      Book Description

The microcomputer revolution and the imperative to improve fishery management have accelerated the pace of technological innovation and the application of new technologies to practical fishery management problems. This volume was developed from a symposium held in February 2000, at which scientists working in all oceans of the planet presented research results from diverse marine species and habitats. The proceedings contain the results of research intended to define critical habitat, to monitor behaviour and physiology, and to synthesize tracking results into population models. This is the first synthesis of tagging and tracking methods used on marine fish and documents the state of the art of modern electronic tagging and tracking techniques. It will be the standard reference in this field for years to come and will be consulted by researchers planning to use these techniques in the future. Seasoned researchers as well as beginning graduate students will find this volume indispensable.

          Book Description

The Basics series provide the ideal introduction to new techniques in the laboratory. This series of books will allow you to use the techniques described, and to manipulate them to suit your own basic requirements.

This book describes the basic requirements for establishing and maintaining cell cultures both in the laboratory and in large-scale operations. Minimal background knowledge of the subject is assumed and therefore it will be a readable introduction to animal cell culture for scientists intending to initiate some work in this field.

New topics are included to reflect the latest developments and trends in the field. They cover the latest theory of the biological clock (teleomeres) of cell lines, the development of improved serum-free media formulations, the increased understanding of the importance and control of protein glycosylation and the humanization of antibodies for therapeutic use.

              Book Description

Lameness is one of the most costly diseases affecting cattle and cases are increasing as dairy cows spend more time confined to concrete instead of grassy pasture. The economic impact of lameness is significant. Preventive hoof care is increasingly practiced in modern dairy farming and is now recognised as a necessary investment in herd health.Manual for Treatment and Control of Lameness in Cattleincludes up to date information on common lameness conditions of cattle and emphasizes the practical aspect of functional and corrective trimming. Additionally it covers the anatomy and pathology of the bovine foot with illustrations of anatomical features as well as detailed photographs of lesions.

                Book Description

Like speech, the species-specific vocalizations or calls of non-human primates mediate social interactions, convey important emotional information, and in some cases refer to objects and events in the caller's environment. These functional similarities suggest that the selective pressures which shaped primate vocal communication are similar to those that influenced the evolution of human speech. As such, investigating the perception and production of vocalizations in extant non-human primates provides one avenue for understanding the neural mechanisms of speech and for illuminating the substrates underlying the evolution of human language. Primate Audition: Ethology and Neurobiology is the first book to bridge the epistemological gap between primate ethologists and auditory neurobiologists. It brings together the knowledge of world experts on different aspects of primate auditory function. Leading ethologists, comparative psychologists, and neuroscientists who have developed new experimental approaches apply their methods to a variety of issues dealing with primate vocal behavior and the neurobiology of the primate auditory system. With the advent of new signal processing techniques and the exponential growth in our knowledge of primate behavior, the time has arrived for a neurobiological investigation of the primate auditory system based on principles derived from ethology. The synthesis of ethological and neurobiological approaches to primate vocal behavior presented in Primate Audition: Ethology and Neurobiology is likely to yield the richest understanding of the acoustic and neural bases of primate audition and possibly shed light on the evolutionary precursors to speech.

3 out of 5 stars fun drawings, but the thoughts are often inane.......2005-09-11

I liked the drawings of everyday things in this book, and some of the travelogues were vivid and entertaining. The trip through Hell's Canyon, in particular, was authentically hellish and laborious and beautiful.

For someone who has arranged life for maximum time to think, however, the author stays at a pretty shallow level of thought. He draws animals and birds he sees, but doesn't seem to know much about them. The idealization of Native Americans and "primitive man" is irritating. The stories about parenting teenagers were okay as far as they went, but felt incomplete. Why does a teenager have to be home by six at night? What are their own aspirations and social lives like? There's not much of an eye for the right detail, the telling detail.

I happen to love doing nothing, leading a simple life, and observing the little things, but this book isn't a great advertisement for it. It sometimes crosses the line between simplicity and simplistic.

4 out of 5 stars Regain Your Sense of Childlike Wonder.......2005-04-23

I purchased both of the Dan Price books currently available, this one and the one called "How to Make a Journal of Your Life." I enjoyed both books very much and recommend them. They convey a childlike wonder in both the narrative and the drawings (some of which are quite good). There is a definite appeal to busy, responsibility-laden adults, who fantasize about chucking it all and taking-off for an adventurous life on the road. After reading these books, many will at least question whether they might simplify their lives in some way.

The neo-hippie, let's-go-out-and-play lifestyle is not without its cost, however. According to his website, the author has now split-up with his wife, who played such a large part in his first two books. And if his grown children have learned their lesson of independence . . . well, Dan may have plenty of solitude to enjoy in the future.

I hope that he is satisfied with what he calls in his Chronicles Creed an "endless" search for truth and beauty. The search can be quite enjoyable in itself. But if he actually wants to find ultimate truth and beauty, he may be frustrated. Since his method relies upon subjective experiences of nature and life, truth and beauty can be no bigger than his perceptions of them. Vestiges of truth and beauty in the natural world are a pleasing but ultimately unsatisfying taste of what we intuitively know is much bigger, much greater. It's like trying to be satisfied with the footprint of one's lover, rather than the actual person.

You might think from this that I don't like the book after all, but you'd be wrong. I like it even though it's not perfect. In fact, I plan to buy Dan Price's new book "Radical Simplicity" when it is published.

                      5 out of 5 stars living life.......2005-02-22

I started reading moonlight chronicles about seven years ago. Dan's style of drawing and his attention to detail in life and art are addictive and inspiring. I am so glad to see his books available on the open market. Reading his work makes you feel alive and makes you want to get back to the basics of living again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, life altering, a modern Jack Kerouac.......2004-01-02

The Moonlight Chronicles is an amazing discovery about what is really important in life.

Dan Price will put your life into focus. Things that bother you... lose importance. Great joy is really available and all we need to do is open our eyes. Dan's life is so obviously the real way to live... it will change your perspective on things. Dan is cross between a Zen Master sent to fix the planet... and a more modern Jack Kerouac.

This volume is primarily excerpts from Dan's larger collection of work available only in Zine format. I recommend this book highly... but I really recommend that you get the Zines too. There are more than 3000 pages in print.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2002-11-20

Even if you don't journal and have no intention of doing so, buy this little book and Dan's other one (How To Make A Journal of Your Life). Carry them around with you and read them over and over, and sink into the words and drawings. Then pay attention to your own life, each moment, whether you choose to document any of it or not.
