3 out of 5 stars Pretty neat?.......2003-03-30

This is a book with a familiar set-up: a page with two color pictures showing the flower(s) of a tropical plant, with on the opposite page a concise supporting text. It is a pity the book is not a little bigger, which would have allowed the pictures to be printed at a higher magnification. But I guess the size comes with the territory (and the price). The pictures are all of a decent quality (or better).

The author is a wellknown and top rank German botanist and the quality does shine through. However the original book was written in German, and the translation was quite lackadaisical. The Introduction contains some errors not even a novice botanist would have made: there is a caption where Tillandsia is called an Orchid and a caption that calls a flush of young Brownea leafs "leaf shedding". The bit on Plant names in the Introduction is even worse off.

Note that no synonyms are provided, which means that it may be hard to use this book alongside other works, of an earlier date. Those looking for Chorisia speciosa or Tabebuia pentaphylla will have to know to look for Ceiba speciosa and Tabebuia rosea or they won't find them.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible and informative.......2002-06-13

This is probably one of the better handbooks on tropical plants out today. It nicely blends text and images to give the beginner/amateur a solid understanding of the range of these beautiful plants and the expert a guide for tracking them down. The photos are wonderful and the writing is clear and precise. A must for plant enthusiasts.

The book is a little dry, but you'd expect that from something by the National Research Council. The information within is concise, well-organized and extremely impressive. Have you ever heard of Tarwi before? No? Well it could be the next big bean to replace soy. It just needs a little R & D.

I found this book full of very useful information of food plants from the high altitudes of the Andes. The book also has lower altitude plants used by the Incas.

4 out of 5 stars Different... in spite of it all.......2002-05-07

This is a very useful book for people with little knowledge of contemporary Spain. In keeping with the goals of the Interact Series, of which it is a volume, "Spain is Different" highlights basic cultural differences between Spain and the United States. (The title refers playfully to a much mocked tourist slogan from the 1960s.) This brief book is not a travel guide, nor does it offer much in terms of historical overview. Wattley-Ames does, however, explain in straight forward fashion basic dynamics of Spanish society that will be unfamiliar to many Americans. Her writing is clear and to the point. (After an introductory chapter that situates Spain in relationship to Europe, Latin America and the United States there follow chapters on Society and the Individual; Relationships; Language and Communication; Work; and, finally, Play.) For example, her four page summary of Spanish family relationships is, with one exception that I'll get to in a moment, right on target. Not only does she situate family life in a broad social context that will be helpful to Americans planning a visit or move to Spain, but she also points out common Spanish feelings about American families: "As for the American habit of moving to the other side of the country or the world without a backward glance, most Spaniards are both envious and dismayed." It's a perceptive and accurate observation. Now, for the exception: in the same section on the family, she has this to say about the thorny issue of child raising in an American-Spanish marriage: "The American is inevitably stricter than the Spaniard about mealtimes, snacks, treats, and naps. Spanish children typically enjoy large quantities of attention and few rules at home." This last sentence is true, but a Spanish parent, especially a mother, may find American eating habits and table manners decidedly lenient. (And as an American married to a Spaniard, well, maybe I'm the exception to Wattley-Ames' rule...) Wattley-Ames' text is judiciously sprinkled with Spanish words and expressions that serve to underscore observations. She is clearly knowledgeable of her subject matter and the book is free of significant errors, although I might quibble with some omissions. (Her discussion of regional languages and linguistic politics, for example, is a little misleading and too brief.) On the other hand, her observations on Spanish social life are particularly astute. Just as importantly, she is well aware of the dangers of generalization and stereotyping, and combats this intelligently by accompanying her observations with appropriate real life examples, proverbs, quotes from respected Spanish observers, etc. Of particular value are the chapter ending "encounters", which provide concrete examples of situations in which an American would benefit from having 'cultural literacy' regarding Spanish customs and behaviors. There is a brief bibliography that includes a valuable section on recent Spanish cinema.

                    Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens in Spain face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens to Spain? How important is Spain compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens vary from one country of origin to another in Spain? On the supply side, Spain also exports halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens. Which countries receive the most exports from Spain? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens in Spain. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens for those countries serving Spain via exports, or supplying from Spain via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Spain fits into the world market for imported and exported halogenated derivatives of acyclic hydrocarbons containing two or more different halogens. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Spain in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Spain is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Spain compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Anyone interested in the Lost Dutchman Mine or the Peralta Stone maps or any other true accounts or legends about gold in the Superstition Mountains must get this excellent book. Amy Mosier has covered it all within the pages. Her discussions show great research and extremely detailed discriptions and many photos of remote areas of these strange and formidable cliffs, valleys, trails and countless old markers, corrals, fences and indications that many people through history have made their mark in the area. If you have interest in the Superstitions and the stories of the search for gold, this book is a must for you!!

                            Description:
The goal of this work was to establish comparisons among environmental degradation in different areas from Southern Spain (Gulf of Cadiz) and Brazil (Santos and Sao Vicente estuary), by using principal component analyses (PCA) to integrate sediment toxicity (amphipods mortality) and chemical-physical data (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, Co, V, PCBs, PAHs concentrations, OC and fines contents). The results of PCA extraction of Spanish data showed that Bay of Cadiz, CA-1 did not present contamination or degradation; CA-2 exhibited contamination by PCBs, however it was not related to the amphipods mortality. Ria of Huelva was the most impacted site, showing contamination caused principally by hydrocarbons, in HV-1 and HV-2, but heavy metals were also important contaminants at HV-1, HV-2 and HV-3. Algeciras Bay was considered as not degraded in GR-3 and -4, but in GR-3' high contamination by PAHs was found. In the Brazilian area, the most degraded sediments were found in the stations situated at the inner parts of the estuary (SSV-2, SSV-3, and SSV-4), followed by SSV-6, which is close to the Submarine Sewage Outfall of Santos - SSOS. Sediments from SSV-1 and SSV-5 did not present chemical contamination, organic contamination or significant amphipod mortality. The results of this investigation showed that both countries present environmental degradation related to PAHs: in Spain, at Ria of Huelva and Gudarranque river's estuary areas; and in Brasil, in the internal portion of the Santos and Sao Vicente estuary. The same situation is found for heavy metals, since all of the identified metals are related to toxicity in the studied areas, with few exceptions (V for both Brazil and Spain, and Cd and Co for Brazilian areas). The contamination by PCBs is more serious for Santos and Sao Vicente estuary than for the investigated areas in Gulf of Cadiz, where such compound did not relate to the toxicity.

                                Description:
The organic matter of the surface horizons of soils developed below scrub vegetation in a Mediterranean semi-arid area of great environmental interest (Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, SE Spain) has been studied. The study mainly concentrates on examining the influence of two vegetation types, one evolved (according to its successional stage), and the other clearly degraded as a result of prior removal of vegetation. In spite of the homogeneity in the results obtained from the analysis of the organic matter from the soils studied, a relationship may be established between vegetation biotype and characteristics and evolution of the soil organic matter. The evolved vegetation results in the presence in the soil of a somewhat more evolved and stable organic matter (demonstrated by certain chemical and microbiological aspects), resulting in a greater degree of humification, thus favouring the protection of the soil and the ecosystem as a whole. Hence, the presence of degraded vegetation might lead to soil degradation, something that is unsustainable in semi-arid areas that are particularly fragile in nature.
