5 out of 5 stars Really great for teaching Preschool Science........2007-10-03

One of the better "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1" series. Although I hate to recommend a book that doesn't really show you what's inside when it advertises "Search Inside."

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for elementary science teachers.......2007-04-05

This book is excellent at explaining and illustrating what is alive. It uses simple language and examples to let young children understand what things are living or non living. The information is age appropriate for elementary school children, but can be modified for younger children.

5 out of 5 stars A primary teacher's "must have" book.......2006-11-10

I am an elementary school librarian and this book addresses one of the basic questions asked by Kinders and First Graders. I bought two for the library and our primary teachers are now ordering their own. Can't lose on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-09-24

Living things eat, drink, sleep and grow - a simple explanation with examples that will appeal to most small children (e.g. cats, dogs, birds). Living things also die, and this is touched upon very briefly. I am always looking for books to assist me in homeschooling my 5 yr old son, and it's difficult to find educational books that don't bore or beat a topic into the ground. This was a satisfying choice.

5 out of 5 stars A good news tour of the American economy........2007-07-21

It is very difficult for the average person to get a handle on the American economy from the popular press. The people writing about the various issues rarely have a solid background in economics or finance, less experience in investing or managing money, and often have an unstated political bias that shades what they write.

The author of this book, Jeff Thredgold, is an unabashed enthusiast for the American economy. This book takes you through all that he sees as positive and tells you why he thinks so. Even the problems he talks about, he thinks can be managed and handled. What he wants to underscore is that far from gloom and doom, the positives about the American economy are hugely greater than its negatives.

The book is not a detailed argument about a single economic argument, but rather a tour of a number of topics. He starts with the economy in general, employment, government and deficits, entitlement programs, inflation & interest rates, the consumer, the workplace, American retirement, what he sees as guaranteed growth industries (personally, economic guarantees scare me to death), savings, investment, global issues, and some on international affairs.

All his presentations are informative for the general person, and he never gets very technical or too detailed. However, in some ways, this does shortchange some of the topics. For example, when discussing the minimum wage, he finally concludes that we can afford to give those at the bottom of our economic ladder a raise. However, he doesn't talk about other very real costs of the minimum wage to those who will not be employable at the higher wage, AND that the raise in the minimum wage is often advocated by many who themselves are paid much more than that base, but whose core pay is tied to it. However, I can see how this would be beyond the scope of this book. Still this kind of thing can distort the general reader's perspective.

So, if you want to get a broad view of the American economy that doesn't leave you looking for razor blades or some mood altering substances, or looking into emigrating to Australia, hey, this book is a good sound bit of good news.

A selection of poems, stories and essays by divinity student and self-professed wingnut Jay Joslin. Using vivid, visionary and emotionally honest images, his works not only seek to inspire readers with messages of empowerment and universal love, but to catapult them into the world of their own dreams, delicate and absurd alike. He has shared his work and philosophy of interconnectedness in various spiritual communities and many a moonlit late night rant, and now in this book, a metaphorical tour of the seasons...of the Earth and of the soul.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2007-02-08

I felt that Rick's Provence and the French Riviera guide has some of the essentials but not the inspired coverage of his other books. There isn't the excitement that he presents in his Italian and other European guides. The coverage of the hill towns of Provence is somewhat perfunctory.

I have a wonderful time using this book to plan my visit, although I would still recomend getting a few more reference document such as local map to accomondate this book.

As far as information goes, this book deserves 5 stars ... it's great for figuring out how to get around, what to see (and what not to see!), and how much money to bring. However, I couldn't give 5 stars, simply because I was hoping for better maps and maybe a few color photographs. The book has crudely drawn maps -- almost with a cartoonish look about them -- that don't seem all that helpful. And as for photos, well, the one on the cover is about it. This is a great book to have when planning your trip to Provence ... however, I would advise supporting it with a 2nd guidebook that touts glossy pages with color pictures and maps!

Steves ignores too many important cities, and I was shocked to see him refer to Beaune but not Dijon, and not even mention Nancy or Metz.

It is an userfriendly guide and he offers excellent itineraries, but the book is based on a single person's opinions and views (which explains his casual manner for excluding/including cities). Don't let this be your only guidebook in France, but it is handy to have in conjunction with others. I enjoyed the easy reading and the honest recommendations and it isn't as weighty as the Lonely Planet or bland as Fodor's. But, I am still shocked that Steves completely ignored a number of France's great and beautiful provincial cities.

                1 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover.......2006-01-30

I wish I could review this book, but the copy I received said France on the front, and the book inside was actually for Tuscany. I am still waiting for the promised replacement copy. Amazon.com was not interested in checking the other copies they had on hand for similar errors so there may be others out there that are not as they first appear!

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave for France without this book........2005-08-15

Rick Steve's writes a great travel book and doesn't mind giving you his unvarnished opinion on everything from tourist sights to where to stay. If you just take one travel book with you to France, this is the one to take!

5 out of 5 stars Not your usual travel guides.......2005-07-28

Rick Steves' regional or by-country guides are not your typical travel guides, that usually try to cover everything and anything. Instead, they describe specific, and opinionated, itineraries - what Rick thinks are the highlights of that area/country. Pictures and such are not the point. The easy to read handdrawn, not really-to-scale, maps are though. Believe me, if you follow one of his itineraries you can't go too wrong, especially if your time is limited. If you'd rather make up your own schedule and travel plans, these guides are not for you. If you would like a compact guide that has the tone of a friendly and knowledgeable travel guide talking to you, then these are for you.

                4 out of 5 stars always a good bet.......2005-07-15

This guide features the standard and reliable information that Europhile and "travel-pro" Steves is known for from his PBS series and regular film tours. Hence, while being a bit less visual than some guides, it is an affordable, generally applicable (non-Rough Guides) approach, and with a view toward local appreciation, avoiding the crowds at popular sites, and economizing (if one needs). While there will always be someone's favorite spot that will be missing in a guide, almost all needed for a first or second visit is here. One suggestion: Indexing could be improved in future editions.

This is probably an adequate enough guide for a first time visitor, or for someone who has never made it out of Weehauken, New Jersey before, and is travelling on a student, or barely post-student budget.

But beyond setting out the basic tours from Paris 101, the book is really, really skimpy on hotel and restaurant recommendations, and really, really heavy on flakking Rick Steves' products and tours.

If you buy just one guide, there are many better choices.

5 out of 5 stars Our Paris Bible.......2006-02-18

We had the great fortune to spend 3 days in Paris during the middle of May; an absolute perfect time to visit this fabulous city. This book went with us every second of our trip. We did Steves' walking tour which was 'heavenly.' This is the way to see Paris. The only problem we had was at the end of the first day my son noticed that we had spent an entire day doing what Rick does in one third of a day! We didn't care though as we never felt rushed and were able to backtrack or spend more time visiting all the wonderful shops. When we go back, this book will go with us again!

I'm glad I compared maps. The hotel I'd booked was incorrectly placed by the Stevens' map, more than 2 miles off. This made me leery about other information as well.

                5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2005-10-28

I love his books and I loved this one. It has all the right info (museum hours and transportation info). The book was invaluable because it was so helpful in a variety of different ways. I even relied on his pronunciation guides. Thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars The only guide book I took to Paris this year.......2005-10-25

Just finished a 5 night stay in Paris and Rick Steves' Paris 2005 was an indespensible guide. I used the book to read up on the main sites before going and it also has useful day planning guides. I also like the way that it doesn't waste space with loads of hotel reviews and restaurant reviews. Once you choose a hotel, which you can usually do better with TripAdvisor for more current information, that section of a guide book is then just wasted space. Anyway Rick's book was also very helpful in explaining how to catch the metro and how best to get to each tourist site. And face it, we're there to be tourists so I want to see the Eiffel tower, Notre-Dame etc, I don't want to read about some backwater art gallery if I only have four days. Rick also includes good city walks and guided tours of the main museums which saves you having to buy the audioguides at each museum. For the city walks though, I pretty soon got sick of looking at the book while walking down the street so I ended up just wandering around the neighbourhoods for awhile checking out the shops and cafe and then used the walk as a guide to find my way back out. The maps in the book are well designed and are of a convenient size for easy reference. I was able to carry the book with me everywhere and whip it out to find the nearest metro or street to the tourist site I was looking for. Overall this book made my trip very easy and enjoyable. I'm going to buy some more for my future trips to Europe.
