Book Description

Admired by plant enthusiasts, botanists, and nature lovers of all ages, wildflowers comprise one of the most beloved—and diverse—groupings of flora in South Carolina. Although relatively small in size, the Palmetto State hosts a remarkable variety of wildflower species, from the trillium and bloodroot that brighten its forests to heliotrope and common toadflax that dot the state's roadsides and fields. With color photographs (all by Richard D. Porcher) and extensive descriptions of more than 680 species, A Guide to the Wildflowers of South Carolina offers a complete and indispensable reference for finding and appreciating these natural treasures.

Employing the same innovative approach Richard D. Porcher used in Wildflowers of the Carolina Lowcountry, he and Douglas A. Rayner simplify the task of identification by grouping species according to habitat. For each species identified, the authors include interesting facts—many not widely known or readily available—about rarity, suitability for garden cultivation, and origin of common and scientific names.

Of added interest, the botanists share itineraries for more than fifty wildflower expeditions and short essays on a variety of topics, including carnivorous plants, Carolina bays, native orchids, medicinal plants and folk remedies, poisonous plants, edible plants, and the role of fire in natural communities.

I took a class this summer and one of the Text we used was the Guide to Wildflowers of South Carolina. This book is very informative and gives many different topics for each plant listed. Later I met Dr. Porcher and he really knows his stuff.

2 out of 5 stars North Carolina Trees & Wildflowers.......2003-09-05

This pamphlet was not what I expected. The paper quality is good, and the pamphlet would be good to carry along to identify plants. However, I expected it to tell me when plants would be blooming and in what type of environment they would be found. This fold-out pamphlet has excellent pictures and name identification, but not the information I expected when I purchased it.

    Book Description

This classic botanical handbook, originally compiled by the late William S. Justice and C. Ritchie Bell, pairs color photographs with descriptions of the wild flowers and flowering trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, and weeds found in North Carolina and many other eastern states, from Delaware to Georgia. Entries include information on habitat, range, size, months of bloom, and features for identification. For this new edition, Bell and Anne H. Lindsey have included 100 additional species and expanded the information in previous entries to address developments in the field of plant conservation, providing comments on endangered and protected species, medicinal uses, the cultivation of species in a wild garden, and the commercial availability of nursery-grown natives.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, colorful guide, but hard to use .......2006-08-20

This guidebook to wild flowers in North Carolina has about 500 species illustrated, each with a description and a small photograph of the flower and plant. The guide deserves high marks for the number of species included and the scholarship which went into describing each by location, blooming date, and other information. Brief tidbits concerning medicinal uses, edibiity, and folklore of the plant are included in many descriptions. Indexed are both scientific and common names of each plant.

However, the guide is nearly worthless for the field identification of flowers. There needs to be some sort of key or pattern to help with identification. There seems no rhyme nor reason I can discern with the order in which the flowers are described. It would be a lot better if the flowers were grouped by blooming date and color, e.g. yellow flowers that appear in May should be together as should purple flowers blooming in September.

So, if you want to go into your backyard and identify what is blooming there you will need a field guide, not this book.

    Book Description

Orchids in any setting make for a beautiful sight, but native orchids growing in their natural habitats offer an especially rewarding view for plant enthusiasts, naturalists, and nature lovers of all ages. South Carolina hosts a rich potpourri of these enormously popular wildflowers, thanks in large part to its unique position as the lower boundary of more northerly species and upper boundary of species found in Florida and the gulf states. In Wild Orchids of South Carolina, James Alexander Fowler captures with spectacular photography and encyclopedic knowledge the full glory of the state's native orchid population. From the bogs and bays of the coastal plain to the mountain woodlands, Fowler catalogs rare and widely distributed species, offering a wealth of information for identifying these prized plants.

In addition to providing photographs of each species, Fowler includes common and scientific names, flower descriptions, bloom times, ranges, habitats, pollinators, and refreshingly candid personal observations about the orchids as he encountered them in the wild. He details his experiences of coming upon a show-stopping colony of large yellow lady's slipper orchids (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens) and of locating the rare monkey-face orchid (Platanthera integrilabia).

Paul Martin Brown, a nationally renowned botanist and wild-orchid specialist, provides an introduction to the volume. He explains South Carolina's significance in the larger context of North American orchid habitats and prepares the reader for the striking display of beauty and information assembled in this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a book focusing exclusively on orchids in South Carolina. .......2005-10-31

A must have compendium of SC species presented in a first-hand accounting of one man's remarkable journey with these plants. Each has a photo of a grouping in situ and closeups of floral parts, there is room for notes and extensive explanations of habitat needs, personal observations, recollections and recommendations for where you might find the plant. This is an exceptional book and I highly recommend it. I recently had an opportunity to correspond with the author and his intoxication with our wild orchids is contageous and enlightening.

Look carefully and you'll find everything from tough, cheery dandelions to dainty spider lilies, from impressive dogwoods to shy wild ginger. In North Carolina Wildflowers, you'll learn fascinating facts about even the most common plants. For example, did you know that... Early settlers used the fluffy seeds of the butterflyweed to stuff their pillows. The sensitive spiderwort can warn people about the presence of dangerous pollution. Indians made bread and pancakes from the pollen of the cattail. The May-apple root is used to make medicine that removes warts. The state flower of North Carolina isn't really a flower at all. North Carolina Wildflowers is one of a series of state wildflower guides for children. Other books in the series feature Arizona, California, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, and Texas. Through them, you'll learn to appreciate the blossoms that decorate your favorite corner of the world.

    Book Description

This authoritative guide showcases the unmatched beauty and diversity of the native orchids of the southern Appalachian mountains. Based on Stanley Bentley's many years of nature study, it covers the 52 species—including one discovered by Bentley and named after him—found in a region encompassing western Virginia and North Carolina and eastern West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The entry for each orchid provides the plant's scientific and common names, a description of the flower (including color, shape, and size), and information on the time of flowering, range, and typical habitat, all in the context of the southern mountains. A range map accompanies each description, and Bentley's own superb photographs are an additional aid to identification.

Using straightforward language yet incorporating the most up-to-date scientific information and nomenclature, the book will be welcomed by amateur naturalists or professional botanists looking for species in the field and by those who simply enjoy photographs of beautiful wildflowers.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As the Orchids.......2002-05-13

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

USA is an indispensable reference for anyone needing to acclimate and accommodate themselves to American society.

5 out of 5 stars The best of its kind.......2002-07-28

I gave Hello! USA to a friend who came here from France with her husband and a little baby. She has been in the United States before, but just to visit. She kept telling me how much she loves this book and how much it has helped her. My friend's English is not that good, but she said she understood almost everything in the book. I think this book is a wonderful gift for anyone coming here to live.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for all New Comers to the US.......2002-07-17

Even though the first edition of Hello USA was attractively presented, and very thorough, the presentation of the second edition is even crisper and the content is even more inviting to the readers. Some welcome additions are website addresses, chapter heading on each page, and references for the Author's Favorites. Suggesting for example the length that food should be kept in the refrigerator is a welcome addition for someone not used to the American kitchen and to the products available in the stores.

The technology has changed since 1996 and the book reflects these changes like the wording used for the credit cards from credit cards become more popular to credit cards can now be used.

The discussion on the intensive English programs is more generic and therefore offers more possibilities to the readers.

I would highly recommend distributing this manual to newcomers. Reading Hello USA would certainly prevent many puzzling and anxious moments to newcomers to the US.

4 out of 5 stars Moving to America? New to the States? Here's your compass........1999-04-14

I found this an easy to read and well thought out introduction to everyday life here in the States. Perfect for everyone from corporate transferees from abroad, to the international student coming to America for the very first time. This book helps you get better oriented to American life in many practical ways, and helps make new arrivals feel more at home. I certainly recommend buying the book!
