    Book Description

A collection of captivating tritone images by noted photographer Henry Horenstein, Creatures is available for the first time in trade paperback. Featuring 57 portraits taken at zoos, aquariums, and in the wild, Creatures presents readers with a surprising, sometimes unsettling, view of animals, exotic and domestic. With an artist's eye, Horenstein documents the startling commonality between man and beast. Horenstein's Creatures have been exhibited in New York, Boston, and Houston, and the photographer has sold several fine-quality prints from the project, including many of the smiling Beluga whale, sleeping California Sea Lion, and Hippopotamus amphibious, the cover image. Just in time for the publication of the paperback edition, Creatures will be on display this spring at the Ellen Kim Murphy Gallery in Santa Monica.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning bxw imagery of a wordless animal world.......2000-01-17

Henry Horenstein, who teaches photography at the Rhode Island School of Design and who has authored books on everything from color theory to horse-racing, offers us a wordless 80-page portfolio that will simply take your breath away. These are black and white "portraits of all manner of living things, made in zoos, aquaria and in the wild, shot on Agfa's wonderfully lush Scala black and white slide film, then translated into equally lush Ilfochrome, or on occasion, platinum prints. These, in turn, were printed in tritone to maintain the wide range of tone in the originals. You never have seen creatures portrayed like this, or in such wonderful juxtaposition: the graceful feathers of a flamingo in close-up on the left; a seemingly identical image on the right--only it is an overhead view of a school of carp. If Horenstein had relied only on closeups of hides or feathers, or on tortured abstracts, I would not be so ecstatic about this work. But he manages to capture the "animalness" of each creature while bringing a fresh perspective to it. Only the wildlife photographs of Frans Lanting have affected me as much. --Frank Van Riper, photography columnist, the Washington Post

5 out of 5 stars Great little guide.......2007-07-27

This guide is the right size (I carried it in my pocket) and gave me all the info that I needed for a great trip. I particularly loved the walking tours through the many "neighborhoods" outlined in Paris - and the guide gave me info on a lot of "off the beaten path" shops, stores, restaurants and attractions. It had good, solid current Metro information - and it's tips on cheap travel in and out of Paris (I stayed by CDG airport) saved me about twenty euros a day in train cost. I would highly recommend this guide (and I am sure I will use it again).

    1 out of 5 stars Undependable .......2007-05-28

My wife and I spent 3 days in Paris based on this book's recommendation. I'll guarantee you...you will get lost on your 2nd day, and you'll be bored to death on your 3rd day unless if you enjoy shopping over sightseeing. Here is my advice...Do not spend too much time wasting at unknown (less-known) places like what this book is recommending.

3 out of 5 stars use with caution.......2007-04-20

If you have researched your Paris trip but you don't want to lug around your travel books on your trip, I would get this book. It is small, light, user friendly but it not all inclusive. I read Let's Go Paris, Lonely Planet and Frommer's prior to my trip so I have a general idea of what I want to do already. I'm taking this book with me so I have the locations of museums, metro stops, and restaurants that I might want to check out.

2 out of 5 stars Title Should Be "How Christi Daugherty Wants to Spend Her Day in Paris".......2007-01-07

I bought the book thinking it would help me make the most of 3 days in Paris. On net, I would say it added very little. The section on Monmartre was useful -- most of the rest not very. As much as I hate to say it, Rick Steves does a much better job in helping one make the most of their time in Paris. In addition, some of Christi's picks were just bizarre. For example, if you had two days in Paris, the gastronomic capital of the world, why would you make one of your meals a falafel sandwich, no matter how good it was.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic Suggestions for Seeing Paris.......2006-04-21

This guide is awesome - I wanted something that would give me relevant suggestions on what to REALLY do in Paris - not just the touristy stuff. Paris Day by Day includes the author's own suggestions on places to eat (some are out-of-the-way and non-touristy) and the best times of day to be at certain places depending on the atmosphere. Other benefits of this guide:

-up-to-date admission fees and operating hours of attractions
-restaurant descriptions and average meal prices (in actual numbers, not just $$-$$$)
-walking directions from place to place on each tour
-a fold-out map of the city (in its own pocket - it can be separated from the book), and a map of the Metro system.

There's a tour for everyone in this guide, from the monument afficianado, to the gourmand, to the shopper, to the outdoorsy-person, to the nightlife-lover.

2 out of 5 stars Not original, poor layout.......2007-08-16

I brought this book with me to Paris and ended up buying 2 other guidebooks once I arrived there. The maps were hard to use and the suggested itineraries were really just the status quo. I recommend Lonely Planet instead for cheap and unique ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The one book you need for paris.......2002-08-20

If you take one book with you to Paris, this is the one to take. Absolutely great book. explains how Paris is laid out. Recommends hotels in various price ranges weather you are looking for a youth hostel to crash in by yourself, or a hotel for the family with amenities to keep the kids entertained.
This book includes current attraction listing along with current times and prices. It will guide you to great restaurants, night life, or attractions by arrondisement. It also includes a Metro Map and a Map of the City and smaller maps of each of the major neighborhoods in Paris. I have been to Paris 4 or 5 times in the past two years and this book has never steered me wrong. It does a great job of ensuring your trip to Paris is everything you hope for.

5 out of 5 stars Planning made easy!!.......2001-03-12

This book was recommended by a friend who had just been to Paris. It has all the information you need, from how to get from the airport to your hotel (shuttle is best), to hotels (listed by location and price), to restaurants(by area, specialties and price). It explains the cuisine of the different regions of France and which restaurants to find them in. It also notes the ambience of many restaurants, ie French attitude, or catering to non-French speaking patrons. It explains the best ways of getting around Paris, the top ten sights, off the beaten path sights, shopping guides for everything from jewelry, to wine, to porcelain, to food etc. It has guides and maps for wonderful walking tours of the different arrondisements (areas/distrcits) that take you past historically, literary and architecturally significant places. It tells you about the tourist sights (Moulin Rouge) where Parisians rarely frequent, as well as the places Parisians love to go. It also has information on organized tours, tips on Museum passes and Metro passes and a decent regular sized folding map of Paris is included in the back. Additionaly, there is wonderful information on trips outside of Paris, such as Versailles and Chartre. This makes planning your trip fun and enjoyable. This book is well worth owning if you are going to Paris soon, and if not buy it anyway, planning ahead is always a good idea!

4 out of 5 stars joy in paris.......2004-03-08

i recently returned from my first trip to paris. in preparation, i reviewed multiple guidebooks and took with me two. the four i considered most promising were let's go paris, rough guide paris, frommers paris from $90 and fodors paris.

of these, after the trip, i must say that let's go paris was the most helpful with copious useful maps and tips, in addition to accurate and abundant recommendations on housing, dining and entertainment. frommers was the second most useful in planning and understanding the city.

although i thought that the rough guide would be beneficial, the maps were limited in detail and annotation. also, dining etc was not listed by arrondissements which made searching very difficult.

fodors was nice, but not particularly useful for the moderate income traveler compared to the others. frommers paris i briefly reviewed but found much less useful than this frommers guide.

5 out of 5 stars Loved my adventures in Peru!!.......2004-01-06

Frommer's helped me to see so much of what I was hoping to see. With the planning that I was able to do with the guidebook, I experienced everything that I imagined the country could be and more. The detailed descriptions within the book helped me to pick out the venues that I knew I had to visit. And they were so beautiful....

        5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-08-15

My husband and I were in Paris in April 2000 and this book was all we needed. We found a very cheap hotel ($ 40.00 for 2 people), booked it before we left and found everything as described in the travel guide. We had no problems finding the restaurants we wanted to go to. Overall, a great guide for people who want to travel cheap, but nice. And--we found it to be up to date. If you go to Paris, don't miss the catacombes!

        1 out of 5 stars Dated Information.......1999-11-30

My family used this guide in Paris recently and found most of the locations for restaurants and to be at least five years old - especially the budget ones. On a number to occasions, we located the street address only to be told by the new owners that the restaurant has not been in existence for a number of years. It remains amazing to us that Frommer a very well know guide publisher in the West and Paris being an important distination, would not keep this volune up-to-date. We ended up wasted a lot of time literary searching deadends, before disposing of this book and taking the kids to the nearest McDonald for lunch instead. I suggest looking at Foder guides instead, they are several notches above.
