Unusable .......2007-06-03
I ordered this book in preparation for my own trip to Colorado & Wyoming because I love my Peterson's Guide for Wildflowers for the Eastern US. This was a horrible disappointment. The flowers are organized by botanical families and species, instead of the usual organization by color and appearance. The key in the back is supposed to be organized by pairs of questions, but the numbering system is confusing beyond use and whoever put it together apparently doesn't know how to indent. I hope to prevent someone else from wasting their money on this book.
A botanical travelling companion.......2007-03-18
The photography is excellent. The line drawings are even more detailed. The descriptions are very useful. The interesting facts are often fascinating. I expect to field test this guide in July when I visit Alaska and British Columbia this summer. That will be the real test.
Book Description
This comprehensive field guide includes all the flora and fauna you're most likely to see in the forest communities of the Rocky Mountains and the Southwest. It includes 53 color plates and more than 80 color photos illustrating trees, birds, mammals, wildflowers, mushrooms, reptiles and amphibians, butterflies, beetles, and other insects.

Very Helpful, Compact Guidebook - Worth the Higher Cost.......2003-08-23
Over a period of six days we hiked 41 miles on Teton trails across open stretches in Jackson Hole and through dark forests and over high mountain passes. Everywhere we saw wildflowers - not the same wildflowers, but a changing mix reflecting differences in microclimate, especially as we climbed above the tree line.
Fortunately, my wife was well-prepared and carried a copy of A Field Guide to Wildflowers of the Rocky Mountains, an excellent guidebook with full-color photos of 300 species of wildflowers scattered throughout the Rocky Mountains of North America. Only rarely did we encounter flowers that posed identification problems. (Useful hint: stopping to examine a particular wildflower is a perfect excuse for an unscheduled, but desperately needed rest break, especially at the higher elevations.)
Many guidebooks group the color photos together; the descriptive text is elsewhere and the reader is continually paging back and forth. The arrangement in Carl Schreier's field guide is especially useful for the hiker: the text and photo are on the same page making it possible to look at the wildflower, find the photo, and even read the text while continuing to move along the trail.
Ink drawings of each plant accompany the color photos to make identification easier. The relatively short overview (about 15 pages) highlights key anatomical features that help differentiate individual families and species of wildflowers. The detailed glossary of technical terms is quite helpful.
Schreier's guidebook (second edition, 2002) is widely available on the internet. Like many field guides, it is fairly expensive; used copies (1996 edition) can also be purchased.
In previous years we used guidebooks authored by Richard J. Shaw (Wildflowers of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks - ISBN 0-937512-05-2, and Plants of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks - ISBN 0-937512-02-8. They contain substantially fewer photos, but are less expensive.

Use for sightseeing, not restaurants or hotels information.......2007-10-18
Restaurants and hotels pricing was off, but, as usual, DK Publishing Eyewitness guides are like having a personal historical/architectural
guide by your side - 24/7/365. It's simply.. perfect.
Make sure to visit Budapest while in Vienna - only 3 hours away by train. Also consider Bratislava for a one-day trip - the historical center is pretty.
Great City, Great Guide.......2006-12-17
Vienna is a fascinating place to visit and this is a great book to use. For once I did not find the subdivisions as useful in this book. Vienna can be a very confusing city to get around until you get the hang of it and sometimes the street maps in the book cut off in odd places. Despite that the recommendations of things to see and do and the smaller maps were top notch. I saw almost everything this book recommends within one jam packed three day weekend. Highly recommend.
Eyewitness Travel Guide Vienna (2003).......2006-08-13
Rugged bound handbook for touring Vienna. Outside cover is plastic coated card stock, doesn't soak up water when lying on the lunch table, easily cleaned. Glossy paper throughout its 288 information packed pages: a district map on inside front cover and public transport map on the inside back cover.
"Introducing Vienna" is the first chapter devoting 60 pages to an overview Vienna from a geographical, historical and cultural perspective. Then brief descriptions of major attractions, even the brief descriptions take 20 pages because Vienna offers so much to the visitor.
Next comes "Vienna by Area" with more detailed information on attractions with highlights of St Stephans Cathedral, the Hofburg area which was the Habsburg center of power now converted to civic and cultural uses, museums, palaces etc, too much to describe here as the book devotes 120 pages to guide the reader to sites, dining and maps.
Next comes "Further Afield" with adjacent areas like the Prater recreation area with it famous Ferris Wheel "der reisenrad" and more museums. Schoenbrunn palace also in this chapter as are recommended day trips outside the city and along the Danube river. Concluding the chapter are detailed walking guides for self directed excursions.
The section "Travelers Needs" has restaurants, hotels etc plus photos of local cuisine along with the German language name including the famous Sachertorte, it makes me hungry just looking at it.
Closing the book are suggested entertainment venues, casinos, music theaters followed with practical information on exchanging money, public transportation, how to use public telephones, posting letters and cards, street maps and index.
I selected this guide because it has plenty of information on sites and cultural attractions, its sturdy binding which will outlast me on the trip and its convenient size. I have travelled may places and a good practical guide is great for me, the explorer. I like to explore and discover on my own rather than join guided tours and be shown what others believe should interest me. This book givens me so much information I should not overlook anything major unless I choose to, and that's the point, I will choose for myself what to see and do. Vienna has so much to offer, the guide helps me sort it out.
I intend to spend a full day at the KHM Art History Museum, watch an Opera at the world famous State Opera House, listen to a Mozart concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the Music Hall, attend Sunday mass with Vienna Boys Choir, see Schoenbrunn, Belvedere etc. Still time in my schedule for day trips up the Danube to Durnstein to see the Castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned and if my wife is up to it, a day trip to Budapest. Of course each day in Vienna we plan to visit pastry shops and coffee houses to get the full "flavor" of Vienna. A ride on the ferris wheel is almost mandatory.
If there is anything more in the guide I could ask for, it would be more web site listings for music attractions as many of the venue tickets can be purchased in advance to be sure of getting seats. The guide has some web sites addresses, but a self planner like me could use more.
As rich as a piece of Viennese cake.......2006-04-03
The Eyewitness DK guides are beautiful books in their own right--you would enjoy reading them even if you didn't make the trip. The text is well organized and extensively illustrated with artwork and 3-D pictures of the major tourist attractions. The directions are excellent and they direct you to the important things to see at each location.
A particularly helpful feature is a section with specific instructions on how to use Vienna's extensive public transportation system including a description of the various types of tickets and pictures of the ticket machines.
This guide blows the competition out of the water.
Excellent reference material to plan your Viennese vacation.......2005-10-21
There are two kinds of travel guides, and both are useful: those guides that help you to plan your trip, and those to carry in your shirt pocket when the shoes hit the pavement. This Eyewitness Travel Guide is one of the best, if not the best, guidebook to use for planning your Vienna trip before you go. There is a tremendous amount of material, so the book uses small fonts and thin glossy paper; still, it has quite a bit of heft and may not be convenient to carry in your shirt pocket (and if you think this is thick, you should see the China guidebook). But I read about a lot of attractions here that I couldn't find in other reputable publications, and found more details in DK.
If you want a quick guide to the sights while you are out and about the town, you may want to consider the compact DK Top Ten Guidebook. The two books have a great deal of overlap, but there's some information that was unique to the top ten guide.

Great walk around book.......2006-12-17
For getting around Vienna this is a great guide. It lets you know what the essential sights are as well as the best places to eat. If you are staying longer than two or three days you may want a more thorough guide but I would still get this one for walking around the city with.
Vienna.......2005-10-28
I am glad I purchased this guidebook for our upcoming visit to Vienna and found the information on accommodations, restaurants and sites useful. (Since we haven't visited Vienna, I can't judge the reviews' accuracy.) However, the authors' effort to stick to the "Top 10 format" sacrifices cohesion and the book is hard to follow.
An Excellent Book to Walk Around With in Vienna.......2004-09-27
I love the Top 10 travel guides because they provide a wealth of information with lots of photos and useful maps, in a very compact, portable size. They are slim volumes that can easily fit inside a small purse.
As with all the "Top 10" books, this volume provides information in the format of giving ten subsections for different subjects. For example, you have a listing of Vienna's top ten "Highlights," followed by lists of the top ten things to see at each of the top ten highlights. The Kunsthistorisches Collections, for example, is listed 3rd under "Highlights," and then, a few pages later, you have the "Top 10 Works of Art" in the Kunsthistorisches Collections listed, along with maps of the museum showing where the works are located.
This book has subjects like "Top 10 Places of Worship," "Top 10 Museums," "Top 10 Palaces and Historical Buildings," "Top 10 Parks and Gardens," "Top 10 Music Venues," "Top 10 Children's Attractions," etc. There are also, of course, top ten listings of restaurants, bars, cafes, shopping (retail stores), and the like. This book also has listings of restaurants, cafes, bars and retail shops for different sections of the city too, so that you can easily find one near your hotel.
At the back of the book is the "Streetsmart" section with its lists under headings such as "Getting to Vienna," "Getting Around Vienna," "Information and Tours," "Budget Tips in Vienna," etc. There are seven lists of Vienna hotels.
Because of its compact size, great maps (including maps of the subway, museums, palaces, and cathedrals), and the wealth of useful information on tourist sites, restaurants, shopping, etc., this is the one and only book that I carried around with me while walking through the streets of Vienna on my recent vacation.
Book Description
Every visitor to Vienna needs a good map and a good guidebook-now, for the first time, the two have been combined in a unique format at an unbeatable price. Pocket Map for Vienna.......2007-09-07
I used this guide and map on a recent trip to Vienna. It was a lifesaver for getting around the Inner Stadt but not as useful outside of the central part of the city. The subway/bus/tram information was useful when I needed to get somewhere fast! It is particularly useful because it is easy to hold in your hand while walking and looking for street names. Overall I would not leave home without it.

Top 10 Vienna.......2007-10-01
Eyewithess Travel Guides give the best complete overview of any travel book or other travel product - good organization; great pictures, maps and other graphics; interesting & concise text and descriptions about history, national foods and beverages, etc.; good suggestions for lodging and eating. They are excellet resource and reference books, but they are concise enough to give a relatively complete overview but short enough to quickly convey information, especially if you do not have a lot of free time.
Its Top 10 versions are more compact but too skeletal to give an adequate overview. The Top 10 Vienna Guide was more of a collection of lists and did not contain adequate in-depth data for my purposes. I found the regular Vienna Eyewitness Guide to be more helpful. The Top 10 Guide is great if you do not want to spend too much time. But then why bother with a book.

Excellent guide!.......2004-02-24
This is a surprisingly effective and well-organized guide, with some interesting maps and information. If you're planning on spending just a few days in Vienna, then this compact little book will be indispensible in locating the famous streets and tourist sights. The maps are more than adequate and the walking descriptions to each locale are precise and accurate. There is also corresponding material on how to use the public transportation in the city and which station to take for each particular site. There is a separate chapter on the churches of the city with a brief ranking system for the nosiest places, the friendliest, the cheapest food, etc.
If you're planning a lengthy sojourn in Vienna or if you already know the city well, then this book would not be as helpful. It is solely intended for the casual tourist and there is little, if any, information on the intriguing environs of the city. Many of the best sites are neglected because most tourists don't want to bother or simply don't have the time to stick around. Still, this is a thrifty guide you can stick in your pocket and consult when you need to find a restaurant, beer haunt or hotel. In short, if you're a first timer to Vienna, enjoy one of the greatest cities in Europe and be sure to tuck away Brook's guide,
Unwieldy, disorganized.......2002-07-13
I think one of the reasons I did not particularly care for Vienna was that I was trying to use this guidebook. It seemed to me that we were constantly crossing boundaries in the book's map of the city, which made it very confusing and not very convenient. My biggest gripe with the book however is that the index is printed in a very small and faint font, making it extremely difficult to read, for no sensible reason.
Great, but needs to be used in conjunction with another.......2001-11-11
This book is possibly one of the best guidebooks around as it takes a completly new way of presenting things. For the easily lost it provides good maps as well as detailed drawings of prominent buildings and descriptions of the internal and external architectural points and displays. The book is divided into sections, based on the districts used in Vienna. Apart from detailing the sights inside the Ringstrasse, it ventures to sights and museums in and around the city and gives detailed drawings for suggested walks. The details of the food and drinks around are also great, so now you can really tell what exactly to expect when ordering in a restaurant. The downsides I found to it are that the prices are provided in brackets, as in the Roughguide series. While this is a good way of hedging bets on price rises between updates, it's a bit hard for the person trying to travel cheaply. The section on accomodation also is limited to the more expensive ones, which means that if you're backpacking on a budget, you're best to buy a Lonely Planet guide as well (I'd suggest this anyway, they're updated more regularly and are pretty accurate for countries like Austria).
All you need to get around.......2001-07-28
I can't stress enough how valuable this book was on our family trip. The maps were detailed and easy to read. Vienna is filled with little alleys and cobblestone streets, it would've been easy to get lost, were it not for this book. Aside from the streetmaps, I referred to the subway map often.
The book also outlined a few self-guided walking tours, detailing history of landmarks and statues that you might otherwise miss if you were just walking by.
Most helpful were interior 3D maps of places like Schonbrunn, Hofsburg, and the Kunsthistoriches museum. At these venues, they often charge you for sketchy, uninformative maps in English. This book was really all we needed.
It's no wonder you see so many people with this guide, in all it's different language versions.
Eyewitness Travel.......2000-04-25
This is an excellent travel companion. Though several of the pictures/maps are cut off by the binding of the book. I recommend buying one before you travel to any country/city.
