Book Description
Red Deer: Behavior and Ecology of Two Sexes is the most extensive study yet available of reproduction in wild vertebrate. The authors synthesize data collected over ten years on a population of individually recognizable red deer, usually regarded as conspecific with the American elk. Their results reveal the extent of sex differences in behavior, reproduction, and ecology and make a substantial contribution to our understanding of sexual selection.

Starts slow but ends better than my expectations........2005-11-03
The beginning of the story started off very badly. For one Joan, had to explain everything to the reader instead of incorporating it in the story and letting it unfold naturally. She took several breaks from the story to explain the surroundings or the beliefs of the people, which we heard over and over again like a broken record. Second, when Alin and the girls were kidnapped, their kidnappers were very kind about it and personally as nice as the kidnappers were and as much as Joan described Alin to be a very well developed hunter I would have expected a little more than a fight from Alin and the girls. Plus, to ensure realism to the reader we want real characters and no matter what the reason for the kidnapping, the kidnappers are not going to be nice enough and explain their reasoning before conducting their extraction. It just didn't feel real and also, their was no language barrier...for as far away as the Horse men were from the People of the Red Deer their language barrier was non-existent, which is not at all realistic and a little too convienant. One of the characters also gets injured about mid-story and I was displeased to know that he didn't die...it talked about how his insides were hanging out of his body and he recovered...and well I don't particular care for death but the fact still remains that death is an unavoidable occurance and for Joan to spare it's readers of all unfortunes is a little disapointing because even though it is fiction it should still sound real, at least once upon a time. Even the characters that were supposed to be evil weren't as evil as I know some humans can be...and for a large tribe such as that to not have real enemies within is also a little unbelievable. Generally, the story line was very nice though and the romance was good and Joan actually allowed the reader to experience some suspense before giving Alin to Mar. But even the trials that Mar faced were not that difficult...he seemed to kill the horse with ease and survive the raging, cold river with ease...Where is the real conflict? Towards the end it did seem to unfold itself a little better than the beginning and overall it was a decent story...not a Jean Auel or Sue Harrison novel but it does have potential. I understand this was Joan Wolf's first pre-history fictional novel and the research, as far as I know, was good. I give it 3 stars and recommend this book to those that are running out of good pre-historical fiction books and would like something to pass the time.
A pre-historic love story.......2002-02-02
I read this book at first with a bit of apprehension, would it turn into a "men are evil and women are sinless" kind of a story?
I am happy to say it did not. It is a fresh story of love and partnership set in ancient France 14,000 years ago. Alin and Mar learn to see eye to eye in their two seperate views of life. A good yarn followed by the just as good "The Horsemasters", which is set several years later.(the young girl Fali is now the Old One)
Prehistoric Romance.......2001-07-09
An enchanting tale about life in prehistoric France. How tribes interacted and customs change. A love story with a great ending. I enjoyed this book more than Jean Auel's books. Quicker paced, harder to put down.
The greatest book for historical fiction lovers........2000-04-14
I read this book in my late teens and found it to be completly spell-binding. My first book that actully held me with pleasure for reading! Note; i do not believe that this book is sutiable for people under 16 years of age. But for us adults, it is wonderfull!

Book Description
One of the world's great dinosaur burial grounds is found in the badlands of the Red Deer River valley in southern Alberta. The skeletons of these fascinating beasts have travelled far from this remote spot to take up residence in reknowned collections: American Museum of Natural History, New York; Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago; Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa are among these. Housed on the banks of the Red Deer River at Drumheller, the Royal Tyrrell Museum joined these august ranks in 1985. Here, the valley's dinosaurs are on exhibition near where they lived and died to acquaint visitors with the roles they played in the story of evolution.
Dinosaur Country describes the geological events that created the lush coastal plains of the Late Cretaceous and details the fascinating array of dinosaurs that populated them 75 million years ago. Meltwaters at the end of the Ice Age carved out the badlands to expose the fossils. Excavations began in the early 1900s with the Great Canadian Dinosaur Rush. Teams fielded by the American Museum of Natural History and the Geological Survey of Canada were the main players in the race to unearth the biggest and best specimens. Today, scientists at the Royal Tyrrell Museum carry on where the early bone hunters left off.
Dinosaur Country outlines current debates -- about how these giant beasts lived, about the mass extinction that brought the Age of Dinosaurs to a close, and about the growing belief that the dinosaurs escaped extinction by evolving into birds.

An exciting survey of how these great beasts once lived.......2003-10-13
Now in an updated and expanded second edition Dinosaur Country: Unearthing The Alberta Badlands by ReinieGross tells the fascinating geological and paleontological story of the badlands of the Red Deer River valley in southern Alberta, the resting place for bones of great dinosaurs who populated the land 75 million years ago. An exciting survey of how these great beasts once lived and died in the mass extinction that ended the Age of Dinosaurs, as well as the growing belief that a few dinosaurs survived by evolving into birds, enhanced with black-and-white photographs and sketches. Dinosaur Country is enthusiastically recommended reading and a welcome contribution to academic Paleontology reference collections and reading lists.
History and paleontology of Alberta badlands.......1999-05-19
Excellent discussion in counterpoint of the natural history, human history and prehistory/paleontology of the Alberta badlands. Strongly recommended for those who are interested in the history of paleontology as a discipline as it was advanced by amateurs and professionals alike in a specific geographic region. Also entertaining for the general reader planning a visit to the area.

THE WILD RED DEER OF SCOTLAND Notes from an Island Forest on Deer, Deer Stalking, and Deer Forests in the Scottish Highlands. By Allan Gordon Cameron. Originally published in the early 1920's this scarce deer stalking title is now very hard to locate in its first edition. READ COUNTRY BOOKS have now republished it using the original text, maps and illustrations. The author was an experienced stalker and naturalist who wrote many articles for the sporting journals of that era. The life of a Scottish hill stag is a phenomenon without parallel in the natural history of the species and this book will prove of great interest to all with an interest in field sports and nature. Two hundred and sixty five pages contain fifteen detailed chapters including : Deer Stalking Old and New. - The Hill Stag and the Hill Stalk. - A Naturalist in the Deer Forest. - Calving, Birth Rate etc. - Habits. - Duration of Life. - Stalking Methods. - Antlers (four chapters) - Deer Forest Reforms. - The Ideal Forest. - Deer Distribution etc. This is a fascinating read for any stalking enthusiast or historian of the species, and contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive. READ COUNTRY BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

R.H. Review.......2006-11-10
Excellent book, written in the 1920's. Main focus is biology, but 20 to 30% relates to hunting, which is my primary interest. Having only hunted red deer on three estates, the author's observations seem very accurate, based on my limited experience. It would seem to be time for someone to write an updated version, adding the knowledge gained more recently.
Book Description
USA Today has called Robert Westbrook's work "exciting, funny, and entertaining." In the third book in this engaging series, New Mexico private eyes Howard Moon Deer and Jack Wilder must follow a sinister trail of clues that leads them into the past--to the night when a precious painting was stolen and a murderous legacy was born....
"Fans of Hillerman will love this unique and quirky detective duo."--Leslie Glass
"Westbrook writes with authority and amusement."--Los Angeles Times
Customer Reviews:
An excellent series with two interesting sleuths.......2003-04-14
I suppose it is time for a sub-genre of blind detectives to be developed. Howard is the employee of a blind retired police officer, Jack Wilder, who couldn't stand being retired. He provides the thought and Howard does the legwork to research the cases, often with unforeseen consequences. Howard is a Native American who received an education off the reservation. Now he is sophisticated, knowledgeable, and doesn't always fit in with his fellow tribesmen. In addition, he is living in New Mexico, and is equally as much an alien as Jack when it comes to the reservation and its residents.
Jack, though a resident of permanent darkness, is a gourmet cook and is even experimenting with learning to shoot without sight for aiming. Every so often he must extricate Howard from a bad situation. Howard gets knocked unconscious on a regular basis, and should be suffering far more damage from those blows...or at least reconsidering his career move.
Red Moon.......2002-10-26
I was greatly disappointed with this book. The main character is not a Ella Clah (Aimee and Davis Thurlo), Charlie Moon (James D. Doss), nor a Jim Chee or Joe Leaphorn (Tony Hillerman) but instead the book is about a blind ex-cop from California and his college-educated indian assistant from Minnasota working in New Mexico. It reads more like a typical 1940's detective novel. Your money would be better spend on a Thurlo, Doss, or Hillerman book. I had the same feelings when I read Westbrook's companion book "Ancient Enemy".
Ancient Enemy.......2002-10-26

A Fun and Interesting Read.......2001-08-21
Recently, I was searching for something new to read when a friend handed me Red Moon. I had never read anything of Robert Westbrook's before, but anxious for something different, I opened the book, and found his style absolutely captivating. He is a marvelous writer, but what I really liked was his ability to create a small town and make it come alive for me. I've never been a big fan of 'small town' settings, but his was unique, a bit quirky, and delivered with sharp wit.
The other aspect of the book that I liked was the plot. Lately, the mysteries I've been reading have been based on contrivance laid upon contrivance with the endings all too predictable. In Red Moon, the plot wasn't built on a framework of coincidences, but rather, was intelligently formulated with a very interesting ending.
My wife typically doesn't enjoy mysteries by 'guy writers,' but one night she was desperate for something to read, started Westbrook's book and ended up staying awake all night finishing it.
We'll now be looking for the other two books in this series!
Red Moon is Full.......2001-07-17
Robert Westbrook is the kind of writer you wish you could take on your next road trip: an insightful and witty storyteller with both a compassionate heart and a sharp eye for pretense and absurdity. Certainly he is the perfect guide through the Taos-y town in northern New Mexico which is the setting for his Howard Moon Deer series, where rich and poor, old and new, liberal and conservative, clash with the sudden violence of the weather systems the area is so famous for. In this latest book the art world is the scene of the crime, and like the previous two in the series, Red Moon is successful as a novel with plenty of satire, interpersonal drama, and vivid characters to care about, that just happens to have a mystery driving its narrative engine. It's a sophisticated read, more jazz than the honky-tonk or blues expected from the genre, with a satisfyingly twisty plot, silky writing, and note-perfect dialogue; but in the end, it's the characters you will remember. Westbrook is refreshingly respectful of the women he creates; and does a nice job making even the secondary characters unique and memorable (my favorite character, Howie's great-uncle Two Arrows, appears in just a few paragraphs of each book, but will blind-side you with his sweet wisdom; and The Rainbow Man, the homeless visitor who becomes the first murder victim, is an intriguing mix: dangerous and deranged, yet part visionary angel as well.) Jack is realistic and sympathetic as an ex-detective struggling with the limitations of his blindness, but as usual it is Howie who steals the show. In fact, the most puzzling mystery in the series is how any sane woman would let a guy like Howie out of her sleeping bag for an instant, let alone the rest of her life, as poor Howie's love interests always seem to do. So while I'm looking forward to the fourth book, due out soon, because I'm sure it will be another great read, I'm really going to be buying it to see if Howie can finally find a woman who will stick around!

Customer Reviews:
New edition is great!.......2007-09-28
This new edition of LP's Tahiti and French Polynesia guide was invaluable on my recent trip. The details of the out of the way islands like Maupiti are wonderful, the writing is funny but clear and informative. It had details of local places and special spots that were not in the old one. I read up on the writers and one of them is an American woman who lives there, I could really tell that she understood the perspective of a tourist. I carried this book in my purse for the two and a half weeks I just spent there and referred to it often. Especially for the directions, cultural details and local customs that I needed. I felt like I had a local friend as my guide. I also find it comforting that they take no freebies from the hotels.
We stayed in small pensions and loved it, no one has screens in Tahiti it seems, but the guide did mention electric mosquito devices which was helpful, it also gave food details on the half-board places, and on the whole seemed accurate and well researched. The enthusiasm of the writing is infectious and I totally fell in love with Tahiti and the other islands we visited, I felt like I really got to know it better than I would have alone because of this book.
Good, but needed more.......2004-05-23
I've used many Lonely Planet (LP) guides and found this one to be lacking their usual detail. I got the sense much hotel information was pilfered from Web surfing the basic info, rather than first-person investigation. While still a good book to take, next time (and there will be a next time because Tahiti is wonderful) I'll be sure take another guide along with it, and to thoroughly read actual travelers' online reviews. I'll also know the questions I need to ask before booking. My sense was that the reviewers weren't seeing things through the fresh-eyes of a first time traveler. The details, such as directions accommodation features were often lacking.
One thing I've always liked about LP is that they will list small locally owned budget places - that are occasionally hidden gems - whereas many other guides only list "approved" chain-type accommodations. However, in this book key information about lodging was missing. For example, it's very uncommon to find window screens in Polynesia despite a lot of mosquitoes, yet it is not standard for the book to say if there are screens or mosquito netting at each location (sometimes there are neither). Screens would be a big selling point for me. In Lonely Planet's India guide - which I was quite happy with - they deliberately note whether hotels have air-conditioning or not; in this guide this rather important information (for the tropics) is randomly added. Sometimes we'd get there and they'd have AC and sometimes they wouldn't. A more specific example is a pension primarily described as "friendly" - which it was in spades - with no mention that there's one bathroom shared with 8 people and that doesn't have hot water. With what prices are in Tahiti, poor information is very costly. One "resort" (our over-water bungalow splurge) was merely described as "competitive with other luxury resorts." Come to find out it had bedbugs and no air-conditioning.
If level of detail can be evidenced by pages numbers, note that LP's Hawaii guide (five main islands) is 615 pages, while their Tahiti guide (50+ islands/atolls, with ten commonly traveled) is a only 287 pages.
Outdated!!!.......2003-02-13
I was expecting more from lonely planet but aside from the maps, the book is obsolete. It also reads like a text book, no passion, no flavor, very boring. The sections on each area are not very big at all. ...
Excellant Guide book.......2002-06-02
This book did a wonderful job of not only preparing us for the journey, but help us get around. We have now been there three times to three difference islands, and each time it preformed well. Although with all travel books they get out to date in a year or two, you should always call a head to verify critical information.
Good Field Guide.......2000-09-28
This book is very comprehensive. It will help you find all of the places you want to go, and will give you an overview of what to expect. Some of the items could have been a little more detailed though. Directions were OK. Luckily the islands are easy to get around. We found the combination of this book, Jan Prince's book, and the Moon book to be the perfect combination for our trip in November of 1998. Read more about our trip and how we used these books at DiveAtlas.com.
This review replaces the out of date one that already exists.

OK book for snorkeling advice.......2002-07-25
This book is ok for snorkeling advice. Mostly geared to diving. A lot of the descriptions of the locations for snorkeling where not accurate. I would recommend since you really do not have a choice.
Required reading.......2002-02-16
An excellent guide with supurb photos, invaluable to anyone planning to dive these islands. The layout is intelligent and very easy to follow, and the practical advice is well up to the standards I expect of LP.
Buy it well before you go to plan out that dream vacation
Useful Book!.......2001-03-12
This met my expectations quite well. A good overview of the area, followed by a review of the key dive spots in French Polynesia. Excellent phtography, including a good critter guide at the end.
The only downside I can find is that there's no real overview of good snorkeling sites . . . they're lumped in with diving sites.
Overall, I'd recommend . . . I know it will be useful for my trip!
