A wonderful resource.......2007-06-20
I have an older edition of this book, just found this 2001 edition (new) at a book sale at Barnes & Noble for only $20.00! As a Docent at a local wildlife facility, this is an excellent resource book, as well as good reading material. Super illustrations, with easy-to-understand text makes this a "must-have" for anyone interested in the Mammal world.
An excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science.......2006-12-14
Both high school and public library reference holdings strong in animal science will find the second updated edition of the three-volume set The Encyclopedia of Mammals to be an excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science. A team of editors have produced volumes which lend to both serious study and leisure browsing with a blend of color photos and drawings and articles newly revised to reflect the latest research and trends. From maps demonstrating species distribution patterns to articles that survey conservation issues and mammal natural history, the set seeks to clarify scientific terms and perspectives and will prove a delightful resource for any student of natural history.

Fantastic Book - Hard To Find Under $100.......2005-03-21
"The Encyclopedia Of Mammals" is a wonderful book. BN offered a one-volume edition with over 930 pages until sometime in 2003 for under $50. The book covers all the mammals in the world in full color with comprehensive text and weighs about 12 lbs. The current offering is a 3-volume edition by Facts On File Natural Science Library at about $300.

Disgusting.......2007-08-22
Capitalizing on the brutality, violence, and abuse of the dog fighting world for financial gain is ghastly. Selling this material supports and perpetuates this horrible industry and sends the wrong message about our society. Until Amazon stops distributing this and other dog and cockfighting materials, I cannot in good conscience give them my business, and I will urge friends and family to do the same.
This is a crime. Don't waste your money.......2007-08-14
Why would anyone be interested in seeing dogs kill each other. I am surprised that Amazon has stooped this low. No more soup for you Amazon!
This is available is School and Library binding??.......2007-07-30
I pray this (or any other book on this topic) finds it's way to any bookshelf and especially a school! Disgusting!
Great history book.......2006-07-27
I don't understand why people are so upset about this book. It is a history of the sport of fighting dogs and the breeds used to do it. I don't think it's right, but nothing will change the past. I don't hear people screaming that the Holy Bible shouldn't be sold because it's illegal to crucify people now... If you are simply looking into the history of some dog breeds, then this is a good place to start. Carl doesn't gloss over anything, the horror of a beautiful animal being used for such a purpose, or their loyalty and intelligence. Pit bulls are one of the most wonderful dogs out there, and it is a shame that they were bred purely for fighting, but that isn't their limits or what you have to use them for. I support Amazon for not being a close-minded, book burning company. The truth shall set you free.
Okay Book.......2005-09-05
This book is certainly an original, scribed in the authors own words.
The author is definitely a fighting dog breed enthusiast; however, he states at the beginning of the book he does not promote dog fighting. I find it interesting how previous reviewers are shocked to find references to dog fighting in a book entitled "The World of Fighting Dogs".
The book covers many of the famous dog fighting breeds, but not the more obscure breeds and most of the pictures are black and white. This would not be my first choice for a book on the History of Fighting Dogs Breeds or the History of Dog Fighting, but there are so few contemporary books on the subject that it is worth picking up when you have the extra cash. Book Description
Long ago, a lone little burro roamed the high cliffs of the Grand Canyon and touched the hearts of all who knew him: a grizzled old miner, a big-game hunter, even President Teddy Roosevelt. Named Brighty by the prospector who befriended him, he remained a free spirit at heart. But when a ruthless claim-jumper murdered the prospector, loyal Brighty risked everything to bring the killer to justice.
Brighty's adventures have delighted generations of readers, and he has become the symbol of a joyous way of life. Some people say that you can even see his spirit roving the canyon on moonlit nights-forever wild, forever free.

Brighty -- Still a great read!.......2007-08-09
At age 54 I decided to add this book to my classic children's collection. I was delighted to find when I read it again after 43 years, it still was a charming, fun book from beginning to end!
Brighty Review.......2007-01-06
I ordered this book for my wife as we had just returned from the Grand Canyon and she had expressed interest in Brighty...she even bought a small stuffed Brighty. Anyway, the format of the book is really cute as it reminded me of books I read in grammer school. As I understand, the story is based on some level of fact. I have seen references to Brighty in the Grand Canyon Association news and in the Death in Grand Canyon book. It is a fun read and provides a little history of the Grand Canyon. Anyone with an interest in animals, the outdoors or the Grand Canyou will enjoy this book.
Another memory........2006-11-03
Another great book for children. It has been around a long time and was a favorite of our children. I purchased it for our grandchildren.
enjoyed the book.......2006-06-18
I just discovered this delightful book. I find it ironic to read comments about burros being destructive......perhaps we humans ought to look in the mirror. We have been far more destructive to this national treasure than any burro.
His Free Spirit Haunts the Canyon.......2005-04-19
Set in the Grand Canyon during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency this charming tale introduces readers to an unlikely animal protagonist: a wild burro who lives alone, but has been partially tamed by kind men. Rescued first by the Old Timer, then from a cougar's wounds by the North Rim's resident lion-killer, Brighty experiences the gamut of human behavior toward animals and each other: from the absurd, the selfish, the ambitious, and even the criminal. As the only witness to the evil schemes of a thieving murderer, Brighty relies on his own natural instincts which warn him about vicious Jake Irons.
Ruthless Irons murders the kindly and trusting prospector in order to obtain his copper mine. The sheriff frets for several years that the heinous crime goes unsolved and that the murderer remains unpunished. But Uncle Jimmy Owens' moon-lily tea helps trick a confession from the cruel scoundrel-with Brighty as a non-verbal but wary witness. Even in his lonely pilgrimages down to Bright Angel Creek the burro has many adventures on his own; he even crosses the Colorado River twice on a bridge which he helped men construct. Will he one day prefer to live
with his own kind as king of the herd? Or Be satisfied to be honored and befriended by human beings? Teddy Roosevelt looms larger than life as his personality is interwoven with Marguerite Henry's fictitious characters. For it was this charismatic president who devoted his efforts to setting aside the wilds of the Grand Canyon in the form of a national park.
Readers rejoice at Brighty's free spirit, which is said to prance through the gorges and trails which he cut en route to his beloved North Rim. This gentle burro epitomizes the youth and vigor of the primeval canyon-showing how humans and animals should cooperate to preserve America's natural wilderness. Delightfully illustrated by Wesley Dennis, this book is for outdoors enthusiasts and animal lovers of all ages.
Book Description
Snakes are among the most beautiful and fascinating creatures of all the vertebrates. It is no wonder there are more than fifty species of snakes regularly bred in captivity and more than one hundred species available in pet stores. But how does the keeping of snakes become art? By developing a naturalistic vivarium system that puts a snake's welfare and quality of life above all. This will enhance your enjoyment in observing these fascinating creatures.
Customer Reviews:
A true "must have" for many keepers.......2005-05-17
This book is different in it's approach than any other care book I've seen. The author argues for, and shows how to do, quasi-natural to naturalist setups for many common serpents.
The difference is that most books do not touch natural vivaria for snakes. There has been some recognition of thier benefits with lizards and amphibians, but little to no discussion of thier role in snake husbandry.
The book covers the basics of setting up different types of vivaria--i.e. desert and tropic, etc. and list some plants, and substrate mixes that are suitable. He then goes into some particular snakes he feels are well suited for this sort of display. This means the books focuses on small through midsized, diurnal snakes, as they are the best display animals in a natural set up. This excludes many common species, but includes many species equally suited to a beginner--some of which are actually more suited than many more popular species, and hey, it opens up new ideas.
These setups, in my experince (I've been doing them for several years) make keeping snakes much more rewarding. I've tried the LAM method (sterile boxes, wood shavings, and a heat source) and it's not that much fun. It has it's place, but it should emphatically not be the approach employed by the average hobbyist. Allowing snakes a fairly large cage, with structures and possibly plants, appropriate to it's size and behavior, greatly enhances thier captive behavior. A boa constrictor can just sit in a 4X2X1 foot cage all day, with little to do, and live. Or, you can put it in a 4X2X3 cage with thick branches, places to explore, ect. and have a much more interesting captive.
SOme of the book is common sense, some of it is fairly detailed, but for a novice keeper, it is a must have--and frankly, it's a good idea for many more advanced keepers.
The approach advocated does have limits; truly large snakes (big boas, burmese, etc.) are not suited for planted tanks, because they crush anything smaller than a tree. Furthermore, I wish the book dealt with quasi-natural setups more--they're my preferred approach, and more flexible. You simply use wood shavings, or a burrowable mix of sand and soil, and structure large branches and rocks in the cage. No plants, true, so not as pretty, but provides much of the same stimulus and is easier by far. I also wish he dealt more with noctural displays; he mentions some ideas (i.e. use redlights) but he doesn't deal with ways to make truly amazing noctural displays--e.g. plants that flower at night, etc.
But still, this book gives you info you will not get in any other avialable book for snakes. It also advocates an approach that makes keeping snakes truly much more pleasent. I heartily reccomend it for anyone, particularly new people, or people who use the LAM method and are burning out. It opens new ideas, better ideas.
Read this first.......2005-03-17
Before getting into keeping a snake I wanted to know exactly what I was going to let myself in for. This book not only gave me that information, but more. It shows how you can create a territory for the snake that is enjoyable and healthy for the animal, ecological, pleasant to look at and requires relatively low maintenance. I ended up dividing the purchasing process into 3 phases: Creating a pleasant vivarium, where the buying of plants and composition were at least as much fun as the anticipation of getting a snake. Then the purchasing of quarantine equipment and finally the snake and food. This book helped me all the way through. I highly recommend it and read it before you purchase any snake.
At Last!!.......2004-09-12
Keeping snakes in plastic blanket boxes has its place in the warehouses of professional breeders but for the average keeper, we wonder why, after starting with a pair of snakes, we somehow become disillusioned and unsatisfied with them and move onto a different 'more advanced' species. Suddenly we find ourselves with corn snakes, kingsnakes, boas, green tree pythons and wonder, amid all the blanket boxes, why we ever started. The daily cleaning and feeding chores are only offset by the fact that we made a little money on the side by selling offspring.
If you are thinking about owning a snake or are already drawn in the direction of purchasing more and more species - I would recommend this book above all others.

Not Worth It.......2007-05-13
A fairly useless guide, with many facts but no feeling. Everyone knows their own expectations of Jamaica. This book does not address this at all.
Don't bother if you already have the 2nd edition.......2004-09-23
I very much liked the 2nd edition of this text. I purchased the 3rd edition because we are planning our third trip to Jamaica. Unfortunately, this new edition contains very little updated information. In fact, two of the newer Riu hotels in Negril (one of which opened in 2001) are not even included in this guide.
This is a very helpful guidebook, but don't bother buying the new edition if you already have the 2nd edition. You can find as much useful information online.
The ultimate honeymoon guide........2003-08-15
I recently got married and this guide was all I needed to find the best of Jamaica. With its section on the Best of Jamaica, I was given the top choices for everything from the best beaches, honeymoon resorts, romantic getaways, shopping buys, and gold courses. This guide made planning my trip simple, with all the information I needed to know before I got there, like the exchange rate, the calendar of events, and tips on dining out and shopping.

Frommers offers in-depth coverage of all the beaches, plus golf, river-rafting, and more. Customer Reviews:
Outstanding guide........1998-11-01
"Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados" is an outstanding guide to the finest (and most affortable) shops, sites, hotels, and restaurants on the two islands. Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince also give us candid, in-depth "Best Of's" at the beginning of the book. If, for instance, you're an avid tennis player, the Best Tennis Facility in Barbados is at the Sandy Lane Hotel. And one of the Best Honeymoon Resorts is, ironically, Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Other fine sections include: "Fast Facts: Jamaica/Barbados," "Calendar of Events," and "Planning a Trip to Jamaica/Barbados." The authors do a first-rate job of giving you the low-down on Jamaica without scarring you off ("There's no denying that it's plagued by crime and drugs...But many visitors are unaffected; they are escourted from the airport to their hotel grounds and venture out only on...organized tours"). If you're planning a trip to either of these two lovely islands, don't plan it without the aid of this top-notch guidebook.
Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados (2nd ed.) was user friendly........1997-11-20
The 2nd edition of this travel guide was useful, informative and well read when we travelled to Jamaica in 1994. We are planning on going back and will be purchasing Frommer's Guide to Jamaica and Barbados (3rd ed.). The guide was well segmented and easy to use. Reviews were right on and the extremely accurate price guides helped us plan for everything.
The historical information made for interesting reading and the people and local culture were exactly as described! This is a well done and very user-friendly travel guide. It's also a bargain at Amazon.com!
