Colorful, with a Unique Setting for Children.......2002-06-30
The BIG Fish is a story of hopes and dreams of a young girl, but the setting for the story is what intrigued me and my grandson the most. He had not read of children of the Frozen North, so this was a new experience for him. Indeed, this is the story of a dream come true, and believing in oneself, but at the same time, exposes children to the idea of a small child living in an Eskimo Village - all children in this world have dreams. The illustrations are beautifully done, with gorgeous colours throughout. Very clever and unusual in it's setting.
The Big Fish.......2001-03-24
What a nice bedtime book for my 4 year old! It's beautiful - the illustrations are rich and the artist has a true sense of humor. The story is a tale about a young Native girl wishing to catch a king salmon. The story is a true confidence builder for any child. It's my 4-year old son's favorite bedtime story. I have bought several other books offered by Misty Mountain Publishing and I have found them all to be high quality and enjoyable books. An excellent choice.
Great Book with a Great Lesson.......2000-11-27
This is a magical book that teaches kids a lesson about not giving up and trying. It is a great story with beautiful illustrations. All of my kids love this book.

I gave your book 5 stars because your books was interesting and has a lot of facts. They have a lot of colorful pictures.I can not wait until you come. .
Seth at Ashley River El........2000-10-11
I think this book is a great book. My teacher Mrs. Allen read it to me and my class. Swimmer was a fiction and non-fiction book. Shelley Gill will be coming to our school on Monday October 16, 2000. My favorite thing about this book is the facts and the story. My two favorite characters were the little girl and Swimmer. It was astounding to me how the salmon knew where and how the salmon knew to go to the ocean. I gave it a 5 stars because of its action. I thought that it was scary when Swimmer was about to be eaten by a killer whale. I loved how he hid so close to the ledge, and how the salmon jumped. My teacher told us a story about her adventures with salmon. She also told us about how people watched the salmon jump up streams and being eaten by a Grizzly Bears. I thought that was sad how they were eatan, but again I eat them too. When I eat salmon I eat it eather baked or fried. Swimmer was an awesome book to me and some of my friends. I hope Shelley Gill likes our school and enjoys our students!
Michael at Ashley River El........2000-10-11
I think it was a good book but not the best. I give it 4 stars but 2 thumbs up. I like the part with the killer whale.
Victoria at Ashley El........2000-10-11
This book is a wonderful book. It teaches you the life of a salmon and what they eat and what eats them. It is very interesting, too. I like the story very much. I gave it 5 stars because it is so informative. Anybody can read it. I also like it because it is fiction and non-fiction. It was colorful and fascinating. I love Shelley Gill books and I hope to read another one soon!
Scott at Ashley River El........2000-10-11
I thought this book called Swimmer by Shelley Gill was a great book.It told good facts for kids.I can't wait till Shelley Gill comes to our school on Monday. This book is terrific for kids of all ages.Salmon are great to learn facts about during their growing. Our fifth grade teacher Mrs.Allen read this book to us.
Book Description
Young adventurers Riley and Alice visit the pristine wilderness of Southeast Alaska in order to solve a puzzling salmon migration mystery: Why are Pacific Salmon thriving while North Atlantic Salmon are more endangered than ever? Riley's daring quest for answers features moose, bald eagles, grizzly bears and a very special guest appearance by world-renowned animal expert, Jack Hanna.
Customer Reviews:
Grizzlies, eagles, salmon--and a cameo by Jack Hanna!.......2007-08-27
It's no secret that my son and I love these books--and this one is no exception! The story of salmon migration in Alaska is exciting enough on its own, but then they throw in hungry grizzly bears, diving eagles and menacing moose to really up the excitement factor. As usual, the thrilling tale is told through wonderful kid-friendly text and breathtaking animal photos blended into vibrant watercolor backgrounds. There's nothing else like it on the market--and I did I mention that animal expert Jack Hanna makes a surprise cameo to help Riley in his time of need? Trust me, the little adventurer in your family will love this stuff!

A must read!!.......2006-09-05
Robert Wolfe's Playing With Fish is a must read! This beautifully written collection of essays is seamlessly tied together through the sensitive, thoughtful, and entertaining voice of the author. Reminiscent of Edward Abbey's works, this book discusses the profound connections and relations between man and nature in an ever-industrializing world, and the significance of culture within it. One of the best books I own! As a cultural anthropologist and a lover of stories, I heartily recommend this book!!

Book Description
Engaging profiles of whale researchers and their latest findings on the magnificent creatures they follow, from humpback, to gray, to orca.
Book Description
Famed for its wild nights and lazy days, Madrid provides a whole lot more, whether your interests lie in spectacular opera productions or chirpy folkloric zarzuela; in cutting-edge cuisine or ancient, tiled tabernas; in designer shoe shopping or strolling around flea markets. Written by resident journalists, Time Out Madrid also covers the artistic jewels housed in the Prado, Thyssen, and Reina Sofia, as well as the etiquette of watching a bullfight or joining in with a flamenco performance. Special sections include In the Frame (the intriguing stories behind some of the city's best-known paintings), Sophisticated Snacking (where to find gourmet tapas and wine-lists to match), Winding Down (the yoga centers, spas, and Turkish baths springing up all over town), and Up, Up and Away (climbing, skiing, and hang-gliding within reach of the city).
Customer Reviews:
OK, maybe, but not for me........2006-08-05
The basics are here: what's where, hotels, restaurants, museums, and the rest. If there were no other guides to Madrid, this would probably be OK. If you're a twenty-something party animal, it's probably quite good. This has a strong emphasis on night life, music, and sport. It points out the places that are friendly to same-sex social life as well as the more traditional venues. If you're in the target demographic, you'll probably like this a lot better than I do. I have just a little time away from a business trip to enjoy the city, and I'm looking for a different side of the city.
Irrespective of the book's intended readership, a few things about it annoy me. On the positive side, it's attractively illustrated. Too often, though, an enticing picture has no caption and offers no way to find out more. Worse, although p.7 assures us that "no establishment has been included because it advertised in any of our publications," an awful lot of pages look just like advertisements to me, the kind that you'd see bought and paid for in travel magazines. The most annoying of the ads, though, are the many for other "Time Out" guides and products.
So, decide what you want and what you don't want in a travel guide. If you differ from me in both areas, this guide might work for you. In that case: great! It's just not for me.

the best madrid guide we found.......2006-05-06
After living in Madrid for six months, I can honestly say this is the best guide that we found for recommendations on local bars, cafes, restaurants, shopping, nightlife, and tourist attractions. For people with a limited amount of time in the city it might be best to go with a tourism-focused guide like Rick Steves which gives you specific itinerary recommendations, but Time Out would still be a good secondary guide for those folks. It contains extensive information on all of the usual and unusual tourist sights, including up-to-date pricing and hours, as well as an abundance of listings of bars, restaurants, and cafes that contain more locals than tourists (which I prefer). I know I'm sounding like an ad for Time Out, but this was the first time I'd used one of their guides and I was impressed. It ended up being the one we turned to again and again, when we needed a recommendation but wanted something that would feel truly "Spanish" (and not created for tourists). We also found their day-trip info for the surrounding towns very helpful. I couldn't more highly recommend this guide.
Must take book.......2005-04-10
If you are going to Madrid there are two books minimum you must read before hand and take with you: Eyewitness Guide Madrid, and this Time Out Guide. I have been to Madrid several times and always take the most current version of the Time Out with me.
To understand why the books are so good, you need to know that Madrid has the greatest number of bars and restaurants per capita of any city in the world. In Spain, the people of Madrid are given the nickname gatos, which means cats, because they stay up all night. They go to work at 8am, leave at noon, go home and sleep after the big meal of the day, return to work at 5pm, work until 9, leave work and go to tapas bars, where they have one drink and a snack, move to the next. Keep moving until around 11pm, when they stop for dinner, then it is off to a disco club, flamenco club, or a bar. But the same m.o.: in for a half hour or hour, then move on again. At 4:30 am on the weekends there are traffic jams because the streets are so busy. And I saw only one person who was drunk, that person undoubtable a tourist. The locals have fun, but behave themselves.
This is why the Time Out guide is so valuable. Even if you dont want to stay up until 4 am, the Time Out guide assumes that just as important as the monuments and art musems, the lifestyle is a 'must do' part of your stay. The book has 109 pages devoted to details on cafes, bars, arts and enteratinment. There is another 22 pages just on shopping; the 18 pages of hotel listings are detailed and a good source of information. The first 34 pages do a solid job of covering history, architecture, and modern Madird; 44 well done pages on sightseeing sights. Although the Eyewitness Guides usually win the best map award, the maps in this guide I think are acutally a little better. Slightly larger and they include the bus routes.
Two of my favorite places I found by reading this book, both on the same street 4 doors apart. The Time Out guide says "CARDAMOMO, open 9pm-4am daily. If you've got any interest in flamenco or salsa, this is an essential stop. The dancing varies from eye-catchingly sensual to reassuringly clumsy. No one here gives fig about such niceties, and the gitano flavour ensures the music can't be resisted for long."
The other is "EL BURLADERO open 3 to 3:30am daily. A packed two-storey locale off Plaza Santa Anna that's regularly full of copupes swinging each other round to flamenco, shouting Ole, and clapping. On the upper floor its calmer and a bit more space."
The descriptions are accurate, you wont find them in the other books. You would miss alot if you didn't have this book on your trip. When you go to Madrid, use the jet lag to your advantage; sleep in the middle of the day and early evening, get up at 10, go out for dinner, wander the Plaza Santa Ana area, catch a flamenco show, and see if Madrid isn't one of your all time favorite cities.

Madrid Guidebooks Compared.......2001-12-28
I am an experienced traveler (30+ countries) who is nearing retirement and plan to travel extensively, who has recently become obsessed about finding "good" guidebooks. So this review is a comparison of the books I looked at for Madrid.
I started with the Insight Guide. I was seeking to get background, history, etc. The Insight Guides seem to vary enormously from one to the next in both quality and orientation. I think they are good for an entire country if you are trying to decide where in the country or what parts you want to see. I thought the guide for Madrid was useless. It provided very little information about the city or the culture. It seemed to be best if you were planning on moving to Madrid and wanted to find out the differences between the various suburban areas. I suggest you forget this one.
I looked at the Mini-Rough Guide. I didn't like the format and it was too terse for my taste. In my opinion, Rough Guide still needs to produce a guide for Madrid that is a regular, not a mini Rough Guide. The LP Guide to Madrid seemed pretty mediocre. The stiff covers also made it awkward to use or hold open to a particular page. The information and descriptions were inadequate compared to some other guides. The Eyewitness Guide to Madrid is, I think, the best overall guide to Madrid. (Generally I prefer Eyewitness guides for City's much more than as a guide for an entire country.) The maps are good, the pictures of the food and other items are very helpful. The hotels and restaurant sections were pretty good, but not great. If you are looking for hostels, you will need the LP guide. Eyewitness does not give great historical depth, but it gives you some, probably enough for most tourists. Guide Books are not the best source for detailed historical and cultural information anyway. The Time Out guide was almost like a tourist's yellow pages, primarily a listing of hotels, restaurants, sites, services, etc. It had the best listing of restaurants and hotels and covered all price ranges. It wasn't as good as Eyewitness is describing the things to see and do.
I ended up getting the Eyewitness Guide to use while sightseeing, supplemented by the Time Out guide for picking hotels, restaurants and being able to look up things. Another reviewer recommended this same combination in order to visit Tapas bars. I'm not that much into Tapas, but I still think these two are the best combo.
Incidentally, the Spain Rough and LP guides Madrid sections do not cover Madrid as well as the Madrid-only guides. You are looking at a 60-page section, compared to the Madrid-only guides of around 300 pages length.

If you are going to Madrid there are two books minimum you must read before hand and take with you: Eyewitness Guide Madrid, and this Time Out Guide. Speciality is where to do........2000-01-31
What differentiates this British born travel guide from the others: extensive coverage of the places to go and the places to be, specifically the bars and restaurants, cafes, where to hear what kind of music. The Time Out coverage is much more personal and extensive than the other guides, giving you places the other guides dont and a much more useful review. The guide to have when planning what you want to experience when not at the museums or the Palace (which is especially important in Madrid, where nightlife goes unitl dawn). A very good guide to have.
