Book Description

Admired by plant enthusiasts, botanists, and nature lovers of all ages, wildflowers comprise one of the most beloved—and diverse—groupings of flora in South Carolina. Although relatively small in size, the Palmetto State hosts a remarkable variety of wildflower species, from the trillium and bloodroot that brighten its forests to heliotrope and common toadflax that dot the state's roadsides and fields. With color photographs (all by Richard D. Porcher) and extensive descriptions of more than 680 species, A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina offers a complete and indispensable reference for finding and appreciating these natural treasures.

Employing the same innovative approach Richard D. Porcher used in Wildflowers of the Carolina Lowcountry, he and Douglas A. Rayner simplify the task of identification by grouping species according to habitat. For each species identified, the authors include interesting facts—many not widely known or readily available—about rarity, suitability for garden cultivation, and origin of common and scientific names.

Of added interest, the botanists share itineraries for more than fifty wildflower expeditions and short essays on a variety of topics, including carnivorous plants, Carolina bays, native orchids, medicinal plants and folk remedies, poisonous plants, edible plants, and the role of fire in natural communities.

When I searched for a wildflower guide specific to the central south, I never expected to find such a thorough and helpful book. Whether you hike the hills and actively hunt for wildflowers, or simply want to know what's growing in your backyard, Wildflowers of the Central South is an indispensable field guide. I've recommended this book to garden clubs and wildflower preservation groups all over the south.

Book Description

For two decades and counting, Texans have relied on Texas Wildflowers to identify the common and rare flowers we see along the roadsides and in the pastures, fields, and forests of our state. Compiled by naturalists Campbell and Lynn Loughmiller, with the technical assistance of Lynn Sherrod, Texas Wildflowers is an authoritative field guide with a personal touch in the many notes the Loughmillers included about the plants they described and photographed.

This new edition of Texas Wildflowers retains the charm of the Loughmillers' book while emphasizing 61 additional species and bringing the plant taxonomy and nomenclature up to date. Like its predecessor, it includes all the features you need to identify the wildflowers of Texas:

Lady Bird Johnson, author of the first edition's foreword, says of this new edition of Texas Wildflowers, "How delighted I am the University of Texas Press and the Wildflower Center are preserving Campbell and Lynn Loughmiller's legacy by revising and updating this beautiful and invaluable book about Texas wildflowers! Not only does it contain a wealth of knowledge, it also awakens our awareness of the splendor of nature and joyous lift of spirit it brings."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Wildflowers of Texas.......2007-08-01

The biggest problem with this field guide is it's organization and it is much harder to use than the color coded Wildflowers of Texas. The photographs are not as good either.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2007-04-29

This book has good coverage, small pictures next to the text, and reasonable descriptions. However it is arranged by scientific name so it will not be easy to use this to find the name of that pretty little yellow flower by the roadside. Look at "Wildflowers of Texas" by Geyata Ajilvsgi for a similar field guide but that is grouped by flower colors.

5 out of 5 stars Know Your Flowers By Name.......2007-04-10

This guide helps Texans (and visitors to Texas) to identify the common and rare flowers seen along the roadsides and in the pastures, fields, and forests of the state. Also included among the pages are 381 full-color, close up photos and 370 species including a description of its appearance, range, habitat, and blooming season.
Texas is famous for its bluebonnets, and they are a sight to see in the spring! This book shows how many more lovely flowers decorate the state. My favorite is seeing red indian paint accenting a swath of bluebonnets. Stunning.
Get this book to learn the names of all the flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Still the best, after all these years........2002-12-02

I received a copy of "Texas Wildflowers" when I was in middle school, in preparation for a class assignment to collect, identify and preserve a variety of Texas wildflowers. I have held on to my copy for the past 18 years, and it's still the best book for identifying Texas wildlflowers! The photos are superb, and the location and identifying information for each flower is informative and interesting.

My only complaint is the book isn't bound in a weatherproof binding so I can bring it along on my annual wildflower photography visits to Texas locales such as Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park; McKinney Falls State Park; Inks Lake State Park and Burnet, Texas.

4 out of 5 stars Un excelente libro de campo.......2000-10-08

    Product Description

Wildflower lovers across Georgia know Hugh and Carol Nourse through their popular slide lectures. Countless other enthusiasts have seen their glorious wildflower photographs in books and magazines. Here the Nourses draw on years of travel around the state to share their favorite places for seeing wildflowers. Of the many walks the Nourses have taken, these are the ones they return to most often because of the density or the unusual nature of the floral display. All twenty of these wildflower walks are on public land; everything you need to know about how to find them and what to do once you're there is included.

Five walks are presented from each of Georgia's four geographic regions: Cumberland Plateau/Ridge and Valley (northwestern Georgia); Blue Ridge (northeastern Georgia); Piedmont (Georgia foothills and fall line); and Coastal Plain (all of Georgia below the fall line). For each walk, a scenic photo gives a hint of the locale's overall character. In addition, five of the wildflowers encountered on the walk are profiled with a photograph and a detailed description. All of the wildflowers on these walks are native to Georgia. A few are rare and endangered.

Coverage of each walk includes directions and a trail map plus information about:

    - flowering season

    - peak flowering period

    - flower habitats

    - walk length and difficulty

    - restroom availability

    - applicable fees

Common plant names are used in the main text; the index lists both common and scientific names.

    5 out of 5 stars Wildflower identification.......2007-06-11

I purchased this book as a compation to Wildflowers of Arkansas by Carl Hunter. I especially like the way this book is arranged; by the color of the flowers. This makes speedy field identification of flowers possible. I also like the quality of the photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the flowers of the Ozarks.......2006-06-12

Found this book to be pretty good. Missing some of the flowers that I have found but handles most and the pictures and descriptions are good for someone who just wants to know what this flowers is.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT GUIDE - HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE.......2005-11-23

I have quite a number of books in my library pertaining to this subject. As an amateur photographer who specializes in flowers, I found this book invaluable for identification purposes as well as general, reliable knowledge of the subject plant being photographed. I carry this one with me in the field. The photographs are of very high quality, the book is well organized and, as far as I can tell, quite accurate in it's written descriptions. Through using this work and a couple of others, I have yet to run across a flowering plant here in Southern Missouri I was unable to identify. Recommend this one highly for those interested in the outdoors in general and flowering plants in particular. Wish we had more guides available of this quality

5 out of 5 stars An excellent wildflower guide for the Ozark region.......2000-06-24

This attractive field guide describes 355 of the most frequently encountered wildflowers in the Ozarks, with photos for each. The Ozark region, shown in a map at the beginning of the book, covers approximately half of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas, and the northeast corner of Oklahoma, plus small areas in Kansas and Illinois.

The book is organized by color, and within each color group, the flowers are listed in order of approximate bloom time. In addition to the large photos, which are attractive and excellent for identification purposes, each entry provides a description of the physical characteristics of the plant, its habitat and range, and additional comments. The additional comments often include mention of similiar species to further aid in identification, and uses of the plant - by both humans and wildlife. Scientific names are up-to-date, and any previously used names are given.

I highly recommend this wildflower guide for use in the Ozark region and nearby areas.

There is no doubt this is the most beautiful wildlfower book I have ever seen. Each of the 120 photos are full page, full color, and absolutely stunning in their clarity, composition and ability to help you identify a flower. The text is also very informative--and nicely written. Instead of technical jargon, the author gives you all kinds of information in easy to understand and often entertaining language. I'll cherish this book for a long time and use it often as he also tells you specific sites to find each flower. Again, A BEAUTIFUL BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for a Much Overlooked Part of Mexico.......2007-08-07

I'm planning a trip to Veracruz soon, so I was delighted to find this book recently. All I was able to find before were general Mexico travel guides which gave scant attention to the state of Veracruz or the Gulf Coast area. This guide gives excellent, in-depth information on this much overlooked part of Mexico.

All the cities and towns I plan to visit were listed in this guide, and good information on lodging was given. The general Mexico guides seem to recommend only the most expensive places to stay, while the Gulf Coast guide also includes budget accommodations.

There was also good information on the archaeological sites to visit, where to stay and how to get there. Best of all, there was information in this book that I hadn't been able to find on the internet, which is where I had been augmenting the meager information on Veracruz that was in my other Mexico travel guides.

In addition to the well researched and well presented written material, the book contains a nice section of color photographs, many of which were taken by the author.

This is the only guidebook I've ever seen that focuses on the Gulf Coast states of Mexico. Fortunately, it's an excellent one. If the Gulf Coast of Mexico is of interest to you, you should definitely add this book to your collection.
