Book Description
These extraordinary photographs by two brothers, Anup and Manoj Shah, take the reader on a spectacular journey into the heart of the African savannah, concentrating on the Serengeti-Maasai Mara and Ngorongoro Crater regions in Kenya and Tanzania. The Shah brothers' breathtaking images chronicle life and death in one of the most fascinating and complex eco-systems in the world, a place left largely untouched by man. Here lions, giraffes, elephants, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, baboons, wildebeests, and thousands of other species give birth, play, hunt, feed, groom, sleep, mate, migrate, and die in the dramatic scenes played out on these pages.
Anup Shah's text complements the images, starting with the most basic elements necessary for life on the savannah and gradually building up to the intricate, dynamic interactions between the plants and animals in the food chain and their environment. Every aspect of daily life is touched on: evolution and natural selection, sex and mating rituals, birth and motherhood, staying alive and getting along, predators and prey, herds and social groups. In the final chapters the reader discovers that in death all living things return to the soil, where it all began, thus completing the circle of life.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing photos of African wildlife: 5+ stars.......2006-11-22
These are simply amazing wildlife photos, all from East Africa, where the Shah brothers live. This large-format book is beautifully printed, and these photos are about as good as wildlife photography gets. Lots of everyone's favorite (mine anyway), baby animal photos! Now, almost anyone (even me) can take a cute photo of baby cheetahs in their furpunk soft-Mohawk glory. But the Shahs can photograph a baby *hippo* and make it look cuddly (p. 146)....
The Shahs have the unfair advantage of living in Kenya, so their photos represent literally years of fieldwork in their own backyard (big backyard!). Which wouldn't matter except that they may well be the finest photographers of East African wildlife so far. Astonishing work, absolutely not to be missed. I know, I'm stuck in superlative mode here, but these guys are really, really good, and Harry Abrams has done them up proud.
You've almost certainly seen some of the Shah's photographs, likely in National Geographic -- though if you're as oblivious as me, you may not have noticed their names. I've uploaded a couple of images to jog your memory. Most highly recommended for anyone who's interested in African wildlife. And yes, you should save up for a trip to East Africa someday....
Happy viewing--

Beautiful & Massive Documentation of Life on the Savannah........2004-07-09
Anup and Manoj Shah have distinguished themselves in the populous field of wildlife photography by producing expressive and beautiful portraits of wild animals that document the individuals' lives while achieving impressive aesthetic grace. Many of the brothers' photographs are simply unforgettable works of art that I never tire of looking at. "The Circle of Life" is a massive book that contains 235 photographs of wildlife on the African Savannah. About 40 species of mammal are represented, as well as some birds and reptiles. In the most comprehensive photographic essay of wildlife that I have ever seen, the Shah brothers document the lives of the many animals who live and die in this vast African ecosystem that spans much of Kenya and Tanzania. The authors have organized this photographic odyssey by dividing the book into 20 chapters, each showcasing one aspect of life on the Savannah. The early chapters show us the basic elements that create and sustain life. Some example chapters are: "Driven by Wet and Dry", "Light and Energy", and "Shaped by Fire and Elephants". The book then moves on to the subjects of birth and growing up on the Savannah. "Natural Selection", "Adaptation and Diversity", "Peaceful Coexistence", and "Mother and Offspring", for example. Then we see the lives of adult animals. Some examples are: "Herds and Social Groups", "Grazers and Browsers", and "The Hunters". And finally these animals die, returning to the earth, and the "circle of life" begins again: "Scavengers and Decomposers", "Land and Life". Each chapter begins with an essay written by Anup Shah that explains what that particular facet of life on the Savannah entails and how it fits into the greater life cycle.
The photographs in "The Circle of Life" are mostly one-to-a-page, but there are also 2-page spreads and pages containing two photographs. The reproduction quality is good. All photographs have detailed captions. An index in the back of the book allows the reader to locate text and photographs by species or topic. The index is most helpful considering the size of this volume. If you're familiar with the work of Anup and Manoj Shah through "Nature's Best" magazine, most, but not all, of their "Nature's Best" photographs are included in this book. "The Circle of Life" is a record of wildlife on the African Savannah that is impressive in its size, scope, and beauty. Only photographers who spend an extraordinary amount of time in this environment could have captured so much of the lives of so many species. It's a pleasure to see the results of Anup and Manoj Shah's experience and persistence in one volume. "The Circle of Life" is a fantastic coffee table book for nature photography fans, as well as a great visual resource for anyone studying this ecosystem.
Book Description
With his phenomenal photographs of the five great predators of the African bushÂlions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and crocodilesÂMark Ross takes the reader on a wild safari. He shares his unparalleled knowledge and in-depth insight into the morphology, behaviors, daily activities, and livelihoods of the large carnivores that prowl the plains, woodlands, and rivers of Africa.
Along with a removable, fold-out guide containing a predator Âcheat sheet of various traits and statistics as well as tips on how to best observe and photograph the animals, Predator overflows with information that both enlightens the reader and dispels popular misconceptions. Compelling and sometimes violent, RossÂ's text and images capture the true life-and-death scenarios that are played out every day against the backdrop of the magnificent African landscape.
Book Description
The tawny lion slinks through golden grass, stealthy and sinuous, utterly concentrated on the hunt, a perfect predator awaiting only the instant when pure instinct triggers the rush, the spring, the ferocious slash of sharp claws and merciless fangs that will bring down her prey. It's a scene as old as Africa itself, yet its sudden, violent drama is always new.
Dereck and Beverly Joubert know it well. For decades they've lived among lions, winning international acclaim for their unique photographs and pioneering documentaries, which record lions' previously unknown behavior such as nocturnal forays and a willingness to stalk their quarry through water. Of all their long experience, the Jouberts consider their two years with the lions of Duba the most exciting, important research they have donehere presented in fascinating text and 100 gripping images.
Month after month, they battled floods, hardship, and danger to capture these spectacular shots of the relentless blood rivalry played out on the Okavanga Delta every day as three separate lion prides harry a huge herd of buffalo. These massive beasts are challenging prey; they fight back fiercely, aggressively seeking out the big cats and attacking them with deadly thrusts of their sharp, sweeping horns. The lions leap and dodge, but not always swiftly enough to escapeand so the ancient struggle goes on.
The companion volume to a new National Geographic film airing in 2006, this is an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of the world's most awe-inspiring hunters, the lethal and beautiful lions of Duba.

A top pick any public library strong in visual natural history displays must have........2007-02-08
The gorgeous photos and elongated size of Relentless Enemies: Lions and Buffalo lends particularly well to public library display - as does the way natural history which surveys the back-and-forth interplay between lions and buffalo. The focus here is the Duba area of Botswana's Okavango Delta, with the ecology of lion and buffalo the object of a striking blend of full-page color photos and naturalist observations. A top pick any public library strong in visual natural history displays must have.

Relentless Enemies.......2007-01-15
Superior photographs are consistent throughout this book. The accompanying prose is well done and provides additional information about the subjects seen through the camera's eye. This book is definitely for anyone who has an interest in lions, buffalo or the African wildlife. This book is the still rendition of the movie which is soon to be available on DVD. The movie has played many times on the National Geographic Channel over the past couple years. The information contained in the book does not lose relevance through time. The Jouberts have again provided a masterpiece.
Disappointed.......2006-12-15
I admire grate work done by Beverly and Dereck Joubert with all they movies and books (I own many of them). I even went do Savute to see places they described in previous books.
Needles to say I decided to buy this book blindly as I expected (as always) the highest quality. What was my disappointment when I discovered that this book is poorly printed and almost all photographs look gray. Even photos make in sepia look somewhat artificial. On the top of this cover picture (and many inside) is extremely out of focus. I find it hard to believe that Beverly Joubert would select such images to be printed. Those shortcomings took away all joy I expected to have reading this book.

Elephant Memories: Thirteen Years in the Life of an Elephant Family
ASIN: 0810919842 |

Elephants, writes German wildlife photographer Reinhard Künkel, are strange creatures. "Despite their size," he writes, "elephants by no means claim undisputed precedence in all their dealings with other animals. The privileges they might derive from their awesomeness and strength they are often too gentle and peaceable to claim." Yet an elephant that makes room for an annoyingly chiding pair of crested cranes one minute will defend its territory against a curious human the next, and, as Künkel relates, some of the images in this fine suite of photographs were the result of hair-raising negotiations with elephants on their native turf. Few wildlife photographers have worked in such close proximity with their subjects, as he notes in some of the wry autobiographical vignettes that open his book, and Künkel's 120-plus color plates capture elephants in all aspects of their daily lives: eating, bathing, traveling, playing, fighting, and, well, making other elephants. Künkel has spent many years among elephants throughout East Africa, and his familiarity with their ways affords his readers an exceptionally fine experience in armchair nature travel. --Gregory McNamee

One of the finest wildlife photo books.......2000-08-24
Up to now I've been to East Africa 3 times. I still regret not having bought Kunkel's book "Ngorongoro" the first time I saw it. I've got quite a few photography and painting books on Afircan wildlife but still regard Kunkel's pictures to be the most stunning. He has crossed far over merely documenting wildlife and his immense artistic talents are fully shown in the pictures. Fortunately, unlike "Ngorongoro" (now out of print), the publisher of "African Elephant" has decided to reprint this title. Highly recommended. A must for all interested in African wildlife and/or wildlife photography.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Pictures but ultimately not worth it.......2001-02-10
I happened to pass by this book at my local library, and I ended up reading all 150 unremarkable pages. This book is essentially a compilation of Bach's journal entries and Krasemann's photographs, and a lot of times, to the book's detriment, they have nothing to do with each other. The photographs are certainly nice, but the journal entries are useless. Bach's journal is basically 150 pages of bland animal descriptions. There is little else. We barely learn anything about the circumstances of her trip, the people she interacts with, or anything else about her experience. Instead the average sentence is something like, "Today we saw the lion, the great king of the jungle." Anybody could have written this. There is nothing unique about her experience, at least from what she shows us. I got through the first 90 pages of the book in forty five minutes, and only decided to finish it because it went by so fast and had decent pictures. But I recommend that you don't waste your time, if you have better resources available.
Just like if you were there, excellent !.......1999-01-28
Astonishing pictures, incredible text putting in words the incredible feelings associated with an African Safari in the Serengeti. Just came back from there and this book really gave me multiple flash backs.

Book Description
Every year, spurred on by the dry season on the African plains in Kenya and Tanzania, close to two million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles make the epic journey from their breeding grounds in the southern Serengeti to greener, wetter grass on the northern plains during what is known as the Great Migration.
As the dry season turns to wet, they travel full circle back south. Year after year, governed by the seasons as they evolve from wet to dry and back again, this cycle repeats itself. Great travelers that they are, these migrants encounter dangerous predators and the kaleidoscope of wildlife on the African savannah along the way, from lions and leopards to elephants, dik-diks, and dung beetles.
African Odyssey: 365 Days follows the movements of these massive herds as they migrate across the Serengeti, with each spread representing a day in the life of the herds. Dramatic scenes are played out on every page, chronicling life and death in one of the most fascinating and complex ecosystems in the world. With its extraordinary photographs and text, African Odyssey takes you on an unforgettable journey.

Customer Reviews:
Not of great value.......2007-10-07
I did not find this book of much use during my trip. It did not go deep enough into the attributes of the cities I wanted to visit. I took it with me but did not use it.
This guide for party and pleasure seekers only.......2005-09-28
I was disappointed with this book. It was more interested in where to drink and where to find the gay/lesbian scene in Germany than many of the unique historical sites of the country. If you are looking for a guidebook that helps you find cultural / historical treasures in Germany, this is not the book.
gREAT.......2005-08-18
For a person traveling to Germany for the first time it is a great introduction on what to expect. Great hints for other types of travel to other countries.
But it gives key places to visit, good itineraries and excellent hints.
Not for an experienced traveler.
You don't have to be a dummy to buy this book........2003-08-21
Everything you ever wanted to know about planning a trip to Germany was offered in this easy-to follow, straightforward guide. With tear-out maps, checklists, and top ten lists, this book is all you'll need for your trip. It also covered all the essentials, including hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and attractions in all regions of Germany.
Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing in Germany face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing to Germany? How important is Germany compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing vary from one country of origin to another in Germany? On the supply side, Germany also exports tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing. Which countries receive the most exports from Germany? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing in Germany. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing for those countries serving Germany via exports, or supplying from Germany via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Germany fits into the world market for imported and exported tailors dummies, lay figures, automatons, and animated displays used for shop window dressing. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Germany in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Germany is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Germany compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
