David Bailey's name is synonymous with the Swinging Sixties, when fashion photography became big business, and the man behind the camera could become as famous as the celebrities who posed for him. And Bailey was the most famous--the East End boy who became best friends with the Beatles and the Stones, the husband of actress Catherine Deneuve, and lover of model Jean Shrimpton--chronicling them all in a series of unmistakable, unforgettable shots. David Bailey: Birth of the Cool delves into the photographer's archive and reproduces some of his earliest work (the 1959 wedding of a neighbor's daughter was one of his first professional gigs), previously unpublished documentary film stills, and the spectacular images of quintessential '60s mannequins Shrimpton and Penelope Tree introducing mod fashion to Vogue magazine readers. The result is a treasure-trove of images from one of the most exciting periods in the 20th century, when the cult of youth, fame, and glamour was worshipped and--in this case--most beautifully recorded. --Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

A gorgeous and ultra-hip look at the man who recorded the swinging London scene of the 1960s and helped define British cool

Before the age of Tony Blair's Cool Britannia, there was David Bailey--Cockney arbiter of the UK's "Birth of the Cool." When Mary Quant designed the first thigh-skimming mini-dress, when Jean Shrimpton burst on the scene, and when The Beatles took the world by storm, David Bailey had arrived ahead of time to record the scene with his camera. This young photographer emerged from London's tough East End and rose to become England's most famous fashion and celebrity photographer. He lived with Jean Shrimpton, was friends with Mick Jagger, married Catherine Deneuve, and was the inspiration for Michelangelo Antonioni's cinema classic Blow-Up. Now, David Bailey--Birth of the Cool tells the story of his meteoric rise to the top; collects his photographs of the most celebrated models and movie stars, aristocrats, and rock stars of the 1960s; and defines an era for all time.

Complete with Bailey's most famous photographs of Penelope Tree, Michael Caine, and the Rolling Stones, David Bailey--Birth of the Cool features his photographs of the Kray Brothers, the most notorious and glamorous criminals in 1960s London as well as private and unpublished documentary photography. David Bailey--Birth of the Cool is a must for the fashion conscious, photography fans, rock and roll aficionados, and all those interested in Anglo chic.

3 out of 5 stars Goodbye Baby, and Amen.......2002-12-27

In this collection of greatest hits by Swinging London plankholder David Bailey, we get:

Celebrities of the time, including pop artists, pop intellectuals, TV presenters, English film stars, and the emerging British rock glitterati. Of these last Mick Jagger appears the most frequently, evolving from A Portrait Of A Famous Person Taken By David Bailey to the most notorious man in show business by the end of the decade. A close second is fading golden boy Brian Jones. Among the more conventional celebs are Terence Stamp, Michael Caine, and Peter Sellers. Stamp is so young and unformed here that it is hard to recognize him at first; Caine is reduced to a pipe & black frame glasses Everyman; and Sellers' portrait looks like a Roman bust.

Documentary pictures of potato-nosed East Enders, including plenty of studio portraits of crime bosses the Kray brothers. Bailey won their respect for having come from the East End himself and achieving success. But, one photo shows the Kray twins with Bailey sitting in between, visibly hoping not to get bumped off.

Lots of images of the original super-model, Jean Shrimpton, mostly from Vogue layouts but also plenty from other photo dates as well. There is also a generous helping of photographs of model Penelope Tree, whose face Bailey aptly described as "an Egyptian Jiminy Cricket." We also see lots of other perfectly turned out Vogue models.

There are some exotic shots of Nepal and some snaps from his military service in Singapore, but the focus is in the main on early Sixties London. Though the book is not arranged chronologically, one can see his technical development, as he incorporates other photographers' ideas like askew framing, daylight flash, and tent lighting. There is a color section, but gorgeously inky b/w is the star here. Many of the subjects have been shorn of the celebrity that no doubt added to their portraits' impact, but that's no barrier to enjoying this big collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Look.......2002-02-19

Bailey birthed the look and this book is chock a block full of it. It's a visual feast with very littly written clutter. A pity that there just wasn't a bit more...

4 out of 5 stars Trip Back in Time.......2002-01-19

If your'e looking for a book to take a trip back to the late 50's through the 60's this is a good way to get there. The fashion and ad shots of Jean Shrimpton and other models of that era are a kick. Anyone into nostalgia of those times will find this book interesting, David Bailey seemed to be ahead of his time in his style and his photos are thought provoking as well as great pieces of art. He had some great friends (male and female) that became his subjects. I wish there was a book #2 to follow--this book made me want to see more of his work!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Mod Iconography from the Swinging Sixties.......2000-11-04

This exciting book combines portraits and fashion photography to show the revolution of casual coolness that David Bailey brought to both fields. Filled with classic poses of Jean Shrimpton, Penelope Tree, Catherine Deneuve, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones that you will remember, the book is strengthened by many images you have never seen before. Breaking the previous rules for portraits and fashion, Bailey takes us into a hip, exciting world that offers unlimited promise through "spontaneity of gesture."

David Bailey was the classic outsider, looking in. Born to a working class family in London's East End, no career could have been more unlikely. Being a rock musician was the most that young East Enders of that period could hope for. However, his background gave him a fresh perspective that brought originality and life to his work that we all enjoy. His career rose rapidly, being sought after by Vogue within a year of becoming a professional photographer. In fact, he was on contract to Vogue before meeting Jean Shrimpton, with whom he became so closely identified (both for their personal relationship and their work together).

Some of these innovations work better than others. For example, he loved to pose a group with each person tilting in a different plane and then to put the image on the diagonal. Those tend to work quite well. On the other hand, he also liked to cut off the tops of heads (like Alex Katz paintings), and those often make the portraits much less interesting than if you got the whole head. He loved grainy, black-and-white images. These can be a bit too grainy.

The essay by Martin Harrison is a helpful introduction to Bailey's work, and adds considerable value. I encourage you to read and study it in connection with the photographs.

The book contains scenes that Bailey shot of the East End, that heighten the contrast between his former life and his new one. You will also see his first professional work (a wedding) and his first published work (a Sunday Pictorial in 1960). Bailey rose to prominence very quickly, based both on his talent and his eye for the potential of then-unknown, 18-year-old model Jean Shrimpton, who was to become a fashion icon of the period.

Here are some of my favorite photographs in the book:

Jean Shrimpton (Town - 1963; Sunday Mirror - 1964; Queen - January 1964; Queen - February 12, 1964; Vogue - June 1965)

Catherine Deneuve (his later wife) (Brittany - 1966, Vogue - April 1, 1967)

Joy Weston (Sunday Pictorial - 1960)

Franco Zeffirelli (Vogue - 1961)

Scouts (London, 1960)

Sarah Miles (American Vogue - August 1, 1964)

Robert Shaw (Vogue - September 15, 1963)

Marianne Faithfull (September 1964)

Peter Ustinov (Vogue - December 1965)

Shirley MacLaine (Vogue - December 1965)

The Rolling Stones (September 1964)

Mick Jagger (Contact Sheet -- April 1968)

Sue Murray (Vogue - March 15, 1967 and September 1, 1967)

Raquel Welch (Goodbye Baby & Amen, June 1968)

Afer you have finished enjoying this exciting collection and insightful essay, I suggest that you ask yourself where unnecessary formalism is restraining progress in something you do. For example, some churchs still have such formal services that while many are reassured by the familiarity this provides, their hearts are not still touched by it. Having identified this stall, how can you break through to open the doors to informality that will be constructive? Asking people what they are missing from their experiences is a good place to start. Going back to my example of worship, perhaps worship is too much unlike daily life. How can we integrate the two so that we worship as we live?

Be cool!

5 out of 5 stars Studio St. Petersberg by Deborah Turbeville.......2004-03-23

One of the best photography books I've collected yet. This is not your typical subject matter and was refreshing to my eye. I enjoyed the literary quotes as well. I look forward to seeing what other work she has done.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite.......2002-06-05

This book is what the world of photography needs. I go to [local bookstore] and all I see is models, landscape, and the usual [stuff] that everyone thinks photography should be. Deborah is trying to put these words into the pictures. The text is from russian poets/philosophers with a sort of bleak view of the world. If you want to read don't get a photography book. I think she did what she wanted as far as the pictures go. The faces show life the buildings show age. She made the book look the age of the world the poets were writing about. This book couldn't be any more perfect and if you can't appreciate that then please sell your copy to someone who can.

5 out of 5 stars A book that gives you an experience of St. Petersburg.......2001-08-18

Not everyone will like this book of Deborah Tuberville photographs set off by poems from Russia's finest poets. This book of non-specific, mostly black-and-white photos creates a mood, and the essence of St. Petersburg. It is astonishing, and even if you don't like it at first, a second look will bring you back again and again to study how did this book give you an experience of, rather than an image of a place, a time, a feeling you've been there before. There are many many books of photos of St. Petersburg. This isn't like any one of them. It is not difficult to photograph a city the way everyone else does it. This book takes photography into the realm of poetry and projects so much more than an image. Deborah Tuberville has a magic that will attract anyone tired of seeing the same photographs taken year after year by other photographers. This is not Ansel Adams. This is where I hope photography will be as technology makes everyone a good photographer and we all want more from our images. It's the best buy on the Internet.

2 out of 5 stars A little too bleak.......2000-10-15

This is a photography book about St. Petersburg, Russia. There is almost no text. What text there is, is all in CAPITAL LETTERS WHICH MAKES IT THAT MUCH HARDER TO READ. The font color of the text is also close to the color of the pages which makes it still harder to read. Of course, since this is a photography book, the author may not really want the reader to read the text anyway. The photos with a very few exceptions are all black and white. Many of them are grainy, blurred or scratched, apparently to give them an artsy look. The book is a nice contrast to the many coffee table style books about St. Petersburg that only show the beautiful museums and palaces, but on the other hand, it paints a much gloomier picture of St. Petersburg than is justified. Having been to St. Petersburg twice in the past four years, the truth is somewhere in between Turbeville's bleak portrait and the many too rosy portraits painted by so many other books on St. Petersburg. Still, the book does have some examples of very good photography although many of the photos of people are just a little too posed even for a book with the word "studio" in its title. Just remember though, in spite of all the difficulties in St. Petersburg today, sometimes, at least some of the people of St. Petersburg smile. You would never know that, if you only had Turbeville's book.

If Diane Arbus and her mother had shared a similarly warped vision and sense of humor, they might have turned out Mother, a lush, splashy, totally twisted photo album. Photographer Judy Olausen and her 74-year-old mother Vivian--a model with tightly permed blond hair, soft, wrinkled grandmotherly skin, and an extraordinarily expressive face--skewer the clichés of 1950s motherhood and martyrdom. In one shot, Vivian appears as a slightly deranged Betty Crocker, frosting a heart-shaped cake with Valium icing. In another, she's in chains hunched over an ironing board. As the archetypal "Mother Under Pressure," she sports cat glasses, white gloves, and a prim purse while dragging a huge bolder upstairs on her back. In "Shocked by Spock," reading that venerable pediatric bible causes alarm and a near-faint. The collection delivers a wallop of edgy humor and social commentary about women being silenced or squelched in their daily lives and dreams.

Book Description

Now in paperback, the hilarious New York Times bestselling mother-daughter collaboration that rips the stuffing out of the motherhood cult

In the spirit of William Wegman and Cindy Sherman, Mother is a very funny, wickedly satiric collection of portraits of that most sacred institution: Mom. Photographing her own mother using 1950s' inspired props, Judy Olausen turns a lifelong homemaker into a surreal icon of all-American-style domestic submission. From "Mother as Coffee Table" to "Mother as Doormat" or "Roadkill," Olausen creates visual metaphors for Mother's role in the era just preceding the women's liberation movement.

The introduction tells us how Judy was inspired to take these over-the-top photographs and offers the occasional deadpan comments from Mother herself. "People watching us do these things think I'm being tortured by an oddball. But this way, Judy and I spend more time together." An embossed jacket featuring a photograph of Mother adds impact to a gift full of sharp insights and laughs for that very special woman on Mother's Day.

"What William Wegman has done for his dogs, Judy Olausen has done for her mother."--The New York Times Book Review

Mother appeared on The Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsday, USA Today, and New York Times bestseller lists

5 out of 5 stars fantastic mother's day present.......2007-05-15

i gave this book to my mom for mother's day years ago, and recently stumbled across it again. it is a very witty book, the staging is flawless. this is clearly not a derogatory picture of motherhood, it is satire. my mom loved this book, and my fiance is going to give it to his mom this year. it is a great gift for any supermom that has a sense of humor about all of the roles a mother plays.

1 out of 5 stars Truly Saddening..........2000-05-17

I was amazed to find that everyone here found this book to be entertaining and funny-- It's a terribly sad commentary on the lack of respect for a generation (in fact, multiple generations) of women who devoted themselves to their families and attempted to live their lives in a world that often allowed them only rigid roles and often, little choice in how to live their lives at all. Many of those women were brave and strong and devoted in spite of having to give up their own dreams, and sometimes their creativity and individuality. I think that it's a sad commentary on the current generation that they have apparently so little knowledge, understanding and respect for those women--who, in fact, bravely led our generation out of that bondage to the freedoms that we enjoy today.

4 out of 5 stars MY FRIENDS & I LAUGHED OUR -SSES OFF!.......1999-09-11

While on vacation in Provincetown, Mass., my friends and I laughed our asses off as we stumbled upon this satirically funny photojournal. You must have a mother who is/was a housewife/part-time worker/doormat to truly appreciate this book. The fact that her real mother is the model for all of the shots exemplifies and perpetuates the hysterical and lovable, unappreciated role (but in hindsight; truly appreciated) of the housewife/mother of the 50's and trickled into decades to follow.Thankyou to Judy and Vivian and all others involved, for your talent, insight and sharing of one of life's focalpoints, HUMOR...it makes everything make sense!Dominic ChiangoPhiladelphia, Pa.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing model!.......1999-04-29

I photographed my mother alot when she was living, and she was usually cooperative, but complained about the results of the candids. I cannot imagine her having been willing to follow the directions that Judy Olausen gave to her mother! (Oh well, she was used to appearing in the charming portraits painted by her father, F.C. Frieseke *, when she was young.) I do hope that Vivian is sharing in the royalties. Her work as model... and mother... is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic. Funny. Much better if you read the Intro........1999-01-11

I LOVED this book from start to finish. I use it in some of my psychology courses (gender roles, etc.). The pictures are more than interesting and funny. The introduction really helps you to get a lot more out of the book. I envy the relationship Judy and Vivian Olausen have created with each other! I'd love to photograph my mother strapped to the top of a car with antlers!

1 out of 5 stars A collection of tacky suburban photographer's lobbies.......2007-05-17

What a disappointment! The author roamed America to take pictures of tacky professional photographers' interiors. I expected to find serious professional photographic equipment in high-ceiling rooms with beams and lamps and reflectors, but all there is in the book are pictures of lobbies, waiting rooms and gardens with cheap gazebos to shoot marriage pictures. Even as an interior decoration book it would be a gross failure. The only possible reader I can imagine for such a book would be for an American rural portrait-and-marriage photographer to get an idea of how his colleagues suites are arranged.

5 out of 5 stars Male Perfection .......2005-08-16

Like its companion piece, IN THE STUDIO, Tom Bianchi's photography takes the male image to new heights. Highly erotic in nature, there is NO self-consciousness on the part of the models. Rather, they seem to be having a genuinely good time as they work with Bianchi. ANOTHER MASTERPIECE.

4 out of 5 stars IDEALIZED GAY MALE FORM.......2002-12-15

Anyone who loves the male form will love Bianchi's Out of the Studio. This photographer is not erotic, romantic, nor pornographic. Rather he is narcissistic in the best classical Greek tradition. To admire perfectly developed male bodies, and perhaps draw them, this is the book to buy. But after awhile these beauties become much like Lil' Abner and the other beautiful men of Dogpatch, USA-- too self absorbed.

    3 out of 5 stars Self-Loving Erotic Photography.......2000-06-11

I was given this book by a friend thinking I would be titalated by the photographs. While the men pictured are photographed well for the most part (and are quite attractive), I was disturbed by how Mr. Bianchi photographs himself and appears to be having sex with a model in one of the images. It leads me to believe there is more happening here than just a love of photography. And since Mr. Bianchi has acknowledged publicly that he is HIV +, I wonder what these sexual encounters say to the public. The quality of the photographs are great, though. :)

From the Oregon Historical Society, "The Art Perfected: Portraiture from the Cronise Studio" is a valuable resource. Soft bound, consisting of 109 photographs. This book is exceedingly affordable, considering that the lot are clearly captured and cover the spectrum of late Victorian society. The dates are between 1902-1916. Details of clothing are remarkably visible. Inside, children, high society, working class, the military, immigrant, entertainers, baseball players, liberated women in pant suits, families, and the elderly. A little bit of every group. All are formally posed photographs. Some even pose with with bicycles, musical instruments, or even pets. My favorites, a woman posing in a costume for the Fourth of July 1904, a glamourous looking "Gibson Girl" dated 1902, a stunner of a beauty in tafetta also dated 1902, a sweet portrait of a little boy in formal attire, complete with cane and top hat, two very elegant ladies in gowns on plates 73 and 74. There is something for everyone here.

When three Digimon fans end up with real Digimon, they discover that taking care of a living creature is much more work than dealing with a few pixels on the TV screen. 5 out of 5 stars A fine additon to the Digimon canon.......2005-11-09

After the fiasco that was the 02 manga, practically anything would seem good in comparison! Lucky for us, Digimon Tamers has genuine quality. As Izzy would say, it's "Prodigious!"

I've only read Vol. 1 (I'll edit this when I finish the series), but I like what I've read so far. Basically, this volume tells the familiar story of how Takato, Rika, and Henry met their partners Guilmon, Renamon, and Terriermon, and the trails and tribulations they had while learning to get along. Though there are no new storylines, the animé has been skillfully adapted, and in some cases improved. You won't see any out-of-place jokes in this manga. Don't get confused, there's plently of humor, but unlike the forced humor used in the TV series it comes naturally, making the jokes actually seem, lo and behold, funny! As the humor comes naturally, so does the characterization: These are the exact same personalities you came to know and love in Digimon 03. You won't see any jive-talking Davis in this manga! :)

The Digimon Tamers manga is a return to form. After the ineptly written Zero Two saga, it's good to see that the people in charge are taking the effort to make decent Digimon manga again.

            5 out of 5 stars Digimon Tamers.......2004-06-05

Does the manga artist just not like Season 02? It's definitely one of my favorites. Season 02, of over 50 episodes was covered in two volumes. That's not a proper treatment, that's barely a summary.

However, they seem to overcome this problem here in Tamers. This volume takes us up to Episode 11 - Much Ado about Musyamon. The jokes are great - the author seems to love Calumon and Terriermon. Has interesting info cut from the dub, Writing is good. And the art is great. If you like Tamers, I think you'll like this. Tamers wasn't my favorite series but I enjoyed this and wait for the next volume. Wonder if they'll do Frontier too.
