    Book Description

Native Americans called the area Couxsaxrage, “beaver hunting ground.” Professor Ebenezer Emmons named it Adirondack, after one of the native tribes. Along the Adirondack Trail traces the history and lore of the Adirondacks up the scenic roadway through the heart of New YorkÂ's mountain-and-lake country. Included are tales of the Mohawk Indians and their beatified princess, Tekakwitha; the site of the mansion of Sir William Johnson, one of AmericaÂ's most influential citizens of the 1700s; and an important battleground of the Revolution.

        Book Description

        Praise for Cindy Ross's A Woman's Journey:

"Ross lets readers into her heart."Publishers Weekly

"A beautiful book, a wonderfully fascinating narrative."Annie Dillard

A true account of a family's five-year adventure in the untamed wilderness of the American Rockies

The Continental Divide Trail, a rugged, 3,100-mile footpath running along the crest of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico, is infamous for its tricky mountain passes and snowy traverses. In 1993, Cindy Ross, her husband, and their two toddlers, ages one and three, set out together on the Trail. Using llamas as kid-carriers and packers, they successfully hiked the entire Trail over the next five summers, covering the last 700 miles on tandem mountain bikes in 1998.

In Scraping Heaven, Cindy Rossthe author of four critically acclaimed booksdeftly interweaves evocative descriptions of the landscape with dramatic accounts of sudden snowstorms, gale winds, and wildlife encounters. Through it all, her intimate reflections on marriage, family, and children provide contrapuntal depth and interest far beyond the high Rocky Mountain peaks.

3 out of 5 stars It couldn't have been done without endorsements!.......2007-02-21

My first reaction was why would anyone want to take two very young children on such a trail? The logistics alone were death-defying: baby food, cloth diapers...and five years to complete the struggle. Couldn't they have waited until the kids were potty-trained?

Although nicely written, with a unique topic, I'm not sure I can admire people who undertake such endeavors because they have to beg corporations for the finanicial support. And that alone makes one dependent on someone or something else to finish such a journey. I got the feeling at times the book was to endorse pack animals rather than hiking with young children through the wilderness.

5 out of 5 stars Scraping Heaven- Among the Best.......2003-03-13

I had no idea when I began reading "Scraping Heaven" that it would be such an exciting story, so full of love and emotion. I have long been a fan of true adventure books and have read many, and the best. And "Scraping Heaven" is now included among those I will recommend to friends. I thought it was so brave of Cindy to include the issues of her heart- to question her parenting skills, to examine her marital relationship. Who among us hasn't done that at some point, but NOT for public scrunity! It took courage to be self-critical, and to be honest about what she wanted from her husband, her children, and her life. There were times when I laughed out loud, and times when I shed tears for her.
I was pleased to read in the epilogue that her sense of adventure has not waned, and that she continues to seek out exciting ways in which to relate to nature. Perhaps one day Cindy will write another book, dealing with how she is living life to its fullest.

        5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2003-03-06

In an age when children are being raised on Teen Nick, Disney World and Bart Simpson, Cindy offers an alternative. Expose your chilren to the rain in life so they'll appreciate the rainbows, whatever they may be. Gratitude is the natural result. And, isn't that what we all wish for with our own children? As for Todd...well you have your hands full. Well written, Really inspiring!

        5 out of 5 stars A long-distance trek testing hearts and minds.......2003-03-04

Two long-distance hikers who have spent a lifetime hiking tackle the 3,100-mile Continental Divide Trail -with children in tow - in Scraping Heaven, an involved and involvingly dramatic story of a long-distance trek testing hearts and minds. Any interested in stories of survival and the outdoors will find Scraping Heaven to be a thoroughly moving, intensely memorable account of a family's impossible endeavor.

        1 out of 5 stars A Dissapointment.......2003-02-24

When i first saw this book on the bookshelf I was excited about reading the very appealing story of this family and the way they journeyed along the Contintental Divide Trail. I very much enjoy reading outdoor adventure books such as Bill Bryson's "A Walk In the Woods" and Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air". Both excellent and well written stories.

I picked up this book with similar expectations. I was very dissapointed to say the least. The story was redundent, not well written and extremely self-indulgent. Another problem I had with this book was the constant projection of thoughts and feelings onto her husband and children. Instead of telling a compelling story of long distance hiking with her familiy, friends and llamas, the author tries too hard to create a platform for her contrived introspection. She ends up portraying herself as very narcissistic.

        My recommendation: Save your money.

3 out of 5 stars A Concise but Incomplete Guide to Virginia's National Forests.......2005-11-12

Spanning much of western Virginia, the combined George Washington and Jefferson National Forests provide some of the best and most abundant hiking in Virginia. Being an avid hiker and planning to spend a few months in central Virginia, I chose to purchase this guide to give me some hiking ideas. Unfortunately, I was not particularly happy with what I got.

This guide describes trails from 10 selected areas in the national forests. While the selected areas range geographically from Big Schloss in the north to Mount Rogers in the south, all of the areas selected are remote wilderness areas. Many excellent dayhiking trails (such as the Cascades Trail near Blacksburg) are left out. While some people enjoy long wilderness dayhikes or backpacking trips, many hikers (such as myself) prefer more manageable dayhikes. Due to the areas selected for description, very few hikes in this book fit into that category. While it would be impossible to describe all of the national forest trails in 193 pocket-sized pages, more variety would allow this book to be used by a wider audience.

Normally in my reviews I give a description of what is included with each hike. With this guide, that is somewhat difficult because Karin doesn't really describe hikes. Instead, she simply describes each trail in the selected area, usually giving no indication as to how they might be put together to get a nice loop (or other) hike. The problem with this method is that the author ends up merely recounting facts about the trail rather than describing a hiking experience. As such, while the descriptions contain some good information, it is hard to get a feel for what hiking this trail in person would be like. Also, while each selected area comes with an area map (with contour lines!) and an area overview, you have to be careful relying on her maps: quite a few details are omitted, and frequently the maps have been rotated on the page so as to best fit the shape of the region (so north is not necessarily "up"). Thus, in addition to leaving a lot of hikes out, the descriptions that do appear in this book leave somewhat to be desired.

In conclusion, if you are looking for some detailed information on the wilderness areas in George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, perhaps for a backpacking trip, this guide might be of interest to you. For the rest of us, this guide will be too narrow in focus and too hard to use. Most people should consider one of the 50-hikes books instead of this guide.

I bought two books for my trip to the Smokies. This book and Johnny Molloy's "Day and Overnight Hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park" I tried to use both books, but I consistently returned to Molloys. The Albrights book would be all right to use if you wanted to sit down and read it from cover to cover, or at least a section of the park you want to explore. It is nearly impossible to flip through and find any specific trail. Beside this, their tone especially in the introduction put me off from this book. I think its designed to encourage anyone to try hiking, which is good, but for someone that has hiked for years, it treats me, the reader, as a simpleton, who has never stepped off the pavement in my life. This book is useful, but not as useful or concise as Molloy's guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars Our copy is well-used........2000-05-01

Forty-two walks are detailed in this guide to hiking the Great Smoky Mountains. Numerous other walks are briefly listed at the end of each chapter. Hikes are listed geographically in 11 areas, with two to six hikes per area.

The description for each hike includes the distance, difficulty (easy, moderate or strenuous), elevation (including elevation changes), location of the trailhead, and a description of the walk itself. The descriptions are sometimes rather wordy, but do often include interesting historical or natural information. A trail map is included for most of the walks. The appendix includes a thorough bird list.

We found many very interesting walks in this book. Some of the walks listed are the more popular ones, but there are enough of the infrequently visited trails for those who don't want a lot of company on their excursions.

As the book mentions, it frequently rains in the Smokys. We found ourselves in the rain on several of our walks. However, the book itself doesn't take getting damp as well as I'd like. Yet, even though it's been wet several times, the our copy is still very usable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Photos and Imagination.......2005-12-12

Great photos and the prose was good. As nit-picky a grammar analyst as I can be, this book didn't offend. If there were gramatical gaffs, I don't remember. At any rate, they certainly haven't detracted from my continuing desire to one day own this book. I found the book down to earth and positive, giving me ample fuel to one day follow the footsteps. The feel of each page was vibrant and refreshing and the journal gave the trail photos depth. Instead of word-smithed stock captioning, this approach gave me the opportunity to imaginatively hit this remarkable trail running. The journalist isn't a glory hound and tells it like it is. The narrative left the impression that this journey was more a vison-quest, one that provided clarity and perspective, things I can relate to. The writer's fallability gives him authenticity and makes the book more alluring. The storyline wasn't puffed up and didn't increase my blood pressure, but it kindled a yearning for this incredible and wild part of the country that is likely to lead to more constructive pursuits. The photos stand on their own as the most vivid and interesting ones of this region I've seen. They escape the dullness of travel guides and the unrealistic perspectives of some photo journals. The comforting thing is if the reader decides to trek the Divide, he has a very good chance of seeing these scenes for himself and can use the photos to assess which part of the trail he would like to conquer if a whole month isn't feasible. This is more than a coffee-table book. It's a nice introduction to this untamed bold trail. It lacks pretension and over delivers as a result.

1 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures, Awful Writing.......2004-12-30

This book has beautiful pictures from the CDT but I found the text almost unreadable. Mr. Fayhee's prose is both hyperbolic and facetious. He also can't get his tenses to agree. He acknowledges this particular failing; unfortunately the editor seems not to have restrained any of these bad tendencies.

          4 out of 5 stars A must-buy for anyone moving to SL.......2006-01-02

Unfortunately I read this book after living in the country for 20 months. I found all of the information contained in the book well written, accurate and very useful. My only regret was that I did not read this before coming here as it would have made the 'culture shock' more understandable.

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Helpful!.......2000-05-02

The writer for Culture Shock! Sri Lanka appeared to be very familiar with the country. I am married to a Sinhalese and before we traveled to the country for my first visit, I shared selections from the book with my husband. He was pleasantly surprised that the information was fairly accurate. I referred to the book often during my travels and found it very helpful and right on point.

This guide is better than most. Lots of useful information about cultural differences. It does not contain much tourist information though so it is best used together with a more detailed guide.
