Book Description
This textbook begins with an overview of NMR development and applications in biological systems. It describes recent developments in instrument hardware and methodology. Chapters highlight the scope and limitation of NMR methods. While detailed math and quantum mechanics dealing with NMR theory have been addressed in several well-known NMR volumes, chapter two of this volume illustrates the fundamental principles and concepts of NMR spectroscopy in a more descriptive manner. Topics such as instrument setup, data acquisition, and data processing using a variety of offline software are discussed. Chapters further discuss several routine stategies for preparing samples, especially for macromolecules and complexes. The target market for such a volume includes researchers in the field of biochemistry, chemistry, structural biology and biophysics.
Customer Reviews:
A nice book for your NMR.......2005-11-11
This book clearly illustrates the major aspects of NMR spectroscopy, instrumentation and applications in a relatively simple language without the use of complicated mathematics. The questions at the end of each section reflect the main points of the contents. It can be used as a self study textbook for beginners, as well as a reference for teaching and research in NMR spectroscopy.
NMR for Novice Master and Refresher.......2005-09-27
The book is a complete saga of NMR with relevant references. To learn NMR for macromolecules, just go through it.........you will reach the destination.
the first totally thorough book on the subject!.......2005-09-02
This is an impressive and detailed book for anyone who wants to know NMR. I found in this book all what I need about protein NMR from basic level up to most advanced triple-resonance experiments. This textbook (or reference book) is helpful for all levels of students and experts. After reading through the book, I feel like I am an NMR expert because the book not only teaches the new thing I did not know but also summarizes what I already knew. I showed it to my friends and they all like it just by looking at the table of contents. I totally agree with the reviewer's comments printed on the book cover:
"This is the first totally thorough book on the subject..." by Lawrence J. Berliner, University of Denver
"While NMR treatises abound, there exists no single text that provides both the information necessary to understand the experiments and processes, as well as the practical details for their successful implementation. This considerable gap in the literature is now happily bridged by Quincy Teng's timely contribution." By Gerd N. La Mar, University of California, Davis.
An excellent text!.......2005-05-13
This is a great addition to the NMR catalog. Dr. Teng combines theory, instrumentation and application in a text that is easily accessible to everyone. A must have for any student of biological NMR!

Book Description
The technique of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an important tool in biochemistry and biophysics for the understanding of the structure and ultimately, the function of biomolecules. This textbook explains the salient features of biological NMR spectroscopy to undergraduates and postgraduates taking courses in NMR, biological NMR, physical biochemistry, and biophysics. Unlike other books in the general field of NMR (except the advanced treatises), the approach here is to introduce and make use of quantum mechanical product operators as well as the classical vector method of explaining the bewildering array of pulse sequences available today. The book covers two- dimensional, three- dimensional, and four- dimensional NMR and their application to protein and DNA structure determination. A unique feature is the coverage of the biological aspects of solid- state NMR spectroscopy. The author provides many selected examples from the research literature, illustrating the applications of NMR spectroscopy to biological proteins.
Customer Reviews:
Good coverage, but very deep.......2003-11-11
I needed quick education in the basics of how NMR helps understand structure in proteins, DNA, and RNA. I have only a general background in science, but hoped I could pick up an outsider's knowledge of the basics.
This book has been helpful. Any problems are in my own preparation for reading it, not in the book itself. This dives straight in at the deep end, going over the quantum mechanics of spin-coupled nuclei. Given that base, it follows an orderly path through the menagerie of biomolecules. That starts with structures of single proteins, even in cases where they can't be crystallized. The discussion includes a number of brief case studies of specific proteins. Next, it covers enzymes in bound and unbound states, also in terms of case studies. This section makes clear some of NMR's advantages over other techniques: cryological studies of intermediate states, in vivo studies, and information from light-isotope tagging. The following section discusses DNA at length. I guess that interest in RNA secondary structure entered the main stream after this book was published - more discussion of RNA structure would have been helpful. This section also addresses DNA/drug interactions, a topic of clear interest. The chapter ends with a short discussion of saccharides and glyoproteins. This is an area that I keep my eye on. Sugar chemistry is more complicated than DNA or proteins - it can be non-linear, for one thing - and just as important in a functioning organism. (Because of polysaccharides' complexity and indirect connection to genetic molecules, they are not well studied. I look for this to change in coming years.) The next section follows logically: protein interactions with lipids, as found in cell membranes and virus interactions.
The book's content is very rich - a bit too rich for me, in truth. I usually pick up technical information pretty quickly. I struggled with this book, though, and just didn't have time to get the full value from many sections. I imagine this book will be essential to serious NMR chemists. I'm still looking for a more digestible introduction.

Book Description
NMR has become the most diverse spectroscopic tool available to date in biomedical research. It is now routinely used to study biomolecular structure and dynamics particularly as a result of recent developments of a cascade of highly sophisticated multidimensional NMR pulse sequences, and of advances in genetic engineering to produce biomolecules, uniformly or selectively enriched with
13C,
15N and
2H.
Features of this book:
• Provides an up-to-date treatment of NMR techniques and their application to problems of biomedical interest
• Most refined multidimensional pulse sequences including the basic aspects are covered by leading NMR spectroscopists.
The book will be useful to NMR spectroscopists, biochemists, and to molecular biologists interested in the use of NMR techniques for solving biological problems.

With so many famous places and hyped attractions, it's all too easy to get caught running (well, driving, actually) all over Southern California from one spot to the next. This guide tells how to get off the freeway and explore the boulevards and side streets of Los Angeles and San Diego as well the coast roads and inland desert highways. Hidden Southern California combines traditional attractions, including seven historic missions and eight theme parks, with outdoor adventures, including 123 beaches and parks, 270 hiking trails, and 105 surfing spots. It provides selective recommendations for lodging in the city, along the coast, and even in desert and mountain parks, including 15 beach cottages, 77 coastal inns and 13,193 campsites at 350 campgrounds. The author offers opinionated reviews of a wide variety of local restaurants. The guide also contains special features on Los Angeles' historic Mexican public markets, Hollywood film making in action, the ultimate side trip south of the border, and old-time Hollywood, including 15 historic theaters and a driving tour of old mansions.
Customer Reviews:
Standard Tourist Sight-Seeing Guide.......2006-09-15
While the guide may review restaurants, hotels or museums that are not typically covered in other guides, its failure to address local activities was disappointing. Information on bike rental shops, scuba shops, fun tours or other things are absent. If you want a guide to more than hotels, restaurants and museums you might want to reconsider this purchase.
Don't leave home without it..........2004-08-07
I checked out several tour books before we left for our southern California vacation, but chose the Ray Riegert book for it's unique suggestions for food, lodging, and tourist site recommendations. The book is well organized. We followed the chapters from San Diego through the beach towns all the way to Los Angeles. We were delighted with all of the "hidden" restaurants that we tried. It helped that all of the information was current too. Riegert's suggestions for interesting routes and parks led us through some of the most beautiful country imaginable - places we would never have seen if it were not for this book. Hidden Southern California is a great resource that we will use again and again.

Good for the tourist or a new resident.......2001-08-23
This guide book covers all the bases, and even includes interesting historical digests of various districts in the Los Angeles area, the high desert and the low desert. The information is organized to assist tourists on short or longer visits, includes lots of "hidden" opportunities to eat, sightsee, or shop away from the beaten path, and is even helpful for a new resident to the L.A. area, who may not be sure where to start digesting this incredible city or the landscape around it. Highly recommended.
Excellent Guide to Southern California.......2001-06-13
This guide gave me all of the information I needed to have a wonderful vacation. The information was candid, and thoughtfully presented. There were many tidbits of information/ sights I would never had thought to see if it wasn't for this book. My vacation consisted of renting a car at LAX touring along the coast (stopping at places recommended in the guide) Heading down to San Diego and then returning to LAX by traveling inland and seeing Temecula etc. It was a fun filled 10 days and all I used was this guide. If you just want the basic tourist jargon, buy a Frommers guide, not a hidden one... :-)
