Book Description

Admired by plant enthusiasts, botanists, and nature lovers of all ages, wildflowers comprise one of the most beloved—and diverse—groupings of flora in South Carolina. Although relatively small in size, the Palmetto State hosts a remarkable variety of wildflower species, from the trillium and bloodroot that brighten its forests to heliotrope and common toadflax that dot the state's roadsides and fields. With color photographs (all by Richard D. Porcher) and extensive descriptions of more than 680 species, A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina offers a complete and indispensable reference for finding and appreciating these natural treasures.

Employing the same innovative approach Richard D. Porcher used in Wildflowers of the Carolina Lowcountry, he and Douglas A. Rayner simplify the task of identification by grouping species according to habitat. For each species identified, the authors include interesting facts—many not widely known or readily available—about rarity, suitability for garden cultivation, and origin of common and scientific names.

Of added interest, the botanists share itineraries for more than fifty wildflower expeditions and short essays on a variety of topics, including carnivorous plants, Carolina bays, native orchids, medicinal plants and folk remedies, poisonous plants, edible plants, and the role of fire in natural communities.

Having just moved to the Mountains of North Carolina and an amatuer nature photobrapher, I needed to know where to go for hikes that had great displays of wildflowers. This book appears to be excellant. It isn't spring yet so only time will tell, but I am very hopeful.

    Book Description

Orchids in any setting make for a beautiful sight, but native orchids growing in their natural habitats offer an especially rewarding view for plant enthusiasts, naturalists, and nature lovers of all ages. South Carolina hosts a rich potpourri of these enormously popular wildflowers, thanks in large part to its unique position as the lower boundary of more northerly species and upper boundary of species found in Florida and the gulf states. In Wild Orchids of South Carolina, James Alexander Fowler captures with spectacular photography and encyclopedic knowledge the full glory of the state's native orchid population. From the bogs and bays of the coastal plain to the mountain woodlands, Fowler catalogs rare and widely distributed species, offering a wealth of information for identifying these prized plants.

In addition to providing photographs of each species, Fowler includes common and scientific names, flower descriptions, bloom times, ranges, habitats, pollinators, and refreshingly candid personal observations about the orchids as he encountered them in the wild. He details his experiences of coming upon a show-stopping colony of large yellow lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens) and of locating the rare monkey-face orchid (Platanthera integrilabia).

Paul Martin Brown, a nationally renowned botanist and wild-orchid specialist, provides an introduction to the volume. He explains South Carolina's significance in the larger context of North American orchid habitats and prepares the reader for the striking display of beauty and information assembled in this volume.

A must have compendium of SC species presented in a first-hand accounting of one man's remarkable journey with these plants. Each has a photo of a grouping in situ and closeups of floral parts, there is room for notes and extensive explanations of habitat needs, personal observations, recollections and recommendations for where you might find the plant. This is an exceptional book and I highly recommend it. I recently had an opportunity to correspond with the author and his intoxication with our wild orchids is contageous and enlightening.

    Book Description

This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 species—including one discovered by Bentley and named after him—found in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.

Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.

5 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, colorful guide, but hard to use .......2006-08-20

This guidebook to wild flowers in North Carolina has about 500 species illustrated, each with a description and a small photograph of the flower and plant. The guide deserves high marks for the number of species included and the scholarship which went into describing each by location, blooming date, and other information. Brief tidbits concerning medicinal uses, edibiity, and folklore of the plant are included in many descriptions. Indexed are both scientific and common names of each plant.

However, the guide is nearly worthless for the field identification of flowers. There needs to be some sort of key or pattern to help with identification. There seems no rhyme nor reason I can discern with the order in which the flowers are described. It would be a lot better if the flowers were grouped by blooming date and color, e.g. yellow flowers that appear in May should be together as should purple flowers blooming in September.

So, if you want to go into your backyard and identify what is blooming there you will need a field guide, not this book.

National Geographic have set a whole new standard in travel guides. I have several and I think they are excellent. Generally speaking, travel guides become outdated within a year or so after being published. As a matter of fact, some series are issued annually. They are loaded with information on lodging, hotels,B&B's,and restauralts with lots of data on prices. These things become out-of -date very quickly;and even when you look up rates, you will find most of of little or no interest. Besides these things are easily obtained elsewhere ,for instance on the Net.
Where this guide shines is in the information it gives on all the points of interest. It is loaded with excellent photographs, maps and drawings that we have become accustomed to getting from National Geographic. The book also covers history, culture and everything of interest to a visitor to California. This book is so good that when your trip is over, you will want to keep it as a wonderful memory of all the places you visited. A short time after a trip ,one usually tosses the guide, for the simple reason that it is quickly dated, printed on cheap paper, and is very short on real information and pictures,--Not so this one. You'll want to keep it.
I do a lot of Birding, and have many of the Field Guides that have been published over the years. The most popular guide among Birders is and has been for several years is "Field Guide to the Birds of North America ",published by National Geographic.
They have employed the same methods, skills and quality in this book as their others.
This book will serve you even well after your trip as a reference to California, When reading or hearing news about places,or whatever;you'll find this a good place to look for additional information.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful guide to destinations; could be a bit more detailed.......2006-02-26

Disclaimer: This is my experience with just this one book. I have not extensively used other similar travel books, so I can't compare them much.

I was looking for a book to show me the sights around California and I specifically wanted something with a good mix of pictures and text, as pure textual descriptions can be rather subjective and occasionally unclear (not to mention boring). After a day at the local bookstore, I decided on this one.

This book does an amirable job of combining the two elements. The pictures are descriptive and very helpful in determining which places to visit and the text helps fill in the remaining info. The format is pretty basic: You get a half-page photo of the major destinations along with a few pages of accompanying text describing the place and the surrounding attractions. The book is divided into major geographic areas, such as "Southern California", "Central Coast", and "Northern California"; the major cities (LA, San Fran, San Diego, etc.) also get their own sub-sections. This makes it easy to find information.

Unlike some other guidebooks, this one does not come with maps of every destination -- which is something I actually prefer, since those are usually available at the actual destinations and there's no reason to waste pages on them. However, larger-area maps and driving route maps are included and they're certainly helpful in plotting roadtrips.

More importantly, the included destinations seem to be well-chosen. I took the book with me on a one-week trip along California's west coast and it provided interesting things to see all along the way. I explored most of the destinations it mentioned and I was usually quite happy with the results.

My one gripe with the book is that it doesn't always give enough details about the destinations. Some places get a few pages of text, but others are given only a simple sentence or two. I would really have liked to see more about all the mentioned destinations -- such as photos for even the less important attractions and pricing information for all the mentioned restaurants -- even if it meant a thicker and bigger book. The book wasn't bad; rather, I just wanted more of the same.

As I said above, I haven't been able to use any other similar books so I can't really say how this one compares. This review may be changed or updated in the future if I find better guides. But as for now, I'm very happy with this one on its own and I definitely plan to take it with me on my next trip.

1 out of 5 stars Don't purchase this book used.......2004-09-23

I can't comment on the substance of the book because there's no way to read it. My only advice is that if you purchase the book, DON'T buy a used one from Kudzu Books in Georgia. They ship it via the postal service in a very flimsy envelope. By the time you get it, it will be too mangled to read. Worse, they give no hint as to how to contact them by email or phone. Amazon is no help either.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent trip planner.......2001-02-01

Recently we visited California for the first time. We covered San Francisco, LA and San Diego in one week. We had planned everything before-hand using the National Geographic Traveller and our experience is it turned out very useful in that respect. It exaclty tells you what is a must see and what looks good from where. So we were prepared and we expected certain things. For e.g. this book says that the views from Coit Tower are breathtaking and they really are so. We had to walk up from China Town to Coit Tower on the very steep streets of San francisco. But once we were at Coit Tower the views of the city were excellent. This book also mentions some driving tours which are very useful. One thing I would like to mention here. We had rented a mustang convertible to drive the Calif Highway One along the coast. Our friends recommended to take the 17 mile drive on our way and we were surprised why it was not mentioned in this book. But after driving through the seventeen miles we continued the drive along Highway One. And let me tell you the 17 miles drive is nothing compared to the gorgeous views on Rte One. If you ask me, please avoid the 17 miles drive it is just a rip off of 8 bucks. There is much more beauty ahead on Rte One. We should have listened to the book, the book was right by not mentioning it!

5 out of 5 stars Kudos for National Geographic Traveler books.......2007-01-10

I have found the National Geographic Traveler books to be ideal when planning a visit to a city. The San Francisco book seems up to the usual standards. These books cover the more interesting attractions, including some great photos, and are organized by area, which makes it easier to select what you want to see and plan your days. Another feature which should not be overlooked is the section in the back, which recommends some excellent restaurants.

5 out of 5 stars National Geographic have another winner!.......2006-01-04

If you plan to buy a Guide for San Fransisco, you really owe it to yourself to check out this one.It covers everything you want in a guide and does a supurb job in all respects.First of all the construction is excellent. Nat.Geo.publish a Guide to Birds of North America, and make them so good that they are able to take a phenomenal amount of use and even abuse.Birders get daily use of them for years and I have never seen or heard of one coming apart. If anything, they are built too good-a rare thing today. If one were to use this guide every day,you would still be using it a year later. The paper, printing, color, etc.could not be better. Most travel guides are pretty ratty after a short time and you will be amazed ,that this book will stay in great shape. The detail of information could not be better. It is full of excellent photos, maps, directions, and organized very well.Of course it is excellent as a travel guide, but it will serve as well as an excellent resource to keep handy whenever you want to find information on any historical or other points of interest in the city. There are a lot of great drawings of the interior of buildings, such as the Sutro Baths, museums,Alcatraz,Early History and many neighborhoods and personalities. There is also a section on excursions,The Peninsula & Silicon Valley,Monteray Peninsula,Carmel-by-the-Sea,Berkley,Oakland,Marin County,Napa Valley,Sonoma Valley,Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe. And of course lots of info on travel, accomodations, shopping, dining, and just about anything you'd want to know about one of the most enjoyable cities in North America. Not only will it serve you well when visiting San Francisco, but will also serve as a great way to remember it all.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch encompassing guide for The City.......2003-06-04

This is one of the best guidebooks I have encountered that covers San Francisco as a whole. First of all, the layout is excellent (as one would hope for from National Geographic). The sections for each neighborhood are color-coded for easy access and each neighborhood features a great map that not only highlights attractions, but a feature that shows you where that neighborhood is located within the city--this is enormously helpful in putting the pieces of the city together into a coherent whole, and should be a feature in every city guidebook.

Second, the guidebook includes all major attractions and a number of the minor ones. Descriptions are brief, but adequate. The guidebook excels at giving great tidbits about SF history and of the changing character and culture of its neighborhoods (though be warned that they are slightly racy at times).

Third, the photographs are fabulous and do a great job of highlighting some of San Francisco's sights that must be 'seen'. This is particurarly well-done as the guidebook covers a lot of ground (dedicating space to all major parts of SF, not just the ones most visited) and uses photos to achieve maximum efficiency to convey information to the reader.

My complaints with the guide are few. The hotel and restaurant descriptions are included in their own section in the back. This allows each neighborhood section to be more compact (and accessible) but probably requires a bit more flipping to find a lunch when in a given neighborhood. In addition, the guidebook uses a price coding system that makes it more difficult to figure out how much hotels and restaurants cost (though, in their defense, they do repeat the key to the coding system every other page unlike most guidebooks that hide it somewhere in the introduction).

The other complaints I had were that the section on excursions outside of San Francisco was too rudimentary to be of much use--if you plan to go elsewhere in the Bay Area, you should compliment this book with one that has a better focus on Bay Area attractions. Finally the transit map on the back cover is not helpful. National Geographic tries to represent bus lines as being akin to the London Underground (with no attention to geographic realities)--this representation won't help you catch a bus. Get a Muni transit map once you get to San Francisco.

That being said, if you want a solid guide to the city of San Francisco itself--this guidebook from National Geographic is a good bet.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful guide and a good choice, but there are better!.......2002-05-27

This guide has beautiful photographs and interesting maps of the various sections of the city and would have been perfectly adequate alone, but my wife and I also had Eyewitness Travel Guides'San Francisco and Northern California. I found the information in Eyewitness more relevant and helpful. The real surprise is that the maps provided by Eyewitness were better than the vaunted Geographic!
