In the third edition of her successful textbook, Paula Rudall provides a comprehensive yet succinct introduction to the anatomy of flowering plants. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, the book covers all aspects of comparative plant structure and development, arranged in a series of chapters on the stem, root, leaf, flower, seed and fruit. Internal structures are described using magnification aids from the simple hand-lens to the electron microscope. Numerous references to recent topical literature are included, and new illustrations reflect a wide range of flowering plant species. The phylogenetic context of plant names has also been updated as a result of improved understanding of the relationships among flowering plants. This clearly written text is ideal for students studying a wide range of courses in botany and plant science, and is also an excellent resource for professional and amateur horticulturists.

    Book Description

The study of plant development using molecular and genetic techniques is rapidly becoming one of the most active areas of research on flowering plants. The aim of this book is to present a sense of the accomplishments of the past and of the outstanding problems of the future in the study of plant development. An important feature of this book is the integration of results from molecular and genetic studies on various aspects of plant development in a cellular and physiological context. Of particular interest to readers will be the clear treatment of each landmark stage in the life cycle of plants such as seed germination, seedling growth, flowering, gametogenesis, pollen-pistil interactions, embryogenesis, fruit ripening, and seed and bud dormancy. The book also considers the development of individual plant organs such as the shoot, leaf, root and flowers as well as alternate developmental strategies of plants.

    Book Description

This profusely illustrated book provides comprehensive coverage of the immense variation in the external structure of flowering plants. It defines the innumerable details of growing and mature plants, describing their leaves, flowers, roots and seeds in a manner that will enable professionals
and amateurs alike to identify many difficult features. The book also explains much of the terminology that is used in advanced botanical texts and reference books, but rarely explained for novices. The unique and extensive collection of color photographs and stunning original line drawings add to
the fascination of this useful work. By focusing on morphological features, which are often passed over in anatomically-oriented texts, this volume will be a valuable resource for all students and professionals in botany, horticulture, and forestry, as well as anyone interested in the amazing
    variety of plant forms.

    4 out of 5 stars Illustrated compendium.......2000-05-05

"This book is intended [to provide an] attractive and workable compendium of flowering plant morphology ..." [quote from cover]. It certainly does this; in 341 pages richly illustrated with captivating color photographs and exquisite line drawings. An academic yet attractive overview of the immense variety of form that has evolved in Angiosperms.

First published in 1991, reprinted in 1993 (with corrections), reprinted 1998. This last edition, compared to the 1991 original, is printed on slightly yellower paper and is a little more 'black' in print, taking away something from the beauty of the photographs and the crispness of the printed text.

        Book Description

For the first time in synoptic form, this book presents a clear account of the most recent knowledge of embryogenesis in flowering plants. A multidisciplinary approach is adopted bringing together the foundations of tissue culture, biochemistry, and cell and molecular biology which have supported the rapid progress of research in angiosperm development. In the first part of the book, the author draws a broad picture of the processes involved in embryogenesis. A brief introduction to procedures is followed by chapters on developmental, cellular, biochemical and experimental aspects of embryogenesis, and on somatic and pollen embryogenesis. Later sections on the regulation of gene expression and mechanisms of programming developmental information precede a treatment of some practical applications resulting from the study of embryos. Two techniques discussed which are aimed towards the goal of enhancing crop productivity in a dynamic and expanding field are embryo rescue from inviable crosses and preservation of germ plasm.

Great book if you are doing a reef study and need to identify the correct names for all the creaters. Great photo's and helpful hints on purchasing equipment, but for the average weekend or resort snorkeller it can get boring to read. However, the book is worth having.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable acquisition for the South Pacific diver.......1998-07-25

Before my recent dive trip to Fiji I looked for a good fish ID book for the area (one with photos, not paintings) and came up short. It doesn't seem like anyone has done a comprehensive reference for this area comparable to Humann's works on the Caribbean.

However, I did find Paddy Ryan's fine volume in the lending library at the resort where I was staying. To my surprise, I find it to be much more than the typical, superficial "snorkeler's guide." It's a small but beautifully produced volume with excellent photography and a well-written text. It's a good balance of photos to help identify the most common South Pacific reef fish combined with informative text on the behavior and biology of reef fish, other vertebrates, and invertebrates.

I didn't buy a copy when I had a chance in a local shop, and I regretted it on the long flight home. I'm buying my personal copy as soon as I finish writing this. Take my word for it, for snorkelers, novice divers! , or serious divers, this is money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent diving resource.......2000-06-20

The book featured is an excellent Lonely Planet guide. It has been written taking into consideration low budget travellers and presents sites for divers in the Red Sea around locations including the popular Sharm el Sheikh and Ras Muhammed, Eliat and the Brothers. The information on each site includes: depth and visibility; required expertise; bottom terrain; currents; marine life; safety tips; and local dive shops. Most of the chapters are easy to read and actually are very well written. However, some of the tips are a little bit outdated (the book was written in 1994). In any case, it is cheap and very useful.

As the editor of a new, fully revised edition of this title that is currently in process, I would like to say that New Holland Publishers have been made fully aware of the errors contained in this book, and apologise sincerely to readers of the exisiting edition. The revised edition has been worked on throughly by Jack Jackson, the renowned author of numerous other diving books that have received 5-star reviews by Amazon readers, and shall be available in bookshops at the end of the year.

I would also like to thank Ned Myddleton for his specific comments, and would like to assure him that these had been picked up on and that they have been corrected. However, if Ned would like to send any further corrections to myself (kate@nhpub.co.uk) then please do so over the next two weeks (until May 1).

                  2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing........2001-02-25

If I was judging this book purely on the underwater photographs, I would have no hesitation in awarding a 5 Star rating. Without that standard of photography, the book would have received nothing at all.

I ordered this book because I needed to know more about certain areas of the Egyptian Red Sea I was due to visit. Since then, I have conducted professional assignments to three different regions and each time I found the book to be of limited value. This is purely a reference book and, with 52 pages devoted to the principle sites of Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Eritrea combined and a full 64 pages devoted to Egypt, I began to wonder about how much original information I would find in this book... The answer was "Not a lot."

The layout is generally very good but, for those photographs that are captioned, descriptions such as "A wave breaking on a healthy reef of stony corals" (stony corals. What are they?) or "Divers exploring the wreck of a cruising yacht in the Deep South" (a yacht, incidentally, that is not mentioned anywhere else in the entire book.), left me somewhat bemused.

The book is packed with the sort of information one needs to know. Unfortunately, I soon found myself mistrusting almost everything written. All writers and publishers have a duty of care towards the reader and it is vitally important that the "general information" on such topics as Culture, Religion, Climate, Visas etc are correct. It is also important that the Diving information is accurate and well-researched. Because this latter element of the book (and after all, it is a "Diving Guide.") is lacking in so many areas, it brings into question the accuracy of all the information given.

Take for example the Sudanese shipwreck described as the "Labanzo." For the record the correct name is "Levanzo" - a vessel built in 1901 and lost in 1940. The book also contains that perennial favourite the "Sarah H" in Egypt. When this shipwreck was first discovered her true identity was unknown and the finders promptly named her after their own diving guide Sarah Hillel. The ship's real name is, of course, the "Kingston" - something that has been known to Divers with a knowledge of the area for something like 10 years before this book was published...

On the "Up" side, I did find the vast majority of the underwater images to be quite outstanding - almost all of which are by Alex Misiewicz - whose work I have long admired. Sadly, many of the surface shots appear to be very old and out-of date and the only photograph attributed to the author is one of a camel...

This book has the potential to be an excellent guide but somebody needs to go back to the proof reading stage, remove the glaring errors, double check all the facts and update the surface photography before we can put our faith into this product. As I said "Very Disappointing."

                    Product Description

For five millennia people have gathered along the shores of the Red Sea, but only in the past five decades have recreational divers delved beneath the waves. They flock here to explore the incredibly diverse underwater topography and marine life, as well as shipwrecks such as the Thistlegorm and the wrecks of Shaab Abu Nuhas. On land visitors can wander ancient ruins and buzzing souqs or tour the desert atop a camel. From the towering walls of Ras Mohammed to the offshore islands of The Brothers and Zabargad, this book describes 108 of the best Red Sea sites, with full-color photos throughout.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2001-07-04

Compared to the other Red Sea dive guides I've been able to find, this one is the best by far. The photos are fantastic and the maps are very readable - and the text gives an excellent overview of the dive site conditions and highlights. The descriptions seem balanced and informative, and if the site isn't the greatest, it says so ("hard corals are not a strong point here..." and for a wreck dive - the Salem Express "...take a look, spare a thought for the victimes and then head to the nearby reefs."). Based on my 5 dive trips in the RS, it looks very accurate as well.

2 out of 5 stars Covers a lot, but not enough, and "too shallow"..........2001-05-28

There's some good things about this book: in typical Lonely Planet style you've got great general travel information for the area (which if I really wanted, I'd buy a general travel book).

It does also cover a large number of sites - though is still far from comprehensive.

And it has some nice additional information occasionally through the book.

Two main peeves though. And they're killers:

                    - Each description is a paragraph, or two at most. You can't tell me very much about a dive site in so few words.

                    - There are no maps / diagrams for specific dive sites (just area overview maps) - a dive guide fails totally without these.

It's a pretty book, but to be any use you need to include maps and more detail per site (if this was done it could be forgiven for not being totally comprehensive).

In short, it's nice, but it's no use as a tool for researching a dive holiday.

What'S further is I now own two of these (Red Sea and Bahamas) - I certainly will not buy another.
