Good Book.......2006-10-30
I thought the book was quite intriguing. I am not sure that I buy the idea that we have a massive amount of these people in the world today, considering the present state of affairs. However, like most of Montgomery's books, it is thought provoking. I would recommend it to anyone interested in spiritualistic studies.
Very interesting........2006-03-08
This was one of my first metaphysical books and it helped open my mind to other such subjects. The walk-in concept is very interesting, and Montgomery really makes it seem plausible. Since reading this book years and years ago i have run into many other writings that mention similar phenomenon, thus concreting my belief in walk-in type beings. I really like and recommend anything written by Montgomery, whether or not it is true is up to you but my mind is open to suggestion.
Excellent book about Walk Ins!!!.......2003-08-17
I've found all of Ruth's books really have hit home with me, but this one is amazing. She is the person that brought the word, walk in, to the American public, and knows what she is talking about.
As I was reading it, I found it to be very logical, commen sense, and I knew that this was real, as amazing a process as it is. Then I proceeded to write to the people that she was talking about, and listened to what they had to say about it. I've since made good friends with a Bio Sensitives named Charlotte King. ....
She is the only tripple Walk In on the planet, did you know that? And she is so down to earth, honest, and caring. Very loving.
After talking to her, I discovered that I was also a BioSensitive person, and could see how it was affecting my life. I was VERY sick right before the Kobe, Japan Earthquake (a famous one!) and once it happened, at the exact time, all my symptoms went away! She told me how to deal with the reactions, how to learn from them.
So yes, I totally believe Ruth Montgomery about the Walk Ins. They are quite amazing people!!!
Jason Winters is another one. Here is his site! He makes a tea that purifies your blood so that you can Heal things wrong in your body. Check it out! It works! .....
There are many others in the book. But these two are very nice people, doing good on this planet. Definitely worth meeting.

Gripping.......2001-06-06
I believe in UFO's and even think there is something to Ghosts - but the idea of Walk-ins is going to take some acceptance - but I'm getting there. Thankfully over 90% of the predictions for the last twenty years have not yet happened. What this book really needs is substantiative evidence with reasoned support for the theories put forward. There is nothing to convince you to believe unless you want to. As fact/fiction it is gripping - well worth a read

In solid journalistic prose, the Washington Post's Roberto Suro illuminates the critical issues associated with Latino immigration to America--including poverty, bilingual education, and the relationship of Latinos to blacks as well as whites--by depicting the lives of Latino immigrants and their children, all of whom are struggling to make a life for themselves in the United States.
There's a lot more to Latino immigration than Southern California; from Puerto Ricans in New York City to Cubans in Miami, Latinos are transforming America's ethnic makeup and economy. Suro examines why the immigrants come and what happens to them once they've arrived. With an eye to the future (in which Latinos, if organized, may represent a powerful voting bloc), Suro offers common-sense suggestions on how the Latino community can take a proactive stance on illegal immigration and English-language training to facilitate full integration into American society.
Book Description
Strangers Among Us is a lucid, informed, and cliché-shattering examination of Latino immigration to the United States--its history, the vast transformations it is fast producing in American society, and the challenges it will present for decades to come. In making vivid an array of people, places, and events that are
little known to most Americans, the author--an American journalist who is himself the son of Latino immigrants--makes an often bewildering phenom-enon vastly more understandable.
He tells the stories of a number of large Latino communities, linked in a chronological narrative that starts with the Puerto Rican migration to East Harlem in the 1950s and continues through the California-bound rush of Mexicans and Central Americans in the 1990s. He takes us into the world of Mexican-American gang members; Guatemalan Mayas in suburban Houston; Cuban businessmen in Miami; Dominican bodega owners in New York. We see people who represent a unique transnationalism and a new form of immigrant assimilation--foreigners who come from close by and visit home frequently, so that they virtually live in two lands.
Like other groups of immigrants who preceded them onto American shores, Latinos, as they begin to find a place for themselves here, are changing the way this nation thinks of itself. These are people who defy easy categorization: they are neither white nor black; their households often include both legal and illegal immigrants; most struggle toward some kind of economic stability, but so many others fall short that they have become the new face of the urban poor. Some Latinos endure the special poverty of people who work long hours for wages that barely ensure survival. Their children grow up learning more from their televisions than from their teachers, knowing what they want from America but not how to get it.
Looking to the future, we see clearly that the sheer number of Latino newcomers will force the United States to develop new means of managing relations among diverse ethnic groups and of creating economic opportunity for all. But we also see a catalog of conflict and struggle: Latinos in confrontation with blacks; Latinos wrestling with the strain of illegal immigration on their communities; Latinos fighting the backlash that is denying legal immigrants access to welfare programs. Critical both of incoherent government policies and of the failures of minority-group advocacy, the
author proposes solutions of his own, including a rejection of illegal immigration by Latinos themselves paired with government efforts to deter unlawful journeys into the United States, and a new emphasis on English-language training as an aid to successful assimilation.
Roberto Suro has written a timely, controversial, and hugely illuminating book.
From the Hardcover edition.

a very insightful and compelling book............2007-05-31
I first read STRANGERS AMONG US: LATINO LIVES IN A CHANGING AMERICA, by Roberto Suro, as a college student in a Chicano Studies course. Though, our class had "Chicano" in the title, it wasn't completely centered specifically on the Chicano/Mexican American experience. We also took a wider look at the experience of Latin Americans, in general. Writer Roberto Suro, the American-born son of Ecuadorian and Puerto Rican parents, brings insight and sensitivity to the plight of Latinos immigrants (be they South or Central American, Mexican or Caribbean). Keep in mind that this book was written prior to 9/11, and Suro's take on the xenophobic attitude toward immigrants doesn't examine our terrorism-infused view of foreigners, in the United States (and throughout the globe). I do believe that this book still remains very insightful and engaging, because Suro is a very good writer because he is inclusive toward readers who aren't familiar with the various plights resting on the heads of Latinos (particularly, the young, under age eighteen crowd who feel the pressure of gang violence, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and an epidemic of youth dropping out of high school). I definitely reccomend this!
Strangers Among Us Review.......2006-09-09
As a kid growing up in El Barrio in New York, I witnessed first hand the struggles and impoverished conditions of many Latinos. Mainly Puerto Ricans and Cubans but others as well. Back then it seemed as if there was just no way out of that stagnant exsistense. It never occurred to me that perhaps there were external forces at work to keep us from advancing. Roberto Suro's Book explores the socio-eco-cultural dynamics that have shaped life for the Latinos in the United States. The author takes us thru the different enclaves of Latino neighborhoods and one by one identifies, point by point, many of the elements at play that have affected the growth or lack thereof of the Latino in the U.S. A well written book and highly recommended.

Changing Faces.......2006-05-10
In the book, Strangers Among Us, the author, Roberto Suro explores several dynamics about Latino Immigration. He reminds us that Latinos vary in nationalities and is the largest growing population migrating into America. This book gives the reader a realistic view of the changing demographics in America and how Latino immigration can positively or negatively shape the future of our country. Suro also thoroughly examines how Latinos are becoming a crucial part of America's struggle with poverty and race.
Suro dissects the first generation of Latino immigrants and then the second generation of U.S born Latino children. He mentions how the Latino second generation is failing and that it's easier to fall into a decline, rather than move up beyond the everyday barriers. He identifies that the problems arise from children who are advancing quicker than their parents. The children become so absorbed in to the awful parts of the American culture. While the immigrant parents stay detached and continue to focus on making money and saving it. Parents quickly become separated from their children's developmental stages and don't remain a positive cultural influence. Instead, the children adapt to the negative behaviors of American ways, and some immigrants don't know any better.
All of the struggles immigrants face is emphasized in the book, from receiving citizenship, to getting and maintaining a job, and receiving an education. Suro states that the risks of immigrants failing, increases their urge to embrace American culture and that the assimilation process is more willingly achieved to better their life in America. But what about the Latinos who choose to keep their culture and don't embrace the American culture? That is where the struggles and challenges come in, because class and identity interact with the struggles of living in America.
Another important point mentioned in the book, is the idea of how vulnerable immigrants become as they migrate into America. It is easier to live, get out of poverty by molding into the American culture. This all includes learning and speaking English, going to school and moving out of the barrio and transitioning into an American. If an immigrant is able to let go of their culture and embrace America's, their transitional process will become much easier .
Throughout the book, Suro introduces you to several different Latino immigrant families and describes their transition and how they're surviving. He takes you through different Latino communities across America, including Florida, Texas, California and New York. He even targets the gang life of inner city Los Angeles. This issue exploits the concerns of increasing gang life within the merge of minorities in America.
Suro supports the need to keep immigration under control. He states fear of back fire if we choose not to do so as a country. The acceptance of culture isn't an issue it's the adjustment and assimilation issue. Coming to America illegally isn't easy; it presents several challenges. Adjusting to the whole new economic, social structure of America, involves several transitional steps, and getting to know the English language is a vital step.
Suro emphasizes that education is the foundation for Latino advancement. With about a third of the Latino population under the age of 18, education needs to be enforced. The book takes you into the inner, less structured cities of immigrant populations and explores the high crimes rates, gang interaction and the rising teen pregnancy rates. I agree with Suro statement, that "we need to do something quick about the decline immigrant advancement or else a Latino underclass will be created permanently". Latinos need to take advantage of the economic opportunities they are given.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and how Suro opens the doors to an inside view of the positive and negatives of the Latino Immigration and their struggles that come along with it. Not only did I appreciate all of the new information I gathered but I have gained more respect for Latino immigrants. This is a great book for anyone to read, to reach deeper into the Latino culture.

In his book Strangers Among Us, Roberto Suro talked about the problems faced by Latino immigrants in this country. He covered some complex problems in great depth. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the Latino immigrants and their reasons for coming. The information provided by Suro helps us understand the plight of Latino immigrants. He tried to suggest possibilities that could have helped alleviate some of the problems. The problems of these immigrants are not only theirs, but ours as well. Suro also suggests that immigrants have some responsibility to learn English, but also need to make the decision of who they are and where they are going. The immigrants are here because they want a better life, and because businesses want them here, but there needs to be a move toward encouraging legal means of arrival. In spite of the fact that this country is in a transitional period moving toward a global economy, we should help those who want to become Americans also. This book can lead to a better understanding of the history of the situation
An educational read.......2006-04-21
I found Strangers Among Us very captivating and educational. I chose this book because after reading an excerpt I realized how little I knew about the Latino population and their lives in America. I always understood the basic concepts of their immigration to America but I have never understood why they traveled here and for what reasons. Their culture was unknown to me yet I interact with them on a day-to-day basis and have lived next door to them my entire life. Strangers Among Us appealed to me both as an educational and pleasurable read, and helped answer some of the questions I had about this continuing large minority population.
A disturbing chapter for me was about the cantina patrols and how differently Mexican-Americans are treated. It was interesting to hear how one officer readily admitted that he could never get away with the same kind of treatment in a white or African-American neighborhood. If these officers know what they are doing is wrong then why do they keep treating people this way? In my opinion, these officers do it because they know these newly arrived immigrants will not resist and they can get away with it. While reading this it reminded me of the same cycle African-Americans have had to go through in trying to live in this country.
In New York, Puerto Ricans are also facing difficulties surviving in the new world. Suro makes clear that most Latinos entered the United States as sojourners, meaning they come to America to work and make money with the intentions of returning back home when they are done. When Puerto Ricans migrated to New York in the 1950s and early 1960s, they came with great hopes and dreams. In the end, some of the PuertRican population did succeed, but too many ended up poor and with less than what they arrived with. Many Puerto Ricans realized that they lacked the education, skill, and culture to make it up north in the big cities. Many who migrated north were losing too much and decided to either return home or try their skills in cities with greater outlooks such as Miami, where the Latino population is continually growing.
From reading this book I have learned a lot more about the Latino population and their immigration to America. By hearing real life experiences I have noticed my own stereotypes toward this minority group. I never understood the hardships many had to endure just to provide for their families. Before this class I used to think that the African-American population was the only minority group that was discriminated against but Strangers Among Us changed my perspective on the way others and myself treat groups that are different from our white race.

Sound advice and compassionate counsel..........2005-09-24
"A 'Stranger' Among Us" is no less than a fabulous resource. The book's title is accurate, but quite modest: Though written with a focus on finding support persons for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, this book is nonetheless a valuable guide for families of persons with physical challenges, mental health difficulties, dementia, and serious learning/cognitive limitations as well. This book has a place in the library of any professional or agency serving challenged individuals and their families, and I heartily recommend it to family members and prospective support personnel alike. The author's personal experiences, professional training, extensive knowledge, and abundant compassion combine to provide a tool that is at once accessible, accurate, and wise. This book is a "must-have" resource, a generous and courageous gift.
Excellent Resource.......2005-08-14
Lisa Lieberman's book is a excellent resource for anyone requiring outside assistance in their home. Well-written and well-researched, I am sure it will be a great help to many people.
A must for a medical library.......2005-08-12
A fantastic addition to my medical library to use for all of my patients who have family members with disabilities. The book provides many answers and practical help for those seeking and employing in-home support. It is written in an easily readable, user-friendly format.
I most appreciate the sample advertisements and the sample contracts provided. It also helps give permission to those who stay at home to consider in-home help.
Great Resource for Anyone Hiring In-Home Support.......2005-08-05
A "Stranger Among Us" is very well written, with easy to follow examples and even worksheets to greatly assist with the hiring process. I especially appreciated how the author allows us to benefit from her "hands-on" experience in her own household, and also includes input from some of the providers that she has employed. Also the reader benefits from extensive research put into this book regarding boundaries that should be established between you and the "In-Home Provider" .
The information and insite offered in this book is amazing. This book illustrates how to endure the difficult and time-consuming process of hiring the right person for the job who will also 'fit" with your family, how to see if the support is working as well as expected and also includes a chapter "When It's Time To Say Goodbye".
A "Stranger " Among Us is a must for anyone who intends to hire "in-home" help, whether you require special support for disabilities or to hire someone to assist with the everyday tasks of a busy household.
Detailed and Diverse.......2005-07-23
FINALLY, a book that understands the true needs of families and how to help us proactively help ourselves. One of the most difficult dilemas when you have a loved one or child with special needs, whether medical or neurological, is how do you find qualified, caring caretakers? So often as family members we find this task so daunting that we choose not to seek outside help. This book is so reassuring, it gives you the tools to find qualified care, but also the right people for YOUR family.
The thing that strikes me about this book is not only how detailed in strategies it is, but how respectful it is about different kinds of people and their diverse needs. One chapter in particular that stands out is Defining Your Family Culture and Needs. This author recognizes that families have different values, and she discusses how having caretakers who match those values can create harmony, or finding caretakers who are different can enhance a family's life by exposing them to a new way to look at the world. It celebrates the benefits of both and the right to make the choice that is right for your family.
This book has step by step instructions about the various ways to go about hiring caretakers, in and out of home, the strategies you can implement in order to find the best match for your family, there is also a strong emphasis on the role of communication and having mutual respect. She recognizes that a caretaker can become part of your family (which we have certainly found to be true.)I could go on, but it is so incredibly detailed that I couldn't possibly do it justice. This book takes all the guess work out of finding a caretaker, all the things I have wondered and worried about facing when our current caretaker eventually move on to other endeavors. The book makes facing that so much less frightening. I HIGHLY recommend this book not only for parents of children with special needs, such as myself, but as a template for anyone seeking qualified care for their loved ones, whether they have disabilities or not. This book should be on hand in every library and every program that works with families in order to provide an understanding of the need for qualified care and how to how to provide in home supports for those families. I already have two copies and am planning to buy more to make sure our local therapy centers have them in their libraries.

The Edgar Award-winning mystery writer Laurali R. Wright returns with an atmospheric account of murder and madness in a sleepy town on Vancouver Island. The story expertly addresses themes from of repressed memories, and juvenile justice, while questioning the past performance of Wright's protagonist, police detective Karl Alberg. Evocative of the wave-lapped shores and wild inlands of the Pacific Northwest,
Strangers Among Us is hard to put down.
Book Description
Sullen and withdrawn, homesick and angry, fourteen-year-old Eliot Gardener has been headed for trouble ever since his family moved from Nova Scotia to the damp, grey Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. But not like this. Not standing on the bramble-choked, blood-soaked beach where his parents lie murdered--and his sister slashed--by the machete he has turned on them...and can't remember why!
Some say Eliot is a bad seed. RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg doesn't buy that. But the case weights heavily on him, for he knew the Gardeners and he should have seen something coming. And now, poisoning the joy of his and Cassandra Mitchell's wedding plans, a piece of his own past--the survivor of another shattered family--is stalking him. Someone else he's failed. Someone who wants revenge.
And until he can lay to rest the madness of that past, Alberg cannot hope to enter the silent mind of Eliot, where a time bomb is ticking away.

Intelligent/moving mystery akin to the work of P.D. James!.......1997-06-20
L.R. Wright moves us with the intelligent portrayal of a life wasted.
Her central characters of Karl Ahlberg and his
fiancee Cassandra are well rounded, likeable, and
all too human.
You will find your heart aches for the boy in this book, and at the same time he will frighten you.
Wright has the gift of eliciting emotion from her readers.
Her supporting characters (Sid & Bernie) flesh out
the story such that you want to read more about them as well. Altogether a great read!
Waiting, waiting, waiting..........1997-05-03
I kept waiting for this book to develop something: a character that seemed real, a situation with depth, a conversation with substance. And to no avail--I finished the book without any of those things happening

Book Description
Pastor Mark is sitting in his office at the church. He and his wife Susan have been at the Church of Christ for nearly eight months. Sure, the church has gone through three pastors in the last five years, but somehow, Mark had thought that this time it would be different, After all, God has called him to preach at the church in this small town. But now, he was beginning to have doubts. What were the Lord?s plans for this church? Was he giving up on the people? Did He plan to allow things to go on until the church folded? Did God have special plans for this church? Was Mark and his wife a part of God?s plan? Mark was ready to give up. After all, didn?t Jesus himself say that when the people refuse to listen, shake the dust off and move on. If only God would bring someone into town to shake things up, maybe then, the people of the church would change. But Mark knew that change had to come from the inside, and most of the people have hardened their hearts. If only they could see the love of Christ, maybe then, there would be change; and then again, maybe not.

Michelin Classics.......2005-08-31
Unfortunately it seems 2002 print is the latest available at present, which means some admission times and charges are no more correct. Nevertheless, it is a guidebook with the standard Green Guide outlay with lots of town plans, suggested tours (both in towns and across region) and the easy-to-find alphabetical list of sights. What I didn't like is the index where sights (castles, villages) described within proposed tours are often missing and there is no simple way to find them in the guidebook. This is a flaw that I met in several other Michelin Green Guides I used in the past. On the good side, information is mostly adequately detailed and with a car driver in mind (positions of car parks on the maps, road numbers etc).
I LIVE IN FRANC E- GREEN GUIDES ALWAYS RELIABLE.......2005-05-20
I have lived in France for over two years, and have traveled to over 50 places all over the country.
I have chosen the Provence Green Guide to review because it's my favorite region; though all of the guides are similar. I might also mention that I have not actually seen the English version of the Green Guide - I only use the French ones.
That being said, I have tried and looked at MANY guides of France. The Green Guide (or Guide Vert) is the best for FRANCE. For other countries this is not the case.
The maps are useful; the rating system is very, very useful (and pretty close in my opinion); and the sites they recommend are very good. There is also a recommended walking path for each city map - a sort of top place to walk around if you are rushed, during a train layover for example. The many photos of sites, buildings, and cities is nice; they are often a critical deciding factor in my travel choices. Though more often than not the photos dont do justice to the quality of the fantastic places in France.
There are a few things of course i don't like (in terms of selections of sites et al) but nothing is perfect.
Since the Green Guide is from a French company (Michelin) obviously they can get a lot of good information and insight into the guides. Best of all, they have a regional focus. Since I live in France, my need for a national book is minimal; I only go to more or less one region at a time over a long weekend or week.
The Green Guides let me take my time, give me travel ideas that a France-wide guide would not give, and is pretty reliable.
On a separate note, i do not use any of the times for the sites; in France, opening times are unreliable. You are best off using the net or just taking your chances.
In the end, whatever your guide, France is a fantastic country for tourism and it's also wonderful to live in.
Useful overview.......2003-02-18
The green guide for Provence provides a very useful overview, along with pertinent information such as opening/closing times (the Pont du Gard at opening, approx 7:30 am, is not to be missed--marvel in the silence). Used it, along with Rick Steves's France guide in 01, and will use both again in 03.
some like it plain.......2001-03-26
Having just returned form a brief sojourn outside of Avignon(one of numerous visits over the years to the South of France) I found the Green Guide as indispensable as ever.
These oddly shaped, distinctive volumes dispel whatever remains of Peter Mayle's cute and condescending presentation of the region. Here instead is an ancient and noble land of sunlight and wind, which has created strangely shaped stones and mountains surrounding ancient olive groves, endless vineyards, wide rivers, and more Roman remains than can be found in Rome. The magical Middle Ages are here, too, as well as the quintessential visions of Cezanne, the native son, and Van Gogh, the wandering Dutchman. As your eyes do the looking, this highly useful green book will filll you in with all the information you will need on plants, stones (manbuilt and otherwise) weather, rivers, geology, and above all history.
What you see around you is explicated with an appropriate Gallic resserve, accuracy and precision, so that you can meditate on the land without any editorial interference. The format of the Green Guides is unique, reflecting their self-confidence that, like Popeye, and all unique creations, they are what they are.
And the small maps included in the descriptions of many of the most important sites are, as befitting a maker of tires and maps, perfect. If you love France, you will love this book and all the others defining that land for travelers from near and far.

As other Michelin Green Guides, this edition includes comprehensive descriptions of towns, sights, culture and much more. I especially like the tips for dining out, the list of cultural events, market days and such. Highly recommended!
A Travel-Planner's Must-Have.......2000-09-04
You can't logically compare a travel book to a novel or a history, and there's probably no single set of criteria for a good travel book. But, for a travel book focusing on Brittany, there should be an eye on history and a focus on what makes a place significant or scenically beautiful. The style of the book should be lively, the voice and attitude of the author should be evident, and book should contain useful and practical details to reduce hassle and fuss. It should have an opinion, and it should be believable. The objective of all of this is to assist the planning which will in turn make the vacation enjoyable and personally relevant. In our case, we have not traveled to Brittany yet, so we are looking for a way to see a few of the best sights.
The Michelin Green Guide to Brittany scores top marks. That is why I rated it 4-star. It is clearly written and has a nice style. It contains vast amounts of informative geographic and historical material, and there is a lavish number of maplets and photographs. However, it cannot stand-alone and be the only guidebook to Brittany that you will ever need. It needs to be combined with Philippe Barbour's Brittany, and perhaps, the 60 or so pages on Brittany and Nantes in the Lonely Planet's guide to France. Although the content is fabulous, the Michelin Green Guide is arranged alphabetically, not geographically, so one needs to do a lot of page turning to understand a sub-region within Brittany. The Lonely Planet and Barbour logically arrange their sections geographically, connect them together, and contrast them. Both The Lonely Planet and Barbour have nice sections on housing-hotel areas and specific hotel recommendations, and Barbour does the best. The Lonely Planet is, unfortunately, focused on one-star places and below.
The Michelin Green Guide to Brittany is a solid 4-star performer in the area of trip planning and definitely on the recommended list.

Book Description

You don't need anything else... except maybe the red guide.........1998-08-28
When I travel to Europe, I never fail to get the green guide of the country I plan to go to, and the corresponding red guide. One tells me what is worth to be visited, the other advises me on restaurants and hotels. I appreciate the accuracy and I trust their star system. I feel I can trust the guides and I believe Michelin when they claim not to get any money to give stars to restaurants, hotels or cities (which is not always the feeling I get from some other guides)
