Book Description
Dive into Zoo Album for a fascinating and mem-orable encounter with a wonderful array of animals. The ten animals portrayed are: western lowland gorilla, Sumatran tiger, black rhino, Tasmanian devil, short-beaked echidna, little penguin, Andean condor, komodo dragon, green anaconda, and poison arrow frog. Their personalities, habits and habitats are as diverse as the food they eat and the sounds they make.
Capturing the reader's attention with its superb realistic illustrations, Zoo Album also informs with facts and details about the animals and how they live. The basic facts for each animal are: name, age, height, weight and food preference. There is a general description of behavior and living conditions. Moreover, "Did you know?" boxes provide unusual information followed by a statement from each animal's keeper -- the person best able to describe its personality and special characteristics.
Zoo Album is eye-catching, fun and interesting. After reading it, children will visit the zoo with a new, constructive understanding of the experience.
Enhancing the volume for educational purposes is a handy "Resources" section, which provides links to websites that offer loads of pictures and rich information about zoos, animals, wildlife, and issues of extinction, conservation and environmental awareness.

Amazing facts about truly fantastic animals.......2005-04-12
Karen Lloyd-Diviny's artwork illustrating Richard Morecroft and Alison Mackay's informative text about the kinds of animals a visitor to the zoo would be apt to encounter is of museum quality work. Zoo Album takes the reader on a tour of various amazing real animals living in zoos. The animals' keepers offer insightful comments about a Komodo dragon so fearless that the keeper could simply take it for a walk to its new cage rather than ship it in a box, and the tasmanian devil who loves to scavenge, a talent her keepers encourage by dragging the food around her living area and putting it in a different hiding place every time. A fact-filled picturebook introducing young readers to amazing facts about truly fantastic animals.

Book Description
A unique new archival-quality photo storybook that is so easy-to-use, it's a perfect child's first scrapbook. Parents and kids will love how easy each book is to assemblejust slip a standard 4x6 photo into each archival-quality PP photo sleeve. No cutting or pasting required!
Each charming story is sure to delight young readers with rhymes, small words, repetition, and simple sentences as they read stories about special events in their own lives. And the pictures from each event will give your child clues about the words on every page.
Because the text on each page provides cues for picture organization, even if you buy the book before the event itself, you and your child will know exactly which pictures to take to fill each photo sleeve. And kids can dress up each photo sleeve with stickers or embellishments, while parents rest easy that the photos will be protected by the archival-quality photo sleeves.
Also included in each book are 5 wide-ruled journal pages for "more memories" and an acid-free/lignin-free memory pocket at the back of the book for more photo memories or for other keepsakes from each event.

Moon guidebooks vary quite a bit!.......2007-09-20
I usually buy Lonely Planet or Moon guidebooks for US travel. Often I carry both. Lonely Planet books tend to be very straightforward and consistent, often the product of a "committee" of authors. Moon's books seem more conversational in tone and are the product of one or two authors and therefore can vary more in style. I usually prefer Moon books to Lonely Planet due to their more descriptive nature. This is not one of them. This book lacks the imagination in style that most Moon books have. Planning a trip to Oregon? Go Lonely Planet.
Moon-Excellent tour guide.......2007-03-12
I enojoy Moon guides every time I read them. very detailed, updated with all relevant info, phone numbers, etc.
Gives you the tip for the non common places, guide you to places along roads in resolutios of feets and where to find the places.
Great Guide To Oregon.......2007-03-02
MOON OREGON is one of the most comprehensive guides to Oregon ever published. Whether you're looking for the urban pleasures of the Portland area and/or the Eugene/Corvallis/Salem corridor, the healthy activity ideas of Eastern Oregon or the Oregon Coast, or a little of everything, this book has it for you. Even if you're not travelling to Oregon any time soon, you'll find MOON OREGON to be an interesting and exciting read.
For the nature lover in you.......2006-11-27
This is a good book for those that plan to spend most of their trip on the trail, or in the national, state, and local parks. It is also great for those that like to stay in a nice hotel and look out their windows at nature and wonder what's out there. In this way, the book should be an addition to your information that you gather before going to Oregon. Frommers is a good companion book. Between the two should give you enough information to make good decisions on where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. It is an accurate guide with resources for more information. We went to Oregon and stayed in just about every lodging type there is - hotel, motel, lodge, b&b, vacation home, and cabin. Moon was a handy companion the whole time.
Out of Date.......2006-09-20
The Moon Handbook for Oregon, sixth edition, is packed with interesting information and history about areas throughout Oregon. Includes scenic pictures and some nice black and white street maps of various cities with points of interest labeled. The book is broken into regions (Portland, Willamette Valley, Coastal Oregon, etc.), which makes referencing handy when traveling through an area. Also has a nice index at the back.
My primary complaint is that the book does not appear to be current. Although the publishers date on Amazon indicates that the sixth edition was released in 2004, the price estimates for lodging and attractions were significantly off, noteworthy hotels and restaurants built since 2002 were not mentioned, and several restaurants were closed.
Overall a good reference for location, things to see, weather, outdoor recreation and sights. Just take with a grain of salt that the price quotes and lists are current or complete. I'm hanging on to my 2006 AAA tourbook for current(though less detailed)information on lodging, dining and attactions in Oregon.

Book Description
In few other places is the meeting of land and sea so dramatic and beautiful as along the Oregon coast's 360-mile stretch from the Columbia River to the redwood forests spilling over the California border. Experience firsthand why residents refer to this coast as "The Edge." Moon Handbooks Coastal Oregon features lively town-by-town portraits, from the resurgent Victorian hospitality of Astoria to the family-friendly resort attractions of Seaside, the understated sophistication of Cannon Beach to the hard-working fishing harbor of Newport; extensive coverage of the outdoors with highlights of hikes through ancient rainforests, excellent fishing for salmon and steelhead, and year-round whale-watching excursions; and details of coastal cuisine, where chefs fully exploit the freshest regional ingredients, making the Oregon coast a haven for visiting gourmets. In the tradition of other regional Moon Handbooks, Coastal Oregon is engaging, thoroughly researched, and eminently useful. Highlights of coastal history, environment, politics, and local lore are intertwined with carefully selected amenities and services to guide the reader on an enriching and successful travel experience.

Customer Reviews:
A great travel companion.......2002-07-10
This book was very useful in my trip around south central Alaska. The content was up to date and specific and his reviews of the restaurants/lodging held true. As radio connections were sporadic, we took turns in reading the guide out loud as we traveled from one place to another. Not only was it very informative, but also Don's humor was a pleasant addition. Use other books for research, but bring this one along.
Keeping The Wheel Turning.......2001-02-25
I'm the original author of this book, having researched and written the 1st edition in 1983. After that, I got very involved in writing about the South Pacific islands and had to bow out, so I'm happy to see the way Deke and Don have developed the book through five subsequent editions. Last summer my wife and I returned to the area and tried following my old edition. It was striking how little had changed and we enjoyed our trip immensely. We pitched our tent on some of the same sites I'd used nearly two decades earlier! I suggest you use the far superior new edition of Alaska-Yukon - it's a wonderful part of the world, and you're in for a real adventure.
Alaska - Yukon Handbook.......2000-04-20
This book has been truely invaluable in preparing for a trip. It is not written in the normal dry style of many travel planners, but with wit and humor. As I read through the tidbits on the communities the author's dry humor and research come through. He is not afraid to tell you where the tourist traps are and when those self-same traps are worth a look because of the tacky items in them. The commentaries are honest and straight forward. Well worth the read if you are planning a trip to Alaska.

Customer Reviews:
Good Primer Before Going.......2003-12-06
I purchased and fully read the book for the purpose of preparing me for a recent two week trip to look over Oregon before a possible move there. The authors provide good quantity and quality of information about everything from history to permits to make-up of modern Oregon. If a reader purchased this book as his overall primer prior to travelling Oregon, he would do well. If one is interested in specific activities such as camping or fishing, there are better books. My only criticism is that although needed information is pretty much in this book, I had to do a lot of reading to get it rather than be able to look at the table of contents and pick my subjects. I would have liked, for example, a section just on camping and an explanation of free facilities like most state parks and about the permits required and where attainable for federal forests and other areas. The information is in the book; you just have to dig for it a bit. Overall, I am glad I purchased this book.
Oregon Handbook.......2002-08-07
As general reading this book is OK but I felt that it really missed the mark in its attempt to be a guide to Oregon. There seem to be a lot of holes in it. Also items that are listed in the index are not where they are supposed to be.
A good guidebook by well-fed authors.......2000-08-11
This guide offers Moon's usual comprehensive treatment of local histories and sightseeing details. Despite some awkward English, it is generally reliable and reasonably complete.
After some perusing it becomes clear what is a major interest, even passion, of the authors and apparently a subject of extensive research by them - food. In every town, ample attention is given to restaurants, listing appetizers, main courses, desserts, even ingredients. . . three pages on Bend are devoted to eating, as are 11 pages in the Portland section. There are also two pages of reviews of golf courses that are replacing mountain meadows in the Bend area.
Unfortunately, the space devoted to food reduces what can be covered regarding another Moon staple - nature. In the Bend area, there's no detail on where to go hiking in the Three Sisters Wilderness. On Crater Lake, there's no park map and only two of a dozen trails are described.
The detail on what to see in many localities makes this book a worthwhile purchase for anybody planning a visit. But if you are as into nature as many readers of Moon guidebooks, expect to supplement the book with National Forest maps and a good local hiking guide.

Customer Reviews:
Surprise, we have a history after all!.......2001-04-24
Silicon Valley is the subject of daily news, and is the home of so many marvelous inventions. Yet to the naked eye, the area is incredibly unremarkable. Martin Cheek has transformed my view of the area (I live here) and put interest in the otherwise uninteresting. For instance, I found out I live less than a mile away from a comedy club that housed the first pong (video game) location. It's still not much to look at. . . but hey!
I would recommend this book, not to the tourist (do people really visit Silicon Valley on tour?) but to the local. It will help you put the history in perspective, and it will make you a better tour guide. The reading is a bit tedious (more like a history book), but side stories about the more colorful characters make it all worth while.
Not enough practical business travel information.......2000-11-21
As a frequent visitor to the Silicon Valley area, I find difficulty with the fact that there are still no books directed towards business travelers. This area is NOT a tourist spot, so I found this book, while historically interesting, not particularly helpful for my requirements. Practical advice like, "good luck finding a room during the week" was not included.
Now Silicon Valley Has A Guide As Amazing As Itself........2000-07-30
My eyes were drawn to the unusually attractive cover of this book, for it has a perfect color photograph of the world famous Winchester Mystery House, a mansion with hundreds of rooms. That was built by the heir to the Winchester gun fortune, Sarah Winchester. By legend, a fortune teller told her to keep the building process going as a way to atone for all the Indians killed by Winchester firearms, and that as long as she did that she wouldn't die. In the past I couldn't suggest much more to Silicon Valley visitors than a visit to the Winchester Mystery House, or perhaps the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, which houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts west of the Mississippi. I simply thought of the San Jose area as being mostly a cultureless wasteland in suburbia, but things have certainly changed there. I was raised in the Bay Area, and over the years the occasional errand takes me through, but I had no idea that there were so many interesting things to see there. In part this is attributable to the accelerated urban development brought on by the computer industry, and in part it's because I didn't bother to monitor progress in the greater San Jose area, but that's also because no one had previously published a guide book filled with so much of its local history. Now that I have Martin Cheek's book, I look forward to my next visit for any reason. There's an article called William Shockley - Brilliant Weirdo (The author was de-emphasizing his subject's unpopular opinions about race) on page 19, and it explains how Shockley won the Nobel prize for being the co-inventor of the transistor, the cornerstone of the high tech industry. Speaking of controversial people, another interesting person is mentioned in an article on page 191: "The Holy City Of Hilltop Hustler "Father Riker." Denounced as an eccentric cult leader by some, Riker is also fondly remembered as the most colorful character in the history of San Carlos. From 1918 until about 1941 his Utopian community was active on a mountainous summit to the west of the downtown area. Riker's large signs advertised the greatness of the white race, and his original commercial buildings provided a great variety of roadside attractions for those traveling between San Jose and the seaside community of Santa Cruz. The old highway still cuts through the mountains, but Riker's businesses greatly declined when his stop was bypassed by a much more modern and faster highway. All that remains of Holy City today are a few private buildings: Riker's house, garage, a storage shed, and the timeless background of beautiful hills that his visitors liked to use as the background for their photos. Across the street from Riker's house, where the commercial buildings once stood, the owner of a modern glass shop (Which uses the name Holy City Glass Shop) keeps original copies of Riker's old newspapers posted up on his bulletin board. After getting introduced to that site through Mr. Cheek's book, I found out that there was a book in print by Betty Lewis titled Holy City - Riker's Roadside Attraction. I'll let you know how good that is after Amazon sends it.
It's about time!.......2000-04-18
Finally, a great book on the history and exciting places of Silicon Valley. Despite being born and raised in the area, I wasn't familiar with all the places Cheek highlighted. This book is not only informative, but fun and easy to read. If you like to explore and you either live in the Bay Area or will be visiting, this is a "must have" book. Believe me, you'll be glad you bought it.
Silicon Valley Handbook by Martin Cheek.......2000-04-16
Great information on the Silicon Valley. Would make a great welcome gift for employees who are new to the area.
