paddington at large.......2000-03-07
I am a 21-year-old college student, and I gave the book 3-stars due to it being hard for me to follow. On the other hand, Paddington's shinanigans were pretty funny.

A Bear Called Paddington
ASIN: 061831105X |
Book Description
Here's Paddington once more, just returned from a visit to Darkest Peru and his Aunt Lucy's birthday celebration at the Home for Retired Bears. Now that Paddington is home with the Browns, he's free to cause his usual kind of trouble: dabbling in the stock market, trying a career as a barber, even taking a turn at the ballet. But the promise of international fame doesn't turn this bear's head. Not for long, at least. Indeed, readers will agree, it's far better to be simply a bear called Paddington.

Paddington Bear Adventures.......2007-10-06
The story is 50 years old but still catches the rapt attention of the first grade class that I read to every week. The book has the classic illustrations which are colorful and descriptive. An excellent choice for young children with enough mischief yet a clear message of good intentions.

Customer Reviews:
Great High Level Overview of Bear Viewing in Alaska, But You Will Still Need to Research the Details to Plan a Trip. .......2007-09-30
This is a very well written book, but I had high expectations when I heard it was coming out. I envisioned a glossy but informative, "Frommer's" or "Eyewitness" type guide that had good maps and beautiful images for each viewing location, with very specific transportation, lodging, timing, tips, and suggestions.
This book seems to be a high level guide mixing the current Bear Viewing industry and a how to act in bear country guide. The facts are presented in a general manner. For example, rather than saying "Use guides A or B" or plan to travel the second or third weeks of July, they have a list of questions to ask of your guide and suggest mid-summer visits during salmon runs. This is understandable, specific information would go out of date quickly and bears' habits are variable. So, the more vague information has a longer shelf life and is weather-proof. The information in the book is valuable, but the book does not contain all the answers you'll need to plan a trip.
Location descriptions take up a third of the book, but they are short and again somewhat vague. Brooks River, which deserves pages, is given a paragraph of a hundred or so words. I was hoping for at least a map, description of camping availability, maybe a timing chart showing average peaks in bear presence and at least the iconic photo of a Brooks River bear catching the salmon mid-air. They spent 28 words describing the picture. I would have preferred a thousand words worth of photo.
Where the book soars is when it discusses bear etiquette and ethics. The author is knowlegeble and prudent in his advice. His descriptions of bear behavior and ideal viewer behavior is what should be taken away from this book. Techniques is a strong word to use in the title, they're more like guidelines, but I think this is the meat of this book.
Also, the book is filled with great photos, but again, I was hoping glossy national geographic type photos rather than black and white textbook images. I'm sure it was a cost saving compromise but they lost some of their power in the printing process.
Sounds like I am slamming the book. I really can't, it's a good book. I was just hoping for something different. I guess my advice is to expect a fantastic general overview of the subject. What is there is great, what is missing are the specific details you need to start your trip planning.
Great practical, smart ways to see bears.......2007-09-10
This book gives a great overview of the suprisingly many ways there are to see bears in Alaska. Stringham gives loads of specific, practical advice. He also backs it up with the science he's learned and contributed to over the years so that you understand what you're seeing. And, he gives tips on how to be safe while you're seeing bears.
An essential resourse for all bear enthusiasts.......2007-08-05
Dr. Stephen Stringham's BEAR VIEWING in ALASKA is an up-to-date reference guide for anyone interested in observing the magnificence and splendor of Alaska's wild bears. As a professional wildlife photographer I can say firsthand that Dr. Stringham's vast array of knowledge will surely enhance ones bear viewing adventure. The book is an indispensable manual for both the amateur viewer as well as the professional biologist, journalist or photographer. The exquisite images by Kent Fredriksson beautifully portray the bears in their natural habitat.

Customer Reviews:
Discovering Tuscany.......2007-10-12
This is a lovely "coffee table" book.
I found the information to be extremely general - book does not contain information that cannot be obtained in any take along travel guide such as Foders, Blue Guide, Cadogan, Rough Guide, etc. In addition, this book is NOT a good reference for individuals who travel on a budget. Most accommodations & ristorantes fall into the 4 star range; expensive.
This book is the perfect book for the pretentious American tourist.
Dreaming of Tuscany.......2007-06-07
As a frequent traveler to Tuscany, I find this book one of the best. It reflects the romantic and unique part of the world known as Tuscany. Wonderful coffee table book, resource for Tuscany and reading for rainy days.
Dreaming of Tuscany.......2007-01-15
Since my daughter and I are going to be in Tuscany in the spring, I found the book to be a great resource for the area. I'm looking forward to seeing things firsthand...but so glad that Ms. Ohrbach has done the groundwork for us...a much more efficient use of our limited time there!
Book Description
Travelers looking for the "true essence" of Italy need look no further than the Authentic Italy series from the Touring Club of Italy. This guidebook offers a uniquely Italian perspective on the region of Tuscany that only TCI, with more than 100 years of experience providing reliable information to travelers, can provide. With detailed maps, Authentic Tuscany includes everything readers need to discover the delights of Tuscany at their own pace. The subject-keyed design allows readers to quickly scan daily activities and focus in on their particular location. Illustrated throughout with graphics, maps, and photos from the extensive TCI archives, this book rates restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, villa rentals, spas, and retreats; explores food/regional specialties, with profiles on each category; suggests one-, two-, and three-day itineraries, emphasizing walking tours, special interest tours (wineries, olive oil, ceramics), and biking routes; outlines an array of shopping options, covering local artisans and handicrafts, markets (antiques, flea markets, craft fairs), outlets, and factory tours; and includes a calendar listing musical, cultural, and food festivals and events.
Customer Reviews:
Bring back the Heritage Guides.......2007-05-19
This new format is fine for browsing as part your trip planning. But it lacks the detail on art and culture that the old TCI Heritage Guides have; especially missed are the suggested walking tours. The new format does have more info on food, wine, shopping, etc than the old Heritage Guides, but it is not worth the tradeoff (at least for me.) As a result, Authentic Tuscany will stay on the shelf, while Heritage Guide to Umbria gets to come with.
Covers all the angles and chock full of leads.......2007-02-20
I bought this book with the hopes of getting some more detailed information about the Tuscany region to better plan a week's stay there. The book is nicely organized with sections devoted to food and history, and the lesser discussed areas of folklore, special events, arts & crafts, shopping and even some info. about activities for children, which is almost impossible to find in other books. This was the first book I found a detailed description of the Salvatore Ferragamo museum (amazing shoes) in Florence. There are tons of websites listed for everything, which will fuel your search into greater depth. There are several maps and expoded views of famous buildings and some nice quality photos of the towns. This is a nicely organized book. There is also info. in the front about joining the touring club of Italy (the sponsor of the book). For 25 Euros you get a one year membership and discounts at a variety of hotels, eateries, and other places which are highlighted throughout the book. Seems like a good deal. I would recommend this book, and I'm interested to see other books put out by this organization.
Great guide written by Italians!.......2007-02-20
This guide is written by the Italian Touring Club. That alone should tell you that they know what they're talking about. As an Italian, I love this guide, it's true to reality, essential, useful. Your search has ended! No need to wonder anymore "Do these people know what they're talking about?", because they do. You can take that from a native Tuscan! :-)
Good Tuscany Guide for General Use.......2006-04-03
TCI guides are usually superb for serious and independent travelers. Authentic Tuscany is a bit more mainstream than others in the TCI series, which is understandable given the region's popularity. There are more illustrations and photos, all of which are excellent, as well as sections devoted to food and shopping. The book does provide solid historical information, plus hotel and restaurant recommendations, that will satisfy most tourists. However, if you're driving from town to town (which is the best way to get to know Italy), you'll really miss the detailed itineraries and maps that other TCI guides contain. At the very least, you'll need to pick up a separate map, which isn't always necessary with other TCI books (e.g. the excellent Umbria guide). You may also miss the more in-depth descriptions of towns that TCI is known for. Authentic Tuscany is closer to a 5-star book when compared to other Tuscany guides; it only falls short when judged by TCI's high standards.
Wow!.......2005-06-10
This may be the best travel guidebook I have ever seen. I've been a fan of the so-called "TCI" books for years; they are very popular among those whose hobby is exploring Italy, because of the tremendous insider's detail and information on the interesting small towns, all written from an Italian tourist's point-of-view.
But, this new format is fantastic. The book is divided into color-coded sections. The red "Heritage" section is similar to a classic Michelin Green Guide description of the major cities in Tuscany - the illustrations and maps are outstanding (less spectacular and slick perhaps than the "Eyewitness Guides" but more to my tastes).
What really sets the guide apart are the other sections however. The "itineraries" section includes detailed descriptions on some really intriguing "industrial museums" including such things as the Salvatore Ferragamo shoe museum in Florence and the Piaggio motor scooter museum in Pisa, tourist attractions that were previously unknown to me.
I would give the book 5 stars for the 40-page food section alone, if that were its only contents. Not only do they list and describe all the different cheeses and sausages of Tuscany, I particularly appreciate the fact that they indicate which towns are especially famous for what type of Pecorino (for example). Next time I'm in Grosseto, I'll know what cheese to look for.
This is incidentally, the first guide to Tuscany (or Italy) that I have seen that goes into any kind of detail on Grosseto as a tourist attraction.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading travel guides, even if you have no specific plans to visit Italy. I am really looking forward to additional TCI guides in this new "authentic" series.
Book Description
This new edition of the original Italian classic is the only English edition in print approved by the National Foundation of Carlo Collodi in Tuscany. It is translated from the original Italian text by the well-known American Poet M. L. Rosenthal and printed in Italy on patina paper. The illustrations in this edition are reproductions of paintings created for the centennial of Pinocchio in Tuscany by Roberto Ciabani, celebrated Florentine painter who was designated magnificent master of Florence, Italy for his artistic work. The book was created in Tuscany from the original text which follows the newly released Italian film of Pinocchio. Pinocchio is a story for adults as well, about how to resolve the conflict between contradictory passions: to be a free spirit pulled by unbridled pleasures and fantasies or to become the ideal of a responsible, caring human. Pinocchio is still the most widely published book in the world after the Bible.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2005-11-10
It is a great classic story. The art-pictures in this book are made by Roberto Ciabani who was designated "Magnificent Master" of Florence and he is a Tuscan. I really loved the pictures in this book and my son loved the story. It is for all ages!!!
TheAuthentic Story of PInocchio of Tuscany.......2002-12-28
My daugher loved this book. She used to tell me every night, "Let's read Pinocchio". It's a great book. We liked the art.

Customer Reviews:
If it's good enough for the De' Medicis.............2007-03-13
I received this book as a gift when the Frances Mayes Tuscany book (ugh!)was all rage. I flipped through it thinking "what a dumb format for a coobook" then slipped it into a bookshelf where it lay buried for a couple of years. I did however remember seeing in it (& liking the idea of) a recipe for "Elder Flower Flat Bread" (p.34) and I had an elderberry shrub in bloom so I dragged the book out, plucked the 1/2 cup of elderflowers and made the bread. It was good. I started actually looking at the photographs and then read through it. I kinda liked it. Then, to go on an antipasti (as Lorenza suggested) I made the "Stuffed Eggs with Tarragon" (p.35). Big hit! I tried, like an earlier reviewer, the "Chickpea Flat Bread"(p.45) Big-gloppy -mess- disaster! But, Lorenza had my attention with her great commentary on the culinary regions of Tuscany and the food styling is so irresistable and appetizing I forged on. Also VERY LOVING photographs of Tuscany. I've tried: "Naked Ravioli" (p78) Great! "Meatloaf of Arrezzo"(p.148 ) Nice suprise. "Fennel Cake" (p.242) Indispensible, I bake one a week! Light Apple Cake (p. 246) Delicious! So, long story short I really enjoy this book. The format is very large, rather absurd for the kitchen but I just slap it down on the counter, keep it open with a marble pestle and happily cook away.
Nice Gift Book.......2007-01-16
A large, attractive book that I gave as a gift. Nice pictures of the food and the recipes looked interesting and not too difficult.
Best In Many Ways.......2007-01-06
I received this book as a gift a few years ago and have used it often. The recipe's are imaginative, easy and always well recieved by family and guests. The recipe's ingredients are basic and credible. And of course, the presentation in this book is a knockout! The food, the scenery, the dishware. All top drawer.
Ah, Tuscany!.......2006-09-27
This is a book that lives up to its name in all respects. The color photos (250) are warmly, rustically lit. These carefully composed still lifes entice the earthier senses with taste and aroma and give the reader a yen for this beautiful region.
And the recipes, arranged by course, highlight regional dishes from the simple -- Chicken in Red Wine, Chestnut and Rice Soup to the unusual -- Salt Cod and Mint Soup, Spaghetti with Sea Urchin Sauce to the sublime -- Snails with Sausage and Tomato Sauce, Pheasant Broth, Ricotta Tart.
for the coffee table, not the kitchen.......2006-01-10
I got this as a gift from my son, since I had just visited Tuscany last year and loved the food. I am an experienced gourmet cook. This book needed a test kitchen in the worst way. I tried two recipes: one for polenta (as basic as pasta) and a Garbanzo bean bread. The proportions for both were totally wrong. The polenta balled up in the pan, and the "flat bread" was like a soft egg dish. I checked in one of my favorite chef cookbooks (Sheila Lukins of Silver Palate fame) and the proportions were very different for the polenta. the other recipe couldn't find anywhere. I'm donating this one to the library for the Friends of the Library sale.
