Book Description
The jolly and exciting tale of the little boy who lost his red coat and his blue trousers and his purple shoes but who was saved from the tigers to eat 169 pancakes for his supper, has been universally loved by generations of children. First written in 1899, the story has become a childhood classic and the authorized American edition with the original drawings by the author has sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
Little Black Sambo is a book that speaks the common language of all nations, and has added more to the joy of little children than perhaps any other story. They love to hear it again and again; to read it to themselves; to act it out in their play.

little black sambo.......2007-09-16
check book dimensions. I was surprised at the size. My mother read this book as a child and has always wanted a copy. I knew of the controversy but had never seen the book myself. After buying it I was eager to see what the fuss was about. I don't get! Apparently it is the pictures which were not done buy a professional(in 1899). As for the name sambo, it was turned into a slur by some bigot and probably would have happened with any name chosen. I'm sure many will be offended when I say "get over it" you brought more attention to this "offense" than it ever would have gotten otherwise. EVERYONE has had an unflattering portrayal at sometime. Let it go. I thought it was a cute story.
Review of book purchase........2007-09-10
I was very pleased with my purchase - prompt and efficient service, reasonable price. I was a little surprised that the book was "mini" size and wished that had been indicated; but I liked it nevertheless. I would definitely purchase again.
Important historically, but not delightful.......2007-04-26
To me, it is not a matter of being offended or not. But if you can read this without any discomfort you need to review your history. Of course kids can like it, but they like throwing rocks at ducks too. What is disturbing to me is how anyone can be nostalgic for a colonial past. Sambo is very lovable, but that is the point. It paid to maintain that the 'primitive' races were childlike, endearingly innocent. This idea of a paternalistic love actually supported Western dominance. They were the 'white man's burden,' permanently in childlike relation to the West, incapable of self rule or living in a modern world. In exchange for being guided to civilization, their natural resources could be had for the superior races. The childlike, innocent native is cut from the same cloth as the threatening cannibal, or the easily scared servant, or the lazy slave. All of these stories came out of that system of beliefs. This is not an Indian folk tale, however clever and tricky Sambo is. This is not, as one reviewer writes, "A loving attempt to reach across the racial divide." The historical record contradicts this reading. Read just a line or two from the official reports written by colonial administrators like Helen Bannerman's husband. This kind of nostalgia erases the history of colonial rule. Maintaining divisions between a ruling class (British) and a subaltern class (colonial subjects) was the whole point of colonialism, of which this tale is a product. You and your children may find this character cute and cuddly, but stop and think about that. So are puppies. It is quite possible to love your mammy or your servant, just as you love your dog. (The mother in this tale is a direct relation of Aunt Jemima and her pancake mix, introduced at the Chicago World's Fair just two years previously) Exactly WHO is nostalgic for this past? I understand how remembering black slaves and coolies as 'happy darkies' is a lot less painful than actually remembering the truth. This was not a simpler time but one in which brutal subordination of a people was sanctioned by the state. If you miss that 'simpler time' I hope you don't live next door to me. My children would not be safe.
Rembering the good old days.......2007-03-09
My wife and I had this book when we were children. We are now in our late 60s.And often talked about this book. Didn't know we could still buy them. This was a great little book.Think every one should read this book. keep up the good work. Thanks
Noteworthy Because of its historical context.......2007-03-05
I recall Little Black Sambo from my childhood as well. My Aunt worked as a domestic for a Jewish household and they would give her their children's discarded playthings to take to her nephews. Little Black Sambo was among the offerings. I remember reading with fascination the story of this child and I knew nothing at the time of its racist connotations. Unfortunately, despite the denial of some of the prior reviewers, it cannot be ignored that this book might be considered offensive to some. Just like the black lawn jockeys that were so popular at one time, and the Aunt Jemima pancake box before they took the bandana off of her head, these icons represent post cival rights era reality. I supppose some of you see nothing wrong with the Little Rascal character Farina with the rags tied in his head, or Buckweat either. I would not advocate banning any of the aforementioned symbols, because I think they should be cherished as a sign of just how far we've come. I have mammy salt and pepper shakers, cookie jars, etc., because as a Black man in America, I want to remember and cherish the past. If I find the version of this book I had as child in which Sambo was jet black with white eyes and huge red lips, I'd add it to my collection in a heartbeat!

Book Description
Respect for animals has always been a part of human consciousness. Poets, thinkers, philosophers, scientists and statesmen have long celebrated our compassion towards Earth's other beasts.
Awe for the Tiger, Love for the Lamb compiles the most significant statements of sensibility to animals in the history of thought. From the myths of the ancient world to the Middle Ages to Darwin and beyond, Preece captures the most telling and fascinating accounts of humankind's relationship to the wild world, placing them in historical context.
Jung called it "an unconscious identity with animals," while Wordsworth saw it as the "primal sympathy which having been must ever be." Linking the diverse chords of human experience that are touched by the animal world, Preece shows that despite a historical thread of cruelty, there still remains in all humanity a constant underlying concern for other beings as an integral part of the moral community.
With musings and meditations from Lao Tse to Mohammed, from Plato to Jane Goodall, from classical religion to parliamentary proceedings, Awe for the Tiger, Love for the Lamb is an original, superbly researched history that deepens our understanding of all living beings.

Enchanting legend!.......2002-02-03
Great for reading with Chinese studnets. The goddess Qin tries to steal a beautiful brocade but has difficulty when a little boy decides to fight for it. Nice little chinese story with Chinese style illustrations.
Book Description
This insightful examination of the history and extinction of one of Australia's most enduring folkloric beasts--the thylacine, (or Tasmanian tiger)-- challenges conventional theories. It argues that rural politicians, ineffective political action by scientists, and a deeper intellectual prejudice about the inferiority of marsupials actually resulted in the extinction of this once proud species. Hb ISBN (2000):0-521-78219-8
Customer Reviews:
a book that does what the title says.......2002-05-15
i write this recommendation to emphasise to potential readers that this is a very worthy study of the extinction of the Thylacine. whilst true that this book will not inspire hope that this most unique of creatures survives, it does unravel the reasoning behind it's rapid fall into extinction. Paddle offers a gentle introduction to the species' biology and ecology, aswell as a history in captivity, but it is his research of bounty records and contemperary accounts that sets this work above others. scientific maybe, but well planned, researched and written, and the twist he brings in regarding the reason for the bounty is worthy of an agatha christie novel! an excellent piece of work and well suited to conservation biologists, natural historians and anyone with an interest in the twentieth century's greatest loss.
Controversial Theories Versus Accepted Logic.......2001-03-19
Robert Paddle's controversial book, The Last Tasmanian Tiger, attempts to overturn most previously accepted anecdotal reasoning on a subject that is fast becoming popular world wide. Paddle has rather recklessly thrown caution to the wind in his sometimes dangerous dismantilling of sound anecdotal evidence, replacing it with his own logic, which is in many cases sadly wide of the mark. The Last Tasmanian Tiger could prove to be a dangerous book in the wrong hands, for it could lead astray those tender souls genuinely seeking information of this unique creature. Being pro-scientific as it is, Paddle's book is written in a style that can be hard to decipher for us mere mortals. But, all this aside, Paddle has done a tremendous ammount of research in assembling his book, some of it ground breaking, and from this point alone it makes worthwhile reading. The Last Tasmanian Tiger is definitely not suitable for the novice thylacine enthusiast.
Book Description
This is a book dealing with the big questions about development:
· What is development?
· Can Third World countries ever hope to 'catch up'?
· Can a development path be found that avoids indefinite impoverishment on the one hand, and environmental destruction on the other?
· What is the relationship, if any, between economic growth and political development?
· Can a country that has failed hitherto create for itself a second chance?
In their wide-ranging and insightful exploration, the authors take as their main examples two contrasting countries: Ghana, the first African colony to win independence, but which plunged into a downward spiral of economic decay; and Thailand, which was poorer than West Africa in the 1950s, but which went on to achieve decades of extraordinarily rapid economic growth, albeit at considerable environmental and human cost.
Intensely readable, this thought-provoking and courageous book brings the big questions about development to a wide audience of college students and interested readers.
Customer Reviews:
A thoughtful narrative of modern development.......2005-01-31
I was unfamiliar with the trends in African and Southeast Asian development before reading this book ... the title and subject seemed interesting. However, during the course of my reading it, I have grown significantly more knowledgable about how "3rd world" nations are on their own tracts to develop and enter the ranks of "modern societies".
He begins with a short history of both African and Asain developments, the key players, and background that sets each region up before they take charge of their own destinies. From there, he investigates the cultural, economic, environmental, and international pressures that disseminate one economy from another, as well as invesitgating the ultimate consequences of this growth.
This book is well-written, interesting evenfor a non political science or economics major, and thought-provoking to the core. I highly recommend this book to any who would be interested in learning more about modern development in differing regions of the world.
A must buy book for everyone.......2001-11-08
I am from Thailand and a native Thai.
I read his book; he is my professor.
I am impressed with his idea- the so " socratic idea".
I love his book and everyone should buy it.
Customer Reviews:
Worthy.......2000-07-14
This book is a very interesting and educational read for any current or prospective cat owner. It offers some unique insights, for instance seeing the use or non-use of a scratching post in view of the cat's territorial instincts.
It is in no way comprehensive, and should be read as a back-up to a more complete guide. As an example, the important issue of de-clawing is not covered at all in this book.
For those who do not feel a compulsion to finish a book all the way to the end (I am such a compulsive person, alas), I would suggest the reader skip chapter 10. It has little to do with house cats, being mostly a "call to action" regarding the state of the tiger worldwide, and a call to use "environmental" products. While there is nothing wrong with the desires to protect the tiger and the planet, I think this is a little out of place in a book that is supposed to be mostly about the care of house cats.
Another weak point is the constant nagging about spaying/neutering. Personally, I will definitely spay/neuter my cat, and I have done so with all my previous cats. I think the vast majority of owners should, since there is unquestionably a cat overpopulation problem, and because it makes for a better pet. But to suggest that only professionals should breed only purebreed cats is excessive. Anyone with a sincere concern for the health and long-term wellbeing of both mother and kittens ought to feel free to breed a cat- provided they take full responsibility for professional health care and for the quality placement of any kittens. Those of us who prefer "alley" cats, and who don't want to pay hundereds of dollars for a kitten have reason to be grateful to loving and responsible breeders of all stripes.
The best book about cats I've ever read........1999-05-30
The authors and others in their family have studied big cats all over the world, and they also observed the behavior of housecats and barn cats on a farm in this country. Many of the stories they tell are fascinating and funny, and some are remarkably moving.
FANTASTIC, except for one sentence.......1999-05-29
I've read dozens of cat care and feline behavior books. While this one is by no means comprehensive (it never claims to be), I still learned A LOT from it. The writing is fun, interesting, and informative. It helps the reader look at domestic cats' behavior from their wild ancestors' perspective. I also like that the book was a husband-wife collaboration. I would've given this 5 stars except for one single sentence in which the authors recommend spaying domestic female cats after their first heat cycle. This theory of the best time to spay was "correct" at the time the book was written. However, more recent studies show that allowing a female cat to experience even one heat cycle greatly increases her risk of developing all sorts of health problem. When an errata sheet correcting that one lone incorrect sentence is included with this book, I will give it my highest review. It's a fun book that will teach you a lot.
A wonderful book for any cat owner!.......1999-04-20
This book provided me with many insights to the behavior of my cat. Being a first-time cat owner, I had no idea why my cat acted the way he did. After reading this book, I have come to understand and appreciate Sly, my cat, for his in-born character traits, and to understand all cats in general better! The pictures and stories of the big cats are entertaining in and of themselves, as well, whether you own your own cat or not! This is really a worthwhile book!

Inspirational.......2004-04-10
This is, in my opinion a book that should be compulsory reading for anyone who has ever complained, moaned or whinged about anything (which, lets face it is all of us). I found this book to be incredibly inspiring, the challenges and hardships faced by this brave woman and her family are examined and exposed in an almost voyeuristic way, leaving us with a true sense of what it is to get the most out of life and to be thankful for what we have got. It is written articulately and honestly and is a book i intend to read again and again to remind me of just how lucky i am.
