Book Description
Having passed the five-year anniversary since the tragedy of September 11th 2001, New York City looks forward to a brighter future. Constructions on the Freedom Tower and the memorial, Reflecting Absence, as well as a host of other development projects in the Financial District, are underway. Tourism is booming, too, with record number of visitors being reported for 2006, with roughly 5,000 new hotel rooms in the works through the end of 2007. Manhattan, with its glittering skyline, chic restaurants, world-famous museums and historic sights continues to draw millions of people from around the globe. As publisher of the city’s definitive cultural listings magazine, Time Out is uniquely positioned to keep visitors up to speed on all things New York. Visitor basics are here — accommodations from haute to humble; dining from fine to funky; and party destinations for every taste — all in a user-friendly design. Illustrated chapters celebrate the city’s fascinating history and architecture. A close-up look at Ground Zero reveals a thriving neighborhood bustling with tourists, restaurants, and bars. Delightful walks mapped point-to-point highlight intriguing local lore and legend.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible.......2005-01-30
The train directions are either out of date or were never correct to begin with. The book tells you to take trains that do not exist, and then they don't even include the phone number you need to call a cab when their bad directions make you end up lost. I can't fault the book for leaving out lots of good restaurants, but I can fault it for including some that were so bad they made me sick.
I cannot comment on everything in the book, but as a guide to restaurants, museums, and transportation it is the pits. I have used dozens of different travel guides in my life, but this is the only one that has ever been so bad I felt it deserved a negative rating.
Do not be fooled. If you are interested in New York's cultural sites or food that won't keep you up with heartburn, do not buy this book. It contains nothing but misdirections, and the people leaving me negative feedback just think it's hip to be a Time-Outer.
Fun and Simple To Follow Guide to the Vast CIty.......2005-01-09
Time Out New York (TONY) , which is updated annually, is a MUST for anyone visiting the city. The first chapter is a concise and fascinating history of New York, outlining important events throughout its vast history. Proceeding through this indespensible guidebook, you'll find detailed information about where to stay, eat, and drink, and the places and events not to miss in each neighborhood of the vibrant city. Because the guide is written by locals, the recommendations and warnings are pertinent and current from people "in the know," who astutely guide residents and visitors through the maze that would be overwhelming without this terrific guide. Each place listed also has address, phone, and often websited listed, as well as prices and review. The maps in the back of the book are easy to read and the book is well organized and indexed
Great Resource.......2004-09-10
Another great travel book from the British Time Out people, in the tried and true Time Out format: Not alot on history or architecture, like you get with the Eyewitness or Knopf guides, but a straight to the point attitude in a easy to research portable book up-to-date and very helpful. The Time Out viewpoint is that partaking of the life of the city is as important as looking at the sights, so there is always great information on what to do after the museum closes, how to enjoy the city. There are 75 pages on sightseeing, a 114 pages on Arts & Entertainment, plus sections on bars, restaurants, and shopping. Each section is broken down by location, so the restaurants in Soho are listed togther, as are the bars in Midtown, which is the right way to do it.
Great for research before the trip to get an idea of what you plan to do &when, with websites for the individual places listed along with phone numbers and hours of operation. The maps are good; there are some pictures (nothing like Eyewitness). This is a good book to get before you go to help plan your trip to get the most enjoyment out of it, especially for nightlife.
Best general guide to NY available.......2001-05-09
The Time Out Guide to New York is, in my opinion, the best general guidebook you can buy to the city. It's updated annually, so the material is fresh, but best of all it brings the Time Out attitude and style to the guide book series. It's filled with full color photos (similar to the Knopf guides) and the listings contain not only the usual sights, stores and attractions, but also some of the more funky, out of the way places.
Plusses:
- Comprehensive coverage of most areas (see restaurant note below) - Lots of photos - Web site addresses for most listings - Content is also on their web site (www.timeout.com and www.timeoutny.com ) and updated regularly. - Not just the usual "everything is great" attitude that you get with Frommers or Fodors. - Contains ads for shows, hotels, restaurants (I like this as it gives more of a picture of the item. NOTE: There's big disclaimer in the front stating that even though they accept ads, their reviewers are independent)
- Small enough to fit in purse or (larger) back pocket. - Good cross referencing between sections
Minuses:
- Restaurant section not comprehensive. It's still very good, but selective. This may be due to the fact that they also publish a very comprehensive restaurant guide to NY. - Portions of the museum section are a bit skimpy. For example, the Knopf guides have 3 or 4 pages on the Metropolitan Museum, including floor plans and highlights of each collection, whereas this guide has about two column-inches of text on the Met. - No web site listings for restaurants.
As I said, this is the best guide to New York I've found (and I have them all). Highly recommended.

Book Description
ollowing the lives of heroes, victims, and terrorists of September 11, 2001, Richard Bernstein, one of The New York Times's most skillful journalists, weaves the complex tale of a multitude of lives colliding in conflagration on that fateful morning. Bernstein takes us inside the al-Qaeda organization and introduces us to police officers and firefighters as well as some of the Trade Center workers who were lost on that day. And we follow the lives of the rest of America in the hours and days after the attack. This riveting, incisive, and authoritative account is destined to stand as the essential chronicle of this singular moment in our history.
Customer Reviews:
Ok but not the best one I've read on 9/11.......2006-09-02
While this book was OK, I found too much about bin Laden within the pages. I felt that part should be a separate book. All-in-all it was a fast read and somewhat informative. Good book for students to use if they are looking for both sides of the story.
Definatly worth the time to read.......2006-02-01
I found this book to be very good. It introduces you to many people involved to day.....from Mohammed Atta to the pilot of flight 11 to firefighters. I felt the book did a good job of portraying the events of that day from many different points of view. If you are looking for a book with lots of photos, this isn't the book. There's a small section of photos of some victims and photos of every hijacker involved that day. It also gives a detailed description of Osama Bin Laden and why he feels the way he does towards the U.S. The only part I didn't like is it kind of jumped around a little bit in the beginning. It starts with how different people started their days. It takes you almost up to the point when the first plane hit, then for several chapters talks about Osama Bin Laden. I actually skipped the whole Osama part until I had read everything else in the book. That's my only complaint. The last few chapters I found so gripping that I couldn't put the book down. I would def. recommend this book
"Once it has happened,it has happened forever.".......2005-01-27
This is,without doubt, the best book I've come across about that dastardly act committed on 9/11.We have all watched many hours of televised newscasts and specials covering this event;but what this book does is put human faces on the people who were involved.
The perpetrators of this act were filled with hatred and represent the many thousands of others like them who have bought into or have sympathy for an unbridled hatred called jihah. In contrast to them, are all the people who fell victim to this hatred and had their lives stolen from them, their families and friends. This book shows what it means to have good or evil in people's hearts.Unfortunately, the fight against terrorism will be long and difficult, but as history has shown time and time again, that good always prevails over evil.
This book presents the facts and shows how the terrorists set out to attack America, the bastion for freedom and liberty for the world. They were encouraged by a lack of action, and further, took advantage of the freedoms enjoyed in the country and the great benefit of doubt given them by a country whose fundamental concept is of freedom and liberty of the individual, whoever he is.While they like to demand, and take advantage of this free society, would themselves deny it to others, and seek to destroy it while imposing their own sick oppression, tyranny and hatred on their own people and anyone else they can.
While most of this book is very good,I take great exception to the attempt to compare 9/11 with Hiroshima,on page 247.
"Perhaps the only comparable event in history was Hiroshima, but even Hiroshimahad had taken place in the context of a declared war.Hiroshima was a surprise attack but not a sneak attack.Sept 11 was both.Pearl Harbor, maybe, but no warped stretch of any demented imagination, can a comparison of 9/11 and Hiroshima be made!Any such thinking is deplorable.
20 years of terrorist attacks going unanswered forced America to embark on The War on Terror. There is only one outcome that can be an option;and that has to,and will be, complete victory.Anything else is unthinkable.
And then again, on page 251,"What happened in Hiroshima and in the terrorism [in New York] is the same because there are many people who can't recover one tooth or one nail."Again,an unbelievable notion.
A very important paragraph on page 250 deserves quoting.
"Why were we hated so much? Hadn't we been on the Muslin side in Afghanistin? Didn't we help Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo? Wasn't it the case that millions of Muslins ,as
president Bush pointed out in his speech before Congress, practiced their religion freely in the United States of America,to which they had come of their own free will? Clearly,we had something to learn about the unreasoning and unreasonable anti-American fury that existed in the Muslin world, where Osama bin Laden was being treated not as a villain but as a hero. There was a lesson there someplace, and it would be contemplated for a long time into the future. In the meantime, public support quickly built, not just for a retalitory strike,a few cruise missles launched at a target, but for a long and complicated war against an only semivisible adversary. The Bush administration vowed to fight that war for a long time ,against the terrorists themselves and against those who harbored terrorists, which in the first instance, meant Osama bin Laden and the Taliban of Afghanistan."
How can anyone who is unwilling to fight for freedom expect to live in freedom?
I am writing this review just 4 days before the FREE ELECTION is to take place in Iraq.
Many countries have failed to support America, and it appears many would be joyful if America fails in her War on Terror.America won't fail and is in for the long haul;just as she was in WW1,WW11,struggle against Communism and other wars. These countries should ponder the President,s words."Either you're with us or against us."
On page 187 we are reminded of what the President said on Septmber 11,2001:
"Terrorism against our nation will not stand."
He has remained true to that promise.
God Bless America!
Sheds light on a difficult topic.......2003-08-14
The beginning of this book is very difficult to stomach. Although it has been almost two years since this horrific event, it still seems like yesterday to me. Right from page one, the author begins to talk about the people who jumped from the Twin Towers. He continues talking about this for a few pages. For me, seeing people jump is the one very vivid image that still haunts me. He goes into very graphic detail about the jumpers. About how one man was impaled on a street sign. Reading this book was like reliving Sept 11 all over again. If you're not ready to relive the experience, please do not read this book. The rest of the book gives a short bio on some of the terrorists and some of the innocent people who were killed on 9/11. The book also documents the growing hatred of Amercia and how the terrorists came to be. It was surprising to note just how much the FBI knew but how little they actually did.
The story of 09/11/2001........2003-02-10
This is the story of the attack on our country on 9/11/01. The story goes all the way back to the late 1980's and originates in Afghanistan. Berstein does a good job of describing how bin Laden and his group of thugs got their grounding in the basics of terrorism. Not only bin Laden but some of the other members (Atta) are described in their early life.
Along with the story of the terrorists, there are stories of some of the victims of 09/11/01. Bernstein does a good job in describing their lives, so we know what America lost in this attack. Unlike other journalists, Berstein gives reasons why the FBI/CIA did not pick up on the attack.
This is a good summary of the attacks and the reasons they originated. The title sums up the surprise Americans felt when the attack came.

This book captures the heart and soul of the city.......1999-02-24
This is one of the best short story collections I have read in a long time. Sharp, clear writing leads the reader into the heart of NY. A few misses, but more hits. The best stories seem to come at the end of the book, so if you don't like the first few -- keep reading. While all the stories are about or set in NY -- they offer up details of modern life that can be applied to any city anywhere. My only complaint is they haven't published a second volume.

Book Description
Tiffany works in Peeps Castle, keeping her coked-up boyfriend in drugs, her crazy mother off the streets, and her vulnerable friends together as best she can in this unblinkingly powerful debut by Timothy Reed. From the depths of abuse and neglect to the ironic stability of her lucrative job performing in a glassed-in booth on 42nd Street, Tiffany, still haunted by the voices of her “swine chorus,” is at the center of Showing Out, the story of a young woman and several of her co-workers. From her close friend, the birdlike Melanie who’s been in the flesh trade since she was thirteen years old, to the obnoxious transvestite Meeca, Showing Out paints indelible portraits of a handful of courageous fellow performers as they try to deal with their own love lives, drugs, AIDS, and the work. Punctuated by Tiffany’s memories of a childhood that included sexual abuse, an alcoholic mother, and an absent father, Showing Out tracks Tiffany’s struggle to move beyond her current life at the old Times Square—and Peeps Castle with it—juggernauts to its own end. Written by the daughter of renowned novelist Ishmael Reed, Showing Out is raw, real, and by turns hilarious and harrowing.
Customer Reviews:
Timothy Reed An Astonishing New Voice.......2007-05-08
Make no mistake, neophyte novelist Timothy Reed can write. Her command of language and plot is enthralling in this breakneck paced tale of a young woman, recovering from a long bout with alcohol and drugs, working in a peep show in Times Square and supporting an abusive boyfriend. The story has an undeniable ring of truth, and Reed keeps you rushing from chapter to chapter to find out what will happen next in the lives of her indefatigable heroine, Tiffany, and her friends, family and co-workers as she emerges from years of abuse and wrong thinking and learns to show out in more ways than one. The peep show milieu is fascinating and presented without judgment, quite a feat, and my jaw dropped at the end of the final chapter. Timothy Reed is an astonishing new voice and I cannot wait to read what she has in store for us next.
good read.......2006-11-11
i enjoyed reading this book because its unlike many books that are out now. The story is a bout a young girl living in New York City who's in an unhealthy realtionship and works nights as a stripper. Through her at times deeply painful lifestyle, there is a gentle melancholy beauty to the way she tell hers story and lives of the people around her. A fascinating read.
The Fast Life.......2004-01-27
Tiffany lives life in the fast lane..She's got more $ than she knows what to do with.. A beautiful lady suffering with schizophrenia, troubled by horrible visions and voices of a woman who abused her as a child. The abuse doesn't stop there...Tiffany goes thru the daily motions, makin that money at Peeps, just to keep her drug addicted, abusive man off the streets..No matter that he is no good for her, at least she doesn't have to hear the "voices" in her head as long as he's around.Tiffany's mom isn't much better, she's an alcoholic and always has her hand deep in Tiffany's pocket. Tiffany's friend Melanie, who also works at Peeps, has HIV and a myriad of problems of her own..Throw in a few fellow dancers, who at times will show themselves to be both friend and foe,one whom is a transvestite who shares a shocking secret with Tiffany, and you've got the makings of a hell of a ride!
Showing out never stops moving..It's a page turner to say the least..Timothy Reed did an outstanding job in her debut..Keep an eye on her.Diagnosed as a schizophrenic herself in 1988, this lady is ontop of her game..She's definately got a story to tell....
I couldn't put this book down, I read it in two days (a girl has got to sleep you know)..The descriptions of the characters weren't over the top..She gave you just the right mix of words to get you to picture everything as it was, in your head..It wasn't overly vulgar like some books can be..But it still got it's point across..Just don't let your 13 year old read it..
It was funny at times, sad at times, tragic at times, but it was true to life.If anyone has ever wondered what life is like on the schizo side of things, this book will give you a peek....
I don't know about you, but I'd like to see a sequel to this!

A personal insight into the city.......2006-07-08
I thought this book was terrific. Unlike a lot of travel books that are fairly impersonal and concentrate on the historical aspects, this book has 23 walks written by historians, novelists and journalists who have lived in the city long enough to know it from personal experience. It's great to hear little anecdotes about various places as you go through the walks. The Dorothy Parker walk takes you through all her old haunts as well as talking at length about her life and that of the other members of the Algonquin Round Table. A great introduction to a city that can seem impossibly hard to get to know during a short stay.
The Time Out Book of self-indulgent walks.......2003-06-13
The several walks that I tried were awful. They were prepared by people with some personal link to a particular neighborhood, and were unbelievably self-indulgent.
I believe it was walk 12, "Jagged Symmetries", that consisted largely of the author pointing out homes and restaurants where he had once hung out with Andy Warhol. The Peter Singer walk involves him pointing out buildings where he had offices when he was writing various books. Virtually no architectural information, or interesting historical information. Just personal reminisences that would have been best shared only with close personal frieds.
One walk a day.......2002-01-31
I like this book very much. I was in New York City for four days, and I did one walk each day. Each walk (there are twenty three walks in total) is written by a different author, who has memories, passions, or experiences with a particular neighborhood. As I was walking in one neighborhood, I was trying to find the old pickle shop; in an other neighborhood I was looking for the cabaret theatre/restaurant. I did all the things written in the walk chapter I was reading. I ate the desert in that French cafe and I bought some cheese from the shop mentioned in the chapter. This book is, I think, for people who love history, life, art, people and food. I recommend reading the particular walk chapter in advance, and then reading the same chapter piece by piece as you do the walk.
Next time I will do the next four walks that I already chose.

Thanks to John Roger for compiling such an amazing direction. I cannot wait to read the large version of this baby.
