Facing years of abuse at the hands of those she trusted, she had a choice. When she was forced to live apart from the only source of love that she has ever known, she had a choice. Now Ivy stands alone at the crossroads of life staring into the eyes of the man that holds her final choice of life or death in his hands.

Horrible.......2007-06-22
this book was awful, I hated that I purchased this book, very disappointed. first of all I expected a better ending, second of all half of the time I didn't know what the character ivy/eve was talking about I was completely confused.. Of course I don't want to tell the book because it will ruin it for whoever dear to purchase this book.. the reason why I read it is because I already paid for it so I may as well read it.. to the author travis fox for future references if you are going to write a book like this please have a better ending or moral to the story.. thumbs down to this book, this is my first book I have read by this author I am almost scared to purchase anything else this author wrote.
Finally a change is pace.......2007-04-30
Poison Ivy is a story about a young girl Ivy Davidson who went through more struggles and abuse than most people would believe. At the young age of ten not only was Ivy burdened to keep a painful secret but she also witnessed her father brutally killed in front her. With only her mom around Ivy clung to her, yearning for her love but her mom had her own demons to deal with. Not only was she left a widow but also now she must become the breadwinner of the house. Tragedy strikes again and Ivy is left alone in the world. Forced into prostitution by a man who becomes a permanent figure in her life. Ivy only has one person she can turn to Black Pearl.
Travis Fox gives writing is a breath of fresh air. This novel is not your normal urban fiction. Its packed with gritty and uncensored scenes that for some will be a hard to swallow but for others this will be a book you will not be able to put down. Ivy's life was a filled with many tragedies but it tales you every ending aint a happily ever after!
A Hard Way to Exist.......2007-04-23
Ivy Davidson lives with her parents in the Huntington Park of Philadelphia. To onlookers, it may appear that they have a very good life. However, that's the furthest thing from the truth.
Drowning in a sorrowful sea, Ivy was terrorized as early as age five. Frightened of losing God's love, Ivy's sick father used that in order to trick his baby girl out of her innocence.
Unable to feel love and happiness like others, Ivy's only comfort came via heroine. All Ivy ever wanted was love, to live, go to prom and graduate. Instead she was misled, misguided, assaulted, raped and hated.
Continuously defiled, poor little Ivy never really grew up and suffers with trying to pave a way out of nothing. Will there ever be a change in Ivy's circumstance, or is she destined to be a forsaken soul?
Poison Ivy is a very difficult book to read as it deals with molestation. Though I felt like Travis Vp Fox started the book with promise, he completely lost me. Although I was able to complete the book, I am left wondering if Ivy was a schizophrenic, who began to hallucinate, or if she had alter personalities. It's unclear about what was and wasn't real and how much time had honestly passed. While I didn't find Poison Ivy insufferable, I do see room for improvements.

Reader Discretion Advised.......2007-04-23
In this dark, sadistic and disturbing novel, Travis Fox recounts the story of Ivy Davidson. Ivy is forced into prostitution at the tender age of ten. Plunged deeply into the dark, seedy underworld of prostitution where anything goes and nothing matters, Ivy finds herself looking for love, self-worth, acceptance and a purpose in life. Some days she doesn't know if she is coming or going. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for Ivy?
This is not a bad book and Fox can certainly tell a story, but I can't say this is a book I'd easily recommend to others. The subject matter is sensitive, the details graphic and the language aggressive. Poison Ivy is definitely for a mature audience and those not easily offended or disgusted. Harrowing depiction. The end effect, though, is a book you may find hard to read, but even harder to forget.
OKAY READ.......2007-03-23
This book started out as a good read until she started halluciating about a love and her dead parents. By then I just wanted to hurry up and finish and move on.

"How East New York Became a Ghetto describes the shift of East New York from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to a largely black and Puerto Rican one, and shows how a series of racially biased policies caused the deterioration of this once-flourishing area."
Arab-American Affairs"An interesting and worthwhile read, especially for its descriptions."Supplement
"Walter Thabit's book works as a slice of urban sociology, history, and political science. It should whet the appetites of students and scholars to inquire into the longue duree of the subject more extensively."

ÂThe book powerfully coveys the forces behind the ghettoization of one urban community and illustrates the difficulties of community development.Â

Introduction.
"Thabit is in a unique position to document the destruction of the once working class Brooklyn neighborhood. . . Toward the book's conclusion, Thabit sounds a faint note of hope to the emerging community groups."
New York
"This thoughtful, important analysis is recommended for academics, professionals, and a concerned public library audience."
Library Journal
"Walter Thabit eloquently tells the story of East New York, a neighborhood in eastern Brooklyn, complementing his close observation of events in the neighborhood with astute analyses of the bearing of larger forces on this big city slum. Events in East New York reveal in microcosm the turbulent national forces that have determined the fate of inner city ghettos across the country over the past 40 years."
from the Foreword by Frances Fox Piven
"The grim descriptions of civil neglect, community disorganization and institutional racism make this a difficult read, particularly when one realizes that this is the story that can be told about thousands of other neighborhoods in scores of citiies by hundreds of people. Perhaps if more planners like Thabit had told their stories, we might not have found oruselves in this predicament."
ADPSR NYIn response to the riots of the mid-'60s, Walter Thabit was hired to work with the community of East New York to develop a plan for low- and moderate-income public housing. In the years that followed, he experienced first-hand the forces that had engineered East New York's dramatic decline and that continued to work against its successful revitalization.
How East New York Became a Ghetto describes the shift of East New York from a working-class immigrant neighborhood to a largely black and Puerto Rican neighborhood and shows how the resulting racially biased policies caused the deterioration of this once flourishing area.
A clear-sighted, unflinching look at one ghetto community,
How East New York Became a Ghetto provides insights and observations on the histories and fates of ghettos throughout the United States.

Racist Garbage Against Whites.......2007-09-20
This book is terrible. Stop saying white people are racist. East New York like Trenton was nice in the 1950's and 60's. It's not our fault. Black People should be responsible for their own actions.
Useful, but..........2006-07-15
How ENY Became A Ghetto is about the last 40 years in ENY. It's mainly about housing, inequality, and race. I review the pros and cons.
PROS:
- the book exists: there is something to read on ENY.
- it provides a lot of facts and good stories about ENY.
- some chapters are indeed really good (the chapters about the history of ENY, the chapter on recent politics).
- Thabit tells in details about the scams in real estate.
CONS:
- it is ultra-liberal. I mean, I am myself liberal, but the author is a serious extremist. The book is so biased that it's not even funny in the end.
- the chapters about the history of Thabit's work in ENY are useless and tedious.
CONCLUSION:
You'd rather buy the excellent "Brownsville, Brooklyn" by Wendell Pritchett. Brownsville is just west to East New York, about the same in terms of social processes, and Pritchett is a true scholar, whose work is amazing.
Disappointing & Revisionist.......2006-06-17
The author reveals his bias, apologistic views, ultra-political correctness, and lack of understanding of Economics 101 from the very get-go. And goes downhill from there. Yes I'm sure there has been corruption and mis-management by the "authorities" and community groups (past and present) alike, but that is tangential to the demise of ENY. I was there. If you have rent control, landlords cannot and will not invest or maintain. When housing stock deteriorates, only those who cannot afford better will remain or move in, thus giving rise to a heavy concentration of the poor and uneducated. In turn, this leads to frustration, crime, further flight of the true working class (the old East New York), and inevitable decline. Is it reversible? I hope so. But the author's schemes are nothing more than code for welfare. And that does not work. The author's views on education, law enforcement, et al, follow a similar path - PC at the expense of reality
A Must Read For Anyone Who Is Interested in Cities .......2005-02-16
In this very readable book Walter Thabit describes the decline and rebirth of East New York. It is both readable and methodical in desribing how real estate, politics (from the federal level to the community school board)and prejudice (economic and racial) destroyed a viable community. Special interests groups from community based organizations to the teachers unions to uniformed city workers worked against the best interests of the community.
The good news is that East New York is on the rise. The efforts of long time community residents and faith based organizations have made this a community for those on their way to achieving the American dream of if not home ownership, a decent place to live. How East New York Became a Ghetto is instructive in how community residents must organize themselves and align the best interests of their communities to prevent this kind of debacle from happening in their own backyard.

You're nuts. How about reading the book first and then reviewing it? Dope.
Book Description
The presentation of art, animals, and sex in Las Vegas, and how the creation of spectacle blurs the line between art and business. Las Vegas, says William Fox, is a pay-as-you-play paradise that succeeds through its collective ability to fantasize our deepest desires, which in a consumer society mean vast wealth and the excesses of pleasure and consumption that go with it. In this context, Fox examines how Las Vegas's culture of spectacle has obscured the boundaries between high art and entertainment extravaganza, nature and fantasy, for-profit and nonprofit enterprises.
His purview ranges from casino art galleries--including Steve Wynn's private collection and a branch of the famed Guggenheim Museum, --to the dismally underfunded Las Vegas Art Museum; from spectacular casino animal collections like those of magicians Siegfried and Roy and Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef exhibit to the city's desultory efforts to create a viable public zoo; from the environmental and psychological impact of lavish water displays in the arid desert to the artistic ambiguities intrinsic to Las Vegas's floating world of showgirls, lapdancers, and ballet divas.
That Las Vegas represents one of the world's most opulent displays of private material wealth in all its forms, while at the same time providing miserly funding for local public amenities like museums and zoos, is no accident, Fox maintains. Nor is it unintentional that the city's most important collections of art and exotic fauna are presented in the context of casino entertainment, part of the feast of sensation and excitement that seduces millions of visitors each year. Instead, this phenomenon shows how our insatiable modern appetite for extravagance and spectacle has diminished the power of unembellished nature and the arts to teach and inspire us, and demonstrates the way our society privileges private benefit over public good. Given that Las Vegas has been shown over and over to be the harbinger of national cultural trends, Fox's commentary may offer prescient insight into the future of the arts in America, as well as new understanding of the role that public institutions like museums and zoos play in our lives.

Book Description
In recent years, urban "redevelopment" has emerged as one of the key concerns of urban social science in both theoretical and empirically based research settings. This edited volume brings together some of the latest scholarly work on the novel and enduring features of urban redevelopment, while highlighting the dilemmas, conflicts, and contradictions regarding the links between space, capital, and power.
The readings deal with global and national level changes, symbolic and cultural meanings of urban redevelopment, the dynamics of race and class, the causes and consequences of gentrification, the redevelopment of public housing, and the transformation of cities into sites of fun, leisure, and entertainment.

Short on Keys Informatino.......2007-05-16
Compared to other LP's I've read, this one is really small for such a large area as Miami and the Keys. The options offered for sleeping in the Keys are really limited in scope so they were of no use to me. I did better on price than the few places they mentioned by going to the web (got better places for less money). The history section was the only part of the book I enjoyed.

Much more detailed, less photography, but worthwhile..........2005-07-08
This book is much more detailed, has less photography than the DK Eyewitness books on Miami & the Keys. But it is worthwhile.
Very Good Guide.......2005-01-24
As a Floridian who visits Miami several times a month, I have found this guide to be an invaluable resource while on my trips to the Magic City. This book, as is typical of Lonely Planet's guidebooks, is very practical and easy to use while keeping the reader interested with fascinating information about Miami's cultural aspects. The only flaws are a couple of minor errors regarding street names, but nothing that will likely present the average visitor with any problems. All in all, another great and well written guide from Lonely Planet. I cannot reccommend this book enough.

This covers it all.......2000-08-13
This provided me with plenty of groundwork to spend time in Miami . Historical background and explanations were excellent, as well as the maps, contact numbers, and accomadation. A lot of this bookd was taken the from the larger LP work on Florida was was excellent as well. The only thing to note is that some of the hotel prices in the-then more affordable category has risen, in some cases by a third. The hostels in Miami/Miami Beach cannot be beat.
By far the best guide to Miami's social life and history.......2000-03-13
Before arriving to Miami, I bought this guide. Once there, I tested it and it was 98% accurate. No matter what you are interested in, this guide has a suggestion for you. From dining and clubbing, to hints and tips, to small excursions outside the metro area. A must for everyone interested in visiting Miami.
