Book Description
The many uses of beautiful bamboo Besides feeding pandas and making a yummy addition to many Asian dishes, bamboo is also used as a building material, both functional and decorative. The dried stems are extremely sturdy and lend themselves to a multitude of uses. Shigeru Ban, for example, found a way to create lumber from laminated woven bamboo for a house he designed in Beijing. Other houses show off bamboo in more straightforward ways, lining the ceilings or floors with stems, or even forming walls. Bamboo is also used to construct furniture, lending a chair or a bed a warm, earthy feeling. This unique look book captures the many uses of bamboo in houses throughout China, Japan, and Indonesia.

Bamboo Design Inspiration.......2007-07-25
I was given this book as gift by Joerg Stamm a famous bamboo builder. It is one of the most popular books in our library in our sales and design office. Shot mostly in Bali area (I think) it is a great photo essay of design possibilities using bamboo materials. Since it is what we do for a living we are always looking for ideas to help us create new tropical sanctuaries for our customers. I recommend it highly for design ideas, and a fine coffee table book filled with delicious images sure to inspire.

Vietnamese Boat People, 1954 and 1975-1992
ASIN: 0786417145 |
Book Description
This comprehensive review of the gulag system instituted in communist Vietnam explores the three-pronged approach that was used to convert the rebellious South into a full-fledged communist country after 1975.
This book attempts to retrace the path of these imprisoned people from the last months of the war to their escape from Vietnam and explores the emotions that gripped them throughout their stay in the camps. Individual reactions to the camps varied depending on philosophical, emotional and moral beliefs. This reconstruction of those years serves as a memoir for all who were incarcerated in the bamboo gulags.

One can be both Man and Butterfly- Transcend Paradox!.......2004-12-13
While reading this second book in the author's _Chronicles of the Tao Trilogy_ it repeatedly occurred to me that it lacked the depth and meaning of the first volume. It seemed to have degenerated to a martial arts morality play. However, having finished reading the last section, I now see that I was wrong. This is even more powerful than the first book, for it is a tale of slipping from the Path of the Tao having once touched upon it. It is a story of striving, falling, and re-ascending.
The book starts with some excellent discussions on the nature of Taoism and the Tao. But after that it quickly switches to a description of martial arts training and how it intersects with the spiritual lives of the monks of Huanchan. Indeed, the pride of some of the monks, even the Grand Master, at meeting and defeating any and all challengers seemed very... questionable. Then Saihung was given a quest by the Grand Master- to track down and bring back a former student of the monastery who has gone into the world to become a thief, a slaver, and a murderer. And so he sets out on his knightly quest among the last remnants of the old martial order in a corrupt and decaying society. He travels through both the criminal and martial underworlds to find his quarry. It is along the way that he finds that not even a knight who is pure of heart can use force and killing without paying a heavy inner price.
It is after the completion of this quest that Saihung once again leaves the monastery- and finds himself drawn into the same criminal underworld as his former prey. He finds himself drawn by the dark Tao into a life of force, pride, and sensation. He sinks so low as to become an actor in traditional Chinese opera because he is addicted to applause and adoration. It is there that he encounters two legendary wandering Taoist Immortals and realizes the error of his ways. It is in the last section of the book that the most profound lessons come. He sees the proper place of lesser teachings and lesser realities in following the Path. He learns to look beyond mere technical knowledge, intellectualism, and the letter of sacred literature- and to not confuse them with the goal. It is here that he reconnects with the Tao.
Once again, after reading this book I have absolutely no doubts that the author has studied with a true Master.
A thoroughly entertaining work of fiction.......2003-04-11
A great continuation of the first volume, very entertaining, marred only by the false portrayal of this as series as non-fiction. I strongly recommend the first two volumes of the trilogy.
Book Description
Based on new archival research in many countries, this volume broadens the context of the U.S. intervention in Vietnam. Its primary focus is on relations between China and Vietnam in the mid-twentieth century; but the book also deals with China's relations with Cambodia, U.S. dealings with both China and Vietnam, French attitudes toward Vietnam and China, and Soviet views of Vietnam and China. Contributors from seven countries range from senior scholars and officials with decades of experience to young academics just finishing their dissertations. The general impact of this work is to internationalize the history of the Vietnam War, going well beyond the long-standing focus on the role of the United States.

Book Description
Summoned late at night to the Bureau, Quiller attends a secret conference with the foreign secretary and a surprise defector: the Chinese ambassador to Britain. Minutes later, shots ring out and the ambassador's body is flung out onto the sidewalk of a deserted London street, riddled with bullets.
Searching for clues, Quiller flies to Calcutta to meet Sojourner, a key ally in the plan to bring democracy to China. But Sojourner is killed...thus two men, both dedicated to bringing freedom to their country, are dead. No wonder Quiller is skeptical about his next mission: smuggle a Chinese dissident into Tibet.

Welcome addition to scholarship and readable too.......2001-04-25
The ensemble tradition of South China is too little known, both in the West and China. Prof. Witzleben's book is a highly readable introduction to this music and the people who make it. Although the music, complex heterophony, requires virtuoso technique, many of the musicians are gifted amateurs, factory workers as well as world famous conservatory professors. In this repect it is a uniquely Chinese endeavor. Prof Witzleben does an excellent job placing the music in its social context....

Who will profit when (and if) mainland China goes capitalist in the next century? Not American or European companies, despite their strong desire to invest here. Most of the rewards will flow to expatriate Chinese who fled from Communism in 1949. The authors contribute to the pioneering work of Thomas Sowell's Migrations and Cultures and Joel Kotkin's Tribes in showing how ethnic ties fuel economic prosperity.
Book Description
The Bamboo Network shows how a remarkable group of ethnic Chinese families has been the driving force behind China's transition from communism to capitalism: the economic miracle" that took the Western business world by surprise. Murray Weidenbaum, a leading international economist, and Samuel Hughes trace the history of these enterprising leaders, who fled the mainland after the Communist takeover in 1948 and settled through out Southeast Asia. Following in the tradition of generations of expatriate Chinese merchants, they began establishing small family businesses. Today, the authors show, these have expanded into conglomerate business empires. Entrusting corporate divisions almost exclusively to relatives, and dealing extensively with fellow expatriates, these entrepreneurs have formed close-knit and formidable business spheres throughout Southeast Asia -- a "bamboo network."
Members of the bamboo network were well-positioned to do business in China when this first became possible: since they "speak the language," both literally and culturally, they were favored as business partners by the both the Chinese government and the emerging private sector. They have been financing and often managing the development of manufacturing, banking, and other key industries in China.
Western investors and entrepreneurs seeking to enter the Chinese market are a step behind the members of the bamboo network. This book evens the score. Weidenbaum and Hughes show how private enterprise can thrive in China, providing unrivaled insight into the philosophy and culture that inform doing business there. The Bamboo Network will be indispensable reading for those who wish to crack the world's largest market and investment opportunity. For, despite the serious domestic problems likely to arise within the region, overseas Chinese business families will no doubt continue to take advantage of changing threats and opportunities in the fastest-growing and most competitive economy in the world. Whether as friends or rivals of the bamboo network, Americans must learn more about this exotic sector of the global marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
Superficial Coverage.......2001-02-01
This book is a good primer for those unfamiliar with the workings of China's economy and the reforms of the last decade that have fuelled China's growth. It is badly dated now (no fault of the authors) due to the Asian financial crisis. The biggest disappointment is that is deals very little with the book's supposed topic, the role of the overseas Chinese. The last half of the book doesn't even mention them! (well, barely...)
Excellent book but very dated.......2000-03-21
This book is a classic, but the Asian crisis has dated it badly. Also, the author has much anecdotal matter to back up his story, but he did not have intimate access to the Overseas Chinese top managers and this shows. For an intimate account of how the networks operate, and how strategic decisions are made I strongly recommend "New Asian Emperors: the Overseas Chinese, their Strategies and Competitive Advantages" by George T. Haley et al. to supplement this book.
This book needs immediate revision.......1998-01-19
The style of this book is a bird's-eye view gleaned primarily from newpaper reports (as judged by the bibliographic citations). It begins with a delineation of the most visible Overseas Chinese entrepreneur "families." Then it abruptly swerves into an anecdotal rambling about Mainland China's boom economy and how one can not do business there without buying favors from Communist Party officials or from the People's Liberation Army. The reason this book needs a new edition is that its publication predated current "Asian" scandals. One of the ("Indonesian") families showcased by the authors has been in the news for the last year as being the alleged bankroller for "Asian" connected illegal Democratic campaign contributions via bag people who do not appear to have the means to make $100,000 contributions. Likewise, this book reveals why it should not surprise the American Public that the President of the United States has met with arms dealers alleged to be in the employee of the People's Liberation Army. The authors' narrative enables me to make more educated guesses about the real mission of restaurantuer Charlie Tri and the top security clearance trade specialist John Huong. I am rating this book as "average" because it strikes me as a thinly disguised public relations effort to promote more U.S. direct investment in Mainland China "before we miss the boat." It clearly is not a scholarly effort. Read this book for a quick intro to the players, but move on to books with more depth: this arena is important to understand (whatever your world view or prejudices).
Good insight into the Asian-Chinese corporate system........1997-04-12
If you believe in the economic miracle in the new 21st Pacific Century, this is the book to read. It is the "New Industrial Revolution" in the making.
It is essential to understand how the "Guanxi" or "network" system works in Asian-run corporations.

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on bamboos in China face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying bamboos to China? How important is China compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of bamboos vary from one country of origin to another in China? On the supply side, China also exports bamboos. Which countries receive the most exports from China? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for bamboos in China. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for bamboos for those countries serving China via exports, or supplying from China via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where China fits into the world market for imported and exported bamboos. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for China in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that China is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize China compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

He is the author of Hiking the Endless Mountains (0-8117-2648-7) Detailed descriptions of 37 trails Information on terrain, difficulty, precautions, contacts Directions to each trail and descriptions of features along the trek
Customer Reviews:
Hiking in My own back yard.......2007-09-10
I did not know that PA had so many trails that can be day hiked or for weeks on end. This is a good place to start if you want to see if you can handle it before trying to hike th AT all the way.
A+ for Jeff.......2006-09-01
Backpacking Pennsylvania does exactly the job the title leads you to believe it will do. 37 major trails are described and made accessible to the the Pennsylvania Backpacker.
Each trail narrative is preceded by a chart summarizing 13 "want-to-know" items for the trail: its length, approximate time needed for the trip, a difficulty rating, typical terrain and trail conditions, blazes, water supply, area vegetation, trail highlights, maintaining organizations, sources of maps/guides/contact information, and trailhead directions.
The trails are divided into seven geographical regions, with a map for each region showing the counties and general layouts and locations of the trails there. For each of the 37 trails, another map shows the local roads, towns, creeks, parks, and potential campsites and vistas. The narratives are sufficiently detailed that backpacker armed with this book would be able to save the purchase of many individual trail guides and maps, though these would offer more in-depth information on the history, geology, or other particulars.
This book is a great guide for planning backpacking ventures of appropirate duration, difficulty, and location in the Keystone state. I most recently backpacked the Bucktail Path and found Jeff's summary to be quite on-target. It should be in every Pennsylvania backpacker's library.
jmitch does it again!!!.......2005-03-16
Jeff Mitchell's dusty boots had already covered new ground when he wrote "Hiking the Endless Mountains" - the first hiking book to explore the beautiful forests and creeks of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains. Written by the Pennsylvania native, "Backpacking Pennsylvania, 37 Great Hikes" has now established Mitchell's books as the most current and definitive guide series for hiking and backpacking throughout Pennsylvania. In "Backpacking Pennsylvania", Jeff travels beyond the Allegheny Plateaus to provide concise and well-written trail descriptions. Just enough information is provided for each trail system and Mitchell leaves it to the reader to put his book down and to just start hiking!
Jeff Mitchell's Preface in "Backpacking Pennsylvania" is a righteous testamony to those special places which are rapidly disappearing in the 21st Century. "By respectfully visiting and experiencing these places, we can appreciate and protect them" and "Backpacking reintroduces people not only to nature, but also to each other".
Excellent Intro to PA's Surprising Outdoor Opportunities.......2005-02-09
Yes it's possible, in "industrialized" Pennsylvania of all places, to hike for days without seeing a single other person, and outdoor enthusiasts from throughout the Northeast should be more familiar with the Pennsylvania backpacking experience. I'm a native of the state who has been seriously hiking and backpacking for years, and I'm still continually amazed by the variety and extensiveness of Pennsylvania's long-distance hiking trails. Amid the state's surprisingly remote and wild areas are dozens of trails that exceed 20 miles in length, and several that surpass 100 miles. There is far more to Pennsylvania backpacking than the famous Appalachian Trail, which Jeff Mitchell accurately describes as one of the least interesting trails in the state. This book is not meant to be a true guide for any of the trails described, but summarizes the long-distance hiking opportunities available. Therefore, unless you really know what you're doing, following trails with this book will be difficult given its abbreviated travelogues and very non-detailed maps, so don't try to do an extensive trip *only* with this book. Detailed trail guides and/or maps are usually available elsewhere.
What makes this book a real winner is an outstanding introduction concerning various backpacking issues and challenges, and excellent geographical info for each trail described, especially in terms of trail conditions, locations of trailheads, and contact information. I have completed several of Pennsylvania's long-distance trails, especially in the central and north-central regions of the state, and given Mitchell's knowledgeable and accurate writing I can attest that he has either hiked these trails himself or has talked extensively with people who have. For this reason I am confident about his descriptions of the trails I haven't yet tackled, and you should be too. So if you're in Pennsylvania but are unaware of the adventures in store, this book is an outstanding introduction to our vast backpacking opportunities. [~doomsdayer520~]
