance man.

Sensual and Beautiful.......2007-06-05
This is simply the most beautiful collection of male nude art photography I have seen! the lighting, the compositions, the special beauty of the men which the photographer draws out, the fine balance between eroticism sensuality..and i haven't seen Paul Freeman's other books yet! Move over Bruce Weber"
The Men of Australia.......2005-12-21
For those looking for the best of the books of male photography, this portfolio by Paul Freeman deserves a place high on the list. Different photographers approach the male nude with different agendas: some try for classic poses, some go for spontaneous moods, some keep the 'privates' in the shadows while others place the focus there, some costume, some try for natural effects. Freeman searches (and definitely finds!) subjects who are quintessentially masculine Men. And this collection should equally engage the interest of women as of the ready-made male population.
Freeman uses his fellow countrymen (Australia) to show us the virile attitude of the untamed. These 'models' are buff, have body decor from piercing or ink, know how to make the partially clothed form even more sensuous that the fully nude form (although there is a lot of that, too), and in general creates photographs that are well conceived and executed and presented in a superb format. There are portraits solo and in tandem. This is a collection that will find a wide audience. Recommended for the novice and the connoisseur collector alike! Grady Harp, December 05
MEN, GLORIOUS MEN.......2005-08-09
The photo on the cover should tell a potential reader/buyer what he can expect between the covers, so to speak. What you will discover is a plethora of handsome men who will send your mind into a fantasy world that must, by its very nature, remain yours. The book is great.
An Instant Classic!.......2004-07-15
In the January 2004 issue of "Blue", the Australian magazine where Paul Freeman is decribed as the magazine's "most featured" photographer, the artist says that he has always wanted to keep some link with classical art. "Sort of like a meat pie inside the Sistine Chapel." Most of these models Michelangelo would have loved, and they to a man are meat pies. There is not a wimp or effeminate-- and it's okay if one is-- man in this collection of over 200 photographs. These men are rugged, hairy, beefy, muscular, tattooed, pierced, sweaty, wet and muddy. Some of them are a bit stylized and wearing gladiator garb. Many of them are at the beach-- Bondi perhaps--there are some beautiful portraits here. And no model has his genitalia airbrushed.
In his brief introduction Mr. Freeman says that as a youngster he was taken by the image of the suffering Saint Sebastian (check out the portrait on page 174 of Garth Elliot 2) and that present day influences are Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts (speaking of airbrushing photographs). I think many of his models look more like some of the work of Jim French as well as Caravaggio-- whom he acknowledges as an inspiration-- and Michelangelo.
Many of these men are photographed as many as 6, 7 or 8 times so you will probably get to see a lot of your favorites. Where to begin-- the man on page 11 (beautiful shadows), the outrageous Grant Perry (page 24 and 7 more photos), the hairy barrel chested Igor Praporshchikov on page 55, Black Angel No. 4 on page 73, Mat Obelisk on pages 76 and 77-- perfect exposure and lighting--the Gladiator on page 103 that, thank goodness, shows up again and again-- Gladiator 4 on page 126-- this is an unusal and most flattering pose-- the portrait of Ryan Kwanten on page 154, Kane 1 and 1 (pages 158 and 159-- the list goes on and on. The only photographs I don't care for are the ones with a snake wrapped around the model. Perhaps it's the Garden of Eden story that turns most of us off to these kinds of photographs. Richard Avedon did the snake photographs better years ago anyway.
If the test for a book of photographs is whether or not you return to it again and again, then BONDI CLASSIC gets an A+. In its own way this book is just as hot as Tom Bianchi's ON THE COUCH series. If you can only buy one book of this kind this year, this one's the one. Oh, go ahead; treat yourself and buy Bianchi's also.
Book Description
A sensual, visually opulent photographic history of the nude athlete.
The history of sports is also a history of nude photography. Sports and gamesindeed all forms of physical culturehave always been practiced in a state of at least semi-nudity. Yet never before have the sensual and erotic aspects of sports been celebrated with such enthusiasm as they are today.
Peter Kuhnst's thoughtful selection of images traces the history of the nude athlete in photography from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. From Eadweard Muybridge's motion studies of runners and javelin throwers, through European Naturism, the painterly photography of Pictorialism, and Leni Riefenstahl's work under the Third Reich, to stunning contemporary photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, and Annie Leibovitz, the list of photographers is long and varied, and their styles range from traditional to rebellious to humorous to provocative.
This sumptuous and beautifully printed survey is sure to captivate both lovers of fine photography and sports fans.
With 160 photographs in color and duotone by: Yann Arthus-Bertrand Diana Blok Lynn Davis Thomas Eakins Greg Gorman André Kertész Annie Leibovitz Herbert List Robert Mapplethorpe Eadweard Muybridge Leni Riefenstahl Herb Ritts Frank Eugene Smith Bruce Weber and many others

Painful........2006-06-14
I purchased this book hoping for some artistic pictures such as might be suitable for framing. What I found instead is a jumble of photos that are anything but. A completely disappointing collection at best.
Portraying Naked Men and Women at the Peak of Good Health .......2005-09-03
Contrary to what one might suppose from its title, this lavish portfolio does not compile nude portraits of celebrity sports figures or body-builder enthusiasts. Rather, most of the pictures included portray the health/hygiene and nature spirituality aspects of the multiform clothing-free movement from its earliest days. Together with a highly informative text, the pictures make evident the relevance of the values and practices of naturist/nudist groups for modern dance, film, art, gymnastics, and the recreational conventions of the larger popular culture. The high quality reproductions are printed on heavy photographic-quality paper and bound in an oversize volume by a firm in Switzerland specializing in the publication of art books. Kuhnst is Professor of Sports Science at the University of Bochum (Germany).
Visually Appealing.......2005-08-09
Masculine perfection is a fleeting thing, and fortunately for anyone who decides to look at or own this book, he will find it documented therein. The men are at the zenith of their physical perfection. This book is a real treat!..spoil yourself

Learn From A Legend.......2001-06-03
Peter Gowland is the last of the old-school glamour photographers which included such greats as the late Gerald Hurell. In this book he demonstrates the images which have kept him in demand for over five decades. It is not a typical how-to manual. There is no elaboration of technique, but rather a series of examples on achieving beautiful images simply and elegantly. It is also a history of his work spotlighting how he dealt with issues of props, lighting, composition, and treating models as the valuable people they are. A splendid and necessary addition for any photographer of the genre.

Customer Reviews:
Technically interesting, visually terrible.........2004-09-08
Pros: Valuable informations and techniques. His approach to nude photography is enriching and motivating. Very soft and almost spiritual use of the naked body.
Cons: The pictures in this book are totally outdated (70's type), grainy and poorly printed. Few models are interesting and I personally don't like John's work. The technical info only refer to film cameras. Needs some serious update.
EXCELLENT!!!.......2003-01-22
Probably one of the best books I own. Very informative and detailed. Well illustrated. Teaches you what to look for in a picture. Gives you an idea of what you are trying to capture and how. If you are looking for a "how-to" book, then this is one of the best. Definitely a must have.
The "Pocket" Reference for Photographing the Nude.......2001-12-09
John Hedgecoe has provided many photographers (including me) with uncountable reference books on learning photography for many years. In fact, considering I had his volume on Basic Photography almost 25 years ago, he's a premier contributor to photographic education. "Photographing the Nude" continues his excellent and very in-depth style of covering a subject. As an idea and posing guide alone it's well worth the (very affordable) price. The only small criticism is that he has pulled the images from those same 25 years I've been following him. Some are dated and have the stale, British "Page Three" look. Easy to overlook considering the value elsewhere!
Brilliant work by a brilliant photographer.......2001-06-22
All in color! Capture the sensuality of the human form--male and female, alone and in couples--in artistic photographs. With expert photographer and best-selling author John Hedgecoe as your guide, you can master this difficult subject. More than 300 photographs in both color and black-and-white fire the imagination and illustrate Hedgecoe's practical advice. Explore Finally!! There are many nude books out there, but very few of them actually "teach" you how to photograph "the Nude."
Hedgecoe, bestselling photography author of many books, discusses all aspects of shooting indoors, including posing a model, lighting, choosing film, and selecting props and accessories. He also discusses outdoor shots, but most Nudes are traditionally shot indoors. (Try to find a model willing to pose in the middle of Central Park!)
This book teachs and helps you create *your own* style using unusual viewpoints, reflections, soft-focus effects, texture, and more. Also discussed is the use of special effects (body painting), depth of field, and computer images.
This is a must have for the aspiring photographer.

Respectful, Imaginative Natural Nudes.......2001-04-23
This volume does a fine job of capturing the evolution in Robert Farber's style of nude photography over 20 years from 1970-1990. If you are like me, you will find his more experimental work from 1985-1990 to be his best. Although many of his images contain similar elements, his technical ability to achieve those effects made enormous progress over the years. This volume is a classic which belongs in the collection of all those who enjoy well-done, inspiring nude photography.
The images in this book are harder than R (if it were a motion picture) in many cases, but the treatment is always respectful rather than exploitive.
Ronald K. Parker's essay is helpful in explaining Mr. Farber's work. " . . . [H]is moving classical nudes seem to draw inspiration from the Dutch old masters . . . ." " . . . [T]he softness of many of his images echoes Renoir's Impressionism . . . ." " . . . [Y]et his graphic nudes have all the strength of abstract art."
Mr. Parker points out that Mr. Farber "goes beyond the obvious to capture the unusual juxtapositions of body parts and multiple figures." He deals with both the beauty of the model and the models' impact on the viewer ("the provocation"). In doing so, he builds a "mystique of the model -- the hidden face and the exposed body."
Mr. Farber is a master in both natural and studio lighting. That is unusual in nude photography. His "lighting caresses" the model in a way that shoes Mr. Farber "appreciates and respects women."
For those who are interested in learning from his techniques, each of the 99 images here (61 in color) contains technical notes on how it was shot.
From 1970-1974, his work emphasizes a fresh look at the classical idea of the nude. Mr. Farber characterized this "as if I were using the strokes of a brush to paint with light." My favorites from this period were plates 1 and 15.
From 1975-1979, he began working with two models in an image. This was the result of the accidental arrival of two models for the same shooting session. Liking the results, he continued with this approach. My favorite from this period was plate 16.
From 1980-1984, he moved away from color towards black-and-white. This is an unusual direction for a photographer. My favorites from this period were plates 31, 44, 45, 55, and 57.
During 1985-1990, he used his imagination (his long suit) even more. My favorite plates were 66, 70, 73, 75, 78, 83, 84, 89, 91-93, 95, 96, and 98.
Mr. Farber's work is at its strongest when it leave much to the imagination. Now, that's hard to do with nude photography. But these images each contain the potential for 1001 nights of alternative tales.
Where else is less more, even when a lot seems exposed? Certainly abstract art makes this same point. Our attraction to simple designs captures this same elemental fascination with the minimum.
How can you engage others' imaginations to help them accomplish more by providing the outlines of potential, rather than connecting all of the dots?
Robert Farber is an artiste extraordinaire.......1999-02-19
Robert Farber's photography is stunning, very human, sensual, erotic, moving, and passionate. In MHO I would classify him to be among the world's very top photographers when it comes to shooting nudes. Through his eyes you see a totally different beauty, sublime, seductive and it takes your breathe away
a diverse and superbly crafted set of images.......1998-04-02
Farber's most distinctive nudes are firmly rooted in the pictorialist practices of the earliest photgraphers who sought to emulate the artistic conventions of canvas, oil and brush. He loves to use light to produce grain paintings evoking a pointillist impressionism that softens the contours of the human form and transports the subject into a hazy dreamland of delight. This book's high production standards do justice to the marvelous textural effects achieved. The chronological arrangement of the work charts the progression of his thorough exploration of the photographic potential of the undraped male and female form. Graceful, though conventional, full-figure compositions evolve into close-ups often emphasizing the smooth swirl of feminine hips. Farber's fashion background shows in the vividly graphic geometry he constructs from pillars, shadows, windows, gauzy drapings and a piano. He emulates the classic interpretations of the nude in which Edward Weston and Ruth Bernhard twisted, turned and abstracted the human form to produce novel and intriguing shapes that confounded and expanded our conceptions of our physical appearance. The nudes in nature take on a mythological aspect, naiads basking reflectively by pools and streams, or transform themselves into classical sculptures decorating a wealthy estate in the painterly tradition of women portrayed as property. A few examples of collage, surrealism and multiple exposure round out a collection proving Farber's versatility. These pictures can be faulted for the cliched sentimentality of some of the conceptions and the almost exclusive use of models with impossibly slim and shapely physiques. But they aren't hard to look at and homage or not, this is very high caliber, disciplined work with contrasting examples showing both originality and wit. The book concludes with an interview and very helpful technical information on the creation of each photograph. Overall, a diverse and superbly crafted set of images.

I bought this for a friend who is not internet savvy, but had asked me if I thought the book was still available. I searched and the rest you know. I was able to view the photo book and I found it to be very professional. Beautiful shots and the recipient of the book was very greatful. Amazon to the rescue. rated *****
an excellent collection of photos.......2000-12-30
this is an excellent collection of photos from a guy, who i never heard of. when i first started looking at this book, i didn't really like the photos. a lot of the reason is because the photos look kind of dated, definately a 70s look. but as i went further into the book and was able to ignore the hairstyles, i could see the work hester put into posing these models. most of the pictures are classically posed. very much like the ancient greek sculptures (i could go into the vocabulary i learned in art history, but i won't). another intersting technique of hester's is that he used the same camera, film, and lighting (more or less) for each of the photos. i have to say, good job.
Absolutely the hands-down best book of nudes ever published!.......1998-01-23
This, and Mr. Hester's previous book of the same title, published two years earlier - in 1973 - contain the finest collection of photographic images ever recorded of the nude, human form. If you are looking for sexually tantalizing images - keep looking - this is not your book. The models are posed (or should I say "unposed") in natural positions, none of which are sexually suggestive. It is also of note that a large percentage, if not a majority, of the models are professional models who graced advertisements in the pages of many notable magazines during the period of this book's publication, such as Look, Life, Gentleman's Quarterly, Esquire, Womens Home Journal, etc. In many photos the models' spouses and children appear with them. You might consider it a "family" book of nudes for the entire family (unless you are terribly inhibited and "uptight"). The fact that approximately ninety-something percent of the photos are black and white does not reduce the quality or lessen the impact imparted to the readers/viewers. Quite to the contrary, Mr. Hester's use of black-and-white images both enhances and lends more power to the book. Since I cannot hope to praise this book adequately, I will stop now and let everyone wish they could find a copy.

Book Description
Autobiographical cartoonist Josh Neufeld takes us on a dramatic tour of places as exotic and different as Thailand, the former Yugoslavia, and New York City. Highlights include Neufeld and traveling companion Sari Wilson on a volunteer expedition to an organic farm in Malaysia, their stint as extras in a Chinese-language Singaporean soap opera, a train trip through war-torn Serbia, and a near-disastrous cave adventure in Thailand. With gentle humor and a keen eye for the revelatory detail, Neufeld explores religion and spirituality, politics and personalities, and the mysteries of everyday life. His stories reflect the backpacker's conflicted feelings: a yearning for adventure mixed with homesickness and a sense of disconnection, trapped in a reality constantly in flux. In the collection's title story, Neufeld illustrates how the tensions and fears involved in travel through a strange country are dispelled by a Thai monk's blessing. In "On a Mission," Neufeld contrasts the viewpoints of American Baptist missionaries in northern Thailand with the traditions of a Buddhist festival. And in "Cremations, Cubicles & Cant," Neufeld juxtaposes his grandmother's Jewish funeral with a Hindu cremation ceremony he witnessed on Bali.

Swimming against a 5-star current........2007-06-11
There are very few graphic travelogues that rise to the level of the industry's prose, a regret, because by almost every capacity the graphic form should be the exemplary of the industry. And in this particular instance, Sari's and Josh's combined vision has all the bite of a couple trying to soften frictions rather than to capitalize on them. The exotic situations they found themselves in did little more than to leave the impression that they weren't pushing beyond their preconceptions - interactions held at arm's length, their cautiously civil demeanor and determination not to offend sapping much of the spark. There is value and entertainment here, but the dynamics of travel have been rendered somewhat tepid.
Compelling, funny, and touching.......2005-05-04
From the remarkably eloquent foreword to the beautifully drawn and written stories, each page of this graphic novel shines. The narratives are subtle and Chekhovian in their ability to evoke emotion and mood. They're also just plain funny. A must-read, especially for anyone who's spent time out of U.S.
Quickly Devoured.......2004-11-28
The humour in this intimately-written graphic novel hits home with its baldly honest, personal stories. Like others, I didn't want the book to end, and found myself slowing the read by spending extra time with the expressive and fabulously rendered comic panels. Very entertaining & excellent to pass on to friends.
Gorgeous book, Perfect title.......2004-11-18
What a lovely book! The title conveys the sense perfectly. These finely drawn stories capture the moments any traveller will recognize, when throwing yourself at the mercy of the world leaves you exposed not only to things mind-blowingly new but also to your own template--sensory memories, childhood perceptions, early hurts and wonderings. Any reader who is interested in travel will appreciate this book, whether or not she usually likes comics. A FEW PERFECT HOURS works on so many levels, I've found myself leaving it out and turning to it again and again.
A fascinating & unusual book .......2004-11-13
"A Few Perfect Hours" isn't the kind of work you can easily peg: A graphic novel, it's also the kind of compelling travel writing that takes you on a journey both inside and beyond yourself, to off-the-beaten-path adventures in countries that no longer exist precisely the way they did when Josh & his wife Sari once traveled the globe. The result is a journey in time as well as one between borders. With pieces ranging from humorous to thought-provoking, Neufeld shows he is as capable of fascinating us with his writing as he is with his illustrations. Both bear up to several visits. In fact, it might be worth reading the whole book through once for the stories, again for the visuals, and at least once more to explore how the two interact.
A tip-off to the care he took inside, Neufeld packaged his work in an impressive form (paper, ink, and front and back matter) that makes "A Few Perfect Hours" a beautiful book that stands apart on the shelf. The result is a very readable, rewarding graphic novel that would be equally perfect tucked in a backpack or lying on a coffeetable.
