Silent Spring, released in 1962, offered the first shattering look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists. Rachel Carson's book focused on the poisons from insecticides, weed killers, and other common products as well as the use of sprays in agriculture, a practice that led to dangerous chemicals to the food source. Carson argued that those chemicals were more dangerous than radiation and that for the first time in history, humans were exposed to chemicals that stayed in their systems from birth to death. Presented with thorough documentation, the book opened more than a few eyes about the dangers of the modern world and stands today as a landmark work.

Book Description

First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1962, Silent Spring alerted a large audience to the environmental and human dangers of indiscriminate use of pesticides, spurring revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water."Silent Spring became a runaway bestseller, with international reverberations . . . [It is] well crafted, fearless and succinct . . . Even if she had not inspired a generation of activists, Carson would prevail as one of the greatest nature writers in American letters" (Peter Matthiessen, forTime's 100 Most Influential People of the Century). This fortieth anniversary edition celebrates Rachel Carson's watershed book with a new introduction by the author and activist Terry Tempest Williams and a new afterword by the acclaimed Rachel Carson biographer Linda Lear, who tells the story of Carson's courageous defense of her truths in the face of ruthless assault from the chemical industry in the year following the publication of Silent Spring and before her untimely death in 1964.

1 out of 5 stars The Facts!!.......2007-08-07

Perhaps her cause was just in writing this book, but her short-sighted ignorance of the repercussions was inexcusable. Because of the ban on DDT which largely resulted from Silent Spring, the WHO has estimated that around 20 MILLION children have died of malaria.

DDT was, & still is, one of the very best insecticides to control mosquitoes, the sole transporter of this deadly disease. Best of all, DDT is very NON-toxic to humans.

The need for DDT is so urgent that even the Sierra Club is justifying it's use inside houses in malaria stricken locations of Africa, South America, & Asia.

Way to go Rachel. Save the Birds, Kill the Children...Wake Up People!!

3 out of 5 stars Important but boring.......2007-06-13

I thought that "Silent Spring" would be an interesting book to read. After all, is supposedly launched the modern environmental movement. However, after reading about 80 pages into the book I started to feel like I was reading the same thing over and over again: pesticides and herbicides are bad and should not be applied to the side of the road. OK, I get the point. I then flipped to page 250 or so, and do you know what I saw? More discussion of how pesticides and herbicides are bad!

Maybe back at that time it was not a self-evident truth that it is a bad thing to go around spraying shit all over the side of the road. But even then, you would think that a disucssion of this matter could be confined to 100 pages or less. A final issue is that the book does not seem to possess a modern understanding of certain subjects (since when do hydrologists refer to groundwater as "underground rivers"?). Although this is not the fault of the book, I do not know why anyone other than a science historian would want to spend much time on it.

Oh Yeah, this book also killed millions of people. The banning of DDT probably led to millions of deaths from malaria. Even today, about 2 million people die from it every year.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Read.......2007-05-11

Joni Mitchell perhaps most aptly summarizes the driving idea of Silent Spring in her song "Big Yellow Taxi": "Hey farmer farmer / Put away that DDT now / Give me spots on my apples / But leave me the birds and the bees. Please!" While both the book and the song are a bit outdated in the United States as DDT was banned in 1972, it's still an interesting analysis of insecticides/herbicides, societies relationship with science, and the effects a capitalistic driven culture has on the environment. Likewise, the interaction of the natural web and human's impact on it is greatly emphasized. Something I've always found interesting about Carson and her book was the publics (often misogynistic) reaction to her as being "hysterical" and my favorite quote from a board member of the Federal Pest Control Review Board: "I thought she was a spinster. What's she so worried about genetics for?"

My daughter had to have this for English and of course she waited till the last minute. To her surprise, she enjoyed the book and the author's writing very much. As usual Amazon saved the day with a huge selection and fast shipping.

    Book Description

This book addresses the biological effects of the reasonably large number of classes of compounds that have been recognized as endocrine disrupters. These compounds have been found to persist as pollutants in the environment, and have been blamed for causing developmental disorders and/or fertility problems in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and possibly humans. This book presents the relevant fundamentals of the endocrine systems of animals and humans, the toxicology, developmental toxicology, ecology, and risk assessment methods, and lays out the current state of understanding for the whole field, organized by the classes of compounds that have been identified as endocrine disrupters.

      Book Description

From the final decades of the eighteenth century to the present day, a relatively few social and political documents have been written and circulated, then have gone on to change the course of human history. The Manifesto Series surveys some of those documents, presents an account of each manifestoÂ's immediate impact, then explains how and why its influence spread to a wider audience. Brief and concisely written, each title in this series makes engrossing reading and provides readers with insights into the dynamics of modern history. Each title in this series is enhanced with approximately 70 color illustrations. Lengthy excerpts from Rachel CarsonÂ's compelling Silent Spring are presented in this book, with extensive commentary and analysis. CarsonÂ's book, published in the 1960s, exposed the hazards inflicted on the earthÂ's environment by powerful industrial concerns. Her book focused especially on the harmful effects of DDT, while on a broader level it also questioned the domination of our culture by modern technology. Silent Spring thus became a springboard for a multitude of environmental movements and reforms which, to the present day, influence all of our lives for the better.

        Book Description

Endocrine disruption in wildlife has emerged as a significant factor in scientific debate about environmental policy. Using a risk-based approach, Principles and Processes for Evaluating Endocrine Disruption in Wildlife provides state-of-the-art information, principles, and processes for evaluating the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in wildlife. Although the topic of environmental endocrine disruption is one that has generated significant controversy, it is evident from available scientific data that endocrine disruption, including developmental anomalies and disruption in reproductive processes, may be of concern in birds, mammals, and other wildlife, including fishes. Principles and Processes for Evaluating Endocrine Disruption in Wildlife is a valuable reference tool for educational purposes as well as for environmental and industrial managers and planners, regulators, environmental and human health scientists, public health workers, and people involved in environmental law and policy. This timely document resulted from a major international workshop made up of scientists from academia, government, and industry, and it is a significant contribution to decision-making in both environmental science and policy considerations involving endocrine-disrupting chemicals and wildlife.

        Book Description

Environmental Radioactivity from Natural, Industrial, and Military Sources is the comprehensive source of information on radiation in the environment and human exposure to radioactivity. This Fourth Edition isa complete revision and extension of the classic work, reflecting major new developments and concerns as the Cold War ended, nuclear weapons began to be dismantled, and cleanup of the nuclear weapons facilities assumed center stage. Contamination from accidents involving weapons, reactors, and radionuclide sources are discussed in an updated chapter, including the latest information about the effects of the Chernobyl accident. Important revisions are also made to the chapters on natural radioactivity, nuclear fuels and power reactors, radioactive waste management, and various other sources of exposure. Several chapters provide primers for readers who may not be familiar with the fundamentals of radiation biology, protection standards, and pathways for the environmental transport of radionuclides. An Appendix lists the properties of the more important radionuclides found in the environment. The book concludes with a commentary on contemporary social aspects of radiation exposure and risks that offers analternative view to current, often excessive concerns over radiation, nuclear technology, and waste.

        Key Features
        * Describes every important source of environmental radioactivity
        * Reviews the vexing problems of radioactive waste management and cleanup of contaminated sites
        * Contains measured or projected radiation dose estimates for the major sources
        * Features 126 figures, 80 tables, and more than 1200 references
        * Discusses current problems in historical context
        * The two authors bring more than 75 years of combined experience with environmental radioactivity
        * Provides an understanding of the sources of environmental radioactivity and human exposure from the mining of ores to final disposal of wastes
        * Thoroughly reviews important contamination accidents

5 out of 5 stars The classic work on this subject.......2000-03-25

This is the 4th edition of this book, which suggests that it is worthwhile. And that is the case. It is lengthy, thorough, but surprisingly readable. Chapters talk about various subtopics in modest detail. Often, I could wish for more specifics, but for a book of this scope of subject, that would not be practical. Illustrations and graphics are informative and useful. The book is timeless, though new research of course makes the new editions necessary--We still have a copy of the first edition (from 1963) where I work, but a copy of the latest edition is essential if you work or study in the radiation field.

          Book Description

Organophosphorus and carbonate pesticides are used as insecticides, herbicides, nematicides, acaricides, fungicides, rodenticides, and bird repellents throughout the world. Today, organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides use is widespread on agricultural crops, rangelands, forests, and wetlands. Toxicology and Pesticide Use: Organophosphorus and Carbamate Compounds summarizes what is known about these pesticides from wildlife toxicology literature and discusses the potential hazards to wildlife by examining toxicity, environmental persistence, and use patterns of the pesticides. This information is critical to anyone involved in agriculture or agribusiness because of the impact of recent EPA rulings regarding the administration of these chemicals to crops. The book will interest toxicologists, environmental toxicologists, agrichemists, and all researchers involved in the study of the impact of these chemicals on the environment.

                2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2006-12-20

I used LP lots of times before, and some are better than other, some are really really good, but this was the worst one ever: I used it on a road trip from CT to Maine in December 2006: predictable hotels, compact somewhat boring descriptions, and lack of good stories, interesting details, none of the tips you look for as a traveller.. . Could use some passion.

4 out of 5 stars Not too shabby..........2006-09-28

I've always bought Let's Go whenever I travel, but they didn't have a New England book, so I had to get this one. The organization is about the same. It doesn't have as much detail as the Let's Go Boston that I also bought, but I suppose it was because this has more content. The writing is a lot more entertaining that LG though. Also, I found the public transportation info really helpful. I plan on going on a New England road trip someday and I'll definitely bring this book with me.

5 out of 5 stars About the reviews.......2003-09-05

Hey, I bought this book and liked it...and I'm a native New Englander. The coverage for Maine is particularly good, or at least I thought so.

However, I'm posting this not so much to let y'all know that the guide is good, but to say that this book is in it's third edition, published in 2001. All of the reviews here date from 2000 and before. They apply to the second edition of the book, not the third. So take them with a grain of salt, cuz LP changes it's content alot when they update old editions.

                Just my two cents.

                1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2000-09-19

I like Lonely Planet guides and find them very useful for other places. I also will concede that writing a guide of New England is really two books, a guide to Boston and a guide to everything else. I was psyched when I first got the book, but quickly became disappointed. I live in Boston and thought there were some big omissions locally. I found the guide to everything else to be lacking in major areas. I suppose if one is new to the area or only staying a week, this guide might be useful. For a reference for a New Englander, try something else.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2007-04-04

I am relocating to Boston and have been buying guides to do a bit of research on the city. The Lonely Planet Guide is by far the worse of those I have seen. The coverage of the city is spotty; large, interesting areas are left out, and when they are covered it's in a really haphazard manner.

I get the impression this book was created with the thought that it would be good to fill an empty niche in the Lonely Planet product line, with the underlying thought that a bad book was better than none. Steer clear.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy only one guide to Boston, this should be it.......2006-05-30

Hands down, the Lonely Planet guides win marks for layout and style. These are compact, information-packed guides which can be tucked in any pocket or bag as an on-the-go reference. Most other guide books are great arm chair references but completely impractical for traveling on the road.

The Lonely Planet Boston does not disappoint. It is glossy, full-color, packed with maps, and has a small footprint. It follows the tried-and-true Lonely Planet format: Facts for the Visitor, followed by Getting There and Getting Around practical information, followed by the sights, places to stay, places to eat, entertainment, and excursions out of the city proper. A mind-boggling amount of information is packed into this guide.

The guide opens with the obligatory History section, which is read only by delayed travelers desperate for reading material. The true gems of Boston history and cultural experience are spread throughout the book, as light green sidebars on topics such as The Big Dig, The Emerald Necklace of gardens, facts about the Boston Public Library, and profiles of influential citizens such as Mary Baker Eddy.

Activities and sights are organized by neighborhood, which makes planning things to accomplish in a day a bit easier. One great chapter labels Boston "America's Walking City" and lists dozens of walking routes through the region. One can take public transportation between different areas and then embark on several-hour-long walking tours.

The Lonely Planet Boston has a full index and fourteen crystal-clear, full-colored maps in the back. The maps alone are a reason to buy this book and stick it in your pack while you travel. Overall, this book is well worth the price, and if you only buy one book about Boston, it should be this one.

                  5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-01-04

Ideal for people who wish to travel to Boston or people who live in Boston but want to pretend they are a tourist to impress a lady or deceive an enemy.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Boston, but could be better for outside areas.......2001-08-09

As are almost all lonely planet books, this is a great, GREAT book for covering the metro Boston area. I recommend it as THE book to use, especially if traveling to Boston. It goes into depth on all aspects of Boston culture, down to climate, money scams, and gay and lesbian tourists. Although the book doesn't explain every site on the walking tours, it does give an overall, helpful picture of the tours in general. It also tells about the hot clubs and places to go, with regular updates and good descriptions.

However, if you're looking for excursions outsiode of Boston, or are, like me, a new resident of Boston, you may not want to get this book, becauise it focuses on the Boston area. In that case, get Lonely Planet:New England, or a new resident's book. And for a shorter, cheaper version of this book, get Lonely Planet Boston:Condensed.

                  Hope it helps.

4 out of 5 stars Great place to start.......2000-09-03

This is a great place to start if you don't know anything about Boston. It gives lots of interesting places and attractions to visit. Even thought most of the places mentioned by LP is concise and accurate, be warned that some of the "attractions" mentioned are over rated.

I spotted this Lonely Planet guide for the Cape at the library. Using it during a long weekend at the Cape made me realize I needed to own it. It contains a wealth of useful, interesting information about what to see and do--and every restaurant evaluation from it was accurate. This guidebook is worth every penny for a family or a couple traveling alone.

We would have never made it in Boston without this little book! The maps alone, especially the subway map, were worth well over the price of the book. We took the book everywhere we went and had a blast. It offers great advice about what to see, what not to see, places to shop, places to stay, places to eat, and anything else you can imagine. I also liked that it gave information on day trips to surrounding areas. I would recomend this book to anyone visiting Boston for the first time. We were there for two days and were able to see everything we wanted to see!!
